Sm-doped CaCl 2 , SrCl 2 , and BaCl 2 bulk crystals were synthesized using the conventional vertical Bridgman method, and the photoluminescence, radioluminescence, and detector properties were evaluated. The Sm-doped CaCl 2 , SrCl 2 , and BaCl 2 samples show a broad emission band at 750, 690, and 650 nm, respectively, which is attributable to the 5d-4f transitions of Sm2+. The pulse height spectra under 137Cs γ-rays (662 keV) show that the Sm-doped CaCl 2 and SrCl 2 exhibit 9300 and 33000 photons/MeV, respectively. These samples can be used for γ-ray measurements in the red to NIR region. • Sm-doped CaCl 2 , SrCl 2 , and BaCl 2 crystals were synthesized using the conventional vertical Bridgman method. • The photoluminescence, radioluminescence, and detector properties were evaluated. • The samples show a broad emission band at 600–800 nm due to Sm2+. • Sm-doped CaCl 2 , SrCl 2 , and BaCl 2 exhibit light yield of 9300, 33000, and 16000 photons/MeV, respectively.
