The electrode optimization and rational design are of great significance for the performance enhancement of self-powered electrochromic devices (ECDs). It can be effectively enhanced by developing interfacial properties of electrodes, which can promote the internal ion transport within functional components consisting of an electrode, electrochromic layer, and electrolyte layer and thus obtain performance improvement of fabricated devices. This work aims to construct the electrode of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) on different substrates and promote interface performance of the prepared electrodes via inheriting the surface topography of substrates. Besides, the prepared PEDOT:PSS electrodes as a dual-function layer including the electrochromic and electrode layer are employed to assemble the ECDs. It is found that the intrinsic roughness of the paper substrate can facilitate the electrochemical performance of the prepared PEDOT:PSS electrode on it effectively, thereby showing a superior electrochemical surface area and diffusion coefficient as well as a lower charge-transfer resistance of 13.56 Ω. Similarly, for the prepared self-powered ECD on the paper substrate, it also indicates a high light absorption property (0.413), well-defined electrochromic contrast (33.09), fast switching (τ c = 4.0 s, τ b = 6.8 s), high coloration efficiency (92.275 cm 2 C -1 ), high areal capacity (10.93 mAh m -2 ) at 0.01 mA cm -2 , and lower equivalent series resistance (176.2 Ω) in comparison to parallel ECDs on the PET and glass substrate. Leveraging the intrinsic roughness of the substrate is able to enhance the electrochemical performance of electrodes, which can also provide a new strategy for the construction of high-performance self-powered ECDs.

Diabetic wounds are prone to recurrent infections, often leading to delayed healing. To address this challenge, we developed a chitin-copper sulfide (CuS@CH) composite sponge, which combines bacterial trapping with near-infrared (NIR) activated phototherapy for treating infected diabetic wounds. CuS nanoparticles were synthesized and incorporated in situ within the sponge using a chitin assisted biomineralization strategy. The positively charged chitin surface effectively adhered bacteria, while NIR irradiation of CuS generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) heat and Cu 2+ to rapidly damage the trapped bacteria. This synergistic effect resulted in an exceptional antibacterial performance against E. coli (∼99.9%) and S. aureus (∼99.3%). The bactericidal mechanism involved NIR-induced glutathione oxidation, membrane lipid peroxidation, and increased membrane permeability. In diabetic mouse models, the CuS@CH sponge accelerated the wound healing of S. aureus infected wounds by facilitating collagen deposition and reducing inflammation. Furthermore, the sponge demonstrated good biocompatibility. This dual-functional platform integrating bacterial capture and NIR-triggered phototherapy shows promise as an antibacterial wound dressing to promote healing of infected diabetic wound.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered as promising energy storage systems due to the high energy density of 2600 W h kg -1 . However, the practical application of Li-S batteries is hindered by the inadequate conductivity of sulfur and Li 2 S, as well as the shuttle effect caused by polysulfides during the charge-discharge process. Introducing a conductive interlayer between the cathode and the separator to physically resist polysulfides represents an effective and straightforward approach to mitigate the shuttle effect in Li-S batteries. In this paper, an ultrathin (<1 μm) 2D-2D MXene-LDH interlayer with high polysulfide adsorption ability was introduced to Li-S batteries. The synergistic effect between MXene and layered double hydroxide greatly improved the adsorption effect of the interlayers: the conductive Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene chemically adsorbs polysulfides and promotes their fast transfer, and the NiCo-LDH alleviates the restack of MXene and facilitates Li + diffusion. After inserting the MXene-LDH interlayer, the Li-S batteries exhibit an enhanced specific capacity of 1137.6 mA h g -1 at 0.1 C and retain 622.6 mA h g -1 after 100 cycles. The ultrathin 2D-2D interlayer offers a feasible way for the development of highly efficient and lightweight interlayers in Li-S batteries.

Conductive hydrogels have been increasingly employed to construct wearable mechanosensors due to their excellent mechanical flexibility close to that of soft tissues. In this work, piezoelectric hydrogels are prepared through free radical copolymerization of acrylamide (AM) and acrylonitrile (AN) and further utilized in assembling flexible wearable mechanosensors. Introduction of the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) component in the copolymers endows the hydrogels with excellent piezoelectric properties. Meanwhile, significant enhancement of mechanical properties has been accessed by forming dipole-dipole interactions, which results in a tensile strength of 0.51 MPa. Flexible wearable mechanosensors are fabricated by utilizing piezoelectric hydrogels as key signal converting materials. Self-powered piezoelectric pressure sensors are assembled with a sensitivity ( S ) of 0.2 V kPa -1 . Additionally, resistive strain sensors (gauge factor (GF): 0.84, strain range: 0-250%) and capacitive pressure sensors ( S : 0.23 kPa -1 , pressure range: 0-8 kPa) are fabricated by utilizing such hydrogels. These flexible wearable mechanosensors can monitor diverse body movements such as joint bending, walking, running, and stair climbing. This work is anticipated to offer promising soft materials for efficient mechanical-to-electrical signal conversion and provides new insights into the development of various wearable mechanosensors.

Enhancing the antimicrobial activity of high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters while maintaining filtration efficiency and pressure drop is currently an urgent issue for preventing the spread of pathogenic microorganisms. Herein, inspired by vines which can enwind fences to fix as well as decorate them, a flexible antimicrobial chitin nanofiber (ChNF@CuO x ) was fabricated and loaded onto the rigid glass fiber (GF) skeleton of a HEPA filter. Through the physical interaction, ChNF@CuO x was spontaneously enwound on GF, and ChNF@CuO x itself interweaved to form a new nanonetwork between the GF skeleton. The obtained antimicrobial air filter (ChNF@CuO x /GF) with a unique nanonetwork increased the filtration efficiency of the HEPA filter. Meanwhile, it possessed excellent inactivation ability against Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli , and Candida albicans due to the urchin-like in situ grown CuO x on the ChNF. In particular, the oxygen vacancies generated unexpectedly in CuO x enabled it to produce reactive oxygen species. After eight cycles of antimicrobial assays, the antimicrobial rates of bacteria were higher than 99.5%, and those of fungi were greater than 98.3%. The successful synthesis of antimicrobial fibers and the construction of multidimensional nanoscale structures through a simple postprocessing method provide a new design mentality for antimicrobial functionalization for HEPA filters.

