Deterioration investigation is an essential foundation for understanding the preservation status of stone cultural heritage, as well as for carrying out emergency and preventive conservation. Traditional photogrammetry method for deterioration investigation in stone cultural heritage heavily relies on personnel experience and has low automation. To accurately evaluate the degree of deterioration and quantify its scale, different algorithms are used to establish the rebound value prediction model and deterioration identification model based on the hyperspectral image. The effects of different wavelength selection methods and different classification models are compared. The results show that the rebound value inversion model constructed by CARS and PLS delivers the most accurate forecasts, with R2 being no less than 0.85. The maximum error of the model when applied in the field does not exceed 20%. Different types of deterioration can be initially identified by the normalized spectral index constructed from the 530 nm and 675 nm wavelengths. In addition, all four classification models based on hyperspectral imaging texture features can identify different types of deterioration. The LGBM model has the highest identification accuracy of 0.98. It also has good performance in field identification. The objective was to perform placental ultrasound image texture (UPIA) in first (T1), second(T2) and third(T3) trimesters of pregnancy using machine learning(ML). In this prospective observational study the 2D placental ultrasound (US) images from 11-14 weeks, 20-24 weeks, and 28-32 weeks were taken. The image data was divided into training, validating, and testing subsets in the ratio of 80%, 10%, and 10%. Three different ML techniques, deep learning, transfer learning, and vision transformer were used for UPIA. Out of 1008 cases included in the study, 59.5% (600/1008) had a normal outcome. The image texture classification was compared between T1&T2, T2 &T3 and T1&T3 pairs. Using Inception v3 model, to classify T1& T2 images, gave the accuracy, Cohen Kappa score of 83.3%, 0.662 respectively. The image classification between T1&T3 achieved best results using EfficientNetB0 model, having the accuracy, Cohen Kappa score, sensitivity and specificity of 87.5%, 0.749, 83.4%, and 88.9% respectively. Comparison of placental image texture among cases with materno-fetal adverse outcome and controls was done using Efficient Net B0. The F1 score, was found to be 0.824 , 0.820, and 0.892 in T1, T2 and T3 respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of the model was 77.4% at 80.2% at T1 but increased to 81.0% and 93.9% at T2 &T3 respectively. • DL reconstructions decrease image noise without modifying FBP image texture. • DL reconstructions improve spatial resolution and detectability as to FBP and IR. • DL reconstructions can further reduce dose with respect to IR. To assess whether a deep learning image reconstruction algorithm (TrueFidelity) can preserve the image texture of conventional filtered back projection (FBP) at reduced dose levels attained by ASIR-V in chest CT. Phantom images were acquired using a clinical chest protocol (7.6 mGy) and two levels of dose reduction (60% and 80%). Images were reconstructed with FBP, ASIR-V (50% and 100% blending) and TrueFidelity (low (DL-L), medium (DL-M) and high (DL-H) strength). Noise (SD), noise power spectrum (NPS) and task-based transfer function (TTF) were calculated. Noise texture was quantitatively compared by computing root-mean-square deviations (RMSD) of NPS with respect to FBP. Four experienced readers performed a contrast-detail evaluation. The dose reducing potential of TrueFidelity compared to ASIR-V was assessed by fitting SD and contrast-detail as a function of dose. DL-M and DL-H reduced noise and NPS area compared to FBP and 50% ASIR-V, at all dose levels. At 7.6 mGy, NPS of ASIR-V 50/100% was shifted towards lower frequencies (f peak = 0.22/0.13 mm−1, RMSD = 0.14/0.38), with respect to FBP (f peak = 0.30 mm−1). Marginal difference was observed for TrueFidelity: f peak = 0.33/0.30/0.30 mm−1 and RMSD = 0.03/0.04/0.07 for L/M/H strength. Values of TTF 50% were independent of DL strength and higher compared to FBP and ASIR-V, at all dose and contrast levels. Contrast-detail was highest for DL-H at all doses. Compared to 50% ASIR-V, DL-H had an estimated dose reducing potential of 50% on average, without impairing noise, texture and detectability. Pronounced spin phase artifacts appear in diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with only minor subject motion. While DWI data corruption is often identified as signal drop out in diffusion-weighted (DW) magnitude images, DW phase images may have higher sensitivity for detecting subtle subject motion. This article describes a novel method to return a metric of subject motion, computed using an image texture analysis of the DW phase image. This Phase Image Texture Analysis for Motion Detection in dMRI (PITA-MDD) method is computationally fast and reliably detects subject motion from diffusion-weighted images. A threshold of the motion metric was identified to remove motion-corrupted slices, and the effect of removing corrupted slices was assessed on the reconstructed FA maps and fiber tracts. Using a motion-metric threshold to remove the motion-corrupted slices results in superior fiber tracts and fractional anisotropy maps. When further compared to a state-of-the-art magnitude-based motion correction method, PITA-MDD was able to detect comparable corrupted slices in a more computationally efficient