For terrestrial farm animals, intact protein sources like soybean meal have been the main ingredients providing the required amino acids (AA) to sustain life. However, in recent years, the availability of hydrolysed protein sources and free AA has led to the use of other forms of AA to feed farm animals. The advent of using these new forms is especially important to reduce the negative environmental impacts of animal production because these new forms allow reducing the dietary crude protein content and provide more digestible materials. However, the form in which dietary AA are provided can have an effect on the dynamics of nutrient availability for protein deposition and tissue growth including the efficiency of nutrient utilization. In this literature review, the use of different forms of AA in animal diets is explored, and their differences in digestion and absorption rates are focused on. These differences affect the postprandial plasma appearance of AA, which can have metabolic consequences, like greater insulin response when free AA or hydrolysates instead of intact proteins are fed, which can have a profound effect on metabolism and growth performance. Nevertheless, the use and application of the different AA forms in animal diets are important to achieve a more sustainable and efficient animal production system in the future, as they allow for a more precise diet formulation and reduced negative environmental impact. The objective of the study was to estimate Leu requirement for weaned piglets to balance indispensable AA in reduced CP diets. A dose-response experiment was conducted to estimate the standardized ileal digestible (SID) Leu to Lys ratio required for the maximum growth of young pigs after weaning. In this study, 96 female pigs (initial BW of 8 kg) were allotted to 1 of 6 dietary treatments with 16 individually penned pigs per treatment. Graded levels of crystalline l-Leu were added to a basal diet to provide diets containing 0.70, 0.80, 0.90, 1.00, 1.10, and 1.20 SID Leu:Lys. Lysine was limiting and fulfilled 90% of the current recommendations. The ADFI, ADG, and G:F were determined during a 2 wk experimental period. Blood and urine samples were taken at the end of each wk. The ADFI increased linearly (P < 0.001) from 0.70 to 0.80 SID Leu:Lys and then remained constant from 0.90 to 1.20 SID Leu:Lys. The ADG showed a quadratic increase (P = 0.02), as the SID Leu:Lys level increased from 0.70 to 0.90 SID Leu:Lys and did not change further from 0.90 to 1.20 SID Leu:Lys. The G:F increased quadratically (P < 0.001) with increasing SID Leu:Lys level, and the greatest G:F was achieved with pigs receiving the diet with 0.80 SID Leu:Lys. Increasing the dietary SID Leu:Lys resulted in a linear increase in plasma Leu concentration (P < 0.001) and quadratic increases (P < 0.001) in plasma Cys concentration. The plasma concentration of most of the other AA was lowest in pigs receiving the diets with 0.90 to 1.00 SID Leu:Lys. The plasma urea nitrogen concentration tended (P = 0.08) to be lowest in pigs receiving 1.00 SID Leu:Lys, suggesting a more balanced AA profile at this level. Research on AA requirements and their profile is still running and the recommendations are being updated frequently. The dietary crude protein level could be reduced with no marked detrimental effects on animal performance as far as the supply and the balance of indispensable AA meet the animal requirements. A dose-response experiment was conducted to estimate the standardized ileal digestible (SID) isoleucine (Ile) to lysine (Lys) ratio required for the best performance of animals when fed cereal-based diets without blood products. In this study, 96 pigs (initial BW 8 kg) were allotted to 1 of 6 dietary treatments with 16 pigs per treatment. Graded levels of crystalline Ile were added to the basal diet to produce diets providing 0.42, 0.46, 0.50, 0.58, and 0.62 SID Ile:Lys. Average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain (ADG), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were determined during a period of 14 days. Blood and urine samples were taken at the end of each week. There was a quadratic increase in ADFI (P<0.001) and ADG (P<0.007) by increasing level of Ile:Lys in the diet. The ADG tended to increase linearly (P<0.08) as well. The maximum ADFI and ADG were obtained in pigs fed the 0.50 SID Ile:Lys diet. The FCR showed neither linear nor quadratic response to increasing concentration of Ile:Lys in the diet, but numerically the 0.58 and 0.62 Ile:Lys resulted in the lowest FCR. Increasing the dietary SID Ile:Lys resulted in a linear increase in plasma Ile concentration (P<0.001) and a quadratic decrease in plasma leucine concentration (P<0.03). There was also a linear decrease in plasma glycine (P<0.001) and serine (P<0.004) concentrations when increasing dietary Ile:Lys. Neither plasma urea nor urinary urea were affected by feeding the SID Ile:Lys levels. The minimum SID Ile:Lys levels required to maximize ADFI and ADG were 0.51 and 0.52 SID Ile:Lys using a curvilinear plateau model and 0.53 and 0.53 SID Ile:Lys using a quadratic regression model. The estimated requirement using FCR as a response variable was 0.48 SID Ile:Lys by a broken-line model. Abstract: Variation is inherent to living systems. Because feeding strategies are applied to groups of pigs, it contributes to the inefficient use of natural resources and may even amplify the variation among pigs at slaughter. Precision pork production and precision feeding, through management of the variation among individuals, may contribute to improving the efficiency of animal production systems. This approach relies on the prediction of the response of the animal to the nutrient supply, the continuous monitoring of the response, and a system to control nutrient supply. Most nutritional models of pig growth are based on the partitioning of nutrients between energy expenditure, and protein and lipid deposition. However, the link between chemical body composition and tissue growth, tissue composition and thus carcass quality remains a challenge in modeling. The potential of precision pork production also depends on the (real-time) information that can be obtained to control growth and carcass quality. