This monograph develops the theory of pre-Riesz spaces, which are the partially ordered vector spaces that embed order densely into Riesz spaces. Concepts from Riesz space theory such as disjointness, ideals, and bands are extended to pre-Riesz spaces. The analysis revolves around embedding techniques, including the Riesz completion and the functional representation. In the same spirit, norms and topologies on a pre-Riesz space and their extensions to the Riesz completion are examined. The generalized concepts are used to investigate disjointness preserving operators on pre-Riesz spaces and related notions. The monograph presents recent results as well as being an accessible introduction to the theory of partially ordered vector spaces and positive operators. Control of Wave and Beam PDEs is a concise, self-contained introduction to Riesz bases in Hilbert space and their applications to control systems described by partial differential equations (PDEs). The authors discuss classes of systems that satisfy the spectral determined growth condition, the problem of stability, and the relationship between fulfillment of the condition and stability. Using the (fundamental) Riesz-basis property, the book shows how controllability, observability, stability, etc., can be derived for a linear system. The text provides a crash course in the mathematical theory of Riesz bases so that a reader can quickly understand this powerful method of dealing with linear PDEs. It introduces several important methods for achieving the Riesz basis property through spectral analysis, as well as new approaches including treatment of systems coupled through boundary weak connections. The book moves from a discussion of mathematical preliminaries through bases in Hilbert Spaces to applications to Euler–Bernoulli and Rayleigh beam equations and hybrid systems. The final chapter expands the use of the book's methods to applications in other systems. Many typical examples, representing physical systems, are discussed in the text. The book is suitable not only for applied mathematicians seeking a powerful tool to understand control systems, but also for control engineers interested in the mathematics of PDE systems.

Most classes of operators that are not isomorphic embeddings are characterized by some kind of a “smallness” condition. Narrow operators are those operators defined on function spaces that are “small” at {-1,0,1}-valued functions, e.g. compact operators are narrow. The original motivation to consider such operators came from theory of embeddings of Banach spaces, but since then they were also applied to the study of the Daugavet property and to other geometrical problems of functional analysis. The question of when a sum of two narrow operators is narrow, has led to deep developments of the theory of narrow operators, including an extension of the notion to vector lattices and investigations of connections to regular operators. Narrow operators were a subject of numerous investigations during the last 30 years. This monograph provides a comprehensive presentation putting them in context of modern theory. It gives an in depth systematic exposition of concepts related to and influenced by narrow operators, starting from basic results and building up to most recent developments. The authors include a complete bibliography and many attractive open problems.

The notion of a dominated or rnajorized operator rests on a simple idea that goes as far back as the Cauchy method of majorants. Loosely speaking, the idea can be expressed as follows. If an operator (equation) under study is dominated by another operator (equation), called a dominant or majorant, then the properties of the latter have a substantial influence on the properties of the former. Thus, operators or equations that have'nice'dominants must possess'nice'properties. In other words, an operator with a somehow qualified dominant must be qualified itself. Mathematical tools, putting the idea of domination into a natural and complete form, were suggested by L. V. Kantorovich in 1935-36. He introduced the funda­ mental notion of a vector space normed by elements of a vector lattice and that of a linear operator between such spaces which is dominated by a positive linear or monotone sublinear operator. He also applied these notions to solving functional equations. In the succeedingyears many authors studied various particular cases of lattice­ normed spaces and different classes of dominated operators. However, research was performed within and in the spirit of the theory of vector and normed lattices. So, it is not an exaggeration to say that dominated operators, as independent objects of investigation, were beyond the reach of specialists for half a century. As a consequence, the most important structural properties and some interesting applications of dominated operators have become available since recently.