manner. In this study, we evaluated the use of DW phase images to detect motion corruption. The proposed method can be a robust and fast alternative for automatic motion detection in the brain with multiple applications to inform prospective motion correction or as real-time feedback for data quality control during scanning, as well as after data is already acquired. The Surface roughness and image texture features of milled surfaces are key parameters to study the surface characteristics of end milled AA 6061 alloy. A Machine vision system is employed to capture and store the images of the end milled workpieces. The stylus type instrument is used measure the surface roughness values of various milled workpieces for different cutting conditions such as speed, feed and depth of cut. The Grey Level Cooccurance Matrix [GLCM] is introduced to extract the image texture features of the end milled surfaces. Four Matrices about different sampling orientations are builtup to determine the various image texure features such as contrast, homogenity, correlation and energy. A regression analysis is performed between image texture features and surface roughness values of the machined surfaces. Proposing a fast detection algorithm for urban road traffic congestion based on image processing technology. Firstly, to speed up the processing and to freely select the interesting area, the human-computer interaction vehicle area detection was put forward. Then, by using the difference of texture features between congestion image and unobstructed image, proposing vehicle density estimation based on texture analysis. Through image grayscale relegation, gray level co-occurrence matrix calculation and feature extraction, the energy and entropy features that could reflect vehicle density were obtained from vehicle area. After features training, the decision threshold could be obtained and traffic congestion was carried out. Liver biopsy is considered to be the gold standard for analyzing chronic hepatitis and fibrosis; however, it is an invasive and expensive approach, which is also difficult to standardize. Medical imaging techniques such as ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging are non-invasive and helpful methods to interpret liver texture, and may be good alternatives to needle biopsy. Recently, instead of visual inspection of these images, computer-aided image analysis based approaches have become more popular. In this study, a non-invasive, low-cost and relatively accurate method was developed to determine liver fibrosis stage by analyzing some texture features of liver CT images. In this approach, some suitable regions of interests were selected on CT images and a comprehensive set of texture features were obtained from these regions using different methods, such as Gray Level Co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), Laws’ method, Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), and Gabor filters. Afterwards, sequential floating forward selection and exhaustive search methods were used in various combinations for the selection of most discriminating features. Finally, those selected texture features were classified using two methods, namely, Support Vector Machines (SVM) and k -nearest neighbors ( k -NN). The mean classification accuracy in pairwise group comparisons was approximately 95% for both classification methods using only 5 features. Also, performance of our approach in classifying liver fibrosis stage of subjects in the test set into 7 possible stages was investigated. In this case, both SVM and k -NN methods have returned relatively low classification accuracies. Our pairwise group classification results showed that DWT, Gabor, GLCM, and Laws’ texture features were more successful than the others; as such features extracted from these methods were used in the feature fusion process. Fusing features from these better performing families further improved the classification performance. In this study, the application of a backscattering imaging system with different approaches of transform-based image texture analysis for the evaluation of banana quality at different ripening stages was investigated with Wavelet, Gabor and Tamura transforms. The attenuated images of the fruits were acquired using Laser Light Backscattering Imaging (LLBI) with laser diodes emitting light at three wavelengths viz 532, 660, and 830 nm. The elasticity, chlorophyll index and soluble solids content (SSC) of each sample were measured as reference parameters by using a texture analyser, a Delta Absorbance (DA) meter, and a refractometer, respectively. The performance of the extracted features from the selected transform-based image texture analysis for analysing the quality parameters of the fruit was evaluated by means of an artificial neural network (ANN) and a support vector machine (SVM). The results indicated that there were significant changes of elasticity, chlorophyll index and SSC as the ripening stages increased. Prediction model analysis showed that the Wavelet transform exhibited the most reliable results for all of the reference parameters followed by Tamura and the Gabor transform. The results also revealed that analysis using an ANN approach recorded better performance than SVM as reflected by higher coefficient of determination (R 2 ) values. Thus, this study indicated that an LLBI system with transform-based image texture analysis coupled with computational intelligence techniques can be used for the evaluation of the quality of bananas. Global biodiversity loss is most pronounced