2. The Humanity of Christ : Christology in Karl Barth's Church Dogmatics
- Author
-
Paul Dafydd Jones and Paul Dafydd Jones
- Abstract
Drawing on the best English and German language scholarship to date, this book offers a novel interpretation of Barth's mature Christology. Examining the entirety of the Dogmatics, it provides a nuanced analysis of Barth's treatment of the Chalcedonian Definition, the enhypostasis/anhypostasis pairing, and various Protestant scholastic Christological distinctions; an examination of the co-inherence of Barth's doctrines of God and Christ, which contributes to current debates about Barth's doctrine of election; and a lengthy account of the Christology of Church Dogmatics IV that foregrounds Barth's understanding of Christ's human involvement in the drama of reconciliation. Throughout the text, the author shows convincingly that Barth's emphasis on Christ's divinity goes hand-in-hand with a dogmatically rich and often startling account of Christ's humanity. The text does not confine itself to the Church Dogmatics. It also situates Barth in the context of the wider Christian tradition and modern western philosophy of religion. Thus Barth is set in conversation with a wide range of thinkers, including Anselm of Canterbury, Martin Luther, John Calvin, Friedrich Schleiermacher, G. W. F. Hegel, Gottfried Thomasius, and Harry Frankfurt. In addition, the text makes a number of constructive gestures, showing a particular interest in feminist and liberationist trajectories of thought. The final chapter considers the standing of Barth's Christology today and its pertinence for theological ethics and political theology.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
This manual covers all possible aspects of managing a child with differences in sex development, an entity easily missed by the unsuspecting clinician. Managing such children is challenging due to various processes (genetic, hormonal, environmental, chromosomal, and environmental) involved in developing gonads and brain imprinting. The entity of Gender dysphoria adds further to this complexity. With a global uproar caused by the cropping up of medicolegal issues concerning sex allotment and sex of rearing, a need is felt to know about the line of approach to address the problems of management of these children, which does not stop at medical and surgical treatment. Whereas many social and legal organizations are relentlessly working for the cause of such children, there is a lack of comprehensive literature on the round management of such children, which makes the book more of an essential addition to the existing reading material. Esteemed writers give all these aspects and explain lucidly with the help of tables, figures, and diagrams.

- Abstract
This book provides a state-of-the-art review of the biology, treatment, and other critical aspects of neuroblastoma, reflecting the dramatic advances that have been achieved in understanding and management. Topics are arranged according to the book's dominant themes of the “seed” (tumor genomics, epigenetics, metabolism, and stem cells) and the “soil” (tumor microenvironment, adaptive and innate immunity, and exosomes) and how both of these influences can serve as rich targets for intervention, whether by targeted molecular therapy or immunotherapy. Therapeutic strategies that are currently in use or under consideration for the future are discussed in detail, with the focus on precision medicine. Further individual chapters are devoted to the biology and genetics of relapsed/refractory neuroblastoma and emerging methods of evaluating tumor burden. Finally, in keeping with the, albeit modest, increase in cure rates in high-risk disease, immune and cellular therapies are reviewed. This coverage of what is becoming a not-so-enigmatic tumor will appeal to a broad readership including both experimental oncologists and clinicians who care for patients with neuroblastoma.

16. Paraneoplastic Neurologic Disorders
- Author
-

- Abstract
This book extensively reviews Paraneoplastic Neurological Syndromes in light of the most recent descriptions of autoantibodies against neuronal cell surface antigens (only partly associated with paraneoplastic disorders) and the introduction of new immuno-oncological drugs that can contribute to causing diseases that are pathogenetically indistinguishable from paraneoplastic syndromes. These two new developments have not been addressed in other volumes available on the market. Section 1 focuses on immunological defense mechanisms against tumors. Besides investigating the pathogenetic mechanisms of these disorders, this section will also explore what the introduction of new drugs used in immune checkpoint inhibitor cancer therapy is teaching us in terms of immunopathogenesis. The second section will present individual syndromes (phenotypical clinical manifestations) of the CNS, PNS, NMJ and muscle. These chapters will, however, be preceded by an epidemiological analysis and a chapter describing the clinical approach to patients with these disorders. Consideration will also be given in specific chapters to general therapeutic strategies and the techniques used to search for diagnostically relevant autoantibodies. Presentation of the individual diseases will be followed by a third section investigating the role of antibody markers, presented in three chapters differentiating cytoplasmic, nuclear and neuronal cell surface reactivities. The innovative component of the final two sections compared to previously published volumes lies in their presentation of the profile of paraneoplastic diseases by tumor type. Special attention will be given to thymoma (involved particularly with novel antibodies against surface antigens), and neuroendocrine tumours, which are as yet comparatively unexplored in the literature. Lastly, a clinical update will be provided on gynecological, hematological and testicular malignancies. The last section will address side effects of the new immuno-oncological drugs increasingly used in cancer therapy. The high number of neurological complications that occur when tumor checkpoints are inhibited against immune defences provides the ideal experimental model for understanding the pathogenesis of these diseases. - Profiles paraneoplastic diseases by tumor type - Identifies the pathogenetic mechanisms of PNS and provides epidemiological analysis - Presents individual syndromes of the CNS, PNS, NMJ, and muscle - Investigates the role of antibody markers - Differentiates cytoplasmic, nuclear, and neuronal cell surface reactivities - Discusses immune-oncological drugs causing diseases that are indistinguishable from PNS - Reviews therapeutic strategies and clinical approach to PNS patients

