- Energy consumption, Bubbles--Thermodynamics, Vacuum technology, Sustainable engineering, Vacuum, Bubbles
- Abstract
Vacuum Bubbling introduces the background and applications for generating bubbles under a vacuum condition, accomplished through depressurization without the need to heat water. It presents the advantage of utilizing vapor bubble in deaeration applications because the diffusion for degassing happens between the water body and micro vapor bubbles without the need of membrane or packing.Instead of relying on massive heating, vacuum bubbling focuses on depressurization down to the level of saturated vapor pressure or below to secure vapor bubbles with virtually zero dissolved non-condensable gases, including oxygen. The book considers prospective applications, such as extracting high-oxygen-content air from water for underwater breathing, pretreatment of aircraft fuel before being pumped into a fuel tank system, and probable desalination applications through massive bubbling combined with low-grade renewable energy. The book is intended for researchers in thermal fluids, heat and mass transfer, process engineering, and water treatment fields and industry professionals working in power generation, plant and process engineering, transportation, and energy.

- Abstract
This book presents an overview of engineering as it relates to humanitarian engineering, service-learning engineering, peace engineering, or engineering for community-led development, programs that are often grouped under Engineering for Good or Engineering for Change. By placing “community” at the center of these endeavors, this book invites readers and practitioners to strive for sustainable community development (SCD). This 2nd edition is centered on new concepts of community-led development and includes topics on the history of engineers and development, the problems of using industry-based practices when designing for communities, how engineers can prepare to work with communities, and listening in community development. Two case studies are provided to highlight the book's concepts using first-hand experiences of engineers engaged with communities—one of engineers developing a windmill for a community in India, and a second of an engineer mapping communities inHonduras for improved water management. The book concludes with student perspectives and experiences from a curricular model focused on engineering for sustainable community development. Overall, the text invites engineers to reflect and prepare themselves for global careers that involve international development in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors. This 2nd edition places community-led practices at the heart of these endeavors. The book is for engineering faculty, students and practicing engineers, involved in current or future community collaborations. The authors wrote this book with a goal to help readers critically reflect on their own practices and perceptions. Readers learn to question past, current, and future frameworks in the project of development, and are encouraged to adopt practices of community-led development. This 2nd edition is aimed at engineering students who, as future global engineers, are faced with opportunities and challenges when working with communities. As funding for renewable energy, “green jobs,” and community-based initiatives continue to increase, engineers will need to rely on the social and historical concepts presented in this book.

- Abstract
Energy and water are both essential commodities. The abundance of these resources is yet to transcend into adequate use, mainly because of infrastructural deficit, efficient management and utilization of both resources and exiting infrastructures. It is for this reason that international organizations like the United Nations propose and pursue sustainable development goals 6 and 7 which recommended ‘clean water and sanitation'and ‘Affordable and clean energy for all'respectively. To achieve a more comprehensive solution to these multifaceted complex problems, a roadmap with holistic techniques is needed. The energy-water nexus concept describes the interconnection between both resources with the aim of maximizing synergy and addressing trade-offs between the two. This mutual relationship between energy and water could be two ways, either water utilization for energy generation or energy expended for water purification. It could also be the case of both energy and water interdependence for co-generation. In any case, the energy-water nexus is beneficial for domestic utilization, industrial use and for agricultural efficiency through irrigation for food production. The optimal design and utilization of this nexus for techno-economic and environmental sustainability is of high essence. Key Features: Provides a pathway towards effective and efficient utilization of the nexus of critical resources like energy, water, food and environment and explores relative advantages, synergies and trade-offs. Seeks to tie the Energy-Water nexus to related aspects of optimization, control and operation of emerging technologies. Provides a detailed analysis of Energy-Water nexus control and optimization tools, current trends, and outlook. Serves as a roadmap to the delivery of adequate, affordable, reliable, sustainable clean energy and water by developing mathematical models of optimal energy mix.