in the tropics. Monitoring of broad-scale patterns of habitat is essential for biodiversity conservation. Image texture measures derived from satellite data are proxies for habitat heterogeneity, but have not been tested in tropical forests. Our goal was to evaluate image texture to predict tropical forest bird distributions across Thailand for different guilds. We calculated a suite of texture measures from cumulative productivity (1-km fPAR-MODIS data) for Thailand's forests, and assessed how well texture measures predicted distributions of 86 tropical forest bird species in relation to body size, and nesting guild. Finally, we compared the predictive performance of combining (a) satellite image texture measures, (b) habitat composition, and (c) habitat fragmentation. We found that texture measures predicted occurrences of tropical forest birds well (AUC = 0.801 ± 0.063). Second-order homogeneity was the most predictive texture measure. Our models based on texture were significantly better for birds with larger body size (p < 0.05), but did not differ among nesting guilds (p > 0.05). Models that combined texture with habitat composition measures (AUC = 0.928 ± 0.038) outperformed models that combined fragmentation with habitat composition measures (AUC = 0.905 ± 0.047) (p < 0.05). The incorporation of texture, composition, and fragmentation variables significantly improved model accuracy over texture-only models (AUC = 0.801 ± 0.063 to AUC = 0.938 ± 0.034; p < 0.05). Global food production in the developing world occurs within sub-hectare fields that are difficult to identify with moderate resolution satellite imagery. Knowledge about the distribution of these fields is critical in food security programs. We developed a semi-automated image segmentation approach using wall-to-wall sub-meter imagery with high-performance computing to map crop area (CA) throughout Tigray, Ethiopia that encompasses over 41,000 km 2 . Multiple processing streams were tested to minimize mapping error while applying five unique smoothing kernels to capture differences in land surface texture associated to CA. Typically, very-small fields (mean < 2 ha) have a smooth image roughness compared to natural scrub/shrub woody vegetation at the ~1 m scale and these features can be segmented in panchromatic imagery with multi-level histogram thresholding. Multi-temporal very-high resolution (VHR) panchromatic imagery with multi-spectral VHR are sufficient in extracting critical CA information needed in food security programs. A 2011 to 2015 CA map was produced, using over 3000 WorldView-1 panchromatic images wall-to-wall in 1/2° mosaics for Tigray, Ethiopia. CA was evaluated with nearly 3000 WorldView-2 2 m multispectral 250 × 250 m image subsets by seven expert interpretations, and with in-situ global positioning system photography. CA estimates ranged from 32 to 41% in sub regions of Tigray with median maximum per bin commission and omission errors of 11% and 1% respectively, with most of the error occurring in bins <15%. This empirical, simple, and low direct cost approach via U.S. government license agreement to access commercial VHR data, could be a viable big-data high-performance computing methodology to extract wall-to-wall CA for other regions of the world that have very-small agriculture fields with similar image texture. The analysis of surface textures plays an important role in the geomorphometric analysis of high-resolution digital terrain models. Surface textures can be analyzed by means of geostatistical variogram-based indices. The use of variogram-based indices is promising because of their ability to consider the multiscale and anisotropic character of morphometric data. However, similar to other variance-type statistics, variogram-based indices are sensitive to the presence of hotspots and non-stationary data. Consequently, we present a multi-scale and directional image texture analysis operator (MAD or Median Absolute Differences) derived from a modification of a variogram estimator. MAD has been specifically developed to improve the robustness of variogram-based surface indices with a special focus on strongly non-stationary and often noisy spatial data representing solid earth surface morphology. Although the operator has been specifically developed for the analysis of high-resolution digital terrain models, it can be applied to the texture analysis of any type of image. Consequently MAD could be of interest in the broader context of remote sensing as well as for all disciplines for which image texture analysis is relevant. The theoretical presentation of the surface texture operator is accompanied by a working software prototype. The software prototype has been implemented in the Python scripting language for use in ArcGIS (ESRI) using its Spatial Analyst functions. The prototype architecture is concise and can be easily coded in different software environments, such as GIS mapping and image analysis software. The software prototype proposed has been developed to facilitate the development of ad hoc surface texture indices capable of adapting to the special needs of the study at hand. Timely and accurate detection of crop water stress is vital for precision irrigation. Whether the accuracy of the prevailing diagnosis of crop water stress using vegetation indices (VIs) and spectral reflectance can be improved still remains to be investigated. The crop surface characteristics such as grayscale or color vary under different water stress, so in this study one more variable, image texture, was utilized together to