The paper identifies the main contributions of Massimo Quaini to the problems of historical ecology in its South-European developments and to the definition of geographic-historical microanalysis within geography. It is on this ground that the work of the naturalists/ecologists has most dialogued with his geographical epistemology, starting from the dissatisfaction with the macro-categories of the global scale, the decontextualization of geographic facts and the problems of the “second biologization of the environment”, and drawing new perspectives for geographical action starting from the interpretation of rural and historical-environmental heritage.

This book considers for the first time the relationship between the river environment and the economic and political structures of northern Italy in the post-Roman period. Through the study of the relationship between river and society over time, it shows how the Carolingian conquest and other major political events in northern Italy did not seem to introduce radical changes in the daily life or broad economic systems. In fact, ecological circuits, local networks, family strategies and monastic policies seem to have been equal factors that shaped the relationship between river and society. This monograph offers an innovative approach to the study of the early Middle Ages, integrating social sciences, historical records, archaeological and geoenvironmental data analyses to overcome the lack of written and material sources. These new integrated perspectives on the post-Roman world shed light on the relationship between humans and their environment and on the social complexity of the riverscape, topics not yet fully investigated in the historiographical debate.

Environmental Humanities is the product of the 21st century, an age in which it is no longer possible to grasp and manage environmental problems from a single viewpoint. This is true of the scientific method as well. Although fundamentally important for the understanding of ecological issues and changes to the climate, scientific knowledge is not sufficient for providing an adequate answer to the complex phenomenon that is the cause and consequence of the environmental challenges of our century. This is why traditional humanities subjects have been combined with the natural and social sciences and the arts into an interdisciplinary formation in an attempt to understand the causes, current forms, and future trajectories of the contemporary environmental crisis, and to give possible answers to it. This volume is intended to join a body of literature – introductions, textbooks – on Environmental Humanities, adapted to the Hungarian context. Due to its nature, it provides a comprehensive description of several topics, such as environmental philosophy, environmental anthropology, nature art, nature conservation, the relationship between religion and ecology, environmental history, legal, political, and economic issues, social justice, overpopulation, or food dilemmas. In addition, the volume shows community responses to contemporary ecological and social problems with examples from Hungary.

This book addresses the crisis of sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church in Latin America, the region of the world with the highest percentage of Catholics. Bringing together research from across the continent, it demonstrates that abuse within the Church is indeed a global phenomenon, though abuses have taken different forms according to varying sociocultural contexts. With attention to abuses committed against children, women and vulnerable adults – by both men and women – within the settings of parishes, new religious movements and international religious organizations, it also raises questions of justice, asking how to assess the suffering of victims, how to deal with abusers and how to prevent abuses. It will therefore be of interest to scholars of religious studies, sociology, Latin American studies, criminology, theology, and religious leaders with interests in the abuses and scandals that have been revealed in the worldwide Church.

La corrupción en el Sector Público y Privado, es uno de los problemas más intrincados que viven las sociedades modernas. La mala administración de los recursos de la nación, es un factor que incide en los bajos desarrollos y prosperidad de la población. En la presente investigación se hace un estudio histórico, de este delito, el cual podemos decir que nace con el Estado, tal como se evidencia en el capítulo histórico, que se desarrolla en el capítulo II. Posteriormente desarrollamos una serie de capítulos teóricos, para entrar en el estudio dogmático jurídico apegado a la teoría del delito, donde en cada tipo penal, se estudia el dolo, bien jurídico, acción, elemento normativo, sujetos activos y pasivos del mismo, así como su penalidad. Para el desarrollo de cada tipo penal, nos apoyamos en nuestra experiencia como abogados e investigadores, y en la más versada doctrina Europea, Colombiana, y sin duda la doctrina patria, aunado a esto la jurisprudencia nacional y la foránea, para que de esta forma el lector se forme un criterio global de los delitos de corrupción tanto en Ecuador, como en los países vecinos. Se destaca en la presente obra, el esfuerzo de las Naciones por erradicar este mal de la sociedad, cuando se evidencia la abundancia de tratados y convenios internacionales, que en su mayoría por ser de derechos humanos se integran a la Constitución, en fundamento al Bloque de la constitucionalidad.

