What is structural injustice, and who ultimately bears responsibility for it? In answering these questions Maeve McKeown goes beyond the widely accepted narrative of unintended consequences and blameless participation to explain how power and responsibility truly function in today's world.Drawing on case studies from sweatshops to climate change, McKeown identifies three types of structural injustice: the pure and unintended accumulation of disparate activities; the avoidable injustice that could be ameliorated by the powerful but nevertheless continues; the deliberate perpetuation of structural processes that benefit powerful political and economic agents. Critical Sexuality Studies (CSS) and Lavender Languages/Linguistics (LLL) are leading modes of inquiry in two different fields of sexuality studies. In this edited collection, chapters reveal how these can be combined to produce a new approach to analyzing language use, sexuality and gender, and discourse on authority and power. Legacies of social injustice are very frequently erased, denied or declared redundant. This book charges that just about every philosophical theory of mind or language developed over the past 50 years in the West is systematically inaccurate. Systemic oppression has influenced the processes that theories of mind or language purport to identify; however, that same systemic oppression has also made it so that most middle-to-upper class White men (including most philosophers of mind or language) are ignorant of systemic oppression. Consequently, most theories of mind or language are systematically inaccurate because they fail to account for the influences of systemic oppression. Philosopher Jeff Engelhardt argues for the de-idealization of two influential theories in the philosophy of mind and language--social externalism and objective type externalism--and considers some consequences of the de-idealization project. Following the work of Charles Mills, Engelhardt argues that ideal theories adopt oppression-obscuring assumptions while nonideal theories avoid them (or at least try to). Ideal theories assume that language users are basically equal, and that social institutions and structures are basically just, but scholarship on Western social relations, institutions, and structures shows that in fact each of these is systematically influenced by oppression. Consequently, ideal theories tend to be systematically inaccurate. Moreover, since oppression systematically produces ignorance of systemic oppression, such systematically inaccurate theories are likely the norm rather than the exception. Engelhardt shows that once we've shown that oppression systematically influences the processes that determine linguistic meanings (according to content externalism), then we have reason to expand our notion of hermeneutical injustice, we have evidence that hermeneutical injustice occurs systematically, and we have grounds for expanding discussions of conceptual engineering to include questions about engineering the processes that determine concepts, not just concepts themselves.

The many discussions of power, from ancient India, China, through modern writers such as Nietzsche, theologies, ending up with postmodern essayists, locating power in discourses, there is hardly any hint why this theme became so prevalent. Apart from power as means of survival, every discussion discloses an excess of power beyond any need for survival. An emperor, possessing everything in excess – everything in his empire, including his subjects, why does he send armies to appropriate all? What is the purpose, apart from such an irrational inscription: “I came, I saw, I conquered”. The text addresses this question at many levels, leading to the issue of “emptiness”. Many texts, both worldly and theological reveal a peculiar “desire:” emperors, gods, conquerors want to be worshiped. The subjects must pray to their Lords, must celebrate their victories, must kneel before them, thank them for life and “gifts”, beg for protection and forgiveness. The desire for worship is regarded as universal and hence power is used to extend the domain of the Lord across the universe. With every conquest more slaves are brought to worship the Lord. The mere mentioning of his name evokes fear a worship. But then the question must be answered: what such worship gets the Lord? (Lord here can be anyone: God of Gods, King with divine rights, dictator, famous name). First level: arbitrariness; he need not obey any rules since every uttered wish is the rule. Second, the wish is to be a possessor of all females as his. One famous variant: harem which includes convents whose inhabitants are married to some heavenly Lord. The disruption of this possession is the power of eros which cannot be reduced to possession. The text, then, opens to the personality types “hungry” for power. Their make-up is resentment, narcissism, populism, hypocrisy (usually using religion), cynicism, dramatic insecurity, and search for populist affirmation.

Advancing an intersectional theory of hegemony, this book shows how various power relations interact through capitalist structures of othering. Going beyond the usual critiques of capitalism, it analyses the market itself as a principal cause of various forms of externalisation and domination. Drawing on a rich body of original oral, ethnographic, and archival research, Nicole Eggers uses Kitawala as a lens through which to address the complex relationship between politics, religion, healing, and violence in central African history.Kitawala, which has roots in the African Watchtower (Jehovah's Witness) movement, has long been viewed both by scholars and by popular historians as a form of male-dominated, anticolonial insurgency. But just as Kitawalists were never exclusively male, their teachings and activities were never directed solely at the Belgian colonial state, and their yearnings for self-rule were never entirely about the secular realms of authority. How prisoners serve as media laborers, while the prison serves as a testing ground for new media technologies.Prisons are not typically known for cutting-edge media technologies. Yet from photography in the nineteenth century to AI-enhanced tracking cameras today, there is a long history of prisons being used as a testing ground for technologies that are later adopted by the general public. If we recognize the prison as a central site for the development of media technologies, how might that change our understanding of both media systems and carceral systems? Prison Media foregrounds the ways in which the prison is a model space for the control and transmission of information, a place where media is produced, and a medium in its own right. Examining the relationship between media and prison architecture, as surveillance and communication technologies are literally built into the facilities, this study also considers the ways in which prisoners themselves often do hard labor as media workers—labor that contributes in direct and indirect ways to the latest technologies developed and sold by multinational corporations like Amazon. There is a fine line between ankle monitors and Fitbits, and Prison Media helps us make sense of today's carceral society.