diagnose water stress. For this end, the canopy image of winter wheat in bloom was obtained by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with multispectral sensor, and the effect of soil background was eliminated using vegetation index threshold method. On this basis, Grey level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) was used to calculate the mean (MEA), variance (VAR), homogeneity (HOM), contrast (CON), dissimilarity (DIS), entropy (ENT), second moment (SEC) and correlation (COR) of the image texture under different spatial resolutions (0.008 m, 0.01 m, 0.02 m, 0.05 m, 0.1 m and 0.2 m). Next, the canopy vegetation indices were obtained by mathematical transformation of canopy reflectance, and then sensitive image texture and vegetation indices by full subset regression method. Finally, Cubist, BPNN (Back Propagation Neural Network) and ELM (Extreme Learning Machine) methods were adopted to build the estimation models of the stomatal conductance (Gs) of winter wheat (between the sensitive image texture and Gs, and between vegetation index and Gs), and the water stress map was plotted based on the optimal Gs estimation model. The result showed: (i) the image texture obtained from the high-resolution multispectral image had a high correlation with Gs, and the image texture (VAR, HOM, CON, DIS, ENT and SEC) at 550 nm had the most significant correlation; (ii) the higher the ground resolution, the higher the correlation between the Gs and the image texture, the vegetation indices, respectively. The image texture with a ground resolution of 0.008 m combined with VIs and Gs had the highest correlation, and combining image texture and vegetation index can significantly improve the estimation accuracy of winter wheat Gs; (iii) Among the three estimation models, the BPNN model constructed by combining the image texture and VIs (MEA, VAR, ENT, DWSI and EXG) had the best estimation performance (Calibration: R c 2 = 0.899, RMSE c = 0.01, MAE c = 0.006; Validation: R c 2 = 0.834, RMSE v =;0.018, MAE v = 0.014), and an accurate estimation could even be achieved at a lower Gs value. Compared with the BPNN model solely based on VIs or image texture, the R c 2 of the BPNN model based on the combined variables increased by 24% and 22.48%, respectively. The paper presents a new image classification technique which first extracts rotation-invariant image texture features in singular value decomposition (SVD) and discrete wavelet transform (DWT) domains. Subsequently, it exploits a support vector machine (SVM) to perform image texture classification. For convenience, it is called the SRITCSD method hereafter. First, the method applies the SVD to enhance image textures of an image. Then, it extracts the texture features in the DWT domain of the SVD version of the image. Also, the SRITCSD method employs the SVM to serve as a multiclassifier for image texture features. Meanwhile, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is utilized to optimize the SRITCSD method, which is exploited to select a nearly optimal combination of features and a set of parameters utilized in the SVM. Source camera identification enables forensic investigator to discover the probable source model that are employed to acquire the image under investigation. It is important whenever digital content is presented as a silent witness. In this paper, we present a source camera identification method via image texture features that are extracted from well selected color model and color channel. Except to distinguish source camera models from images whatever they are captured via same or different brand cameras, the main contributions of the proposed method are as follows: (1) It can distinguish imaging device individuals from images even if they are taken by using same brand and model of devices. (2) It is robust for content-preserving manipulations or geometric distortions, such as JEPG compression, adding noise, and rotation and scaling. The experimental results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed method is satisfactory. We introduce a microstructure dataset focusing on complex, hierarchical structures found in a single Ultrahigh carbon steel under a range of heat treatments. Applying image representations from contemporary computer vision research to these microstructures, we discuss how both supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques can be used to yield insight into microstructural trends and their relationship to processing conditions. We evaluate and compare keypoint-based and convolutional neural network representations by classifying microstructures according to their primary microconstituent, and by classifying a subset of the microstructures according to the annealing conditions that generated them. Using t-SNE, a nonlinear dimensionality reduction and visualization technique, we demonstrate graphical methods of exploring microstructure and processing datasets, and for understanding and interpreting high-dimensional microstructure representations. The new method includes Extreme Gradient Boosting Machine integrated with Attractive Repulsive Center-Symmetric Local Binary Pattern (ARCSLBP-XGBoost) and Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN). Experimental results obtained from a repetitive random data sampling process with 20 runs show that the ARCSLBP-XGBoost is a capable approach for detecting asphalt pavement segregation with outstanding performance measurement metrics (classification accuracy rate = 0.95, precision = 0.93, recall = 0.98, and F1 score = 0.95). The