- Abstract
Next-generation DNA and RNA sequencing has revolutionized biology and medicine. With sequencing costs continuously dropping and our ability to generate large datasets rising, data analysis becomes more important than ever. Next-Generation Sequencing Data Analysis walks readers through next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis step by step for a wide range of NGS applications. For each NGS application, this book covers topics from experimental design, sample processing, sequencing strategy formulation, to sequencing read quality control, data preprocessing, read mapping or assembly, and more advanced stages that are specific to each application. Major applications include: RNA-seq: Both bulk and single cell (separate chapters) Genotyping and variant discovery through whole genome/exome sequencing Clinical sequencing and detection of actionable variants De novo genome assembly ChIP-seq to map protein-DNA interactions Epigenomics through DNA methylation sequencing Metagenome sequencing for microbiome analysis Before detailing the analytic steps for each of these applications, the book presents introductory cellular and molecular biology as a refresher mostly for data scientists, the ins and outs of widely used NGS platforms, and an overview of computing needs for NGS data management and analysis. The book concludes with a chapter on the changing landscape of NGS technologies and data analytics. The second edition of this book builds on the well-received first edition by providing updates to each chapter. Two brand new chapters have been added to meet rising data analysis demands on single-cell RNA-seq and clinical sequencing. The increasing use of long-read sequencing has also been reflected in all NGS applications. This book discusses concepts and principles that underlie each analytic step, along with software tools for implementation. It highlights key features of the tools while omitting tedious details to provide an easy-to-follow guide for practitioners in life sciences, bioinformatics, biostatistics, and data science. Tools introduced in this book are open source and freely available.

- Abstract
This book provides a comprehensive overview of the relationship between pantheism and ecology, particularly considering different cultural approaches and diverse religious, theological, and philosophical traditions. Environmental ethics arises from the dangerousness and harmfulness of human beings with respect to nonhuman species and, more generally, with respect to the environment. A common starting point for environmental ethics standpoints is that human beings are responsible for damaging nature. The famous four laws of ecology drafted by Barry Commoner precisely express this guilt on the part of human beings, who very often voluntarily violate the behavioral indications that emerge from nature itself. These aspects concern environmental ethics outlooks. Eco-theology, then, takes a further step: not only do we damage the ecosystem but also, as many authors suggest, when we humans destroy the natural world, we are wounding God. Such an idea implies a possible coincidence of God with the natural world –or the ecosystem. From this assumption, different questions may emerge: what is the kind of coincidence between God and the natural world? Are God and the ecosystem coextensive? If so, are we re-sacralizing the natural world and grounding intrinsic values in theological postulates and statements? These questions lead us to reconsider the cosmological assumptions that ground our environmental judgements, from theology to different religious traditions and cultures to philosophical worldviews. In particular, we will focus on the cosmological assumptions of pantheism (considering its differences with panentheism), discussing the symmetrical (or asymmetrical) relationships between God and the finite ways in which God manifests Godself. In this regard, the book is divided into three main parts: in the first part, the question of pantheism is approached from different traditions and with a special focus on the main thinkers in the history of thought, from Greek Stoicism to the present day. In the second part, some current ecological concerns are considered in relation to pantheistic cosmology: the authors will deepen issues from the discussion of the different “pan-conceptions” to the problem of evil, to Anthropocene. Finally, in the third part, the different chapters will focus on ethical issues in the field of the current environmental crisis with a huge connection with the pantheistic cosmologies. This book is oriented to a wide public, interested in environmental issues and looking for an approach from different cultures and traditions. Evidently, due to its “academic” nature, this book is also intended to be a great support for researchers interested in eco-theology and, more specifically, in the relationship between pantheism and ecology. It is not, in this sense, a “classic” book on environmental ethics, but a book that delves into the fundamentals of environmental philosophy, privileging the Ibero-American approach.

- Abstract
This book covers the wide range of malignant illness and where they intersect with environmental factors. Chapters explore the importance of acknowledging and dealing with the societal implications of anthropogenic climate change, a wider appreciation of the many ways that human industry and activity is changing the environment and contributing to human disease is imperative. In addition to how particular exposures relate to certain malignancies, the book explores historical events that led to the development of cancers in order to help policy makers and patient advocates understand where we have been when considering future initiatives. It also discusses the disparities involved in environmental toxin exposure and look at these cancers in light of the need to reduce cancer disparities. Given the ongoing ecological crisis from climate change and expanding human population and industrialization, this book examines pollution and ecological change to impacts and where human disease can be prevented.

