In dieser 3-bändigen Monographie wird erstmals der Versuch unternommen, die Entwicklung der Physik im Zusammenwirken mit der Mathematik und mit den aus ihr hervorgegangenen Teildisziplinen der Nachbarwissenschaften an der Universität Leipzig seit ihrer Gründung und in ihrem wissenschaftlichen Umfeld nachzuzeichnen. Diese lokale Physikgeschichte wird im Kontext der Entwicklung der Physik als Fachdisziplin und mit Blick auf die sächsische Geschichte beschrieben. Die Darstellung der Physik im Wechselspiel mit der Mathematik gliedert sich in vier, durch besondere Ereignisse markierte zeitliche Perioden (Bände I und II), die sich auch in den Abhandlungen zur Astronomie und den physikalisch relevanten Teilen der Chemie, der Geo- und der Lebenswissenschaften widerspiegeln (Band III). In die Darstellung gehen neben den in Leipzig erbrachten Leistungen der hier wirkenden Gelehrten über deren'Lebensbilder'Bezüge zu anderen wissenschaftlichen Institutionen ein. Die Abhandlung der Forschungen wird ergänzt durch die Einbindung aller dabei entstandenen Promotionen. Mehrere Einschübe lenken den Blick auf besondere Umstände. Biogramme aller erfassten Wissenschaftler bereichern das Gesamtbild.

Jews and Armenians are often perceived as peoples with similar tragic historical experiences. Not only were both groups forced into statelessness and a life outside their homelands for centuries, in the 20th century, in the shadow of war, they were threatened with collective annihilation. Thus far, academic approaches to these two'classical'diasporas have been quite different. Moreover, Armenian and Jewish questions posed during the 19th and 20th centuries have usually been treated separately. The conference “We Will Live After Babylon” that took place in Hanover in February 2019, addressed this gap in research and was one of the first initiatives to deal directly with Jewish and Armenian historical experiences, between expulsion, exile and annihilation, in a comparative framework. The contributions in this volume take on multidisciplinary approaches relating to the conference's central themes: diaspora, minority issues and genocide.

Boris Pavlov (1936-2016), to whom this volume is dedicated, was a prominent specialist in analysis, operator theory, and mathematical physics. As one of the most influential members of the St. Petersburg Mathematical School, he was one of the founders of the Leningrad School of Non-self-adjoint Operators. This volume collects research papers originating from two conferences that were organized in memory of Boris Pavlov: “Spectral Theory and Applications”, held in Stockholm, Sweden, in March 2016, and “Operator Theory, Analysis and Mathematical Physics – OTAMP2016” held at the Euler Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia, in August 2016. The volume also includes water-color paintings by Boris Pavlov, some personal photographs, as well as tributes from friends and colleagues.

Sophocles'play Antigone is a starting point for understanding the perpetual problems of human societies, families, and individuals who are caught up in the terrible aftermath of mass violence. What is one to do after the killing has stopped? What can be done to prevent a round of new violence? The tragic and dramatic tension in the play is put in motion by setting an unyielding Antigone against King Creon. As we see through the investigation of how Germany, Japan, Spain, Yugoslavia and Turkey have dealt with their histories of mass violence and genocide in the 20th century, the forces represented by Antigone and Creon remain very much part of our world today. Through a comparison of the five countries, their political institutions, and cultural traditions, we begin to appreciate the different pathways that societies have taken when confronting their violent histories.