Kolmogorov–Sinai (K–S) entropy is used to quantify the average amount of uncertainty of a dynamical system through a sequence of observations. Sequence probabilities therefore play a central role for the computation of the entropy rate to determine if the dynamical system under study is deterministically non-chaotic, deterministically chaotic, or random. This paper extends the notion of the K–S entropy to measure the entropy rate of imprecise systems using sequence membership grades, in which the underlying deterministic paradigm is replaced with the degree of fuzziness. While constructing sequential probabilities for the calculation of the K–S entropy is difficult in practice, the estimate of the K–S entropy in the setting of fuzzy sets in an image is feasible and can be useful for modeling uncertainty of pixel distributions in images. This paper presents an image watermarking technique for authentication and self-recovery called AuSR2. The AuSR2 scheme partitions the cover image into 3 × 3 non-overlapping blocks. The watermark data is embedded into two Least Significant Bit (LSB), consisting of two authentication bits and 16 recovery bits for each block. The texture of each block is preserved in the recovery data. Thus, each tampered pixel can be recovered independently instead of using the average block. The recovery process may introduce the tamper coincidence problem, which can be solved using image inpainting. The AuSR2 implements the LSB shifting algorithm to increase the imperceptibility by 2.8%. The experimental results confirm that the AuSR2 can accurately detect the tampering area up to 100%. The AuSR2 can recover the tampered image with a PSNR value of 38.11 dB under a 10% tampering rate. The comparative analysis proves the superiority of the AuSR2 compared to the existing schemes. Addressing global declines in biodiversity requires accurate assessments of key environmental attributes determining patterns of species diversity. Spatial heterogeneity of vegetation strongly affects species diversity patterns, and measures of vegetation structure derived from lidar and satellite image texture analysis correlate well with species richness. Our goal here was to gain a better understanding of why image texture explains bird richness, by linking field-based measures of vegetation structure directly with both image texture and bird richness. In addition, we asked how image texture compares with lidar-based canopy height variability, and how sensor resolution affects the explanatory power of image texture. We generated texture metrics from 30 m (Landsat 8) and 10 m (Sentinel-2) resolution Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) imagery from 2017 to 2019. We compared textures with vegetation metrics and bird richness data from 27 National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) terrestrial field sites across the continental US. Both 30 and 10 m resolution texture metrics were strongly correlated with lidar-based canopy height variability (|r| = 0.64 and 0.80, respectively). Texture was moderately correlated with field-based metrics, including variability of vegetation height and tree stem diameter, and foliage height diversity (range |r| = 0.31–0.52). Generally, 10 m resolution texture had stronger correlations with lidar and field-based metrics than 30 m resolution texture. In univariate linear models of total bird richness, 10 m resolution texture metrics also had higher explanatory power (up to R 2 adj = 0.45), than 30 m texture metrics (up to R 2 adj = 0.31). Among all metrics evaluated, the 10 m homogeneity texture was the best univariate predictor of total bird richness. In multivariate bird richness models that combined texture with lidar-based canopy height variability and field-based metrics, both 30 m and 10 m resolution texture metrics were selected in top-ranked models and independently contributed explanatory power (up to R 2 adj = 46%). Lidar-based canopy height variability was also selected in a top-ranked model of total bird richness, but independently contributed only 15% of the variance explained. Our results show satellite image texture characterized multiple features of structural and compositional vegetation heterogeneity, complemented more commonly used metrics in models of bird richness and for some guilds outperformed both lidar-based canopy height variability and field-based vegetation measurements. Fault detection and diagnosis of its severity for machine health monitoring can be stated as a nested classification problem. For a faulty bearing, each fault location whether belonging to inner race, outer race or the ball can be seen as multiclass classification with three classes while the varying degree of severity in each class can be viewed as a sub classification task. The peculiar vibration patterns generated from the flaws in different bearing parts and with varying degree of distortion can be classified into various classes and subclasses for analysis of vibration signatures. This paper proposes a multiclass support vector machines (MSVMs) based fault classification approach for fault diagnosis of ball bearings. The one dimensional vibration signals are converted to two dimensional gray scale images resulting in textural patterns which are then enhanced using the wave atom transform. Features such as semivariance, skewness and entropy are extracted from the texture images and the MSVM is then trained using feature matrices generated from feature vectors. The MSVM is trained in two phases; in the first phase, the classifier categorizes the location