Este segundo tomo de la obra de investigación sobre los debates actuales del Sistema Penal Integral recoge las reflexiones que, sobre el campo penal, se hacen desde perspectivas transdisciplinares relacionadas con las criminologías contemporáneas y la política criminal actual. La necesidad de fundamentos empíricos para la formulación de política pública penal nos llevaron a abordar los problemas sociales actuales frente a fenómenos transnacionales y globales, tales como la criminalidad de los poderosos, el crimen organizado, el terrorismo, el derecho penal transnacional, el conflicto armado y los debates críticos relacionados con el populismo punitivo, la vulneración de derechos humanos en las cárceles de la región y los debates sobre el control del delito en el paradigma de la seguridad. An Open Access edition of this book is available on the Liverpool University Press website and the OAPEN library as part of the Opening the Future project with COPIM. Representations of China in Latin American Literature (1987-2016) analyses contemporary Latin American novels in which China is the main theme. Using ‘China'as a multidimensional term, it explores how the novels both highlight and undermine assumptions about China that have shaped Latin America's understanding of ‘China'and shows ‘China'to be a kind of literary/imaginary ‘third'term which reframes Latin American discourses of alterity. On one level, it argues that these texts play with the way that ‘China'stands in as a wandering signifier and as a metonym for Asia, a gesture that essentialises it as an unchanging other. On another level, it argues that the novels'employment of ‘China'resists essentialist constructions of identity. ‘China'is thus shown to be serving as a concept which allows for criticism of the construction of fetishized otherness and of the exclusion inherent in essentialist discourses of identity. The book presents and analyses the depiction of an imaginary of China which is arguably performative, but which discloses the tropes and themes which may be both established and subverted, in the novels. Chapter One examines the way in which ‘China'is represented and constructed in Latin American novels where this country is a setting for their stories. The novels studied in Chapter Two are linked to the presence of Chinese communities in Latin America. The final chapter examines novels whose main theme is travel to contemporary China. Ultimately, in the novels studied in this book ‘China'serves as a concept through which essentialist notions of identity are critiqued.

Dangerous Speech is the first systematic treatment of blasphemous speech in colonial Mexico. This engaging social history examines the representation of blasphemy as a sin and a crime, and its repression by the Spanish Inquisition. The Spanish colonists viewed blasphemy not only as an insult against God but also as a dangerous misrepresentation of the deity, which could call down his wrath in a ruinous assault on the imperial enterprise. Why then, asks Villa-Flores, did Spaniards dare to blaspheme? Having mined the period's moral literature—philosophical works as well as royal decrees and Inquisition treatises and trial records in Spanish, Mexican, and U.S. archives and research libraries—Villa-Flores deftly interweaves images of daily life in colonial Mexico with vivid descriptions of human interactions to illustrate the complexity of a culture profoundly influenced by the Catholic Church. In entertaining and sometimes horrifying vignettes, the reader comes face to face with individuals who used language to assert or manipulate their identities within that repressive society. Villa-Flores offers an innovative interpretation of the social uses of blasphemous speech by focusing on specific groups—conquistadors, Spanish settlers, Spanish women, and slaves of both genders—as a lens to examine race, class, and gender relations in colonial Mexico. He finds that multiple motivations led people to resort to blasphemy through a gamut of practices ranging from catharsis and gender self-fashioning to religious rejection and active resistance. Dangerous Speech is a valuable resource for students and scholars of colonialism, the social history of language, Mexican history, and the changing relations of gender, class, and ethnicity in colonial Latin America.

Die im Jahre 1905 von Gustav Gröber ins Leben gerufene Reihe der Beihefte zur Zeitschrift für romanische Philologie zählt zu den renommiertesten Fachpublikationen der Romanistik. Die Beihefte pflegen ein gesamtromanisches Profil, das neben den Nationalsprachen auch die weniger im Fokus stehenden romanischen Sprachen mit einschließt. Zur Begutachtung können eingereicht werden: Monographien und Sammelbände zur Sprachwissenschaft in ihrer ganzen Breite, zur mediävistischen Literaturwissenschaft und zur Editionsphilologie. Mögliche Publikationssprachen sind Französisch, Spanisch, Portugiesisch, Italienisch und Rumänisch sowie Deutsch und Englisch. Sammelbände sollten thematisch und sprachlich in sich möglichst einheitlich gehalten sein.

