- Criminals--United States--Fiction
- Abstract
It can now be revealed that the evil and violent Mr Edward Hyde - alter ego of London's physician Doctor Henry Jekyll - did not die at the conclusion of the classic, Victorian-era case documented by Robert Louis Stevenson. Instead, this malignant criminal not only continued to plague Britons, but soon after set his ambitions for mayhem for other nations; and so headed for the United States.Follow this story, from bustling New York City to the balmy realms of Florida, where the goodly Jekyll feels the curse of his other personae more than ever before. Witness the tale of Hyde's influence and monstrous acts increasing and Jekyll soon realising that if he cannot find a way to resolve his bizarre duality he will be forever lost, and the suffering and bloodshed he will have been responsible for having loosed on the new, bright world of America will be a horror unparalleled. For Hyde is a man who can never be caught by authorities as he hides within the form of his maker, and holds that maker's life to ransom.

- Abstract
Challenges the longstanding perception that modernist composers made art, not money, and that those who made money somehow failed to make art.Patrons have long appeared as colorful, exceptional figures in music history, but this book recasts patrons and patronage as creative forces that shaped the sounds and meanings of new French music between the world wars. Far from mere sources of funding, early twentieth-century patrons collaborated closely with composers, treating commissions for new music as opportunities to express their own artistry. Patrons developed new pathways to participate in music-making, going beyond commissions to establish ballet companies, manage performance venues, and establish state programs. The impressive variety of patronage activities led to an explosion of new music as well as new styles and -isms, indelibly marking the repertoire that this book examines, including a number of pieces frequently heard in concert halls today. In addition to offering new perspectives on well-known French repertoire, this book challenges conceptions of patronage as a bygone phenomenon. Complementing a dwindling cast of aristocratic patrons were new ranks of music publishers, impresarios, state bureaucrats, opera directors, and others capitalizing on their savings, social connections, and artistic vision to bring new music into the world. In chapters on French discourse around patronage, aristocratic commissions, the stimulus provided by the interwar dance craze, music publishing, the Paris Opéra, state intervention in French musical life, and transatlantic musical exchanges, the book blends cultural history with primary source study and music analysis. It not only improves our understanding of French musical life and culture during the early twentieth century but also supplies us with essential insights into the ways modern music emerged at the intersection of music composition, aesthetic and national politics, and the creative labor of patrons.

- Abstract
Eddie Coyne loves playing the horses. Loves it so much it's ruining his relationship with his wife and six-year-old son. In a last ditch effort to prove he's not a loser in their eyes, Eddie places a seemingly impossible bet on a long shot and hits pay dirt. But before he can cash in and make amends with his family, he's thrown down an escalator and left for dead by a greedy hoodlum looking to cash in on Eddie's winnings. Dying, Eddie wakes up in the presence of the Jesses, a monolithic group of six whose job it is to decide who enters heaven and who enters hell. The Jesses tell Eddie he's stuck in the middle—not good enough for heaven, not bad enough for hell. They entice him to go in on one final bet to break the dead heat. If he triumphs, they stamp his ticket to paradise. If he loses, he spends eternity in the netherworld. The bet? Eddie must prevent someone chosen by the Jesses from taking their own life. Thinking it will be a piece of cake, Eddie agrees. He quickly learns the Jesses are more cunning than he'd imagined.