Circular bacteriocins are known for their structural stability and effective antimicrobial properties, positioning them as potential natural food preservatives. However, their widespread application is impeded by restricted availability. This research developed a total biosynthesis platform for circular bacteriocins, with a focus on AS-48 by involving recombinant production of the linear precursor in Escherichia coli , followed by enzymatic cyclization of the precursor into cyclic AS-48 using the ligase butelase-1 in vitro . An important discovery is that, aside from fusion tags, the C-terminal motif LE and LEKKK also could affect the expression yield of the precursor. This biosynthesis platform is both versatile and high-yielding, achieving yields of 10-20 mg/L of AS-48. Importantly, the biosynthetic AS-48 exhibited a secondary structure and antimicrobial activities comparable to those of the native molecules. As such, this work proposes an effective synthetic approach for circular bacteriocins, facilitating their advancement and application in the food industry.

High-strength, lightweight, ultrathin, and flexible electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with a high shielding effectiveness (SE) are essential for modern integrated electronics. Herein, cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are employed to homogeneously disperse graphene nanoplates (GNPs) into an aramid nanofiber (ANF) network and silver nanowire (AgNW) network, respectively, producing high-performance nanopapers. These nanopapers, featuring nacre-mimetic microstructures and layered architectures, exhibited high tensile strength (601.11 MPa) and good toughness (103.56 MJ m -3 ) with a thickness of only 24.58 μm. Their specific tensile strength reaches 447.59 MPa·g -1 ·cm 3 , which is 1.74 times that of titanium alloys (257 MPa·g -1 ·cm 3 ). The AgNW/GNP composite conductive layers exhibit an electrical conductivity of 12010.00 S cm -1 , providing the nanopapers with great EMI shielding performance, achieving an EMI SE of 63.87 dB and an EMI SE/t of 25978.80 dB cm -1 . The nanopapers also show reliable durability, retaining a tensile strength of 500.96 MPa and an EMI SE of 57.59 dB after 120,000 folding cycles. Additionally, they have a good electrical heating performance with a fast response time, low driving voltage, effective deicing capability, and reliable heating capacity in water. This work presents a strategy to develop a high-performance nanopaper, showing great potential for applications in electromagnetic compatibility, national defense, smart electronics, and human health.

A new Candida parapsilosis ACCC 20221 ( C. parapsilosis ACCC 20221) whole-cell catalyst with a high phenolic glycoside esters synthesis activity and large biomass was obtained after culture with glucose. The possible mechanisms were revealed by using comparative proteomics. It found the expression of proteins involved in post-translational modification, protein turnover, and chaperone, and RNA processing and modification was upregulated, which ensured the metabolic balance and accurate translation, correct folding, and post-translational modification of proteins, thus enhancing the production of lipases in C. parapsilosis ACCC 20221 cultured with glucose. Moreover, the glycolysis pathway, tricarboxylic acid cycle, and fatty acids synthesis were enhanced, while the β-oxidation of fatty acids was weakened in C. parapsilosis ACCC 20221 cells cultured with glucose, which led to an increase in energy generation and cell membrane synthesis; thus, large biomass was obtained. In addition, CCE40476.1 and CAC86400.1, which were likely to exert arbutin esters synthesis activity in C. parapsilosis ACCC 20221, were screened, and it was found that vinyl propionate could easily enter the catalytic pocket of CCE40476.1 and form hydrogen bonding interactions with Leu191 and Ser266.

Due to the heterogeneity of recycled paper materials and the production conditions, pollutants in papermaking wastewater fluctuate sharply over time. Quality control of the papermaking wastewater treatment process (PWTP) is challenging and costly. As regulations are also growing about the environmental effects of the PWTP on greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, energy consumption, etc., the PWTP formulates a complex multiobjective optimization problem. This research established a multiagent deep reinforcement learning framework to simultaneously optimize process cost, energy consumption, and GHG emission in the PWTP, subjected to the effluent quality, to realize economic, energy, and environmental (3E) goals. The biological treatment process of wastewater in paper mills was simulated using benchmark simulation model no. 1 (BSM1). The data generated based on the BSM manual was utilized for model training, and real data acquired from a local papermaking factory was used to estimate the model performance. The results show that the proposed method outperforms conventional techniques in identifying the best control strategies for multiple targets.

Carbohydrate-binding modules (CBM) have emerged as useful tools for a wide range of tasks, including the use as purification tags or for cellulose fiber modification. For this purpose, the CBM needs to be attached to a target protein leading to large constructs. We investigated if short peptides from the carbohydrate binding site of CBMs can bind in a similar way as native, full-length CBMs to nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) or cotton linter paper. We designed our cellulose-binding peptides to be less hydrophobic and shorter than those previously reported. Starting from the binding site of Cel7A-CBM1, we incorporated the essential amino acids involved in cellulose binding into our peptides. These peptides, as well as control peptides with scrambled sequences or a lack of essential amino acids, bound to cellulose with similar affinity as CBM regardless of their secondary structure, sequence, or hydrophobicity. This unspecific mode of cellulose binding displayed by the presented peptides may be exploited to functionalize cellulose-based biomaterials by means of peptide-conjugates.