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A study was conducted to compare utilization of ME for growth vs. maintenance in rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon. Fish were hand-fed to satiation one of four isoenergetic diets (DE = 20 MJ/kg, asfed basis) with different digestible protein (DP) to DE ratios (24, 22, 20, and 18 g/MJ). Intake of ME (kJ/d), energy deposited as protein (PD, kJ/d), and energy deposited as lipid (LD, kJ/d) were determined by a comparative slaughter technique. Data were analyzed by a factorial approach or by multivariate analysis of PD and LD on ME. Maintenance energy requirements (MEm) and efficiency of ME utilization for PD (kp) and LD (kf) were estimated with both approaches. For the multivariate analysis, an additional parameter, the fraction of ME intake above maintenance used for PD (X) was defined as linear function of BW, with slope (d) and intercept (c) estimated simultaneously with the above parameters. Estimates were highly dependent on the approach and assumptions used. The MEm and kp, values were higher and less accurate with the factorial approach than with multivariate analysis. The factorial approach estimated unrealistic kf values (kf >1). With the multivariate analysis, MErn did not differ between species (20 kJ&·d-1·kg-0.8). On the other hand, kp was significantly higher (e.g., 0.52 ± 0.06 vs. 0.43 ± 0.06; P < 0.05) for salmon than for trout and independent of diet, but kf was 0.81 (±0.13) regardless of species or diet. The ME intake above MEm used for PD (c) was higher in salmon than trout (57 vs. 55%; P < 0.05). The change in partitioning of ME for PD due to the change in BW was negative for trout (d = -0.18), but positive for salmon (d = 0.16). The d values agreed well with the increase of LD:PD ratio with BW for trout and the decrease of LD:PD with BW for salmon, which may have been related to the maturation status of this fish and the associated loss of body lipid observed by maturing salmon. Variability in bodyweight (BW) among pigs complicates the management of feeding strategies and slaughter. Including variability among individuals in modelling approaches can help to design feeding strategies to control performance level, but also its variability. The InraPorc model was used to perform simulations on 10 batches of 84 crossbred pigs each to characterise the effect of feeding strategies differing in amino acid supply or feed allowance on the mean and variation in growth rate. Results suggested that a feed restriction reduces the coefficient of variation of BW at first departure for slaughter (BW1) by 34%. Growth performance obtained from an in silico simulation using ad libitum and restricted feeding plans was compared with results obtained in an in vivo experiment on a batch of 168 pigs. Pigs were offered feed ad libitum or were restricted (increase in feed allowance by 27 g/day up to a maximum of 2.4 and 2.7 kg/day for gilts and barrows, respectively). A two-phase feeding strategy was applied, with 0.9 and 0.7 g of digestible lysine per MJ of net energy (NE) in diets provided before or after 65 kg BW, respectively. Actual growth was similar to that obtained by simulation. Coefficient of variation of BW1 was similar in vivo and in silico for the ad libitum feeding strategy but was underestimated by 1 percentage point in silico for the restriction strategy. This study confirms the relevance of using simulations performed to predict the level and variability in performance of group housed pigs. Variability of bodyweight among pigs complicates management decisions related to feeding and slaughter; growth models that account for variability can be used to test and to propose feeding strategies to control this variability. This study demonstrates this concept and confirms its applicability in an in vivo experiment. Decision support tools based on such a modelling approach can be developed to propose feeding strategies allowing reaching target levels of performance in many fields (growth rate, economy and environmental impact). In growing animals, requirements for many nutrients (and energy) are determined by the retention of these nutrients. During growth, this retention changes in an absolute way and also between nutrients and energy, resulting in changing nutrient requirements. The objective of this study was to describe the changes in chemical composition in male growing turkeys. The serial slaughter technique was used to determine the composition of amino acids, lipid, ash, and water in feather-free body (FFB) and feathers in male turkeys offered feed ad libitum from 1 to 15 wk of age. Allometric relations were used to describe changes in body composition. The feather content in the body decreased from 6% at 1 wk of age to less than 3% at 15 wk of age. The water and protein content in FFB decreased with increasing FFB mass, with allometric scalars (b) of, respectively, 0.967 and 0.970, whereas the lipid content increased with increasing FFB mass (b = 1.388). The water, protein, and ash content in fat-free FFB was constant and represented, respectively, 71.6, 24.2, and 4.2% of the fat-free FFB mass. The amino acid content of FFB protein was relatively constant and only the Cys content decreased between 1 and 15 wk of age, whereas the Tie content increased. Feathers were mostly composed of protein, and the protein content did not change during growth. During growth, the Lys, Met, Trp, His, Tyr, Asp, and Glu contents in feather protein decreased, whereas the Cys, Val, and Ser contents increased. The contribution of feathers to whole-body amino acid retention ranged from 5% for His to 33% for Cys. On average, the weight gain of FFB contained 21.3% protein and 12.7% lipid, corresponding to an energy content of 10.1 kJ/g. The weight gain of feathers contained 87.4% protein, corresponding to an energy content of 20.4 kJ/g. Little knowledge on the digestive and metabolic utilization of solid feed in veal calves is avail- able. The objectives of the study were to determine the effects of 2 solid feeds offered at 2 feeding levels (FL90 and FL105) in addition to a milk replacer on heat production (HP) and protein and fat deposition in veal calves. Sixteen calves (148.0 ± 3.7 kg) received milk replacer (75% of a reference DE allowance) and solid feeds that consisted of corn grain and pelleted hydrolyzed wheat gluten without (CO) or with (CS) chopped wheat straw. The solid feed supply provided 15 or 30% of the reference DE allowance to achieve FL90 or FL105, resulting in 4 treatments: CO90, CS90, C0105, and CS105. A fifth treatment consisted of using the milk replacer alone at FL90O (treatment M90) and was measured in 4 other calves. All calves were kept individually for 7 d in a respiration chamber to estimate energy and N balances and fasting HP. The digestibility coefficients of DM, OM, GE, and major nutrients were at least 94% for M90 and decreased when solid feed was added (P < 0.05). Methane production was negligible in M90 calves and increased when solid feed was given (ranging 8 to 23 L/d between CO90 and CS105, P < 0.01), indicative of ruminal fermentation. The provision of increasing amounts of solid feed decreased urinary energy in connection with a tendency (P = 0.09) for a reduction of urinary glucose excretion. The metabolizability of DE was greater with the milk replacer (95.6%) and decreased when straw was added (P < 0.01). Neither CO90 or CS90 affected HP and total energy retention (P> 0.05). Dietary treatment had no effect (P> 0.05) on activity HP (53 kJ/kg of BW0.85 daily) but did affect thermic effect of feeding; efficiency of utilizing ME for maintenance and growth was greatest for the M90 calves (84.5%, P = 0.02). Fasting HP tended (P = 0.09) to increase at the greatest FL (308 vs. 298 kJ/kg of BW0.85 daily). Maintenance ME requirement increased (P = 0.04) from 364 to 382 kJ/ kg of BW0.85 daily when feeding level increased (P = 0.04) but was not affected by ingestion of solid feed. The provision of solid feed to veal calves was associated with a reduced efficiency of N retention (P = 0.04), and energy retained as protein tended to decrease (P = 0.08), probably as a result of an imbalanced AA supply of the solid feeds. Research on veal calf production has focused on maximizing lean tissue growth. Nevertheless, limited attention has been paid to the evolution of digestive and metabolic utilization of N and energy as calves get older, whereas age at slaughter increases. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of 4 concentrations of dietary crude protein (CP) content on protein and fat deposition and energy utilization in milk-fed calves at 3 stages of fattening using the balance technique combined with heat production measurements in a respiration chamber. At each stage, 16 Prim'Holstein male calves (mean body weight at each stage: 72, 136, and 212 kg) received 4 isocaloric diets with CP contents of 76, 88, 100, and 112% of a reference CP content fixed at 20% during the first stage and 19% during the 2 later stages. After 2 wk of adaptation to their respective diets and housing conditions, the calves were placed for 1 wk in an open-circuit respiration chamber for N and energy balance measurements (first 6 d) and measurement of the fasting heat production (last day). Measurements for a stage were performed over 2 periods of 4 successive weeks. There was no effect of dietary CP on digestibility during the 2 later stages, but the low-protein diet resulted in lower digestibility coefficients for dry matter, organic matter, gross energy, CP, and crude fat during the first stage. Endogenous fecal N was estimated as 2.5 g/kg of dry matter intake irrespective of stage, and metabolic urinary N was estimated at 0.07 g/kg of body weight0.85 per day. Maximum N retention was 32.8, 40.5, and 44.0 g/d at stages 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The effect of protein intake on protein deposition was dependent on age of the calves, because the marginal efficiency of digestible protein utilization decreased from 64 to 18% as animals got older. Fat deposition decreased with increasing dietary CP content irrespective of stage. Total energy retention was not modified by dietary CP content. The composition of body weight gain was affected differently for each stage, because the protein content of body weight gain increased with increasing dietary CP content during the first stage, whereas it remained constant during the other 2 stages. Fat and energy content in body weight gain decreased with increasing dietary CP irrespective of stage. Traditional AA dose-response studies utilize many animals for evaluation of growth performance, and it is hypothesized that a new experimental design based on modern analytical techniques can reduce the number of used animals. The objective was to evaluate a short-term approach with a low number of pigs based on plasma metabolites as a method to determine the dietary Ile, Leu, and Val requirements. Three separate 6 × 6 Latin square experiments having 6 replicates per treatment were conducted with 6 diets containing increasing concentrations of Ile, Leu, and Val which were fed to 6 pigs (BW 8–9 kg) for 2 days, each without a wash-out period for a period of 12 days. The diets were prepared and used in 3 previous traditional-design dose-response studies and had been stored at −20 °C. Blood samples were collected at the end of each 2-day period, and plasma was analyzed for AA and other metabolites using a metabolomics approach. Out of the 18 analyzed plasma AA, 11, 16, and 3 AA for Ile, Leu, or Val, respectively, showed linear or quadratic responses ( P < 0.05) which could be linked to animal growth. The same was found for 4 non-AA metabolites in the Ile, and for 7 non-AA metabolites in the Leu study. 3-Methyl-2-oxovaleric acid, ketohexanoic acid, and α-ketoisovaleric acid were discriminating metabolites for both Ile and Leu. It was possible to fit least squares means of 5, 14, and 2 metabolites in the Ile, Leu, and Val experiments to curvilinear-plateau, broken-line, or quadratic models and thereby estimate an optimum dietary BCAA level. The average optimum BCAA levels across metabolites and models were 0.54 standardized ileal digestible (SID) Ile:Lys, 1.04 SID Leu:Lys, and 0.68 SID Val:Lys which were close to optimums of 0.52, 0.93, and 0.70 found in the previous dose-response studies based on animal growth performance. In conclusion, certain plasma metabolites could be used to estimate Ile, Leu, and Val requirements, and 2 days of adaptation to a new diet was sufficient to reflect relevant biological changes in the blood to different levels of dietary AA in the current study. The use and partition of feed energy are key elements in productive efficiency of pigs. This study aimed to determine whether dietary energy sources affect the partition of body lipids and tissue biochemical pathways of energy use between pigs differing in feed efficiency. Forty-eight barrows (pure Large White) from two divergent lines selected for residual feed intake (RFI), a measure of feed efficiency, were compared. From 74 d to 132 ± 0.5 d of age, pigs (n = 12 by line and by diet) were offered diets with equal protein and ME contents. A low fat, low fiber diet (LF) based on cereals and a high fat, high fiber diet (HF) where vegetal oils and wheat straw were used to partially substitute cereals, were compared. Irrespective of diet, gain to feed was 10% better (P < 0.001), and carcass yield was greater (+2.3%; P < 0.001) in the low RFI compared with the high RFI line; the most-efficient line was also leaner (+3.2% for loin proportion in the carcass, P < 0.001). In both lines, ADFI and ADG were lower when pigs were fed the HF diet (-12.3% and -15%, respectively, relatively to LF diet; P < 0.001). Feeding the HF diet reduced the perirenal fat weight and backfat proportion in the carcass to the same extent in both lines (-27% on average; P < 0.05). Lipid contents in backfat and LM also declined (-5% and -19%, respectively; P < 0.05) in pigs offered the HF diet. The proportion of saturated fatty acids (FA) was lower, but the percentage of PUFA, especially the EFA C18:2 and Cl 8:3, was greater (P < 0.001) in backfat of HF-fed pigs. In both lines, these changes were associated with a marked decrease (P < 0.001) in the activities of two lipogenic enzymes, the fatty acid synthase (FASN) and the malic enzyme, in backfat. For the high RFI line, the hepatic lipid content was greater (P < 0.05) in pigs fed the HF diet than in pigs fed the LF diet, despite a reduced FASN activity (-32%; P < 0.001). In both lines, the HF diet also led to lower glycogen content (-70%) and lower glucokinase activity (-15%; P < 0.05) in the liver. These results show that dietary energy sources modified the partition of energy between liver, adipose tissue, and muscle in a way that was partly dependent of the genetics for feed efficiency, and changed the activity levels of biochemical pathways involved in lipid and glucose storage in tissues. Ingested dietary nutrients and feed energy are partitioned among tissues to sustain body growth. Based on the respective costs of the various metabolic pathways allowing use and storage of feed energy into cells, it may be theorized that daily meal frequency could affect growth, body composition or feed efficiency. This study aimed to determine the effects of daily meal frequency on nutrient partitioning, tissue