- Abstract
The complexity of modern chip design requires extensive use of specialized software throughout the process. To achieve the best results, a user of this software needs a high-level understanding of the underlying mathematical models and algorithms. In addition, a developer of such software must have a keen understanding of relevant computer science aspects, including algorithmic performance bottlenecks and how various algorithms operate and interact. This book introduces and compares the fundamental algorithms that are used during the IC physical design phase, wherein a geometric chip layout is produced starting from an abstract circuit design. This updated second edition includes recent advancements in the state-of-the-art of physical design, and builds upon foundational coverage of essential and fundamental techniques. Numerous examples and tasks with solutions increase the clarity of presentation and facilitate deeper understanding. A comprehensive set of slides is available on the Internet for each chapter, simplifying use of the book in instructional settings.“This improved, second edition of the book will continue to serve the EDA and design community well. It is a foundational text and reference for the next generation of professionals who will be called on to continue the advancement of our chip design tools and design the most advanced micro-electronics.” Dr. Leon Stok, Vice President, Electronic Design Automation, IBM Systems Group“This is the book I wish I had when I taught EDA in the past, and the one I'm using from now on.” Dr. Louis K. Scheffer, Howard Hughes Medical Institute“I would happily use this book when teaching Physical Design. I know of no other work that's as comprehensive and up-to-date, with algorithmic focus and clear pseudocode for the key algorithms. The book is beautifully designed!”Prof. John P. Hayes, University of Michigan“The entire field of electronic design automation owes the authors a great debt for providing a single coherent source on physical design that is clear and tutorial in nature, while providing details on key state-of-the-art topics such as timing closure.”Prof. Kurt Keutzer, University of California, Berkeley“An excellent balance of the basics and more advanced concepts, presented by top experts in the field.” Prof. Sachin Sapatnekar, University of Minnesota

Laura E. Little and Laura E. Little
- Abstract
In her casebook Conflict of Laws, now in its third edition, internationally respected teacher and scholar Laura Little offers a progressive, innovative approach to teaching complex material. She brings to the subject her drafting and advocacy expertise as the Associate Reporter for the Restatement (Third) Conflict of Laws, authorized by the American Law Institute in 2014. In a subject where there is plenty of room for debate and analysis, this casebook offers a contemporary alternative to the subject by connecting coverage of key concepts to law practice using modern cases and problem pedagogy. With its modular design, clear writing, comprehensive Teacher's Manual and online support, the text is highly teachable and has proven a road-tested favorite with both students and professors. The book has won acclaim from both established and new professors. The extensive transnational and international materials in the book render it appropriate for both Conflict of Laws and International Civil Litigation courses.New to the Third Edition: Addition of fully approved sections of the Restatement (Third) of Conflict of Laws together with analysis Refinement and streamlining of text and formatting as suggested by reviewers and book users Inclusion of recent cases and developments regarding such matters as internet regulation, interstate immunity, and the Alien Torts Claim Act Extensive revision to personal jurisdiction to highlight recent cases such as Ford and Mallory Benefits for instructors and students:Award-winning teacher and respected author Laura Little brings her considerable expertise in federal courts, conflict of laws, and constitutional law to the subject. Given her work drafting extensive provisions in the new Restatement (Third) of Conflict of Laws, Professor Little is well poised to punctuate the book with analysis of trends and future changes. Well-balanced casebook presents both numerous practical materials as well as deep jurisprudential lessons imbedded in the conflict of laws subject matter. Proven cases-and-problems pedagogy helps students apply concepts. Enhances student understanding of broad concepts revealing the nature of law and debates about government structure. Maintains a clear presentation of doctrines relevant to current law practice. Thematic approach puts conflicts of law in the context of actual issues confronted in law practice. Clear, straightforward writing avoids the “hide the ball” approach of many other books and maximizes accessibility to difficult material. Innovative organization, beginning with personal jurisdiction, follows the way issues arise in litigation and highlights the importance of forum selection. Highly adaptable modular presentation allows professors to customize approach. Contemporary cases and hypotheticals allow students to apply rules to current situations, while hallmark cases maintain continuity with the development of the discipline. Full coverage of current topics such as Internet issues, choice of law clauses, and international conflicts issues. International and comparative materials cover global aspects of conflicts; international civil litigation materials are substantial enough for professors to use it for that course. Emphasis on the Restatement (Second) of Conflicts, now the predominant United States approach but insufficiently covered in most other texts. Reference to changes proposed in the Restatement (Third) of Conflicts.

