This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the ​First Workshop on Artificial Intelligence over Infrared Images for Medical Applications, AIIIMA 2022, and the First Workshop on Medical Image Assisted Biomarker Discovery, MIABID 2022, both held in conjunction with MICCAI 2022, Singapore, during September 18 and 22, 2022.For MIABID 2022, 7 papers from 10 submissions were accepted for publication. This workshop created a forum to discuss this specific sub-topic at MICCAI and promote this novel area of research among the research community that has the potential to hugely impact our society.For AIIIMA 2022, 10 papers from 15 submissions were accepted for publication. The first workshop on AIIIMA aimed to create a forum to discuss this specific sub-topic of AI over Infrared Images for Medical Applications at MICCAI and promote this novel area of research that has the potential to hugely impact our society, among the research community.

Abstract

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th International Workshop on Clinical Image-Based Procedures, CLIP 2021, Second MICCAI Workshop on Distributed and Collaborative Learning, DCL 2021, First MICCAI Workshop, LL-COVID19, First Secure and Privacy-Preserving Machine Learning for Medical Imaging Workshop and Tutorial, PPML 2021, held in conjunction with MICCAI 2021, in October 2021. The workshops were planned to take place in Strasbourg, France, but were held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.CLIP 2021 accepted 9 papers from the 13 submissions received. It focuses on holistic patient models for personalized healthcare with the goal to bring basic research methods closer to the clinical practice. For DCL 2021, 4 papers from 7 submissions were accepted for publication. They deal with machine learning applied to problems where data cannot be stored in centralized databases and information privacy is a priority. LL-COVID19 2021 accepted 2 papers out of 3 submissions dealing with the use of AI models in clinical practice. And for PPML 2021, 2 papers were accepted from a total of 6 submissions, exploring the use of privacy techniques in the medical imaging community.

Abstract

One of the central concepts in rabbinic Judaism is the notion of the Evil Inclination, which appears to be related to similar concepts in ancient Christianity and the wider late antique world. The precise origins and understanding of the idea, however, are unknown. This volume traces the development of this concept historically in Judaism and assesses its impact on emerging Christian thought concerning the origins of sin. The chapters, which cover a wide range of sources including the Bible, the Ancient Versions, Qumran, Pseudepigrapha and Apocrypha, the Targums, and rabbinic and patristic literature, advance our understanding of the intellectual exchange between Jews and Christians in classical Antiquity, as well as the intercultural exchange between these communities and the societies in which they were situated.

Abstract

Goy: Israel's Others and the Birth of the Gentile traces the development of the term and category of the goy from the Bible to rabbinic literature. Adi Ophir and Ishay Rosen-Zvi show that the category of the goy was born much later than scholars assume; in fact not before the first century CE. They explain that the abstract concept of the gentile first appeared in Paul's Letters. However, it was only in rabbinic literature that this category became the center of a stable and long standing structure that involved God, the Halakha, history, and salvation. The authors narrate this development through chronological analyses of the various biblical and post biblical texts (including the Dead Sea scrolls, the New Testament and early patristics, the Mishnah, and rabbinic Midrash) and synchronic analyses of several discursive structures. Looking at some of the goy's instantiations in contemporary Jewish culture in Israel and the United States, the study concludes with an examination of the extraordinary resilience of the Jew/goy division and asks how would Judaism look like without the gentile as its binary contrast.

Talmudic Transgressions is a collection of essays on rabbinic literature and related fields in response to the boundary-pushing scholarship of Daniel Boyarin. This work is an attempt to transgress boundaries in various ways, since boundaries differentiate social identities, literary genres, legal practices, or diasporas and homelands. Abstract

This perceptive study investigates the different ways in which the state deals with various social groups through the mechanisms of space. By means of case studies involving three social groups within Israel's multicultural society - the Sephardim, the Bedouin-Arab minority and the ultra-Orthodox community of Jerusalem - the different roles played by political space in legal analysis are revealed and analyzed. Issachar Rosen-Zvi then unearths the unifying logic underlying the disparate legal treatment of political space, brought to light by the case studies. The law treats political space differently depending on the social group involved, an attitude that, the author argues, can be traced back to early Zionist thinking. He concludes that a reform of local government law is required, to correct the segregated system of political space and the separate and unequal distribution of political power and economic resources that accompany it.

Abstract

This study analyzes the specific textual formation of Mishna Sotah. Diverging significantly from its origins in the book of Numbers, the Mishnaic ritual was traditionally read by scholars as an'ancient Mishna', narrating an actual ritual practiced in the second temple. In contrast to this generally accepted view, this book claims that while Sotah does contain some traditions, its overall composition has a clear ideological and academic form. Furthermore, comparisonswith parallel Tannaitic sources reveal the ideological redaction, which carefully selected only those opinions which support its rewriting of the ritual as a public punitive ritual, while rejecting all reservations and opposition to its specific punitive character – even ignoring the possibility of innocence of the suspected adulteress. The author's groundbreaking conclusion is that, regardless of the form the real ritual did or did not take at the temple, the specificMishnaic ritual was (re)invented by the rabbis in the second century C.E. From its very inception, it was purely textual, reflecting rabbinic imagination rather than memory.

36. The Rite that Was Not Temple, Midrash and Gender in Tractate Sotah

Abstract

This book examines the place of the Temple and its rituals in early Rabbinic (Tannaitic) discourse, through a specific case study: the reconstruction of the ritual of the suspected adulteress (Num 5:11-32) in Mishna Sotah. Numbers chapter five describes a ritual performed to test suspicions raised by a husband regarding his wife's sexual fidelity. The jealous husband is required to bring his wife to the priest in the Temple, where she is subjected to an ordeal of a character unparalleled in Biblical law. The Mishnaic ritual differs significantly from the Biblical one, both in detail and overall character. The private priestly ritual becomes, in the Mishna, a grand public event (in which the Mishna invites “whoever wants to stare at her” to come and stare) directed by the Rabbis themselves. A new demand for objective evidence, to comply with standard Talmudic rules of evidence, is introduced. A number of procedures have been added at the beginning and during the course of the ritual. Even the conclusion of the ritual, the actual result of the test, has been radically altered. Why were these measures added to the Sotah ritual? Where were they taken from? How do they function in the context of Mishna Sotah as a whole? How do they relate to the Biblical ritual, on the one hand, and to the reality of the temple on the other? And, finally, what led the Rabbis to reinvent a ritual already described at length in the Bible? Through specific textual engagement with these questions the book suggests a new look at the Tannaitic discourse and the place of the temple in it.