To increase the value of waste coconut shells and further broaden their use by biorefining, a milder and greener method to prepare cellulose nanofibers (CCNFs) was developed. The CCNFs were separated from coir fibers by using peroxyformic acid and alkali treatment in combination with high-power ultrasonication. The basic properties of the CCNFs were comprehensively evaluated using scanning and transmission electron microscopy, spectroscopy, diffraction, and thermogravimetric techniques. The results revealed that the developed preparation method provided CCNFs with typical nanocellulose sizes, structures, and properties. Nanocellulose-reinforced poly(vinyl acetate) (PVA) composite films were prepared using the CCNFs, and their mechanical properties, transmittance, crystallinity, and thermal stability were investigated. The elongation at break of the film with 8% CCNFs was 612%. The tensile strength of the films with 4 and 12% CCNFs was 41.3 MPa, which was higher than that of a PVA film (36 MPa). The transmittance and thermal stability of the PVA composite films were not appreciably affected by the CCNFs. Strong and transparent nanocellulose/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposite films with high filler content (≥50 wt %) are emerging as versatile materials for advanced applications due to their excellent optical, barrier, mechanical, and thermal properties, and environmental friendliness. Nonetheless, these films undergo a notable decline in optical and mechanical properties at high MMT loadings. This study first demonstrates that calcium-ion-induced tactoids are the key factor causing disordered structures in nanocomposite films, leading to the degradation of optical and mechanical properties. We then address this issue by employing a Ca 2+ removal strategy─dialysis. Through removing 43% of free Ca 2+ , simultaneous improvements in both properties are observed. For example, in a nanocomposite film with 70 wt % MMT, light transmittance increases from 75.9 to 91.6%, and the tensile strength rises from 100.4 to 139.4 MPa. This work offers insights into developing strong and transparent nanocomposite films with high MMT contents.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ), since the pioneering work on visible-light photocatalytic water splitting in 2009, has emerged as a highly promising advanced material for environmental and energetic applications, including photocatalytic degradation of pollutants, photocatalytic hydrogen generation, and carbon dioxide reduction. Due to its distinctive two-dimensional structure, excellent chemical stability, and distinctive optical and electrical properties, g-C 3 N 4 has garnered a considerable amount of interest in the field of biomedicine in recent years. This review focuses on the fundamental properties of g-C 3 N 4 , highlighting the synthesis and modification strategies associated with the interfacial structures of g-C 3 N 4 -based materials, including heterojunction, band gap engineering, doping, and nanocomposite hybridization. Furthermore, the biomedical applications of these materials in various domains, including biosensors, antimicrobial applications, and photocatalytic degradation of medical pollutants, are also described with the objective of spotlighting the unique advantages of g-C 3 N 4 . A summary of the challenges faced and future prospects for the advancement of g-C 3 N 4 -based materials is presented, and it is hoped that this review will inspire readers to seek further new applications for this material in biomedical and other fields.

Intrinsic conducting hydrogels fabricated in situ at low temperatures with self-adhesive properties and excellent flexibility hold significant promise for energy applications and outdoor damage repair. However, challenges such as low polymerization rate and self adhesion, insufficient ionic conductivity, inflexibility, and poor stability under extreme cold conditions have hindered their utilization as high-performance sensors. In this study, we designed an intrinsic conducting hydrogel (PADOC) composed of acrylic acid, acryloyloxyethyltrimethylammonium chloride, N , N '-methylenebis(2-propenamide), self-fabricated oxidized curdlan (OC), and a water/glycerol binary solvent. The novel hydrogel exhibited rapid gelation (30 s) at 0 °C facilitated by the promotion of OC, without the need for external energy input. Our findings from FT-IR, NMR, XPS, XRD, EPR spectra, MS, and DSC analyses revealed that OC underwent selective oxidation via the evolved Fenton reaction at 30 °C, serving as bioaccelerators for PAD polymerization. Due to OC's reductive structure and increased solubility, the reaction activation energy of the PAD polymerization reaction significantly reduced from 103.2 to 54.4 kJ/mol. PADOC ionic hydrogels demonstrated an electrical conductivity of 1.00 S/m, 0.7% low hysteresis, 39.6 kPa self-adhesive strength, and 923% strain-at-break and kept even at -20 °C owing to dense hydrogen and ionic bonds between PAD and OC chains. Furthermore, PADOC ionic hydrogels exhibited antifatigue properties for 10 cycles (0-100%) due to electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. Remarkably, using a self-designed device, the rapid polymerization of PADOC effectively repaired copper pipeline leakage under 86 kPa pressure and detected 1% strain variation as a strain sensor. This study opens a new avenue for the rapid gelation of self-adhesive and flexible intrinsic conducting hydrogels with robust sensor performance.

Adhesion between solid materials is caused by intermolecular forces that only take place if the adhering surfaces are at nanoscale contact (NSC) (i.e., 0.1-0.4 nm. To study adhesion, NSC can be evaluated with Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET). FRET uses the interaction of compatible fluorescence molecules to measure the nanometer distance between bonded surfaces. For this, each surface is labeled with one fluorescence dye, named the Donor or Acceptor. If these molecules are in NSC, a nonradiative Donor-Acceptor energy transfer will occur and can be detected using FRET spectroscopy. Here, for the first time, we introduce an innovative concept of a FRET-based NSC measurement employing dye-nanolayer films prepared by a physical vapor deposition (PVD). The dye nanolayers were prepared by PVD from the vaporization of the Donor and Acceptor molecules separately. The selected molecules, 7-Amino-4-methyl-cumarin (C120) and 5(6)-Carboxy-2',7'-dichlor-fluorescein (CDCF), present high quantum yields (QY, QY D = 0.91 and QY A = 0.64) and a low FRET distance range of 0.6-2.2 nm, adequate for the study of NSC. The produced dye-nanolayer films exhibit a uniform dye distribution (verified by atomic force microscopy) and suitable fluorescence intensities. To validate the NSC measurements, FRET spectroscopy experiments were performed with bonded dye-nanolayer films prepared under different loads (from 1.5 to 140 bar), thus creating different degrees of NSC. The results show an increase in FRET intensity ( R 2 = 0.95) with the respective adhesion energy between the films, which is directly related to the degree of NSC. Hence, this work establishes FRET as an experimental technique for the measurement of NSC, and its relation to surface adhesion. Additionally, thanks to the FRET dye-nanolayer approach, the method can be employed on arbitrary surfaces. A new type of carbonized polymer dot was prepared by the one-step hydrothermal method of triethoxylsilane (TEOS) and citric acid (CA). The sensor made from carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) showed superior gas sensing performance toward ammonia at room temperature. The Si, O-codoped CPDs exhibited superior ammonia sensing performance at room temperature, including a low practical limit of detection (pLOD) of 1 ppm ( R a / R g : 1.10, 1 ppm), short response/recovery time (30/36 s, 1 ppm), high humidity resistance (less than 5% undulation when changing relative humidity to 80 from 30%), high stability (less than 5% initial response undulation after 120 days), reliable repeatability, and high selectivity against other interferential gases. The gas sensing mechanism was investigated through control experiments and in situ FTIR, indicating that Si, O-codoping essentially improves the electron transfer capability of CPDs and synergistically dominates the superior ammonia sensing properties of the CPDs. This work presents a facile strategy for constructing novel high-performance, single-component carbonized polymer dots for gas sensing.