34. Select Topics of Econophysics

- Abstract
Economics requires understanding and analyzing forces that bring buyers and sellers to a market place who then negotiate exchanges of goods and services based on a mutually agreeable price. Economists have their own method of modeling whereby models are first conceived of some notion of economic and financial thinking, before being empirically tested, and anomalies are then recognized if the observed data is inconsistent with the hypothetical underpinning. This is in inherent contradiction with the modeling approaches of physicists who develop their theories, principle and laws after observing empirical data. The awareness that physics can enlighten the understanding of human behavior (and thus economics), and the interest of physicists in applying their training and models to understanding the complexities of finance and economics, led to the creation of a new field of study appropriately termed as Econophysics. Selected Topics on Econophysics is a collection of essays on topics that enhance and enrich our understanding of economic modeling when the same rigor of modelling used by physicists is brought to developing financial and economic theories. These articles include discussions on modeling bitcoins, stock index modeling using geometric Brownian motion, agent-based modeling, wealth distribution modeling, as well as modeling related to fractal regression, and chaotic processes. This interdisciplinary book will interest researchers, graduate students and professionals in the fields of economics, finance as well as physics.

- Abstract
Challenge your understanding of corporate, securities, and financial law and regulation with this ground-breaking book.Featuring incisive research from preeminent scholars in the field, this seminal work interrogates long-standing assumptions and beliefs that have remained unexamined for decades.Taking a novel approach, the book serves as both a conceptual'deconstruction'and a foundation for future research directions. Each chapter delves deep into the often-overlooked origins, mechanics and implications of outdated or misleading concepts (termed'fallacies') that form the backbone of contemporary corporate and securities laws, financial regulations and related domains.Beyond simply identifying these fallacies, the authors illustrate the profound implications of recalibrating our analytic perspectives. By expanding the spectrum of inquiry and moving along multiple continuums – such as public to private, micro to macro, transactional to structural, individual to systemic, and static to dynamic – this volume underscores the transformative potential of re-envisioning the fundamentals of these fields. An essential read, this book promises to be a catalyst for change and a must-have for anyone committed to staying at the forefront of law and policy.

- Abstract
This edited volume is part of the Information Age Publishing (IAP) Series on Family, School and Community Partnerships. This book addresses the ways families and communities engage with an increasingly common feature of the American public education landscape: charter schools. Family and Community Engagement in Charter Schools contains seven chapters examining this emerging field of study authored by both established and emerging scholars. Chapters examine how charter schools, the policy landscape, families, community institutions, and charter school educators both create and inhibit opportunities for effective family and community engagement. Data is included from intensely charterized school districts such as Los Angeles, Denver, New York City, New Orleans and Oakland as well as broader state-level perspectives from California and Massachusetts. The authors approach this important relationship without the fixed ideological lens that often colors research on this controversial from of school organization. In addition to highlighting their unique findings, chapters propose practical, research-based strategies for schools, districts, or communities so that charter schools can be strong sources of local democracy- an oft-cited but rarely achieved goal. The book will broaden the field of Family and Community Engagement by including new theories, scholars, and areas of study. It is valuable reading for researchers, graduate students, policymakers, educational leaders, and community-based organizations seeking to better understand this unique form of organizing public schools.

- Abstract
The World Yearbook of Education 2025 analyzes teacher policies and the governance of the teaching profession in the contemporary context of major societal changes and globalizing processes. The first volume dedicated to an overview of globalized teacher policies and their implications for the status of the teaching profession across the world, this book reflects the ambition to advance the debate on the challenges and opportunities associated with the teaching profession. It recognizes that teacher policy is situated at the crossroads of three logics that have changed and become more complex due to globalization processes since the 1970s: the logic of teacher policy regulation has shifted from state-centric government toward pluriscalar global governance; the logic of employment relations has shifted to a flexibility paradigm; the logic of teacher education has shifted from the transmission of knowledge in teacher education to teachers'lifelong learning. In line with the objective to analyze the governance of the teaching profession in the contemporary context of major societal changes and globalizing processes, this book is organized into three parts, focusing on: teacher policies as global governance and public policy; teacher labor markets, employment relations, and careers and the institutional transformations in the world of work and employment; and the reconfiguration of teachers'work and the learning of teachers Its contributors use different methodological approaches to draw on a range of case studies and analyses of national, regional, and global patterns. A timely and important contribution to discussions of the future of the teaching profession across the world, the World Yearbook of Education 2025 is ideal reading for policymakers, the professional teaching community, researchers, graduate students, and anyone interested in education policy-related areas such as public policy, comparative education, and sociology of education.

