- Abstract
This revised and expanded new edition reviews surgical decision-making in complex surgical procedures, including making difficult decisions, continuous awareness of the patient's physiologic status, the biochemical profile, endpoint resuscitation and the surgeon's own physiologic status. Other specific surgical decisions are discussed, such as when to operate and when not to operate, re-operations and operations in specific conditions and age groups. This new edition addresses these and other elements that are important for the intraoperative and perioperative decision-making process, including basic questions that have not been answered appropriately in the literature. Many of us make decisions based on current evidence, but much of it based on “a gut feeling” or “intuition” or the “gray hair effect,” among other techniques. In this book, the anatomy of such decisions is explored from a theoretical standpoint as well as objective data that we as surgeons use to make surgical decisions. Nowhere else is the matter of how we make a decision -- often with a very limited amount of data, decisions that will decide between someone living or dying -- more prevalent than in trauma surgery and other complex surgeries, including the unplanned return to the operating room. Our collective firsthand experience as surgeons points to a combination of factors contributing to our perioperative and intraoperative decision-making process, including education, clinical know-how, mentoring, and the creativity and excellence that come with long practice and strict discipline. The second edition of Surgical Decision-Making: Evidence and Beyond provides a unique and valuable resource in the field for surgeons currently in training and for those already in clinical academic or community surgery practice.

- Abstract
This Sage Handbook presents an interdisciplinary collection of chapters exploring how to assess the quality of collecting and analysing qualitative data, while maintaining a focus on diversity, digital and critical approaches. The Handbook considers essential questions such as what is good qualitative research? What makes qualitative research good research? And, how can we make qualitative research better research? Contributions come from a wide array of experts, and highlight answers to questions from various disciplinary and geographical areas; from mixed methods to multimodal and online research, from specific types of data and methods to specific target groups, and from theoretical and epistemological contexts to those where funding has an impact on how research is done and assessed. Qualitative research has evolved in many respects in recent decades and has grown increasingly multidisciplinary. Research in general is facing new challenges around how to take diversity and decolonisation into account in what researchers do, as well as how to produce and communicate qualitative research quality. This Handbook offers a timely overview of such developments, and will support researchers involved in planning, designing, doing and evaluating qualitative research in developing an increased sensitivity for contemporary debates and challenges in the field. Part I Philosophies and Epistemologies of Qualitative Research Quality Part II Disciplinary Discourses of Qualitative Research Quality Part III Qualitative Research Quality for Specific Approaches Part IV Rethinking Qualitative Research Quality for Specific Methods and Data Part V Rethinking Strategies for Quality in Qualitative Research Part VI Rethinking Criteria for Quality in Qualitative Research Part VII Extending Contexts and Challenges for Qualitative Research Quality

- Abstract
Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2024 in the subject Business economics - Law,, language: English, abstract: This dissertation examines the impact of procedural justice on citizens'perceptions of police legitimacy in Trinidad and Tobago. The focus is on the erosion of public trust in law enforcement and how procedural justice can help rebuild that trust. Using Tom Tyler's procedural justice model as the theoretical framework, the study analyzes the significance of several influencing variables on the perception of legitimacy. Employing a convergent parallel mixed-methods design, data were collected through online questionnaires, interviews, and focus groups. The findings indicate that procedural justice is the most important predictor of police legitimacy and emphasize its applicability in developing nations. The research aimed to expand the external validity of the theory and establish a new framework for trust and image restoration in police organizations.

- Abstract
Understanding Kidney Diseases makes accessible a medical specialty that is commonly regarded by students as difficult. The target audience is undergraduate and non-specialist postgraduate students. The book is unique in combining the reference material normally found in a nephrology textbook with the everyday clinical applicability of a medical handbook. The chapters are structured on the approach that a clinician should take when assessing someone with a possible kidney problem. The factual content is brought to life by over 60 case studies and is illustrated by a high density of figures, many displaying information in a graphical form that avoids off-putting data and text. It is an authored book, written in a consistent style that is deliberately clear, concise and easy to follow. Nonetheless, it is referenced in as much detail as would be expected in a conventional textbook. It explains principles and concepts that help students understand and interpret clinical problems. No other textbook of nephrology combines these features. The book emphasises a patient-centred approach to practice. Students'knowledge can be put it into practice by answering a bank of questions that patients frequently ask, and tested against traditional multiple-choice questions. In summary, Understanding Kidney Diseases gives students confidence in helping someone with a kidney problem. Praised by leading nephrologists, it is the book the authors wish they could have read when they were students.

