- Abstract
Fay Taylour (1904-1983) remains the most successful female motorsports champion. She defeated the foremost male motorcycle speedway stars of the 1920s and 1930s. A household name in Britain and her native Ireland, she won further fame on the track in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Her successes against men led to a ban on women competing against them in the UK, but Fay Taylour carried on, racing around the world. She also built a new career in long distance car racing and carved a name for herself in the new sport of midget car racing. All of this came to a halt with the outbreak of the Second World War, which, controversially, saw Fay Taylour join Oswald Mosley's fascist movement and become part of an underground pro-Hitler campaign in London. She was imprisoned for three years by the British authorities. After the war, she was one of the very few pre-war women motorsports champions to return to the track. She re-established her career with highly successful tours in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, before moving to the USA. There she first sold sports cars in Hollywood before returning to midget-car racing across America. Later banned from the USA for her earlier politics, she again took to racetracks around the world, competing against the world's best well into her fifties. This first full biography of Fay Taylour is based on her extensive personal papers, media reports of her racing career around the world, and decades of UK government security files. It covers Taylour's life on and off the track, her struggles with sports and security authorities, her battles against anti-female prejudices, and her many passionate love affairs.

- Abstract
While there has been agreement among followers of Aquinas that being insofar as it is being (being qua being) is the subject of metaphysics, there is not agreement on how this being qua being is to be understood, nor on how we come to know the being that is the object of metaphysical investigation. The topic of what being is, as the object of the science of metaphysics, and how to account for the “discovery” of the being of metaphysics have emerged as central problems for the contemporary retrieval of Aquinas and for the larger project of post-Leonine Thomism in general. This lack of agreement has hampered the retrieval of Aquinas's metaphysics. The collection of essays within The Discovery of Being and Thomas Aquinas is divided into three major parts: the first set of essays concerns the foundation of metaphysics within Thomism; the second set exemplifies the use of metaphysics in fundamental philosophical issues within Thomism; and the third set employs metaphysics in central theological issues. The Discovery of Being and Thomas Aquinas allows major scholars of the different types of Thomism to engage in a full-scale defense of their position, as well as expanding Thomistic metaphysics to the discipline of theology in important ways.

- Abstract
“A fascinating examination of one of the best-known British forces of the Second World War... An efficient and increasingly professional military unit.” —History of War What was the Home Guard? Who were the men and women who served in it? And what can be said of their real role and significance once the popular myths have been stripped away? Despite the fame of the Home Guard—of Dad's Army—the true story of this wartime organization tends to be neglected. The myths obscure the reality. Stephen Cullen's aim in this thoroughgoing new study is to cut through the misunderstandings in order to reassess the Home Guard and its contribution to Britain's war effort—and to deepen our understanding of the men and women who were members of it. He sets the Home Guard in the long historical context of domestic defense planning, then focuses on the preparations made before the outbreak of the Second World War. In detail he traces the changing role of the Home Guard during its wartime existence as it adapted to meet the multitude of challenges it faced—from civil defense and intelligence gathering to training for guerrilla warfare. “This enjoyable and well-illustrated book covers the ‘rags to riches'story of the Home Guard from the 1940 volunteer in civilian clothing, armed with a keepsake from an earlier war, to the fully trained and equipped part-time soldier.” —The Armourer “An interesting and accurate account of a force that was in fact a well drilled, well organised and by wars end, a very professional fighting unit by the time of its stand down in 1944.” —WW2 Connection

- Abstract
The great Franciscan theologian St. Bonaventure (c.1217-74) engaged in philosophy as well as theology, and the relation between the two in Bonaventure's work has long been debated. Yet, few studies have been devoted to Bonaventure's thought as a whole. In this survey, Christopher M. Cullen reveals Bonaventure as a great synthesizer, whose system of thought bridged the gap between theology and philosophy. The book is organized according to the categories of Bonaventure's own classic text, De reductione artium ad theologiam. Cullen follows Bonaventure's own division of the branches of philosophy and theology, analyzing them as separate but related entities. He shows that Bonaventure was a scholastic, whose mysticism was grounded in systematic theological and philosophical reasoning. He presents a fresh and nuanced perspective on Bonaventure's debt to Augustine, while clarifying Aristotle's influence. Cullen also puts Bonaventure's ideas in context of his time and place, contributing significantly to our understanding of the medieval world. This accessible introduction provides a much-needed overview of Bonaventure's thought. Cullen offers a clear and rare reading of'Bonaventurianism'in and for itself, without the complications of critique and comparison. This book promises to become a standard text on Bonaventure, useful for students and scholars of philosophy, theology, medieval studies, and the history of Christianity.