metabolism and composition, and performance. Young growing pigs (30 kg BW) were offered a same amount of feed either in 2 (M2, n = 15) or 12 (M12, n = 16) meals per day during a 3-wk interventional period. Animals fed twice a day had an accelerated weight gain (+6.4%, P < 0.05) and exhibited a greater G:F (+4%, P = 0.03) than animals fed 12 meals per day during this period. Basal plasma concentrations of glucose, lactate, triglyceride, urea, and leptin were lower (P < 0.001) in M2 pigs than in Ml2 pigs. Meal frequency also changed (P < 0.001) the time-course profiles of plasma concentrations of glucose, insulin, and lactate in response to meal ingestion. A greater rise and a sharper fall in plasma glucose and insulin levels were observed in M2 pigs compared with Ml2 pigs. In both groups, similarities were observed in the postprandial time courses of plasma concentrations of insulin and of a-amino nitrogen (used as a measure of total AA). Despite these metabolic responses, tissue lipids, glycogen content, and enzyme activities participating in energy metabolism in muscle and liver were similar (P > 0.10) in both groups at the end of the trial. Percentage of perirenal fat in the body and depth of dorsal subcutaneous fat tissue were not affected by meal frequency, but kidney weight was lower (-18%, P < 0.001) in M2 pigs than in M12 pigs. Residual feed intake (RFI) is defined as the difference between the observed ADFI and the ADFI predicted from production and maintenance requirements. The objectives of this study were to evaluate RFI as a selection criterion to improve feed efficiency and its potential to reduce N and P excretion in 4 pig breeds. Data were collected between 2000 and 2009 in French central test stations for 2 dam breeds [French Landrace (LR) and Large White (LWD)], and 2 sire breeds [Large White (LWS) and Piétrain (PP)]. Numbers of recorded pigs were 6407, 10,694, 2342, and 2448 for the LR, LWD, LWS, and PP breeds, respectively. All PP animals were genotyped for the halothane mutation. This data set was used to calculate RFI equations for each of the 4 breeds, and to estimate genetic parameters for RFI together with growth, carcass, and meat quality traits, and N and P excretion during the test period (35 to 110 kg BW). The RFI explained 20.1% in PP, 26.5% in LWS, 27.6% in LWD, and 29.5% in LR of the phenotypic variability of ADFI. The PP breed differed from the others in this respect, probably due to a lower impact of the variation of body composition on ADFI. Heritability estimates of RFI ranged from 0.21 ± 0.03 (LWD) to 0.33 ± 0.06 (PP) depending on the breed. Heritabilities of N and P excretion traits ranged from 0.29 ± 0.06 to 0.40 ± 0.06. The RFI showed positive genetic correlations with feed conversion ratio (FCR) and excretion traits, these correlations being greater in the sire breeds (from 0.57 to 0.86) than in the dam breeds (from 0.38 to 0.53). Compared with FCR, RFI had weaker genetic correlations with carcass composition, growth rate, and excretion traits. Estimates of genetic correlations between FCR and excretion traits were very close to 1 for all breeds. Finally, excretion traits were, at the genetic level, correlated positively with ADFI, negatively with growth rate and carcass leanness, whereas the halothane n mutation in PP was shown to reduce N and P excretion levels. To conclude, new selection indexes including RFI can be envisaged to efficiently disentangle the responses to selection on growth rate and body composition from those on feed efficiency, with favorable impacts on N and P excretions, particularly in sire pig breeds. In the factorial approach, amino acid (AA) requirements are determined using the AA com-position of retained protein, which is assumed to be constant. However, this hypothesis may not be valid because the AA composition of body protein can be affected by the diet. The objective of this study was to quantify the changes in chemical body composition of broilers receiving diets either deficient (TSAA-) or suf-ficient (TSAA+) in TSAA. Diet TSAA+ was formulat-ed according to the Ross recommendation. Diet TSAA provided 36% true digestible Met:Lys and 64% true digestible TSAA:Lys, which were, respectively, 34 and 22% lower compared with diet TSAA+. Performance and tissue weight gain between 7 and 42 d of age were not affected by the TSAA supply. In TSAA- chickens, protein gain was lower in the carcass (P < 0.01) and tended to be lower in the empty body (P = 0.06) and pectoralis major muscle (P = 0.10). Compared with TSAA+ chickens, lipid gain in TSAA- chickens was 78% greater in the pectoralis muscle (P < 0.001), 28% greater in abdominal fat (P < 0.05), and 10% greater in the carcass (P = 0.10). In the pectoralis muscle, there was a tendency for an increase in the redness value (a*; P = 0.10)*. The TSAA supply affected the AA composition of tissues and tissue gain, but the Met and Cys concentrations were changed only in the offal (P = 0.08). The deficient TSAA supply resulted in an increase in the Ser concentration in the empty body, carcass, and pectoralis muscle (P < 0.05). In contrast, it resulted in a decrease in the concentrations of Lys and Glu in the empty body, of Phe, Tyr, Gly, and Glu in the pectoralis muscle, and of Ala in the offal (P < 0.05). This indicates that although chickens cope with a TSAA deficiency predominantly by changing the pro-tein and lipid concentration in the body, the AA com-position is also affected. When a diet deficient in Val with exces-sive Leu is offered to pigs, feed intake is reduced. The physiological mechanisms underlying the rejection of branched-chain AA (BCAA) unbalance are unknown. A meal pattern analysis was performed to determine how pigs respond to the ingestion of a diet unbalanced in BCAA to identify the mechanisms responsible for the aversive response of such a diet. Eight female pigs (ini-tial BW of 30.7 ± 1.7 kg at 9 wk of age) received alter-natively a diet either unbalanced in BCAA supply (i.e., a diet deficient in Val with an excess supply of Leu) or a control diet (i.e., a diet with a sufficient supply of Val with an excess supply of Leu) during 4 periods of 5 consecutive days. Feed consumption was monitored continuously to determine feeding behavior. Average daily feed intake of pigs receiving the diet unbalanced in BCAA was 13% less than that in pigs offered the con-trol diet (P < 0.01). Offering the unbalanced diet had no effect on meal size but reduced the number of meals from 9.9 to 8.5 per day (P < 0.01). There was no dif-ference between diets in intermeal interval but a slight trend for an increased meal duration from 14.5 to 16.3 min in pigs receiving the unbalanced diet (P = 0.13). The rejection of feed appeared within the first 2 d after offering the unbalanced diet. The results of this experi-ment indicate that the BCAA unbalanced diet had no effect on satiety and satiation. After initiation of a meal, pigs ate a normal-sized meal and were hungry, but the increase in meal duration and a decrease in the number of meals inferred a negative alliesthesia (less pleasant) response to the BCAA unbalanced diet. On the basis of meal patterns, the rejection of a diet unbalanced in BCAA may not involve short-term mechanisms related to oropharyngeal and gastrointestinal receptors but may be triggered by postabsorptive signals. Feed restriction may be a strategy used by fanners to limit digestive disorders after weaning. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of feed restriction applied 1 wk after weaning on growth performance and health of pigs reared in 2 different sanitary conditions (Good vs. Poor; managed in opposite ways with respect to cleaning, animal density, and preventive antibiotic use) and confronted with stressful common farming practices (i.e., diet transition and building transfer). At weaning at 4 wk of age, 48 pigs were assigned to 1 of the 4 experimental treatments consisting of 2 sanitary conditions and 2 feeding levels (ad libitum vs. restricted). At 2 d after weaning, restricted pigs received 20% of the feed quantity consumed by ad libitum pigs. The feeding level of the restricted pigs was gradually increased to attain ad libitum feeding on d 8. Imposed stressful conditions occurred at d 12 (the weaner diet replaced the starter diet), d 33 (transfer of pigs from the weaner unit to the grower unit), and d 47 (the grower diet replaced the weaner diet). This allowed 4 distinguishing phases: I, from 0 to 11 d; II, from 12 to 32 d; III, from 33 to 46 d; and IV, from 47 to 60 d after weaning. Poor sanitary conditions resulted in decreased growth performance during phase I (P < 0.001) and III (P < 0.01), and the final BW of pigs kept in Poor sanitary conditions was 4 kg less (P = 0.02) than those kept in Good sanitary conditions. Plasma haptoglobin concentration was increased on d 12 after weaning (P = 0.001) as was the occurrence of soft feces during phases II and III (P < 0.05) in Poor sanitary conditions. In both sanitary conditions, the restricted feeding level resulted in decreased ADG (P < 0.001), increased plasma haptoglobin and salivary Cortisol concentrations, and feeding-associated behaviors (P < 0.05) during phase 1. In Poor sanitary conditions, feed restriction was very detrimental and differences in ADFI and ADG between restricted and ad libitum pigs increased with time (P = 0.05). Conversely, in Good sanitary conditions, restricted pigs attained the BW of ad libitum pigs before the end of the experiment. In conclusion, imposing feed restriction on pigs during the first days after weaning does not seem to be an effective strategy to decrease the negative effects of Poor sanitary conditions; rather, it reinforces these effects. Indispensable AA are involved in the control of feed intake. When a diet deficient in Val is offered to pigs, feed intake is typically reduced. This effect is aggravated when dietary Leu is supplied in excess of the requirement. If an unbalanced supply of branched-chain AA (BCAA) is harmful, an anorectic response may serve as a mechanism to prevent this situation. We verified this hypothesis by measuring the voluntary feed intake of a balanced diet offered dur-ing the 30-min period 1 h after ingestion of a test meal deficient or not in Val (Val- and Val+) with an excess of Leu. Twelve and four 6-wk-old crossbred female pigs were used in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively. Prior ingestion of the Val- test meal resulted in a 14% reduction in feed intake compared with that observed after ingestion of the Val+ test meal (P = 0.06) in Exp. 1, indicating that the signal to reduce feed intake occurred within 1 h. It is possible that the plasma concentration of the limiting AA serves as a signal for the dietary AA deficiency. We therefore determined the postprandial plasma concen-trations of BCAA and their a-keto acids after ingestion of Val- and Val+ in 4 pigs in Exp. 2. After ingestion of the Val- diet, plasma concentrations of Val and its keto acid were reduced compared with values observed after ingestion of the Val+ diet. The peak concentration occurred earlier after ingestion of the Val- diet com-pared with that of the Val+ diet. Although the plasma concentration increased after the meal, it declined rap-idly in pigs offered Val-, and the Val concentration 4 h after ingestion of the meal was even less than that observed in the fasted state. In conclusion, it appears that the pig is able to detect a deficient supply of Val within 1 h after ingestion. Genetic selection on residual feed intake (RFI) can be used as an alternative method to G:F to improve feed efficiency in pigs. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of selection for RFI on digestive and metabolic utilization of energy in 2 lines of purebred French Large White castrated male pigs obtained from a divergent selection experiment over 6 generations. The RFI+ (high RFI) line consumed more feed than predicted from performance compared with the RFI– (low RFI) line. Digestibility of energy and nutrients, total heat production (HP), HP related to physical activity, and energy and N balance were measured in respiration chambers for a 6–d period in pigs offered feed ad libitum. Pigs remained in the chamber for an additional day and did not receive any feed to estimate the fasting HP and calculate the thermic effect of feeding. Five pairs of 2 littermates from the same farrowing batch were used in each line. Because 2 respiration chambers were available for the trial, pigs were measured regularly during the 25– to 95–kg growing period. Two pigs per chamber were used until pigs reached 45 kg of BW, and 1 pig per chamber was used thereafter. Individual feed intake and BW gain were measured continuously from weaning to the end of the trial. Pigs were fed 3 diets with decreasing CP contents during the 25 to 45 (period 1), 45 to 65 (period 2), and 65 to 95 (period 3) kg of BW periods. Average daily feed intake was greater in RFI+ pigs than in RFI– pigs between 25 and 65 kg of BW (2,128 vs. 1,891 g/d; P < 0.01) and G:F was 8% greater in RFI– pigs compared with RFI+ pigs (P < 0.01). There was no line effect on digestibility coefficients or N retention, irrespective of the experimental period studied. Nitrogen retention was 31.2, 28.7, and 20.8 g/d at periods 1, 2, and 3, respectively (P < 0.001). The HP was greater in RFI+ pigs than in RFI– pigs (1,497 vs. 1,383 kJ∙kg of BW–0.60∙d–1; P < 0.01), with no subsequent line effect on energy retention. The activity-related HP tended to be greater in RFI+ pigs than in RFI– pigs (250 vs. 218 kJ∙kg of BW–0.60∙d–1; P = 0.09), and the fasting HP was 10% greater (P = 0.04) in RFI+ pigs than in RFI–1 pigs (846 vs. 771 kJ∙kg of BW–0.60∙d–1). The thermic effect of feeding, expressed as a percentage of ME intake, was the same for both lines of pigs (average, 14.7%). Feed is one of the most important cost factors in poultry production, and energy represents the largest fraction of this cost. Surprisingly little is known about the energy utilization in turkeys. A better understanding of the energy utilization by growing turkeys may contribute to improve the efficiency of nutrient and energy utilization. The objective of the present study was to quantify the change in energy utilization in male turkeys during growth. Energy and nitrogen balances were performed in a respiration chamber in medium-type male turkeys to partition ME intake between heat production (HP) and energy retention as protein and lipid. The measurements consisted of 7-d balance periods during which the turkeys were offered feed ad libitum during 6 d, followed by 1 d of fasting. Total HP was partitioned into fasting HP, activity-related HP, and thermic effect of feeding. Results of the components of ME utilization were analyzed by ANOVA. Also, the maintenance energy expenditure and efficiencies of energy utilization were estimated by multiple regression analysis. Feed intake and growth were in line with the recommendations of the breeder. Fasting HP was proportional to BW raised to the power 0.75. The ME intake decreased with increasing BW and HP increased from 53 to 64% of ME intake at 0.5 and 13.5 kg of BW, respectively. The fasting HP represented the largest part of HP and averaged 449 kJ.