of the fault and in the second phase the classifier does the diagnosis regarding the size of the fault at that particular location. Recent asteroid missions have revealed that many sub-kilometer asteroids are rubble piles. Large parts of their surfaces are covered with boulders larger than tens of centimeters. An evaluation of the abundance and size distribution of boulders provides clues to understand surface processes on boulder-covered asteroids. Here we report a new method that automatically measures the abundance of small boulders (sub-pixel to a few pixels), whose boundaries cannot be recognized with visual inspection, by quantifying the surface radiance variation that occurs during the spinning of the asteroid. After validating our approach with previous boulder counting data, we apply this method to images of the asteroids Ryugu and Itokawa, which were visited by JAXA's Hayabusa and Hayabusa2, and obtain a global distribution of the boulders larger than 0.75–3 ​m, which corresponds to 1.5–6 pixels. We find that the boulder number density of this size range is smaller (1) on the western bulge than on the eastern hemisphere and (2) on the equatorial ridge than on the higher latitudes, both of which exceed the number density of boulders ​> ​5 ​m by an order of magnitude. The boulder size distribution at 1.25–20 ​m shows that the boulders smaller than 1 ​m are more abundant at the equator than at mid-latitudes, while those larger than 1 ​m in diameter are more abundant at mid-latitudes than at the equator. This contrast suggests size-dependent migration of boulders in the latitudinal direction. We also find that the typical boulder size (the size reaching the cumulative areal coverage of 50%) is 1.9 ​m at the equatorial region (10°S-10°N) while it is 2.6 ​m at mid-latitudes (40°S-50°S, 40°N-50°N). The typical boulder size is also smaller in the western bulge (2.0–2.2 ​m). We construct global maps of the power-law index of the size frequency distribution of boulders and find minor variations over the entire surface of Ryugu (−2.53 ​± ​0.03) for boulders larger than 1.25 ​m. This small variation suggests homogeneous size sorting processes on Ryugu. Surface roughness does not show a significant correlation with the v-band albedo but shows a high anti-correlation (R ​= ​−0.73) with the current geological slope on the eastern hemisphere. Similarity is one of the key processes of DNA sequence analysis in computational biology and bioinformatics. In nearly all research that explores evolutionary relationships, gene function analysis, protein structure prediction and sequence retrieving, it is necessary to perform similarity calculations. One major task in alignment-free DNA sequence similarity calculations is to develop novel mathematical descriptors for DNA sequences. In this paper, we present a novel approach to DNA sequence similarity analysis studies using similarity calculations of texture images. Texture analysis methods, which are a subset of digital image processing methods, are used here with the assumption that these calculations can be adapted to alignment-free DNA sequence similarity analysis methods. Gray-level textures were created by the values assigned to the nucleotides in the DNA sequences. Similarity calculations were made between these textures using histogram-based texture analyses based on first-order statistics. We obtained texture features for 3 different DNA data sets of different lengths, and calculated the similarity matrices. The phylogenetic relationships revealed by our method shows our trees to be similar to the results of the MEGA software, which is based on sequence alignment. Our findings show that texture analysis metrics can be used to characterize DNA sequences. We investigate the usefulness of quantitative ultrasound and B-mode texture features for characterization of ulnar nerve fascicles. Ultrasound data were acquired from cadaveric specimens using a nominal 30-MHz probe. Next, the nerves were extracted to prepare histology sections. Eighty-five fascicles were matched between the B-mode images and the histology sections. For each fascicle image, we selected an intra-fascicular region of interest. We used histology sections to determine features related to the concentration of collagen and myelin and ultrasound data to calculate the backscatter coefficient (-24.89 ± 8.31 dB), attenuation coefficient (0.92 ± 0.04 db/cm-MHz), Nakagami parameter (1.01 ± 0.18) and entropy (6.92 ± 0.83), as well as B-mode texture features obtained via the gray-level co-occurrence matrix algorithm. Significant Spearman rank correlations between the combined collagen and myelin concentrations were obtained for the backscatter coefficient (R = -0.68), entropy (R = -0.51) and several texture features. • Cities are dominated by private lands which presents a challenge for field study. • LiDAR data characterizes indices of avifaunal habitat on private residential lands. • NDVI, image texture, and land cover data are weaker predictors of urban avifauna. • LiDAR combined with street tree data has the strongest predictive power for urban birds. • High-resolution remote sensing data should be utilized in urban avifaunal studies. Urban ecosystems are dominated by private lands which poses a significant hurdle to performing field-based assessment of wildlife. An alternative approach is to characterize indices of animal habitat in difficult-to-access areas using data from airborne remote sensing platforms. Characterizing indices of wildlife habitat using remotely sensed data is common in natural systems