As steric hindrance, methoxy groups are limiting the valorization of hardwood lignin. This paper reports a novel method of self-cross-linking of the syringaldehyde with activated methoxy groups (-OCH 3 ) via cross-coupling reaction to obtain thermosetting polymers for lignin-based wood adhesives. The methoxy groups of syringaldehyde have been activated via cross-coupling reaction by substituting Ar-OCH 3 with Ar-CH 2 -SiMe 3 , and dichloromethane, leading to cross-linking via methylene bridges to build a thermosetting polymer. FTIR spectra showed a decrease in the intensity of a -CH 3 and -OH group, owing to the substitution of the methoxy group. 13 C NMR spectra also supported these results with the -SiMe 3 signal that disappeared after the cross-linking reaction. Furthermore, cross-linking between the activated methoxy groups was confirmed with a strong exothermic peak at 130 °C, resulting in an increase in the adhesion strength as hot-pressing temperature increased from 160 to 180 °C. These results suggest that the cross-linking between the activated methoxy groups of syringaldehyde is an important understanding of valorizing hardwood lignin via building thermosetting polymers for lignin-based adhesives., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2024 The Authors. Titanium-oxo clusters, with their robust structure and suitable optical and electronic properties, have been widely investigated as photocatalysts. Heterometallic Ti/M-oxo clusters provide additional tunability and functionality, which enable systematic structure-activity investigations to elucidate the reaction mechanisms and improve the catalyst design. Incorporating cerium into Ti-oxo clusters can provide additional redox (Ce IV /Ce III ) and oxygen harvesting ability, but to date, only a limited number of structurally defined titanium-cerium (Ti/Ce) clusters have been reported due to their synthetic challenges. Herein, we report the synthesis and photocatalytic properties of two structurally defined Ti/Ce-oxo clusters, Ti 8 Ce 2 (BA) 16 and Ti 9 Ce 4 (BA) 20 , as well as a TiCe-BA cluster with a calculated formula of Ti 20 Ce 9 O 36 (BA) 42 . Photocatalytic study of these clusters demonstrates that the amount of Ce 3+ species greatly impacts its photocatalytic oxidation performance, and their superior photocatalytic reactivity toward aerobic alcohol oxidation can be contributed to the synergistic effects of the multiple radical species generated upon light absorption. This work represents a significant milestone in the construction of stable Ti/Ce-oxo clusters, enriching the current library of known heterometallic Ti/M-oxo clusters, and providing a series of crystalline materials with great promise of photoluminescence and photovoltaic chemistry.

Despite the potential of lignocellulose in manufacturing value-added chemicals and biofuels, its efficient biotechnological conversion by enzymatic hydrolysis still poses major challenges. The complex interplay between xylan, cellulose, and lignin in fibrous materials makes it difficult to assess underlying physico- and biochemical mechanisms. Here, we reduce the complexity of the system by creating matrices of cellulose, xylan, and lignin, which consists of a cellulose base layer and xylan/lignin domains. We follow enzymatic degradation using an endoxylanase by high-speed atomic force microscopy and surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy to obtain morphological and kinetic data. Fastest reaction kinetics were observed at low lignin contents, which were related to the different swelling capacities of xylan. We demonstrate that the complex processes taking place at the interfaces of lignin and xylan in the presence of enzymes can be monitored in real time, providing a future platform for observing phenomena relevant to fiber-based systems.

Investigating the structure-property correlation in porous materials is a fundamental and consistent focus in various scientific domains, especially within sorption research. Metal oxide clusters with capping ligands, characterized by intrinsic cavities formed through specific solid-state packing, demonstrate significant potential as versatile platforms for sorption investigations due to their precisely tunable atomic structures and inherent long-range order. This study presents a series of Ti 8 Ce 2 -oxo clusters with subtle variations in coordinated linkers and explores their sorption behavior. Notably, Ti 8 Ce 2 -BA (BA denotes benzoic acid) manifests a distinctive two-step profile during the CO 2 adsorption, accompanied by a hysteresis loop. This observation marks a new instance within the metal oxide cluster field. Of intrigue, the presence of unsaturated Ce(IV) sites was found to be correlated with the stepped sorption property. Moreover, the introduction of an electrophilic fluorine atom, positioned ortho or para to the benzoic acid, facilitated precise control over gate pressure and stepped sorption quantities. Advanced in situ techniques systematically unraveled the underlying mechanism behind this unique sorption behavior. The findings elucidate that robust Lewis base-acid interactions are established between the CO 2 molecules and Ce ions, consequently altering the conformation of coordinated linkers. Conversely, the F atoms primarily contribute to gate pressure variation by influencing the Lewis acidity of the Ce sites. This research advances the understanding in fabricating metal-oxo clusters with structural flexibility and provides profound insights into their host-guest interaction motifs. These insights hold substantial promise across diverse fields and offer valuable guidance for future adsorbent designs grounded in fundamental theories of structure-property relationships.

Zero-dimensional metal halides have received wide attention due to their structural diversity, strong quantum confinement, and associated excellent photoluminescence properties. A reversible and tunable luminescence would be desirable for applications such as anti-counterfeiting, information encryption, and artificial intelligence. Yet, these materials are underexplored, with little known about their luminescence tuning mechanisms. Here we report a pyramidal coplanar dimer, (TBA)Sb 2 Cl 7 (TBA = tetrabutylammonium), showing broadband emission wavelength tuning (585-650 nm) by simple thermal treatment. We attribute the broad color change to structural disorder induced by varying the heat treatment temperatures. Increasing the heating temperature transitions the material from long-range ordered crystalline phase to highly disordered glassy phase. The latter exhibits stronger electron-phonon coupling, enhancing the self-trapped exciton emission efficiency. The work provides a new material platform for manifold optical anti-counterfeiting applications and sheds light on the emission color tuning mechanisms for further design of stimuli-responsive materials.

Despite the fascinating developments in design and synthesis of artificial molecular machines operating at the nanoscales, translating molecular motion along multiple length scales and inducing mechanical motion of a three-dimensional macroscopic entity remains an important challenge. The key to addressing this amplification of motion relies on the effective organization of molecular machines in a well-defined environment. By taking advantage of long-range orientational order and hierarchical structures of liquid crystals and unidirectional rotation of light-driven molecular motors, we report here photoresponsive biomimetic functions of liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) by the repetitive unidirectional rotation of molecular motors using 3D printing. Molecular motors were built in the main chain of liquid crystals oligomers to serve as photoactuators. The oligomers were then used as the ink, and liquid crystal elastomers with different morphologies were printed. The obtained LCEs are able to conduct multiple types of motions including bending, helical coiling, closing of petals, and flipping of wings of a butterfly upon UV illumination, which paves the way for future design of responsive materials with enhanced complex actuating functions.