- Abstract
South Africa was the hope of the world. It had an impressive and rich tradition of left politics. At the heart of post-apartheid democracy-making was a revolutionary nationalist ANC, the oldest Communist Party in Africa, the SACP, and one of the most militant labour union federations in the world, COSATU. Yet, South Africa is at a crossroads and many are deeply concerned about its future. This book explains through a political economy/ecology analysis why and how the degeneration of national liberation politics has happened, while making praxis-centered arguments for a new transformative left politics.

- Abstract
This book examines recent key findings on the mechanisms of axonal and dendritic remodeling in different model organisms. Each chapter is contributed by a panel of experts in their respective subfields of neurosciences, to provide and discuss the latest discoveries ranging from neuronal morphogenesis during development, experience-dependent structural plasticity, to neuronal degeneration, regeneration, and pathologies in neurological disorders. The process of neuronal remodeling, specifically their axons and dendrites, is essential for the proper wiring of the nervous system during early development and continues during postnatal ages to shape the pattern of synaptic connections throughout the life of the organism, including humans. Over recent years, substantial progress has been made in our understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that control neuronal remodeling. In addition, there is accumulating evidence demonstrating how the nervous system could remodel in response to injury and in pathological conditions.Topics discussed in the book include: Axonal degeneration during development and in pathological or disease conditions Neuronal morphogenesis (axons and dendrites) Experience-dependent structural plasticity to synaptogenesis Dendrite degeneration and regeneration

- Abstract
This book is a curated collection of international chapters focused on the reform of K-12 schools. Three key, yet different cultural, economic, and political settings are highlighted: Australia, the UK, and the US. Within their own context, each author details the required reforms that would maximize learning for all students. The intersectionalities of factors such a race, gender, class, ethnicity, disability, language, and economic inequities, are interrogated for their impact on the efficacy of reform strategies. Authors explore both a range of dysfunctional factors which have historically limited the efficacy of school reform initiatives, and detail a variety of forward-looking and cutting edge alternative reforms. Thus, this text can serve to stimulate a much need dialogue about the reconceptualization of schools in the future. Moreover, the cross-cultural analysis can focus this dialogue on both the similarities and differences in varying cultural settings.

- Abstract
Narratives of Becoming Leaders in Disciplinary and Institutional Contexts provides theoretically informed personal narratives of nine emerging and established leaders in learning and teaching in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, the UK and the USA. The academics'narratives consider how individuals navigate the disciplinary and institutional context as emergent and established leaders in learning and teaching. These learning and teaching leadership narratives highlight the commonalities and differences in the struggles that academic leaders across the world encounter within their unique institutional and disciplinary contexts. The journeys of learning and teaching leadership are often fuzzy owing to lack of well-established structures and pathways which may be further complicated by the unique institutional and disciplinary contexts. This book contributes to our understanding of the impact of disciplinary and institutional contexts on the practice of learning and teaching leaders. It captures the subjective experiences of academics at various stages in their career, navigating their individual pathways of learning and teaching leadership within their national context.