(kg of BW)-75.d-1. The activity-related HP accounted for 9.1% of ME intake, whereas the thermic effect of feeding decreased with increasing BW and ranged from 17.9 to 14.5% of ME intake. Energy retained as protein decreased with increasing BW from 67 to 37% of energy retention. The maintenance energy expenditure was estimated at 641 kJ.(kg of BW)-75.d-1, whereas energy efficiencies for protein and lipid retention were 65 and 100%, respectively. Most studies concerning the Ile requirement in pigs have been carried out using blood products as a protein source, and these have a relatively low Ile content relative to the other branched-chain AA (BCAA). There are indications that an excess supply of one BCAA can affect the utilization of the other BCAA. Little information is available concerning the Ile requirement in pigs when the supply of the other BCAA is moderate (e.g., in cereal-and soybean meal-based diets). The objective of the present study was to evaluate the response of piglets to Ile supplementation under different nutritional conditions. In all experiments, piglets were housed individually and had ad libitum access to feed during a 3-wk period. The first experiment was carried out to study the response of piglets to an increasing Ile supply by using 2 sources of L-Ile differing in degree of purity. Piglets received either a control diet with 48% standardized ileal digestible (SID) Ile:Lys or 1 of 4 other diets containing graded levels of either source of L-Ile to provide 52 or 56% SID Ile:Lys. All diets were formulated to provide 1.00% SID Lys in the diet. Feed intake and growth were not affected by Ile level or Ile source. Experiment 2 was performed to exclude a possible interaction between Ile and Lys supply. In a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement, 2 levels of Lys (1.00 and 1.15% SID Lys) and 2 levels of Ile (48 and 60% SID Ile:Lys) were used. Growth and G:F were 8 and 7% greater in piglets receiving the diet with the greater Lys content, but the Ile:Lys did not affect performance. No interactions were observed between the Lys and Ile supplies. In Exp. 3, a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement was used to test the effect of protein source (spray-dried blood cells or corn gluten meal) and Ile supply (50 or 65% SID Ile:Lys) on performance in piglets. Both protein sources had an elevated BCAA content but differed in Leu and Val contents. Protein source or Ile supply did not affect feed intake, growth, or G:F in the piglets. Plasma concentrations after an overnight fast reflected the difference in AA concentrations of the diets. In conclusion, the results of these experiments indicate that the SID Ile:Lys requirement may be not greater than 50% in piglets receiving cereal- and soybean meal-based diets with a moderate BCAA content. Abstract: The purpose of this study is to identify the hierarchy of importance amongst pathways involved in fatty acid (FA) metabolism and their regulators in the control of hepatic FA composition. A modeling approach was applied to experimental data obtained during fasting in knockout (KO) mice and wild-type mice. A step-by-step procedure was used in which a very simple model was completed by additional pathways until the model fitted correctly the measured quantities of FA in the liver. The resulting model included FA uptake by the liver, FA oxidation, elongation and desaturation of FA, which were found active in both genotypes during fasting. From the model analysis we concluded that had a strong effect on FA oxidation. There were no indications that this effect changes during the fasting period, and it was thus considered to be constant. In KO mice, FA uptake was identified as the main pathway responsible for FA variation in the liver. The models showed that FA were oxidized at a constant and small rate, whereas desaturation of FA also occurred during fasting. The latter observation was rather unexpected, but was confirmed experimentally by the measurement of delta-6-desaturase mRNA using real-time quantitative PCR (QPCR). These results confirm that mathematical models can be a useful tool in identifying new biological hypotheses and nutritional routes in metabolism. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Voluntary feed intake in sows after parturition may be related to the capacity of the sow to cope with the numerous changes occurring around farrowing. This experiment was undertaken to investigate whether the feed intake during lactation was related to the reactivity of the sow during gestation and plasma Trp and cortisol concentrations. On d 58 of pregnancy, 37 sows were individually placed in a novel environment, and their behavior was observed during a 5-mm open-field test. This test allowed the selection of 12 reactive (R) and 8 nonreactive (NR) sows for the study. Sows were fed 3 kg of a standard gestation diet/d before farrowing and a standard lactation diet ad libitum thereafter. The behavioral reactivity of sows when a human touched their neck in the farrowing crate was evaluated on d 72 of gestation, and their behavior during farrowing was analyzed. Sows were catheterized on d 70 of gestation, and blood samples were taken after an overnight fast on d 37 before farrowing, daily during the week before and the week after parturition, and on d 14 and 21 of lactation for plasma Trp and cortisol determination. The NR sows were less reactive to human contact (P = 0.02), had a shorter farrowing duration (P = 0.02), and tended to have a shorter birth interval between piglets (P = 0.09) than the R sows. Feed in-take was greater for the NR sows than for the R sows during wk 1 of lactation (P = 0.02), as well as during the whole lactation (P = 0.03). Plasma cortisol concen- tration was maximal on the day after farrowing (P = 0.01) and returned to basal concentration within 4 d postpartum. No relationship was observed between sow behavior and plasma concentration of cortisol. For both groups of sows, plasma concentrations of Trp between d 2 and 4 postpartum were less than during gestation (P < 0.05). The NR sows had decreased plasma Trp concentrations compared with the R sows during wk 1 of lactation (P = 0.02). A low reactivity during gestation was associated with behavior of the sow that was favorable to piglet survival during farrowing, increased feed intake, and decreased plasma Trp concentration during wk 1 of lactation. To reduce the