A practical and efficient method to access polysubstituted aryl sulfides has been discovered via a Lewis acid-catalyzed reaction between alkynyl sulfide and 2-pyrone, involving a Diels-Alder/retro-Diels-Alder pathway. Alkynyl sulfide as an electron-rich dienophile and 2-pyrones as electron-poor dienes are conjunctively transformed into a series of polysubstituted aryl sulfides with broad functional group compatibility in good to excellent yields (40 examples, 43-88% yield). The robustness and practicality of the protocol has been demonstrated through gram-scale synthesis and the ease of transformation of the resulting products.

To address the challenges associated with formaldehyde emissions in engineered wood adhesives and simultaneously enhance adhesive properties related to water resistance, fire resistance, and mold resistance, a novel environmentally sustainable biomass-based adhesive was formulated. In this work, kraft lignin was carboxymethylated and then blended with the soy protein isolate (SPI)-based adhesive, the dry and wet shear strength of the plywood bonded by the resultant adhesive was enhanced from 1.10 and 0.63 MPa to 1.73 and 1.23 MPa, respectively, resulting in improvements of 157% and 195%. Carboxymethylated lignin (CML) significantly improved the mold resistance and flame-resistance residual rate of the adhesive and decreased the water absorption rate from 190% to 108%. Furthermore, the adhesive exhibits outstanding flame-retardancy, with self-extinguishing capability rendering it suitable for industrial production. In addition, we also evaluated the performances of resulting adhesives cured with different diepoxides and triepoxides, and the comparisons of the adhesive in this work to commercial urea glue and soy protein-based adhesives were conducted. We describe herein a novel, general, and robust approach to structurally diversified alkenyl nitriles through a Rh-catalyzed cyano transfer reaction between alkynyl-malononitrile derivatives and aryl/alkenyl boronic acids. This reaction exhibits high chemo- and regioselectivity and a broad substrate scope. The tetrasubstituted alkenyl dinitriles (34 examples, average 58% yield) are obtained through substrate tuning and ligand control.

Prehydrolysis liquid (PHL) from dissolving pulp and biorefinery industries is rich in saccharides and lignin, being considered as a potential source of value-added materials and platform molecules. This study proposed an environmentally friendly and simple method to prepare morphologically controllable hollow lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) and levulinic acid (LA) from PHL. In the first step, after hydrothermal treatment of PHL with p -toluenesulfonic acid ( p -TsOH), lignin with a uniform molecular weight was obtained to prepare LNPs. The prepared LNPs have an obvious hollow structure, with an average size of 490-660 nm, and exhibit good stability during 30 days of storage. When the as-obtained LNPs were used as a sustained-release agent for amikacin sulfate, the encapsulation efficiency reached over 70% and the release efficiency within 40 h reached 69.2% in a pH 5.5 buffer. Subsequently, the remaining PHL that contains saccharides was directly used for LA production under the catalysis of p -TsOH. At 150 °C for 1.5 h, the LA yield reached 58.4% and remained at 56% after 5 cycles of p -TsOH. It is worth noting that only p -TsOH was used as a reactive reagent throughout the entire preparation process. Overall, this study provided a novel pathway for the integrated utilization of PHL and showed the immense potential of the preparation and application of LNPs.

Ion channels play a crucial role in the transmembrane transport and signal transmission of substances. In animals, transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) and transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) serve as temperature-sensing units in sensory nerve endings. TRPV1 allows cells to sense heat, while TRPM8 enables them to detect cold, both serving to protect living organisms from harmful substances and environments. However, almost all studies on artificial nanochannels have mainly focused on TRPV1-like "forward nanochannels" thus far, which are incapable of "backward" responding to heat. So, we constructed an innovational TRPM8-inspired "retrorse nanochannel" through internal modification of poly(acrylamide- co -acrylonitrile) [P(AAm- co -AN)] with an upper critical solution temperature (UCST). Our results demonstrated that the internally modified nanochannels exhibited rapid, stable, and reversible heat-closing capability and converse temperature dependence within the typical temperature range of 25-40 °C. The biomimetic ion channel can effectively function as a facile, precise, and reversible thermal gate for controlling the transport of ions and substances. It also offers a promising microscopic technology for managing thermal effects on the substance, fluid, energy, and even signal delivery.

The efficient synthesis of γ-thiapyrones by a base-mediated Diels-Alder/retro-Diels-Alder reaction of α-pyrones with 5- H -1,2,3-thiadiazoles is reported herein. Thioketenes in situ generated from thiadiazoles as electron-poor dienophile and electron-rich 4-hydroxy-2-pyrones as dienes are conjunctively transformed into a series of γ-thiapyrones with broad functional group compatibility in good to excellent yields (35 examples, 67% average yield).

Identifying the composition of a solution using acoustics remains a challenge. It is known that for low salt concentrations the speed of sound in water increases linearly with the concentration of the electrolyte, but the contribution of individual cations and anions is unknown. We introduce the concept of intrinsic sound speed A i to quantify the contribution of ions to the speed of sound. We found that cations increase the speed of sound in water whereas anions decrease the speed of sound. Hydration layers around the ions play a major role. Because cations have a hydration layer thicker than that of anions, their contribution to the speed of sound is larger than that of anions. Experimental data on salts not used to determine the contribution of individual ions are in quantitative agreement with the predicted values. Our method can be applied to various systems containing small quantities of ions, molecules, or particles. With the knowledge that cations increase the speed of sound, we were able to explain previously unexplained data in the literature.

Ionic liquids (ILs) are an emerging materials' class with applications in areas such as energy storage, catalysis, and biomass dissolution and processing. Their physicochemical properties including surface tension, viscosity, density and their interplay between cation and anion chemistry are decisive in these applications. For many commercially available ILs, a full set of physicochemical data is not available. Here, we extend the knowledge base by providing physicochemical properties such as density (20 and 25 °C), refractive index (20 and 25 °C), surface tension (23 °C, including polar and dispersive components), and shear viscosity (ambient atmosphere, shear rate 1-200 s -1 ), for 20 commercial ILs. A correlation between the crystal volume, dispersive surface tension, and shear viscosity is introduced as a predictive tool, allowing for viscosity estimation. Systematic exploration of cation/anion alkyl side chain lengths reveals the impact on the IL's physicochemical attributes. Increasing the anion's headgroup decreases surface tension up to 35.7% and consequently shear viscosity. We further demonstrate that the dispersive part of the surface tension linearly correlates with the refractive index of the ionic liquid. Phenanthridinone is a significant moiety in pharmaceutical and material science; thus, it is highly desirable to develop an efficient and robust method to construct phenanthridinone from readily available starting materials. Herein, we report a Ru-catalyzed C-H arylation of aromatic carboxylic acids with ortho -haloanilines, followed by intramolecular dehydration to afford phenanthridinones in high yields.

