- Abstract
Following on from the success of his three previous books, The Pocket Watch, The Verge Pocket Watch and The American Pocket Watch, Chris Barrow has produced another clear and concise guide, aimed again at the enthusiastic amateur. This book concentrates on one particular type of watch, namely the English fusee lever. It combines a brief history of the development of the watch with a step-by-step manual covering the dismantling, cleaning, repair and reassembly of a variety of English fusee lever movements made during the nineteenth century. If you have acquired a pocket watch of this type, and would like to investigate its workings, perhaps with a view to getting it going again, then this book will help you step by step to reach that goal. It will also give you a better appreciation of the beauty of both the desing and technology of the English fusee lever pocket watch.

- Abstract
In this unique study, Stephen Glynn demonstrates that Kate Bush's work, in both sound and vision, has long been influenced and characterised by, and at times aimed at, film and television media. The volume explores in depth Bush's ‘music of allusion'and analyses first the significance of film and television references throughout the lyrics and settings of her songs, beginning with her breakthrough hit ‘Wuthering Heights'. It also surveys the shaping presence of film and television in the look, narrative and artistry of her music videos, including the examination of celebrated works such as ‘Cloudbusting'and ‘Hounds of Love'. Finally, the book assesses Bush's most intensive cinematic undertaking, her 1993 album The Red Shoes, with its evident homage to the 1948 film of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, and its concurrent visual reworking as Bush's sole film venture, The Line, The Cross & The Curve. Thus, with its deployment across music, video and film, Glynn demonstrates the centrality of Kate Bush's cinephilia to her work.Accessible yet academically rigorous, Kate Bush and the Moving Image is a stand-out study of the iconic singer-songwriter's discography and cinematic ventures. It will appeal to both students and scholars of Film, Television, Media, Cultural and Popular Music Studies.

- Abstract
This book analyses aspects of the material culture of early modern Greece from an object-based perspective, using surviving artefacts from that period as primary sources.A printed book, a wine jug, an ecclesiastical embroidery, and a pocket watch are used as entry points to examine the consumer practices of the emerging Greek bourgeoisie under Ottoman rule in the long eighteenth century. The acquisition and usage of novel products – especially imported ones – by Greeks was connected to personal expression, identity building, and self-determination in the context of the Enlightenment. The enjoyment of innovative artefacts opened new horizons to them and facilitated their individual and collective empowerment. The originality of the book lies in its eclectic and interdisciplinary approach towards early modern Greek material culture, an under-researched topic. The study is embedded within contemporary discourses on transnational trade, the materiality of everyday life, pleasurable consumption, and the negotiation of identities. This volume will appeal to students and scholars of early modern and modern Greek history, Ottoman history, European history, material culture, history of technology, museum studies, and cultural heritage studies, as well as museum professionals, collectors, and the wider educated public.

- Abstract
With the rise of a knowledge-based economy a change in the approach to the role of employees has come. This emphasised the pivotal role of human capital in business success, leading to a'war for talent,'compelling organisations to enhance efforts to attract top talent. Employer branding has thus grown in significance. Initially rooted in human resources management, employer branding now incorporates interdisciplinary approaches combining brand, image, reputation and its impact on competitive advantage and strategic goals. Employers are increasingly viewing employer branding as crucial for attracting talent.Marked by a talent shortage, the IT industry is emblematic of employer branding's importance as it faces unique challenges, which include the lengthy and costly process of training IT professionals and the globalised labour market driven by remote work. The COVID-19 pandemic further reshaped labour market dynamics, intensifying the need for effective employer branding.Strategic Employer Branding for IT Companies: An Interdisciplinary Perspective focuses on both theoretical analyses and practical tools for effective employer branding. The book proposes an interdisciplinary approach in a strategic context, addressing employer branding's role in competitive advantage. The book: Reviews definitions and models of employer branding Identifies interdisciplinary areas supporting employer branding strategies Presents a model for a strategic approach to employer branding Analyses in global terms the IT sector in Poland as a case Provides practices, recommendations and tools for employer branding The book's highlight is a proprietary employer branding model for the IT industry. Bridging theory and practice, this model offers valuable insights for international stakeholders, enriching academic literature and supporting strategic employer branding implementation. This book is a contemporary guide for researchers, practitioners and students on how to develop robust employer branding strategies.