- Author
-
L. M. Cullen and L. M. Cullen
- Abstract
This 2003 book offers a distinctive overview of the internal and external pressures responsible for the making of modern Japan. L. M. Cullen argues that Japanese policies and fears have often been caricatured in western accounts which have viewed the expansion of the west in an unduly positive light. He shows that Japan before 1854, far from being in progressive economic and social decay or political crisis, was on balance a successful society led by rational policymakers. He also shows how when an external threat emerged after 1793 the country became on balance more open rather than more oppressive and that Japan displayed remarkable success in negotiation with the western powers in 1853–68. In the twentieth century, however, with the 1889 constitution failing to control the armed forces and western and American interests encroaching in Asia and the Pacific, Japan abandoned realism and met her nemesis in China and the Pacific.

- Abstract
This book combines the experience of 225 experts on 900 pages. Scientists worldwide are currently overwhelmed by the ever-increasing number and diversity of genome projects. This handbook is your guide through the jungle of new methods and techniques available to analyse gene expression - the first to provide such a broad view of the measurement of mRNA and protein expression in vitro, in situ and even in vivo. Despite this broad approach, detail is sufficient for you to grasp the principles behind each method. In each case, the authors weigh up the advantages and disadvantages, paying particular attention to the automated, high-throughput processing demanded by the biotech industry. Completely up to date, the book covers such ground-breaking methods such as DNA microarrays, serial analysis of gene expression, differential display, and identification of open reading frame expressed sequence tags. All the methods and necessary equipment are presented visually in more than 300 mainly colour illustrations to assist their step-by-step reproduction in your laboratory. Each chapter is rounded off with its own set of extensive references that provide access to detailed experimental protocols. In short, the bible of analysing gene expression.

22. National Security Constitutionalism in the Commonwealth Five Eyes States
- Author
-
Paul F Scott and Paul F Scott
- Abstract
This book examines the constitutional treatment of national security in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. These four states share their Commonwealth heritage and are members, alongside the USA, of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance. The book takes a comparative approach to the institutions through which, and tools with which, these four states seek to protect their national security against the threats of both terrorism and hostile state activity and how they have evolved over time. It identifies and examines the various specialised institutions, inside and outside of legislatures, which have grown up to oversee the exercise of public power for national security purposes while maintaining the required secrecy. It argues that the extent of the borrowing and sharing between these jurisdictions in the domain of national security, now and in the past, permits us to talk about a Commonwealth model of national security constitutionalism.

- Abstract
This book addresses the complex socioeconomic situation in the Polish-Ukrainian borderland, in the context of the labour market, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It analyses and assesses the measures which influence the process of Ukrainian war refugees'adaptation to the Polish labour market, surveying the engagement of local actors, such as employers, labour market institutions and nongovernmental organisations. It examines the impact of the refugee crisis on this market, as well as mobilisation of various groups of actors in order to support this specific group of migrants in adapting to life in Poland. The authors argue that this phenomenon of the migration of war refugees confirms the thesis that political instability can be a factor in pushing people abroad as equally important as inequalities in prosperity. The book identifies the characteristic features of the stream of war refugees from Ukraine as a category of cross-border flows. Before the Russian attack, the influx of Ukrainians to Poland was due mainly to economic pressures, whereas, after the outbreak of war, Ukrainians'motivation to cross the border with Poland as well as the structure of this migration stream have radically changed. The book offers in-depth insight into the development of borderland regions, and especially the cross-border labour market as a specific element of the borderland economic ecosystem. It highlights the positive outcomes of the migration crisis, which will serve as examples of best practice for other regions in Europe. This book will be of interest to scholars, researchers and policymakers concerned with regional development, including contact regions, as well as cross-border flows, the labour market and migration.

- Abstract
Disability impacts everyone in some way. Approximately 10-20% of the world's population live with disability, and the associated issues affect not just these individuals but also their friends, family, and colleagues. When looking at it this way, it is strange that disability continues to be thought of as an anomaly—either as a medical problem located in a damaged body or something that exists exclusively outside the body, in a society that takes little account of non-normative bodies.Critical disability studies both questions these existing notions of disability and interrogates how they have become a part of the academic attitude towards the field. As the first comprehensive handbook on critical disability studies, this volume provides an authoritative overview of the subject. Including 32 chapters written by established scholars and emerging, next-generation researchers it also includes contributions from activists, writers, and practitioners from the global north and the global south.Divided into three parts: Representation, art, and culture; Media, technology, and communication; and Activism and the life course, it offers discussions on core critical disability studies topics including the social model, technology studies, trauma studies, representation, and queer theory, as well as ground-breaking work on emerging and cutting-edge areas such as neurodiversity and critical approaches in the Middle East, United States, Australia, and Europe. It is required reading for all academics and students working in not just critical disability studies but sociology, digital accessibility and inclusion, health and social care, and social and public policy more broadly.

