This book explores how incels use language and other semiotic resources to construct ideologies of gender and race/ethnicity. The author theorises and positions incels'performances of masculinity against a backdrop of broader social sciences and linguistic literature, and discusses some of the limitations of different lenses through which incels have previously been understood, as well some of the ethical issues involved with researching a hostile community. Corpus linguistic methods and netnographic reflections are used to explore how incels construct ideologies about gender, gendered social actors, and race/ethnicity, as well as where these concepts intersect. Taking a post-structuralist critical analysis to this community reveals a number of way ideologies towards different groups based on social identities are linguistically constructed. This book adopts a corpus-based discourse analysis approach to the study of the communicative practices of pick-up artists, offering a systematic exploration of distinct language use in an online community that uses speed-seduction practices for short-term dating and sex. Drawing on a multi-million-word corpus comprising data from online forums, social media, informational websites, and YouTube videos, the volume explores the verbal practices and narrative framing techniques that pick-up artists (PUAs) draw upon in their interactions with women and the terminology-heavy language used in teaching pick-up to foster perceptions of scientific validity. Die Diskussion um die sogenannte geschlechtergerechte Sprache wird im deutschen Sprachraum seit den 1970ern geführt. Dabei geht es um sprachliche Erscheinungen wie das generische Maskulinum, das Pronomen man, das Binnen-I (FußgängerInnen), Paarformen (Wählerinnen und Wähler), Partizipialausdrücke (Studierende, zu Fuß Gehende). Es geht aber auch darum, wie wir in der Sprache so etwas wie Geschlechtergerechtigkeit herstellen können. Fragen sind: Kann Sprache Frauen und Männern in gleicher Weise gerecht werden? Sind Frauen wirklich nur'mitgemeint'? Lässt sich das Problem mit Leitfäden für geschlechtergerechte Formulierungen lösen? Seit kurzem wird der Diskurs immer aggressiver geführt und die Vorschläge werden in den Augen der einen mutiger und denen der anderen absurder: das Student, der Dozentin bis hin zu Professorx und Studierx. Así, utilizar un lenguaje inclusivo contribuye a construir una sociedad más inclusiva, del mismo modo que utilizar un lenguaje sexista contribuye a construir una realidad más sexista y más machista. De ahí que el uso del lenguaje inclusivo sea el reflejo de una sociedad más respetuosa. The ecocide and domination of nature that is the Anthropocene does not represent the actions of all humans, but that of Man, the Western and masculine identified corporate, military, intellectual, and political class that long has masked itself as the civilized and the human. In this book, Jane Caputi looks at two major'myths'of the Earth, one ancient and one contemporary, and uses them to devise a manifesto for the survival of nature--which includes human beings--in our current ecological crisis. These are the myths of Mother Earth and the Anthropocene. The former personifies nature as a figure with the power to give life or death, and one who shares a communal destiny with all other living things. The latter myth sees humans as exceptional for exerting an implicitly sexual domination of Mother Earth through technological achievement, from the plow to synthetic biology and artificial intelligence. Much that we take for granted as inferior or taboo is based in a splitting apart of inherent unities: culture-nature; up-down, male-female; spirit-matter; mind-body; life-death; sacred-profane; reason-madness; human-beast; light-dark. The first is valued and the second reviled. This provides the framework for any number of related injustices--sexual, racial, and ecological. This book resists this pattern, in part, by deliberately putting the dirty back into the mind, the obscene back into the sacred, and vice versa. Ecofeminism and Environmental Justice argue for the significance and reality of the Earth Mother. En quoi la langue française est-elle sexiste?La langue n'est pas neutre. Les mots, les symboles, les règles qui régissent son usage marquent nos esprits et rejaillissent sur nos actes, sur nos manières d'être au monde et de le penser. Ce livre a pour but de faire connaitre l'histoire de la construction et les pratiques actuelles d'une langue qui, par sa structure patriarcale et par le (bien nommé) genre grammatical, se révèle bel et bien sexiste. Il propose d'aller plus loin que les timides réformes récentes et d'exprimer ce que voudrait dire le féminisme par les mots et la grammaire.Si l'on aborde cette question sous un angle féministe, on peut dire que notre langage est triplement problématique et ce pour une seule raison : il est genré. C'est-à-dire qu'il est imprégné d'une vision dichotomique, naturalisée et hiérarchisée du monde vivant et plus particulièrement du genre humain. This volume aims to demonstrate that the centre/periphery tension allows for a theory of gender understood as a power relationship with implications for a political analysis of language structures, language uses and linguistic resistances. All of the 12 chapters included in this volume work on understudied languages such as Moldovan, Lakota, Cantonese, Bajjika, Croatian, Hebrew, Arabic, Ciluba, Cantonese, Cypriot Greek, Korean, Malaysian, Basque and Belarusian and they all explore from the margins different dimensions of social gender in grammar. In recent years, migration has moved to the forefront of national and global debates, intensifying discussions about borders, security, identity and citizenship. In this volume we ask how language and sexuality impact these discussions: how do sexuality and language contribute toward the construction and maintenance of varying scales of borders? The issue of sexist language has been hotly debated within feminist circles since the 1960s. Previous books have tended to regard sexism in language as easy to identify and have suggested solutions to overcome and counter sexism. Sara Mills takes a fresh and more critical look at sexism in language, and argues that even in feminist circles it has become a problematic concept. Drawing on conversational and textual data collected over the last ten years, and with reference to recent research carried out in a range of different academic disciplines, Mills suggests that there are two forms of sexism - overt and indirect. Overt sexism is clear and unambiguous, while indirect sexism is based on pragmatics and the meaning and interpretation of utterances. The 1975 publication of Robin Tolmach Lakoff's Language and Woman's Place, is widely recognized as having inaugurated feminist research on the relationship between language and gender, touching off a remarkable response among language scholars, feminists, and general readers. For the past thirty years, scholars of language and gender have been debating and developing Lakoff's initial observations. Controversy over gendered pronouns, for example using the generic'he,'has been a staple of feminist arguments about patriarchal language over the last 30 years, and is certainly the most contested political issue in Western feminist linguistics. Most accounts do not extend beyond policy issues like the official institution of non-sexist language. In this volume, Anna Livia reveals continuities both before and after the sexist language refore movement and shows how the creative practices of pronoun use on the part of feminist writers had both aesthetic and political ends. Livia uses the term'pronoun envy'ironically to show that rather being a case of misguided envy, battles over gendered language are central to feminist concerns. Livia examines a broad corpus of written texts in English and French, concentrating on those texts which problematize the traditional functioning of the linguistic gender system. They range from novels and prose poems to film scripts and personal testimonies, and in time from the 19th century to the present.