- Abstract
A fantasy roleplaying game of hope and heroism in which gifted mortals and Fay creatures fight across time in an eternal battle for the soul of the countryside.Through the Hedgerow is a fantasy roleplaying game of time travel and supernatural adventure set in the hidden world of the countryside. As Knights of the Briar Company, you are Champions of the Light, charged with protecting the soul and magic of the land against the agents of the Dark, who seek only destruction and chaos. This eternal battle is fought throughout history, from the war-torn Dark Ages and 17th Century to the upheaval of the Industrial Revolution and World War Two. As one of the Fay – sorcerous birds, animated scarecrows, intelligent spiders, and other beings – you may be sworn to defend humanity. Or, as a mortal marked by destiny and plucked from your own time, you might be caught up in this struggle. One way or another, you must step through the hedgerow to face the Darkness…Through the Hedgerow uses an innovative Checks & Challenges system that encourages players to contribute to the unfolding narrative, and which makes wits, imagination, charm, and mysticism as important to overcoming problems as combat. Seek out powerful magical treasures, safeguard legendary locations, and outwit and outfight the servants of the Dark – wicked Fay lords, fanatical witch hunters, scheming hags, and the brooding Raven Margrave whose undead hordes bring death to the land…

- Abstract
Orchestrating Warfighting provides a detailed and wide-ranging examination of the employment of corps and divisions from the First World War through to the early twenty-first century.Division and corps formations have been at the forefront of the British Army's prosecution of war since 1914. They constituted the major command and organisational elements that underpinned the conduct of large-scale warfighting on land. Divisions and corps were of central importance to the conduct of the First and Second World Wars, the maintenance of a conventional deterrence posture during the Cold War, and were also employed in major confrontations since 1945, including the Korean War and two Gulf Wars. The British Army of the early twenty-first century still retains two divisional formations alongside the British-led Allied Rapid Reaction Corps within NATO.Orchestrating Warfighting examines British, Dominion, and imperial corps and divisions, taking part in the total wars of the first half of the twentieth century and smaller scale conflicts since 1945. It throws new light on questions of command, generalship, and the management of battles and campaigns across a diverse range of theatres. Orchestrating Warfighting is of interest to historians of the British Army, operational military history, and modern war.

The papers in this volume, which include three left unpublished at the time of Professor Offler's death in 1991, cover the period from the 9th to the 14th centuries; They well exemplify Offler's command of historical narrative and his technical skills as a historian. Their main concern is with the northernmost counties of England, in particular with the diocese of Durham and the activities of its bishops, but some cross the border into Scottish history. Many provide a careful evaluation of crucial documentary evidence for the period; others give vivid reconstructions of particular personalities or events.

- Abstract
First Published in 1974, The Black Douglas is both exciting and informative, is based on fourteenth century chronicles and documents, and is the first full account of Douglas's eventful and dangerous career up to his celebrated death carrying Bruce's heart into battle against the Moors. James of Douglas, Robert Bruce's friend and lieutenant, was known variously to the English as Black Douglas (after the colour of his hair) and to the Scots as Good Douglas, for his mighty success against the English invader.A baron's heir but, due to the war, orphaned and beggared in boyhood, Douglas joined Bruce with the object of recovering his heritage. The author shows how he achieved this goal within two years, after a grim period of hunted outlawry, and in doing so found that the trade adopted from necessity had become his calling in life. This volume reveals that he was not only a great fighting man- probably the most professional soldier of his day- but a shrewd and realistic commander whose talents contributed greatly to the eventual triumph of the Scots in the Scottish War of Independence. This is an interesting reference work for students and general readers interested in the history of Scotland.

