In den Entwicklungsländern leben gegenwärtig etwa 3,5 Milliarden Menschen, das sind fast drei Viertel der Weltbevölkerung. Bis zum Jahr 2000 - also in weniger als vierzehn Jahren - wird diese Zahl auf etwa 4,8 Milliarden angewachsen sein, was dem jetzigen Stand der Weltbevölkerung entspricht. Gleichwohl wird den ent­ wicklungspolitischen Fragen noch immer keine angemessene Beachtung ge­ schenkt. Dies mag darin begründet sein, daß Entwicklungspolitik auf unterschied­ lichen Ebenen, z. B. national und international, praktiziert wird, daß Entwick­ lungspolitik ein schwieriges Unterfangen ist und häufig nicht zu den gewünschten Ergebnissen führt, daß die weltweite entwicklungspolitische Zusammenarbeit ein kaum zu durchschauendes Geflecht aus unterschiedlichen Sachzusammenhängen, Zielsetzungen und Realisierungschancen darstellt. Unser Buch versucht, dieses Geflecht zu entwirren und dem Leser Orientierungshilfen zu geben. Wegen der Vielschichtigkeit der weltweiten Verflechtungen werden die einzelnen Sachverhalte aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln betrachtet. Hohes Bevölke­ rungswachstum zum Beispiel ist ein typisches Kennzeichen der Entwicklungslän­ der und wird folglich als Problemfeld (Kapitel I) dargestellt. Andererseits kann eine starke Überbevölkerung auch Ursache von Unterentwicklung (Kapitel II) sein, weshalb Familienpolitik zu einem wichtigen Bestandteil der Eigenanstren­ gungen der Entwicklungsländer (KapitelllI) werden muß. Diese Eigenanstren­ gungen können von den Industrieländern (Kapitel IV) in Form von Entwicklungs­ projekten unterstützt werden. Gemeinsam mit diesen direkten Einflußmöglichkei­ ten der Länder selbst und ihrer Partnerländer spielen die internationalen Wirt­ schaftsbeziehungen (Kapitel V) eine bedeutsame Rolle.Entwicklungspolitik kann auch auf dieser Ebene ansetzen. Außenhandel und Kapitaltransfer besitzen einen großen Einfluß auf den Wohlstand eines Landes.

In Zurich at the 7th International Annual Meeting of the Society of Nuclear Hedicine in Europe, held in 1969, a group of young scientists from eleven countries dedicated some papers to the memory of Georg von Hevesy. The papers were published in a book entitled'Frontiers of Nuclear Medicine'(Springer-verlag Berlin, Heidelberg, New York). On the occasion of the Second International World Congress of Nuclear Medicine and Biology held in 1978 in Washington D.C., under the presidency of Henry N.Wagner,Jr., a group of young scientists again dedicated important papers from the Congress to the memory of Georg von Hevesy. This book consists of these papers, which present new results in the field of Nuclear Medicine reported by physicians, physicists, chemists, engineers, and computer scientists. The Georg von Hevesy Foundation of Nuclear Medicine in Zurich, Switzerland together with the president of the Second World Congress of Nuclear Medicine, Henry N.Wagner,Jr., have been the major forces in arranging publication of this book. The Georg von Hevesy Foundation is sponsoring the Hevesy Prize for Nuclear Medicine, the Hevesy Medal, and the Hevesy Memorial Lecture.

Presented in an interesting, historical and philosophical way, this book describes the current state of play in brain imaging, showing the differences among the different imaging modalities, and reviewing the knowledge about the chemical reactions in the brain, and their relationship to thinking, feeling and acting. The book reviews all the results of PET and PET/CT imaging of the brain with all radiopharmaceuticals that bind to receptors in all recognized and classified mental diseases, as well as the studies on the localization of those sites that are activated by sensory or motor activity. The book illustrates the parts of the brain activated and deactivated during sensory perception, motion and other mental functions and explains how the process of neurotransmission takes place in chemical terms. The book is a valuable reference resource for all those in nuclear medicine and radiology as well as the educated general public.

Each year, at the annual meeting of the Society of Nuclear Medicine, Henry Wagner summarizes his view of principal advances in the? eld. In A Personal History of Nuclear Medicine, he brings the same insight to the? fty years he has practiced, preached and breathed nuclear medicine. That same? fty years spans the era in which radioactivity has been harnessed to provide exquisite maps of physiologic function in the living human body. Thus, the book brings the perspective of an insider, whose own contributions have been particularly in? uential: leader of a premier program in education and research; founding member of the American Board of Nuclear Medicine; proponent of int- national cooperation and the World Congress, and much more. Because of Henry's positions and desire to meet and know colleagues throughout the world (he and his wife Anne are most gracious hosts and visitors) this autobiography is also a story of the major? gures who grew the? eld of nuclear medicine and made the discipline into a coherent one. The book also re? ects Henry's personality: his candor and un? inching way of telling it the way he thinks it is, his punctuated use of aphorisms (some of his own making), his deep understanding of who he is, and an innocent delight in many accomplishments. Some years ago, I suggested that Henry was a constructive troublemaker; someone who goaded us out of accepted wisdom into new, and sometimes outrageous, thinking.