impact of animal production on the environment, the CP content of the diet can be reduced by limiting the excess supply of AA. Improving the balance between AA relative to the requirement of the animal implies that we need to have accurate knowledge of the requirement of individual AA. The purpose of this study was to determine the Val requirement in postweaned piglets (12 to 25 kg) because Val is considered to be potentially limiting to performance after Lys, Met (and Cys), Thr, and Trp. The first experiment was carried out to identify a diet limiting in Lys supply. In this experiment, piglets were offered 1 of 3 diets: a low-CP diet containing low or adequate Lys concentrations [providing 1.0 and 1.2% standardized ileal digestible (SID) Lys, respectively] or a normal-CP diet with 1.2% SID Lys. Average daily gain of piglets receiving the diet containing 1.0% SID Lys was significantly less than that of piglets receiving diets containing 1.2% SID Lys at low or normal CP (486 vs. 522 g/d, respectively; P < 0.01). In Exp. 2, four diets with SID Lys were used in a 2 x 2 factorial design, in which diets contained 57 or 70% SID Val:Lys in combination with 50 or 60% SID Ile:Lys. Independent of the Ile supply, feed intake and daily BW gain were, respectively, 15 and 20% less in piglets receiving diets providing 57% SID Val:Lys compared with piglets receiving 70% SID Val:Lys (P < 0.001). The Tie content of the diet did not affect feed intake or daily BW gain (P > 0.10). Experiment 3 was conducted to evaluate the response of piglets to an increasing Val supply provided by 2 sources of L-Val differing in the degree of purity. Increasing the Val supply from. 58 to 66% SID Val:Lys resulted in a linear increase in both feed intake and daily gain by 24 and 30%, respectively (P < 0.001). No difference was observed between both sources of L-Val (P > 0.10). Experiment 4 was a dose-response study using 5 concentrations of Val supply (ranging from 60 to 80% SID Val:Lys). The estimated SID Val:Lys requirements for maximizing ADFI, ADG, and G:F were, respectively, 74, 70, and 68% using a linear-plateau model, and 81, 75, and 72% using a curvilinear-plateau model. Plasma Val, plasma α-ketoisovaleric acid, Ile, and Leu concentrations after an overnight fast increased with increasing Val supply (P < 0.001). Nutritional feed values are currently based on aggregate criteria such as the ileal or faecal digestibility. Digestibility is the result of several processes including hydrolysis, absorption, secretion and passage. In order to develop mechanistic models of digestion to be used for feed evaluation, these processes have to be quantified. The aim of the current study was to determine the enzymatic hydrolysis (or: in vitro digestion) kinetics of main constituents (organic matter, nitrogen and starch) in wheat, barley, wheat bran and soybean meal, using a three-step, enzymatic in vitro method that mimics digestion in the stomach, small and large intestine of pigs. The in vitro results were compared with in vivo results. Hydrolysis kinetics (i.e., solubilisation of feed constituents) was modelled using an exponential segmented model estimating the extent and rate of digestion for each enzymatic digestion step. In vitro digestion of organic matter of soybean meal occurred mainly through the action of pepsin (0.67 versus <0.30 for other feeds, P<0.05), which was caused by the enzymatic digestion of protein at this site. Organic matter of cereals was mainly hydrolysed by enzymes mimicking digestion in the small intestine, and was mainly caused by starch digestion. Fractional in vitro digestion rates of organic matter were higher in the stomach than in the small intestine for cereals (0.20–0.34 min−1versus 0.02–0.15 min−1, P<0.05). The potential in vitro digestibility of organic matter was nearly 0.88 for wheat and soybean meal, 0.79 for barley and 0.61 for wheat bran, which correspond to typical in vivo digestibility values. The in vitro digestibility corresponded reasonably well to in vivo results for enzyme systems mimicking ileal and total tract digestion. The impact of dietary fiber on fecal digestion is well-known and provides a comprehensive approach toward nutrient digestibility and availability. Little quantitative information is available on digestion of fiber in the different segments of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). The objectives of this study were to obtain a method allowing the quantification of the digestive process in different segments of the GIT and to study the impact of dietary fiber on nutrient digestibility. Six barrows (average initial BW of 30 kg and fitted with a simple T-cannula at the proximal duodenum and caudal ileum) were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design. In each period, pigs were offered 1 of 3 diets differing in fiber content (low, medium, and high). Differences in fiber content were created by replacing wheat and barley with wheat bran. Titanium dioxide was included in the diet as an indigestible marker to determine the apparent digestibility coefficients in different segments of the GIT. The apparent digestibility of ash, CP, DM, and OM increased in the different segments of the GIT. Duodenal digestibility coefficients were negative for ash (e.g., -39.9% for the medium- and high-fiber diets), indicating important endogenous mineral secretions by the stomach and digestive glands. The duodenal digestibility of other nutrients and OM were positive but close to zero and numerically lower in the diets with the greater fiber contents. The fiber content in the diet did not affect the apparent ileal digestibility of nutrients. Increasing the fiber content in the diet affected the fecal digestibility of CP, ether extract, and energy (P < 0.01). The method used for studying sites of digestion in the digestive tract provides promising results, but it is limited due to the high variability that is likely caused by sampling limitations and variation between animals. An experiment was carried out to evaluate the metabolic utilization of energy in crossbred barrows during feed restriction and subsequent refeeding. Ten pigs, initially weighing 52 kg, were used in 5 blocks of 2 littermates each. A 7-d adaptation period (P1) was used in which pigs were offered feed at 2.60 MJ of ME·kg of BW-0.60·d-1. This adaptation period was followed by a 7-d period (P2), in which 1 pig of each block continued to receive feed at the same level of feeding, whereas for its littermate a 40% reduction in feed intake was imposed (i.e., 1.55 MJ of ME·kg of BW-0.60·d-1). During the subsequent 7-d period (P3), both pigs were offered feed at 2.60 MJ of ME·kg of BW-0.60·d-1. After P3, pigs were fasted for 1 d. Heat production (HP) was measured for all pigs during the last 3 d of P1 and on all days for P2 and P3. Heat production was measured using an open-circuit respiration chamber. Energy and N balances were determined for P1, P2, and P3. The HP was partitioned into HP due to physical activity, the short-term thermic effect of feeding, and resting HP. Feed restriction during P2 decreased (P < 0.01) total HP, resting HP, short-term thermic effect of feeding, and retained energy, whereas HP due to physical activity was