We report the ionothermal carbonization (ITC) of lignocellulosic biomass in imidazolium tetrachloroferrate ionic liquids (ILs) as an advantageous approach for the preparation of nanostructured carbonaceous materials, namely, ionochars. In a previous study, we investigated the role of the imidazolium cation and demonstrated the possibility of controlling both the textural and morphological properties of ionochars by cation engineering. Although essential for providing intermediate Lewis acidity and relatively high thermal stability, the role of the chloroferrate anion is still open to debate. Herein, we investigated the ITC of sugarcane bagasse and its main component, cellulose, in 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium ILs with different chloroferrate anions. We identified anionic speciation and its impact on the properties of the IL by Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. The obtained ionochars were characterized by gas physisorption, electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and 13 C solid-state CP-MAS NMR spectroscopy. We show that the anionic species have a predominant impact on the textural and morphological properties of the ionochars.

Flexible pressure sensors (FPSs) based on biomass materials have gained considerable attention for their potential in wearable electronics, human-machine interaction, and environmental protection. Herein, flexible silver nanowire-dual-cellulose paper (SNdCP) containing common cellulose fibers, cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), and silver nanowires (AgNWs) for FPSs was assembled by a facile papermaking strategy. Compared with bacterial cellulose (BC) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), CNFs possess better dimensions and reinforcement, which enables the composite paper to exhibit better mechanical properties (tensile stress of 164.65 MPa) and electrical conductivity (11600 S·m -1 ), providing more possibilities for FPSs. Benefiting from these advantages, we construct an easily processable and sensitive human-interactive FPS based on a composite paper with high sensitivity (0.050 kPa -1 ), fast response/recovery time (158/95 ms), and exceptional stability (>1000 bending cycles), capable of responding to finger motions, voice recognition, and human pulses; through further employment as the array unit and a control circuit, the observed highly adaptive mechano-electric transformability and functions are well maintained. Overall, a facile and versatile strategy with the potential to provide clues for the fabrication of cellulose-based FPSs with outstanding performance was introduced.

A rhodium-catalyzed 3-component conjunctive diastereo- and regioselective arylamidation of (homo)allylic sulfides, organon boronic acids, and dioxazolones is reported. These reactions deliver the 1,2-insertion and 2,1-insertion arylamidation products, respectively, for allylic sulfides and homoallylic sulfides. The enantioselective arylamidation of terminal and internal allylic sulfides is achieved, furnishing various 1,3- N,S compounds featuring one or two contiguous stereocenters in high yields and with high diastereo- and enantioselectivities. Mechanistic studies suggest a change in the turnover-limiting and selectivity-determining steps induced by the native and easily removable sulfide group.

Water-induced electricity harvesting has gained much significance for energy sustainability. Bio-based hydrovoltaic materials increase the attractiveness of this strategy. Although promising, it faces a challenge due to its reliance on fresh water and its inherently low power output. Herein, the energy from alkalinity-gradient power generation demonstrated the feasibility of reuse of alkaline wastewater to develop an all-wood-based water-induced electric generator (WEG) based on ion concentration gradients. The intermittent water droplets bring about uneven distribution of electrolyte and endow delignified wood with the difference of ion concentration along aligned cellulose nanochannels, thus supplying electrical power. The practice of using alkali reservoirs, including industrial wastewater, further contributes to electricity generation. The cubic WEG with a side length of 2 cm can produce an ultrahigh open-circuit voltage of about 1.1 V and a short-circuit current of up to 320 μA. A power output of 6.75 μW cm -2 is correspondingly realized. Series-connected WEGs can be used as an energy source for commercial electronics and self-powered systems. Our design provides a double value proposition, allowing for sustainable energy generation and wastewater reuse.

This study conducted a detailed evaluation of the feasibility of producing cellulose microfibrils (CMF) from a kraft-bleached hardwood pulp at high solid contents with and without pretreatments. CMFs produced by planetary ball milling at solid contents 17 and 28% were compared with those from 1 to 5% under the same milling conditions. Fiber pretreatments using a commercial endoglucanase and mechanical refining using a laboratory PFI mill were also applied before ball milling at a solid content of 28%. Two mechanisms of fiber fibrillation were identified from the results obtained: (i) ball and fiber/fibril interactions─the primary mechanism and (ii) interfiber/fibril frictional and tensional interactions─the secondary mechanism. The secondary mechanism plays an important role only in early-stage fibrillation and became less important as fibrillation proceeded in the later stage toward nanofibrillation. Improving fiber dispersion at lower solid content facilitated fibrillation. Endoglucanase pretreatment substantially shortened fibers to result in a "pulverized-like" CMF with short fibrils at an extended milling time. Mechanical refining of fibers facilitated fibrillation to result in CMFs with a morphology similar to that from runs without any fiber pretreatment but for a much shorter milling time. Both CMF water retention value (WRV) measurements and CMF suspension sedimentation experiments showed results consistent with imaging observations. The insights gained through this study provide relevant information with commercial significance regarding CMF production at high solids, which is not currently available in the literature.

Growing concern regarding the impact of fossil fuels has led to demands for the development of green and renewable materials for advanced electrochemical energy storage devices. Biopolymers with unique hierarchical structures and physicochemical properties, serving as an appealing platform for the advancement of sustainable energy, have found widespread application in the gel electrolytes of supercapacitors. In this Review, we outline the structure and characteristics of various biopolymers, discuss the proposed mechanisms and assess the evaluation metrics of gel electrolytes in supercapacitor devices, and further analyze the roles of biopolymer materials in this context. The state-of-the-art electrochemical performance of biopolymer-based hydrogel electrolytes for supercapacitors and their multiple functionalities are summarized, while underscoring the current technical challenges and potential solutions. The paper industry has long been a crucial part of our lives, providing printing materials, tissue paper, and packaging products. However, the low wet strength of commercially available paper limits its application in packaging, particularly when it comes into contact with liquids. To address this issue, researchers have explored various strategies, including the use of wet strength agents. The most widely used agent, polyamide-epichlorohydrin resin (PAE), has limitations, such as poor dimensional stability and limited recyclability. Additionally, PAE can release harmful chlorinated organics. To overcome these challenges, we report a novel approach using a hyperbranched wet strength agent (referred to as "OA-PI") based on the cross-linking of oxidized amylopectin from waxy corn and polyamines through the Schiff base reaction. The hyperbranched structure of OA-PI provides multiple binding sites, enhancing the cross-linking strength of cellulosic paper under wet conditions. The paper treated with OA-PI exhibited exceptional wet strength, significantly higher than that of PAE-treated paper and paper with traditional starch-based additives. Moreover, the biomass-based OA-PI showed improved recyclability and reduced harm from chlorinated organic compounds. This study not only enhances the wet strength of paper but also opens sustainable avenues for the design of functional adhesives.