but has received less attention within urban ecosystems. We tested the utility of using remotely sensed data from high-resolution airborne sensors, including LiDAR, a measure of vertical habitat structure, NDVI, a measure of greenness, image texture, a measure of horizontal habitat structure, and parcel level land-cover data, along with field-based street-tree measurements to predict bird abundance and richness across Greater Los Angeles, California, USA. We surveyed birds and gathered street-tree data on public lands of residential neighborhoods and processed the remote sensing data in 50-m and 300-m circular buffers of bird survey locations to capture data primarily on private, residential land across three winter field seasons (2016–18, 2019/20) at 23 locations along a tree-canopy cover gradient. Data from LiDAR processed as an index for the density of trees summarized in the 50-m and 300-m extents were the strongest univariate predictors of avifaunal abundance and richness explaining 75 % and 74 % of the likelihood in fitted models. NDVI, image texture, land cover, and street-tree density measures were weaker univariate predictors than models fitted with LiDAR data. Models including LiDAR and ground-based street-tree measurements accounted for upwards of 80 % of the variability in avifaunal abundance and richness, particularly for bird species associated with trees and shrubs. We recommend the prioritization of high-resolution remote sensing data, particularly LiDAR, in combination with field-based habitat measures e.g., street trees, to characterize indices of avifaunal habitat on public and private lands of cities, which could help to improve our understanding of the distribution of birds across urban areas. Due to the emphasis on sustainable development and environmental protection, searching for new technologies in the production of fruit and vegetables is essential. Organic farming using natural preparations is aimed to produce healthy food, rich in nutrients that is unmodified and uncontaminated. Pepper fruit is characterized by its valuable chemical composition and dietary and taste values. The available information on the influence of natural preparations on pepper fruit is insufficient. Therefore, this study was aimed at evaluating the influence of the natural preparations and plant extracts, such as organic fertilizer - Bio-algeen S90, growth and development stimulator - Natural Crop® SL, nettle extract (fertilizer with a killing and nutritional effect) on the chemical composition, structure (image texture), and sensory quality of Devito F 1 and Sprinter F 1 pepper fruit in organic greenhouse cultivation under the conditions for organic farming. The combination of measurements of chemical properties, flesh image features, and sensory analysis for assessing the quality of pepper treated with these preparations is a great novelty of this study. The obtained results showed that the use of Bio-algeen S90 and Natural Crop® SL had an impact on the increase in the total yield compared to the control samples. Furthermore, the application of Bio-algeen S90 and Natural Crop® SL increased the content of nutrients and health-promoting compounds, such as total sugars, l -ascorbic acid, total polyphenols, and carotenoids for both pepper cultivars Devito F 1 and Sprinter F 1. The applied natural preparations had an impact on the flesh structure, which was greater for pepper Devito F 1. The selected image textures allowed for distinguishing pepper slices in terms of natural preparations with higher accuracies for Devito F 1 than Sprinter F 1. However, in the case of both cultivars, the samples treated with NaturalCrop® SL were the most different from the control. Natural preparations were not affecting significantly the sensory attributes of pepper fruit. Objectives: To compare deep learning (True Fidelity, TF) and partial model based Iterative Reconstruction (ASiR-V) algorithm for image texture, low contrast lesion detectability and potential dose reduction.Methods: Anthropomorphic phantoms (mimicking non-overweight and overweight patient), containing lesions of 6 mm in diameter with 20HU contrast, were scanned at five different dose levels (2,6,10,15,20 mGy) on a CT system, using clinical routine protocols for liver lesion detection. Images were reconstructed using ASiR-V 0% (surrogate for FBP), 60 % and TF at low, medium and high strength. Noise texture was characterized by computing a normalized Noise Power Spectrum filtered by an eye filter. The similarity against FBP texture was evaluated using peak frequency difference (PFD) and root mean square deviation (RMSD). Low contrast detectability was assessed using a channelized Hotelling observer and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) was used as figure of merit. Potential dose reduction was calculated to obtain the same AUC for TF and ASiR-V.Results: FBP-like noise texture was more preserved with TF (PFD from -0.043mm-1 to -0.09mm-1, RMSD from 0.12mm-1 to 0.21mm-1) than with ASiR-V (PFD equal to 0.12 mm-1, RMSD equal to 0.53mm-1), resulting in a sharper image. AUC was always higher with TF than ASIR-V. In average, TF compared to ASiR-V, enabled a radiation dose reduction potential of 7%, 25 % and 33 % for low, medium and high strength respectively.Conclusion: Compared to ASIR-V, TF at high strength does not impact noise texture and maintains low contrast liver lesions detectability at significant lower dose. Abstract Microstructures were analyzed by an improved texture-based method using gray level co-occurrence matrices (GLCM). This