The asymptotic iteration method is a technique for solving analytically and approximately the linear second-order differential equation, especially the eigenvalue problems that frequently appear in theoretical and mathematical physics. The analysis and mathematical justifications of the success and failure of the asymptotic iteration method are detailed in this work. A theorem explaining why the asymptotic iteration method works for the eigenvalue problem is presented. A new expression for the Hulthén off-shell Jost function in all partial waves is constructed in its maximal reduced form. As a basic requirement the on-shell solutions are first developed by following the differential equation approach to the problem together with judicious exploitation of the properties of certain special functions of mathematical physics. Utilizing the properties of the Jost function, the binding energies and phase shifts for N-N and n-d systems are computed and found excellent agreement with standard data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we demonstrate that by using a mathematical physics approach--focusing attention on the physics and using mathematics as a tool--it is possible to visualize the formation of the transverse modes inside a cylindrical waveguide. The opposite (physical mathematics) approach looks at the mathematical problem and then tries to impose a physical interpretation. For cylindrical waveguides, the physical mathematics route leads to the Bessel differential equation, and it is argued that in the core of the waveguide there are only Bessel functions of the first kind in the description of the transverse modes. The Neumann functions are deemed non-physical due to their singularity at the origin and are eliminated from the final description of the solution. In this paper, by combining geometric optics and wave optics concepts, we show that the inclusion of the Neumann function is physically necessary to describe fully and properly the formation of the propagating transverse modes. Hyperbolic two-phase flow models have shown excellent ability for the resolution of a wide range of applications ranging from interfacial flows to fluid mixtures with several velocities. These models account for waves propagation (acoustic and convective) and consist in hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations. In this context, each phase is compressible and needs an appropriate convex equation of state (EOS). The EOS must be simple enough for intensive computations as well as boundary conditions treatment. It must also be accurate, this being challenging with respect to simplicity. In the present approach, each fluid is governed by a novel EOS named"Noble Abel stiffened gas," this formulation being a significant improvement of the popular "Stiffened Gas (SG)" EOS. It is a combination of the so-called "Noble-Abel" and "stiffened gas"equations of state that adds repulsive effects to the SG formulation. The determination of the various thermodynamic functions and associated coefficients is the aim of this article. We first use thermodynamic considerations to determine the different state functions such as the specific internal energy, enthalpy, and entropy. Then we propose to determine the associated coefficients for a liquid in the presence of its vapor. The EOS parameters are determined from experimental saturation curves. Some examples of liquid-vapor fluids are examined and associated parameters are computed with the help of the present method. Comparisons between analytical and experimental saturation curves show very good agreement for wide ranges of temperature for both liquid and vapor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents an experimental study of the dynamics of a chain sliding off of a table, using video analysis to test a theoretical model. The model consists of two variable-mass subsystems, with friction between the chain and the table and assumes that all links move at the same speed. In order to check the model, the chain position x(t) is obtained using video analysis. The smoothed function x(t) and its derivatives v(t) and a(t) are numerically computed using a local regression algorithm. In this way, the differential equation governing the motion can be directly tested, instead of comparing the position with the solution of the differential equation. Our procedure is very sensitive to deviations between the model and reality, so we can detect the point at which the chain ceases to be in tension and the model is no longer valid.