Endowing paper with highly flexible, conductive, and superhydrophobic properties will effectively expand its applications in fields such as green packaging, smart sensing, and paper-based electronics. Herein, a multifunctional superhydrophobic paper is reported in which a highly flexible transparent conductive substrate is prepared by introducing a hydrophobic deep eutectic polymer into the ethylcellulose network via a matrix swelling-polymerization strategy, and then the substrate is modified using fluorinated silica to impart superhydrophobicity. By introducing soft deep eutectic polymers, (1) the superhydrophobic paper can efficiently dissipate energy during deformation, (2) intrinsically ion-conducting deep eutectic polymers can endow the material with good electrical sensing properties, and (3) meanwhile, enhanced interfacial interactions can anchor inorganic particles, thereby improving the coating stability. The prepared superhydrophobic paper has an ultrahigh water contact angle (contact angle ≈ 162.2°) and exhibits a stable electrical response signal to external deformation/pressure, and the electrical properties are almost unaffected by external water molecules. In addition, the superhydrophobic paper was able to withstand 5000 bending-recovery cycles at a large angle of 150°, exhibiting stable electrical performance. The design concepts demonstrated here will provide insights into the development of superhydrophobic paper-based flexible electronic devices.

Graphene is a two-dimensional honeycomb-like nanomaterial generated by carbon atoms in sp 2 hybridized orbitals to form a hexagonal lattice structure with excellent electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. The solution process method has been widely used to realize large-area patterned graphene structures for high-performance devices. In the method, graphene usually needs to be dispersed in solution, and the π-π bonding gravitational interactions between graphene sheets would lead to uncontrollable structures in solution and difficulty in obtaining high performance. In this work, a patterned graphene oxide (GO) structure with controllable thickness and layer spacing was realized by a direct-write printed slippery surface, which was used as a slippery limited template. After reducing GO into reduced graphene oxide (rGO), a flexible electric pattern with a conductivity of up to 6.425 × 10 3 S/m was realized. Furthermore, the patterned rGO structure was transferred on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), which could generate less than a 5% change in resistance after 10,000 consecutive bends, and an anisotropic expansion based on rGO and PDMS materials under electro-thermal coupling. The patterned rGO structures could meet the performance requirements of highly sensitive and complex deformation applications as flexible electric actuators. This study provides great research significance and application value for patterning high-quality graphene structures and realizing high-performance flexible electronic devices.

A novel yeast-mediated hydrogenation was developed for the synthesis of neohesperidin dihydrochalcone (NHDC) in high yields (over 83%). Moreover, whole-cell catalytic hydrolysis was also designed to hydrolyze NHDC into potential sweeteners, hesperetin dihydrochalcone-7- O -glucoside (HDC-G) and hesperetin dihydrochalcone (HDC). The biohydrogenation was further combined with whole-cell hydrolysis to achieve a one-pot two-step biosynthesis, utilizing yeast to hydrogenate C═C in the structure, while Aspergillus niger cells hydrolyze glycosides. The conversion of NHDC and the proportion of hydrolysis products could be controlled by adjusting the catalysts, the components of the reaction system, and the addition of glucose. Furthermore, yeast-mediated biotransformation demonstrated superior reaction stability and enhanced safety and employed more cost-effective catalysts compared to the traditional chemical hydrogenation of NHDC synthesis. This research not only provides a new route for NHDC production but also offers a safe and flexible one-pot cascade biosynthetic platform for the production of high-value compounds from citrus processing wastes.

Hydrogels are increasingly used in flexible electronic devices, but the mechanical and electrochemical stabilities of hydrogel devices are often limited under specific harsh conditions. Herein, chemically/physically cross-linked double-network (DN) hydrogels containing binary cations Zn 2+ and Li + are constructed in order to address the above challenges. Double networks of chemically cross-linked polyacrylamide (PAM) and physically cross-linked κ-Carrageenan (κ-CG) are designed to account for the mechanical robustness while binary cations endow the hydrogels with excellent ionic conductivity and outstanding environmental adaptability. Excellent mechanical robustness and ionic conductivity (25 °C, 2.26 S·m -1 ; -25 °C, 1.54 S·m -1 ) have been achieved. Utilizing the DN hydrogels containing binary cations as signal-converting materials, we fabricated flexible mechanosensors. High gauge factors (resistive strain sensors, 2.4; capacitive pressure sensors, 0.82 kPa -1 ) and highly stable sensing ability have been achieved. Interestingly, zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors containing the DN hydrogels containing binary cations as electrolytes have achieved an initial capacity of 52.5 mAh·g -1 at a current density of 3 A·g -1 and a capacity retention rate of 82.9% after 19,000 cycles. Proper working of the zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors at subzero conditions and stable charge-discharge for more than 19,000 cycles at -25 °C have been demonstrated. Overall, DN hydrogels containing binary cations have provided promising materials for high-performance flexible electronic devices under harsh conditions.

This paper evaluates the potential of diamond-like carbon (DLC) as a durable surface protection to replace the chromium (Cr) layer, which is traditionally applied to gravure print cylinders and other components through a galvanic electroplating process. The fabrication of DLC is more eco-friendly and could reduce the environmental hazard posed by hexavalent chromium in liquid form that is used in Cr application and better adhere to environmental regulations. This could encourage businesses to bring the DLC fabrication process in-house, sharing resources such as materials, labor, and equipment, to help reduce costs. Four DLC variants (standard DLC, A-DLC, S-DLC, and organic silica) and chrome were analyzed and tested for their surface properties and durability. Data suggest that both standard DLC and S-DLC had higher surface free energy, allowing for good ink wetting on the surface when compared to chrome. In addition, the standard DLC and S-DLC surfaces are generally smoother than the chrome, resulting in lower relative hydrophilicity and allowing for easier removal of ink in the nonimage regions with the doctor blade. The elcometer adhesion test demonstrated that the bond strength of the DLC variants to their base layer was comparable to the bond strength of chrome, indicating that the adhesion strength of the two materials was similar. Furthermore, in the abrasion test, the wear on the standard DLC surface and the corresponding wear on the lamella tip of the metal doctor blades were notably lower than that observed on chrome. This distinction is particularly evident in each of the test trials, specifically run 1, which involved 2,000,000 wiping actions of a metal doctor blade in the presence of abrasive TiO 2 ink pigments. Statistical analysis on standard DLC versus chrome suggests that DLC fabrication is effective and durable on plain and patterned surfaces. Therefore, from a sustainable and eco-friendly perspective, standard DLC and S-DLC would be good alternative durable surfaces for print cylinders and other components used in various industries due to superior wear resistance properties.