Es por ello por lo que, una vez terminadas las investigaciones sobre el bicentenario en la Universidad de Medellín, el grupo de investigaciones jurídicas, con la invaluable ayuda del maestro Libardo Rodríguez Rodríguez, se ha propuesto lanzar un libro temático que refleje algunos resultados de dicha investigación. Para hacerlo mucho más académico, hemos invitado a un selecto grupo de especialistas iberoamericanos de derecho público para discurrir en torno a dos grandes temas:'El derecho público en Iberoamérica: evolución y expectativas'y'La justicia contencioso-administrativa en Colombia: 100 años'. Con esto, se nos brinda una importante ocasión para rendir un merecido homenaje al gran jurista colombiano Jaime Vidal Perdomo quien llega a la cúspide de su vida pro-fesional y hoy se presenta como uno de los más destacados juristas en el campo del derecho administrativo

Esta investigación pertenece a la historia social, específicamente a la línea interesada en el estudio de las familias de las élites locales del Antiguo Régimen, cuyas herramientas conceptuales y metodológicas nos permiten comprender las actitudes y los comportamientos de las sociedades rurales durante la época colonial. En'Vecinos de casa poblada'se estudia el caso de la familia Gómez de Portugal, del pueblo de españoles conocido como Santa María de los Lagos, por ser una muestra representativa de las personas que ganaron con grandes esfuerzos las recompensas y privilegios que la Corona española otorgó a quienes la apoyaron a afianzar su autoridad en las tierras recién conquistadas. Las preeminencias obtenidas los colocaron como vecinos principales o vecinos de casa poblada. Al paso de los años las familias de élite buscaron conservar sus prerrogativas, por ello la investigación se centra en explicar qué significó estar en una posición privilegiada en el Antiguo Régimen y qué estrategias trazaron para conservar su estatus. Para responder estas y otras preguntas, se estudió a los Gómez Portugal desde 1563 hasta 1810, lo que permitió profundizar en su genealogía y seleccionar las siete ramas más representativas de la familia. Así se profundizó en la descripción y análisis de sus actividades políticas, sus inversiones y negocios; los patrones de comportamiento, principalmente el interés que mostraron en el futuro de los hijos, reflejado en el manejo de los enlaces matrimoniales y en el hecho de destinarlos a la vida en religión. Finaliza con la participación de integrantes de la familia en los primeros meses de la guerra de independencia de 1810.

La Orden Militar de Santiago fue una de las instituciones más prestigiosas en la Península durante la Edad Moderna. Esta institución nobiliaria contaba desde la Edad Media con una sede espiritual en la que se cuidaban los aspectos religiosos de sus miembros y donde se enseñaba la regla a los nuevos caballeros. Dicha sede espiritual de los santiaguistas fue, desde 1175, el monasterio de Santiago de Uclés, en la actual provincia de Cuenca. Este libro reconstruye, por primera vez, la historia constructiva de la antigua casa madre de los santiaguistas a lo largo de más de dos siglos, poniendo en evidencia que la sede de Uclés fue un espacio de singular relevancia dentro del patrocinio arquitectónico emprendido por la Corona a partir del siglo XVI. Desde 1523, el rey pasó a ostentar el cargo de administrador perpetuo de la orden, lo que motivó que desde 1525 pasaran por Uclés los más grandes maestros de obras de la Península. Gracias a la aportación de numerosa documentación inédita, ha podido reconstruirse la cronología de las fases del proyecto y los autores que se vieron implicados en el mismo, desde Enrique Egas hasta Juan Gómez de Mora, entre muchos otros. Además, esta publicación incide en valorar los usos y las funciones para los que fueron concebidos los distintos espacios del monasterio, tanto para servir adecuadamente a la vida religiosa como para ser exponentes de valores simbólicos y de representación.
