This volume constitutes the proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Combinatorial Optimization and Applications, COCOA 2019, held in Xiamen, China, in December 2019. The 49 full papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 108 submissions. The papers cover the various topics, including cognitive radio networks, wireless sensor networks, cyber-physical systems, distributed and localized algorithm design and analysis, information and coding theory for wireless networks, localization, mobile cloud computing, topology control and coverage, security and privacy, underwater and underground networks, vehicular networks, information processing and data management, programmable service interfaces, energy-efficient algorithms, system and protocol design, operating system and middleware support, and experimental test-beds, models and case studies.

Although wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been employed across a range of applications, there are few books available that cover the required algorithms, performance analysis, and applications of network management techniques in WSNs. Filling this need, this book presents new network management techniques that can address many of the shortcomings of traditional techniques. It summarizes traditional and classical network management techniques as well as state-of-the-art methods.

Wireless sensor networks are being employed in a variety applications ra- ing from medical to military, and from home to industry. The principle aim of this book is to provide a reference tool for the increasing number of scientists who depend upon sensor networks in some way. The book is organized into several sections, each including chapters exploring a speci?c topic. Wireless sensor networks are attracting great attention and there are many research topics yet to be studied. Section I introduces the design and modelling of sensor networks. Chapter 1, by Iyer, Kulkarni, Mhatre, and Rosenberg, presents a taxonomy of wireless sensor networks, based on their application level objectives, tra–c characteristics and data delivery requi- ments. Popa and Lewis in Chapter 2 describe some algorithms for systematic exploration of unknown environments using a mobile wireless sensor network.

Combinatorial optimization algorithms are used in many applications including the design, management, and operations of communication networks. The objective of this book is to advance and promote the theory and applications of combinatorial optimization in communication networks. Each chapter of the book is written by an expert dealing with theoretical, computational, or applied aspects of combinatorial optimization. Topics covered in the book include the combinatorial optimization problems arising in optical networks, wireless ad hoc networks, sensor networks, mobile communication systems, and satellite networks. A variety of problems are addressed using combinatorial optimization techniques, ranging from routing and resource allocation to QoS provisioning.