not affected by feed restriction (P = 0.50). Likewise, fecal and urinary N loss, protein gain, lipid gain, and ADG were reduced during feed restriction (P < 0.01). There were no differences in components of HP and metabolic utilization of energy between the 2 groups during P1 and P3. Nevertheless, urinary N loss was decreased (P < 0.05) and ADG increased (P < 0.01) during P3 for pigs that were restricted in P2. Compensatory growth after a period of feed restriction does not seem to be related to a change in the metabolic utilization of energy for gain but more likely is due to gain in water and gut contents. Twelve multiparous sows with an average initial weight of 182 kg were used in a randomized complete block design to determine the effects of feeding Carnichrome (50 mg of carnitine and 200 µg of chromium picolinate per kilogram of feed, as fed) on energy and nitrogen utilization in early, mid-, and late gestation. All sows were fed a diet with or without Carnichrome for the preceding 28-d lactation, the weaning-toestrus period, and for the duration of gestation. Daily feeding allowances over pregnancy were based on calculated energy and nutrient requirements to achieve a target sow maternal weight gain of 20 kg and remained constant throughout gestation. Heat production (HP) and its partitioning (activity, thermic effect of feeding short term [TEFst], basal) were determined in early (wk 5 or 6), mid- (wk 9 or 10), and late (wk 14 or 15) pregnancy using indirect calorimetry. Net maternal weight gain and total number of fetuses averaged 21.6 kg and 16.4, respectively. Organic matter and energy digestibility for the Carnichrome diet was greater (P < 0.05), which resulted in greater DE and ME contents (0.6%, P < 0.05) compared with the control diet. The digestibility coefficient of energy in the current experiment for a typical corn and soybean meal diet (92%) was greater than that predicted from DE values of corn and soybean meal in feeding tables (88%). Carnichrome had no effect on total HP, energy retained as protein or lipid, and maternal energy retention in early, mid-, or late gestation. Heat production in late gestation increased linearly (4.0 kJ/[kg BW0.75·d]) for each additional day from d 90 to 110, despite the reduction of ME intake per unit of BW0.75. Metabolizable energy requirement for maintenance was 405 kJ/(kg BW0.75·d). On average, activity HP was 116 kJ/(kg BW0.75·d), which was equivalent to 20% of ME intake; however, this value ranged from 11 to 37% between sows, which corresponds to duration of standing ranging from 210 to 490 min/d. Energy cost of standing activity averaged 0.30 kJ/(kg BW0.75·min). In conclusion, Carnichrome had no effect on the components of heat production and maternal weight gain during gestation, although it improved energy and organic matter digestibility of the diet. Mathematical models are increasingly used to predict the response of an animal to a changing nutrient supply. The objective of this experiment was to provide data that can be used in model development or evaluation and concerns the energetic efficiency with which nutrients are used for protein and lipid deposition. A basal diet (D1), limiting in lysine supply, was fed at 1.7 MJ metabolizable energy (ME)/(kg BW(0.60) x d1) to growing pigs that weighed approximately 60 kg. Four additional diets were formulated: the basal diet and a dietary supplement that consisted of starch (D2), starch and corn gluten meal (D3), starch and casein (D4) or starch and lipid (D5). The latter four diets were fed at 2.55 MJ ME/(kg BW(0.60) x d1) and ensured the same intake of the basal diet across treatments; the difference was supplied by the supplement. Metabolic utilization of the basal diet and supplements was determined using nitrogen and energy balances (indirect calorimetry). The N retention was similar in pigs fed diets D1, D2, D3 and D5 but considerably higher in those fed D4. A data analysis model was developed to account for differences in ME utilization between nutrients. The ME not deposited as protein entered a common pool of energy, which was used for adenosine triphosphate synthesis or lipid deposition. The energetic efficiencies of ME utilization were 0.842, 0.520 and 0.883 for starch, protein and lipid, respectively. Abstract: Nutritional feed values are currently based on aggregate criteria such as the ileal or faecal digestibility. Digestibility is the result of two competing processes: digestion and passage. In order to develop mechanistic models of digestion to be used for feed evaluation, both processes have to be quantified. The aim of this study was to determine the hydrolysis kinetics of main constituents (organic matter, N and starch) in wheat, barley, wheat bran and soybean meal, using a three-step, enzymatic in vitro method mimicking digestion in the stomach, small and large intestine of pigs. Kinetics of hydrolysis (i.e. solubilisation of feed constituents) was modelled using an exponential segmented model estimating the extent and rate of digestion in each digestive segment. Digestion of organic matter of soybean meal occurred mainly in the stomach (67% vs. <30% for other feeds) resulting from an efficient protein hydrolysis at this site. Organic matter of cereals was mainly digested in the small intestine (55%), as a result of starch digestion. Fractional digestion rates of organic matter were higher in the stomach than in the small intestine (20–35 vs. 2–15%/min). The potential digestibility of organic matter was nearly 87% for wheat and soybean meal, 78% for barley and 61% for wheat bran, which correspond to typical in vivo digestibility values. Abstract: Development of mechanistic models of digestion is a means to account for interactions between different nutrients, and between nutrients and the animal. Although some digestion models for pigs have been proposed, quantitative information concerning the underlying processes is extremely limiting. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of dietary fibre on the transit of the solid and liquid phases of digesta in different segments of the gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) in growing pigs. Six barrows (initial BW 30 kg and fitted with two simple T-cannulas at the proximal duodenum and distal ileum) were used in a double 3×3 Latin square design. Pigs were offered diets differing in total dietary fibre content (17, 22 and 27%) at 4 h intervals. A single meal marked with YbO2 and Cr-EDTA was used to determine the passage kinetics of respectively the solid and liquid phases of digesta in different segments of the GIT. The mean retention time (MRT) averaged 1 h from the mouth to the proximal duodenum (stomach), 4 h from the proximal duodenum to the distal ileum (small intestine), and 35 h from the distal ileum to the faecal excretion (large intestine). Increase in dietary fibre content had no effect on MRT in the stomach, tended to decrease MRT of solid phase in the small intestine (P =0.07), and decreased MRT of both phases in the large intestine (43 to 29 h, P =0.06). For all diets, transit of the liquid phase in the large intestine was 4–8 h less than transit of the solid phase. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