- Abstract
Książka Dyscyplina naukowa i tożsamość naukowca stanowi kolejny rezultat zainteresowań badawczych autora dotyczących uniwersytetu. Pierwsza z nich poświęcona jest następującym zagadnieniom: roli dyscyplin w strukturze nauki i uniwersytetu, esencjalistycznemu i konstruktywistycznemu podejściu do dyscyplin, wymiarom terytorialności dyscyplin, identyfikacjom dyscyplinarnym i socjalizacji w dyscyplinę, statusowi naukowca w dyscyplinach i jego źródłom, podziałom i hierarchizacji dyscyplin, interdyscyplinarności, dyscypliny humanistyczne vs. ścisłe i przyrodnicze, książce w naukach humanistycznych i społecznych, konsekwencji digitalizacji książek naukowych, językowi angielskiemu jako językowi globalnej nauki, konfrontacji paradygmatów w nauce współczesnej, przypisom i uprawianiu nauki. W części drugiej książki omówione są dyscyplinarne studia przypadków: świetność i upadek astrologii i alchemii, pseudonauka Łysenkoizmu, status i estetyka matematyki, kontrowersje wokół dyscyplinarnego statusu pedagogiki i kryminologii, ekonomiczny imperializm, męskość i kobiecość w fizyce.

- Arthurian romances--History and criticism
- Abstract
Geoffrey of Monmouth's immensely popular Latin prose Historia regum Britanniae (c. 1138), followed by French verse translations – Wace's Roman de Brut (1155) and anonymous versions including the Royal Brut, the Munich, Harley, and Egerton Bruts (12th -14th c.), initiated Arthurian narratives of many genres throughout the ages, alongside Welsh, English, and other traditions. Arthur, Origins, Identities and the Legendary History of Britain addresses how Arthurian histories incorporating the British foundation myth responded to images of individual or collective identity and how those narratives contributed to those identities. What cultural, political or psychic needs did these Arthurian narratives meet and what might have been the origins of those needs? And how did each text contribute to a “larger picture” of Arthur, to the construction of a myth that still remains so compelling today?

- Abstract
This book comprehensively examines the complex relationship between forests and climate change from a biological perspective. It explores the effects of climate change, such as rising temperatures, greenhouse gas emissions, changing rainfall patterns, droughts, and cold spells, on individual trees and forest ecosystems. It considers how climate change affects forest structure, function, composition, and biodiversity, and the adaptive strategies forests employ to cope with changing conditions. The book focuses on understanding the adaptive capacity of forests and explores different mechanisms at stand and ecosystem levels that enable forests to respond to changing climatic conditions. It discusses how forests acclimate and adapt to new climates by modulating growth rates, morphology, phenology, physiology, biochemistry, and species composition. The role of genetic diversity and evolutionary processes in shaping forest resilience and adaptation is also explored. The book also explores potential mitigation strategies to reduce the impacts of climate change. Besides, this book discusses the ecological principles and the involvement of local communities in conservation and restoration efforts as alternative strategies to enhance the resilience of forest ecosystems against climate change. The book provides practical recommendations for policy makers, forest managers, and conservation practitioners to develop effective climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies in forest landscapes. This book serves as a valuable resource and a guide for researchers, students, and professionals in various fields to protect and sustainably manage vital ecosystems in a rapidly changing climate.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Chantries were religious institutions endowed with land, goods and money. At their heart was the performance of a daily mass for the spiritual benefit of their founders, and the souls of all faithful dead. To Church reformers, they exemplified some of medieval Catholicism's most egregious errors; but to the orthodox they offered opportunities to influence what occurred in an unknowable afterlife. The eleven essays presented here lead the reader through the earliest manifestations of the chantry, the origins and development of ‘stone-cage'chapels, royal patronage of commemorative art and architecture, the chantry in the late medieval parish, the provision of music and textiles, and a series of specific chantries created for William of Wykeham, Edmund Audley, Thomas Spring and Abbot Islip, to the eventual history and the cultural consequences of their suppression in the mid-16th century.

