The subsistence strategies of early farming communities have been highlighted since the beginning of the Neolithic, thanks to numerous studies on lipid residues from ceramic vessels conducted in various parts of continental Europe. However, after the Early Neolithic, evidence of subsistence strategies along the northern Atlantic coast are still lacking, especially for island contexts. This paper presents the results of lipid residue analysis of 129 potsherds from Beg ar Loued (Molène, France), an island site dating primarily to the Early Bronze Age (c. 2700-2600 to 1800 BCE). Aiming to understand the use of vessels, vessel treatment and culinary practices on the settlement, analyses of visible charred residues, sherds and ceramic surfaces/coating layers were carried out using chromatographic (n = 174) and isotopic techniques (n = 24) after lipid extraction by solvent (n = 174) or acid methanolysis (n = 31). The results demonstrate the extensive use of terrestrial products (ruminant carcass and dairy) in pottery, including occasional plant products (with possible mixtures of different waxes), while the detection of aquatic products is limited. Thus, combined with evidence from faunal remains at the site, the results indicate that terrestrial resources like ruminant meat and dairy products were preferentially processed in vessels, and aquatic products mostly without the use of ceramics. The SISFRANCE database aims to collect and interpret archives relating the historical seismicity in metropolitan France. The database presently contains some 12,500 documents that allow to define 108,832 macroseismic data points, for a total of 6427 events, of which 5743 can be qualified as real earthquakes. Although half of these events are and will probably remain poorly known, completing our knowledge of historical earthquakes remains a fundamental element for the definition of seismic hazard and the understanding of seismicity in France and low to moderate seismicity regions in general. The first aim of this paper is to explain the state of the art of the database and remind end users how the limits introduced by the necessary interpretation of archival data are translated into quality factors that should be carefully considered when using such data for seismotectonic and seismic hazard purposes. Originally built as part of the necessary datasets to define the seismic hazard for nuclear facilities, the SISFRANCE database is the result of 40 years of work within a consortium bringing together the French civil nuclear operator (EDF), the French geological survey (BRGM), and the French institute of nuclear safety (IRSN). SISFRANCE is also the heir to archival research carried out since the second half of the 19th century, thus constituting the richest collection of data related to historical seismicity in France. The second aim of this paper is to explain to end users the current state of archival research within the SISFRANCE consortium, present avenues for future research strategies, and list potential improvements of the database structure. Archival research within the SISFRANCE consortium, no longer carried out by a dedicated historian since 2018, is presently being pursued by engaging individual researchers or academics, focusing research on specific archives and regions, as well as by developing data-mining techniques to exploit the increasing wealth of accessible numerical archives. Given the new impetus of French governmental research agencies that encourage transdisciplinarity research, SISFRANCE is also pursuing the idea of further engaging the academic community of historians and seismologists, presently greatly underrepresented in the field of historical seismicity in spite of the importance of this data, fundamental for any seismotectonic and seismic hazard study in France. Mainland France is part of a plate interior with a strong structural heritage, undergoing a low rate of deformation, where destructive earthquakes can nevertheless occur. In this paper, we emphasize that the knowledge of active faults is still largely fragmentary, and that significant efforts are needed to generate robust data, in particular on the numerous faults, that still lack any study. This is the aim of the “Failles ACTives France” (FACT) axis launched in the framework of the Transverse Seismicity Action (ATS) of the Resif-Epos consortium. We present some recent investigations carried out along suspected active faults in mountainous areas, their forelands and remote lowlands, which implement new approaches and new tools, and allow characterizing their Quaternary activity. Seismic monitoring of southwestern France began in the 1960s, and homogeneous coverage by observation networks has been in place since the 1990s. The accumulation of data now allows a refined understanding of regional seismicity, not only on its spatial aspects, but also on the regularity of the earthquake distribution over time. This paper is both a review of the work carried out on the subject, and a progress report on the current knowledge of the regional seismicity in its seismotectonic context. With the support of maps, the available catalogs are exploited at different nested scales, from the region as a whole to the numerous clusters that characterize the seismicity of southwestern France, and more specifically that of the Pyrenees. An exhaustive study of these Pyrenean clusters and their temporal behavior is proposed, allowing in particular a better description of the prominent seismicity stripe to the northwest of the range. The stratigraphical complex preserved at the site of Menez–Dregan I (Brittany, France) displays an alternating sequence of 17 occupation levels and of 4 marine deposits, between ca. 450 and 150,000 years (stratigraphical units 9a and 3b). The lithic industry retrieved at the site is extremely abundant, with more than 153,000 artefacts over 3 cm in length, as well as millions of knapping debris, and corresponds to a regional facies of the Acheulean, with heavy-duty tools essentially represented by choppers, as well as a few handaxes and cleavers. This paper presents a first synthesis of the data produced for almost 30 years on the site of Menez–Dregan I. The typological study of the entire lithic collection is now complete and allows us to assess the different human occupations that occurred at this site during the Lower Palaeolithic. This paper draws on sociology, geography and law to analyse the exposure of populations to coastal multihazards in a postcolonial and overseas context. The research is based on a case study conducted in two municipalities in Guadeloupe (French Antilles): Deshaies and Capesterre-Belle-Eau. The corpus of data consists of 52 interviews conducted with inhabitants and institutional actors, as well as a set of spatialized data and a regulatory corpus. The analysis underscores how public policies must contend with a complex territorial reality that is still bound to the postcolonial past and legacy of slavery in Guadeloupe. The potential contradictions between regularization policies, hazard prevention policies and policies to curb insalubrious housing tend to expose the most fragile populations to what we refer to here as legal vulnerability. Buildings are the largest contributors to households' energy footprints. If both the energy for household mobility and the embodied energy are added to the energy for heating/cooling, domestic hot water, lighting, buildings are by far the main problem of energy consumption in France. This paper presents a review of the evolution of the main drivers of CO 2 emissions by buildings in France. Eventually, the paradox of the effect of density is discussed. Lower density of cities increases the energy spent per inhabitant, in particular for transport, but may also increase the production of low-carbon renewable energies, shifting the global energy balance and influencing the prospective studies of future, energy efficient, smart cities. Quaternary small vertebrate assemblages from northern France, and more generally from northwestern Europe, are poorly recognized, and studied less than those from more southern, Mediterranean areas. However, important sites of human occupation are often found in these northern areas, with significant issues related to the occupation of these sites by Neanderthals and previous humans, as well as faunal dynamics under climatic pressure. In this paper, we present preliminary results from the study of small vertebrate assemblages from two Late Pleistocene sites of northern France: Mutzig (Alsace) and Le Rozel (Normandy). Both are ancient rock-shelters that have been excavated recently and have yielded evidence of Neanderthal occupation, but in very different contexts: Le Rozel is located in a coastal area of northwestern France contemporaneous with a temperate period, while Mutzig is located at the foot of the Vosges mountains in northeastern France and was occupied during a cold period. Consequently, even if these two sites are chronologically close to each other, differences in faunal composition are observed and discussed in relation to the geographic, climatic and biochronological context, in comparing the results from small vertebrates with those from other disciplines (numerical dating, large mammals).