The recently developed advanced electrolytes possess many crucial qualities, including robust stability, Li dendrite-free, and comparable interface compatibility, for the manufacturing of Li metal batteries with a high energy density. In this study, lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide, acrylamide, and succinonitrile were first used to design a polymerizable monomer. Then, it went through in situ thermal polymerization to attain a new solid polymer electrolyte [named poly(PDES)]. The synthesized poly(PDES) electrolyte achieved higher ionic conductivity (∼1.89 × 10 -3 S cm -1 ), oxidation potential (∼5.10 V versus Li + /Li), and a larger lithium-ion transfer number (∼0.63). Moreover, poly(PDES) was nonflammable and could effectively inhibit the formation of Li dendrites. As a result, the assembled batteries using the poly(PDES) electrolyte for both Li||LiFePO 4 and Li||LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 exhibited excellent interface compatibility and electrochemical performances. This poly(PDES) electrolyte has promising potential for broad application in lithium-metal batteries with elevated energy density and safety performance in the near future.

The flame-retardant paper has gradually evolved into a necessary material in various industries as a result of the rising importance of fire safety, energy efficiency, and environmental preservation. Traditional cellulose paper requires the addition of a large amount of flame retardants to achieve flame retardancy, which poses a serious threat to mechanical quality and the environment. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop inorganic fiber flame-retardant paper with good flexibility, high thermal stability, and inherent flame retardancy. Herein, inspired by the "brick-and-mortar" layered structure of nature nacre, we developed a layered composite paper with a unique alternating arrangement of organic-inorganic fibers by synergistically integrating environmentally sustainable basalt fiber (BF) and high-performance aramid nanofibers (ANFs) through a vacuum-assisted filtration process. The as-prepared ANFs/BF composite paper exhibited low thermal conductivity (0.024 W m -1 K -1 ), high tensile strength (54.22 MPa), and excellent flexibility. Thanks to its excellent thermal stability, the mechanical strength remains at a high level (92%) after heat treatment at 300 °C for 60 min. Furthermore, the peak heat release rate and smoke generation of ANFs/BF composite paper decreased by 44.6 and 95.3%, respectively. Therefore, the composite paper is promising for applications as a protective layer in flexible electronic devices, cables, and fire-retardant and high-temperature fields.

Droplet directional transport is one of the central topics in microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip applications. Selective transport of diverse droplets, particularly in another liquid phase environment with controlled directions, is still challenging. In this work, we propose an electric-field gradient-driven droplet directional transport platform facilitated by a robust lubricant surface. On the platform, we clearly demonstrated a liquid-inherent critical frequency-dominated selective transport of diverse droplets and a driving mechanism transition from electrowetting to liquid dielectrophoresis. Enlightened by the Kelvin-Helmholtz theory, we first realize the directional droplet transport in another liquid phase whenever a permittivity difference exists. Co-transport of multiple droplets and various combinations of droplet types, as well as multifunctional droplet transport modes, are realized based on the presented powerful electric-field gradient-driven platform, overcoming the limitations of the surrounding environment, liquid conductivity, and intrinsic solid-liquid wetting property existing in traditional droplet transport strategies. This work may inspire new applications in liquid separation, multiphase microfluidic manipulation, chemical reagent selection, and so on.

Valorization of the lignocellulosic side and waste streams is key to making industrial processes more efficient from both an economic and ecological perspective. Currently, the production of sugars from beets results in pulps in large quantities. However, there is a lack of promising opportunities for upcycling these materials despite their promising properties. Here, we investigate beet pulps from two different stages of the sugar manufacturing process as raw materials for supercapacitor electrodes. We demonstrate that these materials can be efficiently converted to activated, highly porous carbons. The carbons exhibit pore dimensions approaching the size of the desolvated K + and SO 4 2- ions with surface areas up to 2600 m 2 g -1 . These carbons were subsequently manufactured into electrodes, assembled in supercapacitors, and tested with environmentally friendly aqueous electrolytes (6 M KOH and 1 M H 2 SO 4 ). Further analysis demonstrated the presence of capacitance-enhancing functionalities, and up to 193 and 177 F g -1 in H 2 SO 4 and KOH, respectively, were achieved, which outperformed supercapacitors prepared from commercial YP80 F. Achieving time-dependent phosphorescence color (TDPC) in organic materials is attractive but extremely challenging due to the nonradiative decay and modulation puzzle of triplet state. Herein, xylan, a hemicellulose waste from the paper mill, was used to construct carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) with clusterization-triggered room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). CPDs were endowed with tuneable triplet energy levels by through-space conjugation of heteroatom groups, which could be confined in silica to simultaneously activate surface oxide-related low-energy and cross-linked core N-related high-energy emissive centers. Thus, the blue emissive center with a lifetime of 425.6 ms and green emissive center with a longer lifetime of 1506 ms coexisted in the confined CPDs; the former was the dominant contribution to RTP at first, and the latter became dominant over time, leading to a typical TDPC evolution with large color contrast from blue to blue-green and then to green. Meanwhile, the TDPC could remain unobstructed after the confined CPDs were soaked in water for more than a month. The CPDs were successfully applied in location and deformation imaging of hydrogel and advanced dynamic information encryption and anticounterfeiting. The work may shed new light on the design of TDPC materials and broaden the high-value use of paper-mill waste xylan.

Nanoscale composite lignin colloids were prepared on a large scale with a process of assembly-mediated internal cross-linking in a good solvent, thus possessing absolutely nanoscale dimensions, excellent robustness, and less aggregation. The therefore prime UV resistance and various natural visible colors contribute to the preservation and beautification of skin.