- Abstract
This book focuses on untapped marine resources for production of biofuel, biogas, bio-fertilizers, nutraceuticals, pharmaceutical and other value-added products. The applications of marine biomass and microbes in human welfare, whether individual or synergistic use, for waste management, climate change mitigation, eco-restoration, and environment protection have also been covered. This book also looks at the solutions to the problem of fossil fuel, which is one of the major sources of environmental pollution and global warming. In this context, marine-based biorefinery represents a promising approach to mitigate climate change as bio-based products are good alternatives to fossil-based fuels and synthetic chemicals due to their capacity for net-negative carbon emissions. This book is a reference material for researchers and scientists working in the field of biorefinery, pharmaceutical industry, bioremediation of contaminants and carbon neutrality for environmental safety.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Illuminates how the ceremonial dimension of death and the succession reflected both Scottish royal identity and a broader culture of ceremony. To date, scholarly attention to royal ceremony in Scotland from the Middle Ages into the early modern period has been rather haphazard, with few attempts to explore how these crucial moments for the representation of royal authority. This monograph provides a long durée analysis of the ceremonial cycle of death and succession associated with Scottish kingship from the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries, including the final century of the Canmore dynasty, the crisis of the Bruce-Balliol conflict, and the emergence and consolidation of the Stewart family up to the funeral of last monarch buried in Scotland, James V, in 1543. Using a broad range of primary sources, including financial records and material culture, many of them previously untapped, it addresses key questions about kingship and power, the function of ceremony in legitimising royal authority, its significance in relation to the practical exercising of power, and evidence for Scottish similarities and distinctiveness within wider European contexts.

- Abstract
Was Whitby in Yorkshire the home of the earliest English woman writer? Did Roman Britain see Christians martyred at Leicester? Was St Patrick born in Somerset, not far from Bath? How in the age of Arthur did a saint rid Cornwall of a troublesome dragon? How were a Dark-Age Scottish queen and her lover saved from ignominy by a ring, miraculously found in the belly of a fish? These and other questions are answered in this book. Breaking spectacular new ground on Christianity in early Britain and beyond, it will be essential reading for both historians and the general reader concerned with writing by women, as its demonstration of an eighth-century life of Pope Gregory as the work of an unidentified nun underlines the perennial difficulties of female writers in a world dominated by men.

- Abstract
‘Click'reactions are a unique class of versatile synthetic tools used in organic and polymer chemistry to develop new materials. The high efficiency of the click reactions, combined with their easy and straightforward execution, have made them an inevitable tool for the development of a variety of advanced polymer materials with tailor-made architectures and stimuli-responsive features. This book aims to give a comprehensive overview and introduction on the use of ‘click'chemistry in polymer science, including ‘click,'‘click-like,'and reversible ‘click'(or ‘un-click') approaches in the design of macromolecules. Moreover, it will outline recent progress in utilizing different ‘click chemistry'in the development of functional polymer materials for various applications, such as self-healing, hydrophobic, shape-memory, and bio-based materials. Written and edited by leading experts in the field, chapters cover the use of different ‘click'reactions, like azide-alkyne, Diels-Alder, Alder-ene, thiol-X, electrophilic substitution, and trans (esterification/amination) reactions, in polymer science. It will also cover the concept of ‘trans-click'reactions, which have come to the foreground on account of improving the exchangeable efficiency of covalent bonds in covalent adaptable polymer materials. Recognizing the present state-of-the-art, this book will be a suitable reference handbook with a valuable resource of information for students of all levels, for learning and teaching endeavors, and for researchers and scientists working on the next generation of advanced polymeric materials.

- Abstract
Polarization in the United States has been on the rise for several decades. In this context, few observers expect politics today to stop “at the water's edge,” as the old cliché goes. But key questions about the relationship between polarization and US foreign policy remain to be fully answered. To what extent are American ideas about foreign policy now polarized along partisan lines? How is polarization changing the foreign policy behavior of the US Congress and President? And how is polarization altering the effectiveness of US foreign policy and influencing America's role in the world? This edited volume explores these questions and more, bringing together existing knowledge as well as considering how the political dynamics and execution of US foreign policy may evolve in the years ahead.