- Abstract
Mindfulness and Business Education: Developing self-aware future leaders is a practical guide for educators and academics with teaching responsibilities in business schools or colleges. Business schools have a responsibility to equip future leaders with the right knowledge and the right skills to make the right decisions, particularly in times of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. This responsibility can only be met if business schools change the way they teach and develop self-aware future leaders who are grounded in the foundations of mindfulness. The book is divided into three parts: Why, What, and How. Part One: Why introduces the foundations of mindfulness, draws on the history of business school development, and discusses leadership approaches presently taught in business schools. Part Two: What discusses ways of measuring mindfulness, the need for training business educators as mindfulness facilitators, and the contextualisation of mindfulness in contemporary business topics such as wellbeing, sustainability, diversity, and artificial intelligence. Part Three: How provides case studies and scripted resources for immediate use and implementation in extracurricular or co-curricular activities to design mindfulness-based modules and courses, to introduce mindfulness coaching as part of pastoral care and staff development, and to develop mindfulness-driven business education strategies. This is an ideal book for those in business education looking to use mindfulness to develop future managers and leaders.

- Abstract
This edited volume explores the relationship between Artificial intelligence (AI), business performance, and regulation. Artificial intelligence allows entrepreneurs to create universally transferable platforms and customers to find the offer they want. Indeed, AI is an excellent tool for competitiveness and innovation. It can contribute to a positive business performance by reducing costs, analyzing and exploiting data, optimizing marketing strategy and advertising targeting, and improving the customer experience. However, Artificial intelligence can also generate threats such as disinformation, manipulation, and false content. Companies are increasingly becoming obliged to take security measures to protect digital data against cyber-attacks and data leaks. - Author
-
UN-HABITAT and UN-HABITAT
- Abstract
The World Cities Report 2024 will advance a people-centred approach to climate action, that promotes effective and inclusive climate action as a framework for building climate resilience in urban areas. The WCR 2024 advocates that people must be at the centre of any meaningful climate action. In this regard, climate action should not only contribute to mitigating GHG emissions, adapting and reversing the effects as of climate change, but should ensure that people have sustainable livelihoods and stable incomes, have food security, access to clean water and other basic services including affordable healthcare— all of which will reduce the vulnerability to climate change. The impacts of climate change are quite significant to the extent that adaptation and risk management can be powerful contributors to poverty eradication and sustainable development.

- Abstract
This volume explores the production, transmission, and reading practices of vernacular Bibles in early modern Europe. This varied collection of essays provides historical, book historical, literary, theological, and art historical perspectives to the movements of manuscript and printed Bibles. The contributions concern Bibles in many different languages and from across the European continent, from Ireland to Portugal. Rather than perceiving Scripture and the material carriers of Scripture as static things, this volume demonstrates how Bibles constantly acquired new meanings and functions as they moved through time and space, and were touched by the hands of makers, readers, and users.

- Abstract
This volume comprehensively discusses marine bioprospecting and its applications in the marine bioeconomy, specifically in clean energy generation, and in biomedical, industrial and agricultural sectors. The advent of modern technology, particularly advancements in deep-sea exploration and biotechnology, has enabled scientists to delve deeper into the ocean's depths and discover a treasure trove of unique organisms and compounds. This demonstrates that the rich history of human interactions with the oceans is firmly ingrained in marine bioprospecting. The blue-economy, which is a more accurate name for the systematic search for valuable substances and organisms in the water, has gained popularity in recent years as a possible route for sustainable economic development. One of the key driving factors behind marine bioprospecting is the growing realization that marine organisms possess unique biochemical compounds with the potential to revolutionize various industries. These compounds include novel enzymes, antimicrobial agents, bioactive molecules, and even potential pharmaceuticals. Readers will learn about the applications of these discoveries in bioremediation, wastewater treatment, and biofuel production, as well as the identification of natural substitutes for things that are detrimental to the environment, which include biodegradable plastics derived from marine microorganisms. The primary audience for the book will be governmental and international organizations, professionals, and economists, while the secondary audience will be professors and researchers in the fields of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Environmental Microbiology, and general Ocean Sciences.