- Abstract

- Abstract
From the closing decades of the eighteenth century, German theology has been a major intellectual force within modern western thought, closely connected to important developments in idealism, romanticism, historicism, phenomenology, and hermeneutics. Despite its influential legacy, however, no recent attempts have sought to offer an overview of its history and development. Oxford History of Modern German Theology, Vol. I: 1781-1848, the first of a three-volume series, provides the most comprehensive multi-authored overview of German theology from the period from 1781-1848. Kaplan and Vander Schel cover categories frequently omitted from earlier overviews of the time period, such as the place of Judaism in modern German society, race and religion, and the impact of social history in shaping theological debate. Rather than focusing on individual figures alone, Oxford History of Modern German Theology, Vol. I: 1781-1848 describes the narrative arc of the period by focusing on broader intellectual and cultural movements, ongoing debates, and significant events. It furthermore provides a historical introduction to each of the chronological subsections that divides the book. Moreover, unlike previous efforts to introduce this time period and geographical region, the volume offers chapters covering such previously neglected topics as religious orders, the influence of Romantic art, secularism, religious freedom, and important but overlooked scholarly initiatives such as the Corpus Reformatorum. Attention to such matters will make this volume an invaluable repository of scholarship and knowledge and an indispensable reference resource for decades to come.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Radiotherapy Planning is the new title in the Oxford Specialist Handbooks in Oncology series. It provides a comprehensive guide to modern radiotherapy practice, firmly based on unchanging principles. The author discusses advanced radiotherapy techniques as well as simpler field-based arrangements, so that this handbook can be used globally for clinical practice, including countries with limited resources. The site-specific chapters are structured in two parts. Firstly, current treatment approaches are discussed, with particular attention to the relevant underlying principles to ensure it remains appropriate and useful despite changes in other cancer treatments. The second part of each chapter discusses the most important clinical trials which have informed the current approaches to treatment at the time of publication. In addition, there is a section on imaging features of different tumours, which is useful for clinicians to choose appropriate images for target volume delineation. This handbook will give an accessible introduction to new trainees in the specialty, and it will continue to encourage in all clinical oncologists logical thinking, the ability to ask challenging questions, appropriate analysis of outcomes, and delivery of treatment assessed according to its clinical benefit to patients and its academic rigour.

- Abstract
The Spirit of American Liberal Theology is an interpretation of the entire U.S. American tradition of liberal theology. A highly condensed and far-more-accessible summary of Gary Dorrien's three-volume trilogy, The Making of American Liberal Theology (Westminster John Knox Press 2001, 2003, and 2006), Dorrien here presses the argument that the most abundant, diverse, and persistent tradition of liberal theology is the one that blossomed in the United States and is still refashioning itself. While discussions of English and German liberalism persist, new material includes expanded treatment of the Black social gospel, the Universalists, developments into early 2020s, and a robust expression of the author's post-Hegelian liberal-liberationist perspective.

Paul Friedländer and Paul Friedländer
- Abstract

- Abstract
Challenging Bruce McCormack's paradigm of post-Kantian Barth scholarship, this book builds on the interpretative model that Sigurd Baark developed in 2018. This model interprets Barth's innovative adoption of an Anselmian mode of theological speculation, against the intellectual-historical background of the idealist tradition of speculative metaphysics that culminated in Hegel. This book argues that Barth adopted the Anselmian mode of speculation in which immediate self-identity between subject, object, and act is found in the triune God alone, while the speculative identity that enables human knowledge of God is none other than the identity between God-in-and-for-Godself and God-for-us. Exploring the nationalistic dimension of speculative metaphysics in 19th-century Germany, Tseng identifies this as an important aspect of the context of Barth's development of a Christocentric form of speculative theology.

- Abstract
Informed by the Biopsychosocial Model, this Encyclopedia of Child and Adolescent Health examines multiple aspects of child and adolescent development and physical and mental health. According to the Biopsychosocial Model, health is determined by the reciprocal interactions between biological (e.g., genetics, physical development, family health history), psychological (e.g., mental health, identity developmental, attitudes), and social (e.g., family, peers, school, social supports) factors. This theory posits that each one of these factors alone is not sufficient to understand health; instead, it is important to understand how these interactive components ultimately influence health outcomes. In addition to the Biopsychosocial Model, this Encyclopedia of Child and Adolescent Health has a translational approach. Each section and all applicable entries include a discussion of prevention or intervention efforts that can inform health and health promotion, and prevent health risks. - Presents a comprehensive review of current child and adolescent research, along with critical insights into the future direction of the field, including translation and prevention - Includes concise, authoritative chapters that are expertly authored make this an easy-to-read, reliable reference resource - Provides a clear thematic structure that allows for easy exploration across the discipline's different sub-fields. - Helps readers find their topics of interest, all of which are contextualized and linked to relevant literature