- Abstract
This book describes sustainable aquaculture ingredients and additives uncovered in Africa and Asia. It also discusses current aquaculture research practices on alternative protein, carbohydrate, lipid, mineral, vitamin, and feed additives. It further demonstrates how aquaculture practices could be a feasible and cost-effective venture, capable of producing products in an environmentally sustainable manner. The aquaculture industry is suffering from scarcity of sustainable feedstuffs, particularly protein and oil components, which play an important role in the nutritional requirements of many aquaculture species. The availability of components such as fish meal, fish oil, and other synthetic feed additives has rendered aquaculture operations unsustainable, particularly in terms of cost. Therefore, the quest to replace such unsustainable components is developing in Africa and Asia. This book helps aquaculture farmers, researchers, the aquafeed industry, investors, students, lawmakers, and other stakeholders in the aquaculture field to comprehend scientific-based sustainable feed ingredients and additives in aquaculture from an African and Asian viewpoint.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Gender influenced every aspect of life in medieval and early modern Scotland. This collection illuminates how gendered expectations and experiences shaped people's relationships with where they lived, what they believed and how they exercised power. Showcasing new work by an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars, essays in this collection draw upon a wide range of sources to present familiar topics in original ways, while opening up unexpected vistas for our historical sight. Essays range from innovative interpretations of famous people and well-known events to examinations of the thoughts and activities of ordinary Scots, with consideration also for how people from the past are publicly commemorated today. Together, they demonstrate the centrality of gender in the shaping of Scottish history.

- Abstract
Psychoactive substance use ranks among the five top risk factors contributing to the global burden of disease. Substance use disorders can cause, mimic, underlie, or complicate a large number of medical and psychiatric conditions. In recent years, there has been a rapid increase in non-substance forms of addiction such as gambling, internet gaming, and various other behavioural addictions. The ability to diagnose addictive disorders and initiate appropriate management is a responsibility for all health professionals. Addiction Medicine, now in its third edition and published in the renowned Oxford Medical Handbook series, is the result of many years'preparation by a group of colleagues who are clinicians, teachers, and researchers in the addictive disorders field. The handbook is a contemporary, broadly-based, and clinically grounded text that summarises the scientific basis and practice of addiction medicine. It provides practical guidance on clinical management but with a sound background of pharmacology, neurobiology, psychology, and epidemiology and public health. It seeks to provide approaches to minimising harm from psychoactive substances and addictive behaviours, both at an individual and a societal level. The new edition has been expanded greatly. In addition to the behavioural addictions, it covers a broader range of psychoactive substances. There are new chapters on Screening and brief interventions and on Digital health approaches. It also continues to be international in scope, with the editors and contributors drawn from over 30 countries worldwide. The handbook is intended as a concise and practical guide for students, trainees, and qualified practitioners of medicine, nursing, psychology, and other health professionals. In particular, it is designed for students and post-graduate trainees and fellows in addiction medicine, internal medicine, psychiatry, emergency medicine, pain management, gastroenterology, and general medical (family physician) practice. It is also useful and relevant to nurses, particularly those working as specialists in addictive disorders, clinical psychologists, psychologists and counsellors, and social workers and for staff in multidisciplinary agencies which provide help, support, and treatment for people with addictive disorders. This unparalleled guide contains everything you need to know to assist in the assessment, diagnosis, and clinical management of patients with substance use and related addictive disorders

- Abstract
The previous collection by Constant J. Mews focused on the work and thought of Peter Abelard (1079-1142); the present volume looks more broadly at Abelard's intellectual and religious context in the Latin West, and at his teacher, the controversial nominalist philosopher and theologian, Roscelin of Compiègne. It opens with surveys of educational theory and practice in the 12th-century schools. Mews next explores the widespread movement in the period which sought to explain religious belief in terms accessible to reason, and the background to accusations of heresy made by monks troubled by new attempts to interpret Christian belief, both within and outside a school environment. Five related studies then deal with previously unedited texts by Roscelin of Compiègne and St Anselm that throw new light on the importance of the philosopher and theologian who exercised a major influence on Peter Abelard.