- Abstract
The world is on the cusp of one and a half degrees of warming - just the rise it has committed itself to avoiding. Heat at such levels would be intolerable. Even before one and a half, seasons of climate disaster have struck with ever more devastating force, and yet a notion has taken hold that the cause is now lost: the intolerable has become unavoidable. The limit will be overshot - perhaps two degrees as well - and the best we can do is cool down the Earth at some later point, towards the end of the century, by means of technologies not yet proven. How did this happen? How could the idea of overshoot gain such traction? What forces are driving us into a climate that people - particularly poor people in the global South - won't be able to cope with? In Overshoot: How the World Surrendered to Climate Breakdown, Andreas Malm and Wim Carton present a history of the present phase of the crisis, likely to extend decades into the future, as the fossil fuel industry swims in the largest profits ever made. Money continues to flow into the construction of pipelines, platforms, terminals, mines - assets that will have to be destroyed for the planet to remain liveable. Too much heat has become officially acceptable because such revolutionary destruction is not. But should the rest of us abide by that priority?Unflinchingly critical of business-as-usual and the calls for surrender to it, sweeping in scope, stirring and sobering, Overshoot lays out the stakes for the climate struggle in the years ahead.

- Abstract
According to the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime, around 284 million people aged between 15 and 64 years used drugs in the year 2020. In addition, it is estimated that over 11 million people were injecting drugs and half of these were living with hepatitis C. Young people are using more drugs than previously, and numbers have increased over the past decade. While numbers are estimated at a global level, there remains little evidence for practitioners and policy makers on key questions, such as how many people are using drugs that are hidden and haven't contacted services. Questions include the challenging topics of providing safe injecting spaces and drug consumption rooms. As populations age in some regions, questions arise on the nature of substance use among older people. Countries with younger populations are concerned about estimates on the numbers of children potentially impacted by parental substance use and how to engage with them. Awareness of trauma informed services is increasing and questions arise on the impact of domestic abuse or adverse childhood experiences on people who use drugs and their families. Globally, there is a growing concern on how to inform the debate on cannabis policies and how to assess if the chosen policy will be acceptable to the general population. The aim of this book is to provide researchers, service providers and policy makers with a step-by-step guide to robust methodologies and illustrative case studies to address these challenges. The objective of each chapter is to answer a key question, provide a summary of the background evidence, demonstrate through a series of logical steps how to obtain national or local evidence, and finally illustrate the process with detailed, real life case studies. As addiction is encountered across a wide range of professions and civil society organizations, this book will be an essential textbook for graduate students of medicine, nursing public health, addiction, psychology and health and social care professions. It will be a guiding reference book for international, national and local commissioners and providers of related policies and services. At a local level the step-by-step case studies will provide an easy to follow framework for those wishing to apply the methods to benefit and improve their own practice, service or policy.

50. Vice and Psychiatric Diagnosis
- Author
-
John Z. Sadler and John Z. Sadler
- Abstract
Vice and Psychiatric Diagnosis begins with the simple question of why some categories of mental disorder include immoral or criminal conduct as diagnostic features, while most mental disorders in the DSM and ICD do not involve such'vice-laden'concepts. While this initial puzzle seems to concern only the limited domain of psychiatric nosology, Sadler's expansive scholarship reveals that this simple question leads inexorably to complex questions about the role of'madness and morality'in intellectual history, and to today's many conflicts and contradictions in the policy and culture of mental health, criminal justice, and related social welfare efforts. The book outlines the implications of vice concepts being incorporated into psychiatric diagnosis and clinical practice, leading to some of the vexing problems in mental health and social care. These issues include the fragmentation of care in social welfare efforts involving mentally ill people, criminal offenders, intellectually disabled individuals, and juvenile offenders. The analysis extends to cultural attitudes and policies as well: the insanity defense, managing the mentally ill criminal offender, the value of punishment in criminal justice, and derivative issues such as the ethics of forensic psychiatry, the growing problem of mass shootings, stigma, health literacy, and the difficulties in pursuing rigorous and consistent approaches to psychiatric diagnostic classification. In the pursuit of untangling these threads of vice and psychiatric diagnosis, Sadler provides a brief history of ideas about madness and morality, beginning in prehistory and extending into the late 20th century. The lessons from this history are applied in subsequent chapters, examining the'vice-mental disorder relationship'from the perspectives of philosophical/conceptual issues, the perspectives of criminal law and the criminal justice system, and the perspectives of public interest and public opinion. The concluding chapters formulate an alternative way of thinking about the vice-mental disorder relationship in clinical practice and public policy, culminating in'Forty Theses'which present the detailed conclusions and social implications for this monumental work.