method is based on a new parameter calculated from the stepwise rotation of images and thereby, calculating the values independent of the original texture orientation. The proposed method was applied on a database of etched and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-imaged low-carbon steel microstructures that are currently extensively used for automated microstructure classification. The results on the microstructures consisting of pearlitic, lath martensitic and lower bainitic constituents revealed that the method allows a significant separation of various types of microstructures in the ideal case of square-shaped cutouts. For complete grains of the corresponding second phases, the results imply that the application of a classifier is advantageous to distinguish them with a sufficient accuracy. The robustness and workability of the method was further demonstrated by discussing the effect of varying the image resolution and contrast/brightness settings during image acquisition. It was shown that such user-dependent setting parameters do not impair the separability of the steel constituents by using the proposed method. The quantitative measure of irregular arrangement, configuration and geometric pattern of microstructural features is often termed as fractal dimension (D f). The measurement of D f of a complex mixture of multiphase microstructure, comprised of crystals consisting of martensite, bainite, Fe 3 C and martensite/austenite (M/A) constituents' chaos networks in a typical dual phase steel (matrix ferrite) is carried out and interpreted with its respective phase fractions and resulting mechanical responses as a function of intercritical annealing schedule. An accurate tire-pavement noise prediction model is highly needed by transportation agencies and pavement designers during the porous asphalt mixture design to reduce the tire-pavement noise which has been recognized as a dominant contributor to the overall traffic noise. In this paper, the surface texture level and distributions of porous asphalt mixture are acquired by a recently developed program named as 2-Dimensional Image Texture Analysis Method (2D-ITAM). The acoustic absorption coefficient of porous asphalt mixture is calculated using a proposed sound absorption model based on the micro-structure of porous asphalt mixture. Also, a prediction model correlating the tire-pavement noise level with macro-texture and short wavelength of mega-texture of pavement is established using a multivariate non-linear regression analysis. This prediction model is validated through laboratory experiment demonstrating its effectiveness of predicting the tire-pavement noise level. The model is anticipated to serve as an improved tool which could be considered by practitioners in an optimized porous asphalt mixture design incorporating the evaluation of noise produced by asphalt pavement. In this study, a novel image processing approach based on the combination of Radon transform, pseudo Fourier-Mellin transform, and Fourier spectrum-based fractal dimension was proposed to exclude the undesirable effects of samples structural and positional changes on the image texture features. Images were obtained using a dryer equipped with perpendicular dual-view computer vision system (CVS) at hot air drying (HAD) temperatures of 50-90°C and superheated steam drying (SSD) temperatures of 110-120°C. Three drying medium velocities in the range of 1-2m/s were adjusted for each drying temperature. Unlike the drying medium velocity, the drying medium temperature had a significant effect on the visual texture parameters of the shrimp batch. The zero-order and fractional conversion models along with a modified Arrhenius model were found as the best models for explaining the kinetics of the visual texture features and the temperature dependency of their constants, respectively. Eventually, the linear and cubic regression models satisfactorily correlated the image texture features with the moisture ratio and geometrical attributes of the samples, respectively. This study innovatively applies digital imaging techniques to quantify the irregular nanoscale roughness of the surfaces of plasma-etched, hydrophobic polymer films. The main objective is to verify meaningful roughness indicators that predict the surface wettability by quantifying the surface nanostructures in a simple way. Five texture parameters were extracted from SEM images by box-counting and a gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) algorithm, which together provide 2D spatial information of roughness features. Also, five parameters related to height and aspect ratio profiles of roughness were obtained using AFM analysis. The 2D texture parameters and AFM roughness profiles were statistically correlated, and either set could be used to predict surface wettability with high explanatory power. The prediction was most powerful when variables of fractal dimension , arithmetic mean height Ra of roughness features in the assessed area, and skewness Rsk of height in the assessed area were used in the regression model. This result indicates that both the height profile and 2D spatial distribution of roughness features strongly affect surface wettability. The correlation of gray levels with the neighboring pixels was statistically correlated with Ra and Rsk , and a simple predictive model was developed using fractal dimension and correlation. This research is significant in that it explored a novel analytical approach in assessing the roughness characteristics to predict surface wettability.