However, unlike other series on medicine or medical texts, this series focuses on current trends, perspectives, and issues in medicine that are central to healthcare delivery in the 21st century. Medical practitioners today continue to improve upon techniques and technologies to provide procedures for patients that are safer, faster, less invasive, and more accurate —a direct consequence of advances in technological breakthroughs from a variety of medical and engineering fields. In order to render modern patient care, it is imperative that surgeons and medical practitioners stay current with these latest advances in their respective specialties. Given this backdrop, the specific topics covered in this volume and the expertise of the contributing authors accurately reflect the rapidly evolving areas within surgical and medical specialties. While recognising how expansive and multifaceted medicine is, Advances in Surgical and Medical Specialties addresses crucial recent advances in surgical and medical specialties, intergrating the knowledge and experience of experts from academia and practicing surgeons. The multidisciplinary approach reflected here makes this volume a valuable reference resource for medical practictioners, medical students, nurses, fellows, residents, undergraduate and graduate students, educators, venture capitalists, policymakers, and biomedical researchers. A wide audience will benefit from having this volume on their bookshelf: health care systems, the pharmaceutical industry, academia, and government.

- Abstract
Democracy should enable citizens to play an informed role in determining how power is exercised for their common wellbeing, but this only works if people have the understanding, skills and confidence to engage effectively in public affairs. Otherwise, any voting system can be subverted to serve the interests of propagandists and demagogues. This book brings together leading experts on learning for democracy to explore why and how the gap in civic competence should be bridged. Drawing on research findings and case examples from the UK, the US and elsewhere, it will set out why change is necessary, what could be taught differently to ensure effective political engagement, and how a lasting impact in improving citizens'learning for democratic participation can be made.

- Abstract
This book examines the intersections between children, education and geography. With a particular focus on children's geographies and geographies of education, the book draws upon cutting-edge research to consider how geographical education can be enhanced through increased engagement with these fields. The book is underpinned by the position that the lives of children and young people are inherently geographical, as are educational institutions, systems and processes. The volume explores the ways in which the diverse relationships between children, education and geography can enrich research and work with, and for, children and young people. Chapters in this book consider how in/justices are (re)produced through education. Chapters also explore how insights generated by thinking in, and across, geography and education can be used to support and empower young people in both formal education and in their everyday lives.Ultimately, this book is written for children and young people. Not as the readership, but as people, often marginalised in decision making at a variety of scales in education, and who, we contend should be at the heart of all educational thinking. The book is of value to undergraduate and post graduate students interested in geography education and children's geographies, as well as teachers of geography, both new and experienced.

- Abstract
It is well known that certain diseases and patient conditions are associated with increased perioperative risk. The aim of this book is to define and identify the clinical factors that warrant a broader and more detailed assessment of pre-operative surgical risk in difficult and unusual clinical settings. One of the sections is dedicated to the main pathway of peri- and post-surgical critical care based on the patient-specific deterioration risk and associated diseases; here, a panel of selected experts describes the correct patient-oriented pathways for complex or unscheduled surgical operations in order to reduce the operative risk. In addition, the book describes the latest trends in minimally invasive surgical techniques that are associated with peri- and post-operative risk reduction, and provides an overview of recent advances in surgical simulation, focusing on perspectives in surgical research to increase patient safety.Guidance is also provided on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs), and their management in patients requiring emergency surgery. The book will help surgical trainees recognize cases with the highest surgical risk and identify the most common complications at an early stage.

- Abstract
This book represents the first complete and systematic guide to the virus-like particles (VLPs) and their applications as vaccines, therapeutic tools, nanomaterials, and nanodevices. The grouping of the VLPs follows the most recent virus taxonomy and the traditional Baltimore classification of viruses, which are based on the genome structure and mechanism of mRNA synthesis. Within each of the seven Baltimore classes, the order taxon serves as a framework of the chapter's arrangement. The term'VLP'is used as a universal designation for the virus-, core-, or capsid-like structures, which became an important part of the modern molecular virology. The 3D structures, expression systems, and nanotechnological applications are described for VLPs in the context of the original viruses and uncover their evolving potential as novel vaccines and medical interventions. Key Features Presents the first full guide to the VLP nanotechnology, classified by current viral taxonomy Outlines specific structural properties and interconnection of the virions and VLPs Explains generation and characteristics of VLPs produced by various expression systems Offers up-to-date summary of VLPs designed as vaccines and delivery tools Unveils interconnection of VLPs with novel organic and inorganic nanomaterials