The theory of vector lattices, stemming from the mid-thirties, is now at the stage where its main achievements are being summarized. The sweeping changes of the last two decades have changed its image completely. The range of its application was expanded and enriched so as to embrace diverse branches of the theory of functions, geometry of Banach spaces, operator theory, convex analysis, etc. Furthermore, the theory of vector lattices was impregnated with principally new tools and techniques from other sections of mathematics. These circumstances gave rise to a series of mono­ graphs treating separate aspects of the theory and oriented to specialists. At the same time, the necessity of a book intended for a wider readership, reflecting the modern diretions of research became clear. The present book is meant to be an attempt at implementing this task. Although oriented to readers making their first acquaintance with vector-lattice theory, it is composed so that the main topics dealt with in the book reach the current level of research in the field, which is of interest and import for specialists. The monograph was conceived so as to be divisible into two parts that can be read independently of one another. The first part is mainly Chapter 1, devoted to the so-called Boolean-valued analysis of vector lattices. The term designates the applica­ tion of the theory of Boolean-valued models by D. Scott, R. This Ebook is concerned with both the theory of the Kurzweil-Henstock integral and the basic facts on Riesz spaces. Moreover, even the so-called Šipoš integral, which has several applications in economy, is illustrated. The aim of this Ebook is two-fold. First, it can be understood as an introductory textbook to the Kurzweil-Henstock integral as well as to some algebraic structures which are important from the viewpoint of applications to integration and probability theory. Second, it discusses some possibilities of further developments including recent results and open problems.

Since the beginning of the thirties a considerable number of books on func­ tional analysis has been published. Among the first ones were those by M. H. Stone on Hilbert spaces and by S. Banach on linear operators, both from 1932. The amount of material in the field of functional analysis (in­ cluding operator theory) has grown to such an extent that it has become impossible now to include all of it in one book. This holds even more for text­ books. Therefore, authors of textbooks usually restrict themselves to normed spaces (or even to Hilbert space exclusively) and linear operators in these spaces. In more advanced texts Banach algebras and (or) topological vector spaces are sometimes included. It is only rarely, however, that the notion of order (partial order) is explicitly mentioned (even in more advanced exposi­ tions), although order structures occur in a natural manner in many examples (spaces of real continuous functions or spaces of measurable function~). This situation is somewhat surprising since there exist important and illuminating results for partially ordered vector spaces, in. particular for the case that the space is lattice ordered. Lattice ordered vector spaces are called vector lattices or Riesz spaces. The first results go back to F. Riesz (1929 and 1936), L. Kan­ torovitch (1935) and H. Freudenthal (1936).

Riesz space (or a vector lattice) is an ordered vector space that is simultaneously a lattice. A topological Riesz space (also called a locally solid Riesz space) is a Riesz space equipped with a linear topology that has a base consisting of solid sets. Riesz spaces and ordered vector spaces play an important role in analysis and optimization. They also provide the natural framework for any modern theory of integration. This monograph is the revised edition of the authors'book Locally Solid Riesz Spaces (1978, Academic Press). It presents an extensive and detailed study (with complete proofs) of topological Riesz spaces. The book starts with a comprehensive exposition of the algebraic and lattice properties of Riesz spaces and the basic properties of order bounded operators between Riesz spaces. Subsequently, it introduces and studies locally solid topologies on Riesz spaces— the main link between order and topology used in this monograph. Special attention is paid to several continuity properties relating the order and topological structures of Riesz spaces, the most important of which are the Lebesgue and Fatou properties. A new chapter presents some surprising applications of topological Riesz spaces to economics. In particular, it demonstrates that the existence of economic equilibria and the supportability of optimal allocations by prices in the classical economic models can be proven easily using techniques from the theory of topological Riesz spaces. At the end of each chapter there are exercises that complement and supplement the material in the chapter. The last chapter of the book presents complete solutions to all exercises. Prerequisites are the fundamentals of real analysis, measure theory, and functional analysis. This monograph will be useful to researchers and graduate students in mathematics. It will also be an important reference tool to mathematical economists and to all scientists and engineers who use order structures in their research.

While Volume I (by W.A.J. Luxemburg and A.C. Zaanen, NHML Volume 1, 1971) is devoted to the algebraic aspects of the theory, this volume emphasizes the analytical theory of Riesz spaces and operators between these spaces. Though the numbering of chapters continues on from the first volume, this does not imply that everything covered in Volume I is required for this volume, however the two volumes are to some extent complementary.