42. Political Breakdown: Why Politics Has Failed

- Abstract
This book explains the recent loss of civility in American politics. Recently, our leaders have become more and more hostile to each other. They not only disagree about policy but reject the decency that used to assuage their differences. The usual explanation is that extremists now dominate both major parties. This book shows, however, that unresolved social differences are chiefly to blame. After 1960, new divisions over race, poverty, and immigration erupted and have never been resolved. The left would extend new rights and benefits to many new claimants, while the right rejects any such idea. Both sides believe the very nature of the country is at stake. In fact, however, left and right could agree about a new America. It would be more diverse than now but retain the essential individualism of our culture. In America, life must continue to mean more than survival. It must again become a quest for distant goals.

- Abstract
Simultaneously spiritual and material, liturgy incarnates unseen realities in concrete forms – bread, wine, water, the architectural arrangement of churches and temples. Nineteenth-century writers were fascinated with liturgy. In this book Joseph McQueen shows the ways in which Romantic and Victorian writers, from Wordsworth to Wilde, regardless of their own personal beliefs, made use of the power of the liturgy in their work. In modernity, according to recent theories of secularization, the natural opposes the supernatural, reason (or science) opposes faith, and the material opposes the spiritual. Yet many nineteenth-century writers are manifestly fascinated by how liturgy and ritual undo these typically modern divides in order to reinvest material reality with spiritual meaning, reimagine the human as malleable rather than mechanical, and enflesh otherwise abstract ethical commitments. McQueen upends the dominant view of this period as one of scepticism and secularisation, paving the way for surprising new avenues of research.

- Abstract
General of the Armies John J. Pershing (1860–1948) had a long and decorated military career but is most famous for leading the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. He published a memoir, My Experiences in the World War, and has been the subject of several biographies, but the literature regarding this towering figure and his enormous role in the First World War deserves to be expanded to include a collection of his wartime correspondence.Carefully edited by John T. Greenwood, volume 4 of John J. Pershing and the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I, 1917–1919 covers the period of March 21–May 19, 1918, when General Pershing faced continuing controversies with the British and French political and military leaders who desperately sought American manpower to replace their mounting losses. Pershing's plans to build the AEF were disrupted after the long-anticipated German grand offensive struck the British front on the Somme on March 21, 1918, followed by a second German offensive on April 9. The German push radically transformed the Allied situation, changing the entire strategic orientation in the west within weeks. Under pressure to ensure the survival of the Allied coalition, and in discussion with Secretary of War Newton D. Baker and Gen. Tasker Bliss, Pershing set aside his plans for an independent American army under U.S. command and offered his available forces, whether fully trained or not, to Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau and Gen. Ferdinand Foch. In meetings with Foch and Gen. Philippe Pétain on May 18 and 19, respectively, Pershing once again stressed his plans for an American sector, and the two French generals agreed to the formation of such an army on the front once the present emergency had passed.Pershing's letters during this period convey a long and arduous struggle to build an American army at the front. Together, these volumes of wartime correspondence provide new insight into the work of a legendary soldier and the historic events in which he participated.

- Abstract
Delve into the history of energy resource conflicts, their present status, and the potential effects of today's energy production decisions on the future of humanity. This book examines international and sometimes intranational conflicts over energy resources, including ancient empires, 20th-century wars over oil, and the explosive growth of renewable energy. The volume begins with a series of chapters tracing the evolution and future implications of energy production and clashes over these vital resources. Next, readers will discover a collection of essays addressing fascinating yet sometimes contentious facets of the subject, including the current limits of renewable energy sources and the role nuclear power should play. A collection of 50 encyclopedic entries round out the book, providing readers with concise explanations of key concepts and terms.Energy resource conflicts have shaped the world we live in. After humans settled across the planet, growing empires began to compete for resources. First, they competed for wood, then steel and coal. The ability to mine these resources and turn them into trains, ships, and weapons decided which countries would dominate the world. Oil became the most important international resource by the turn of the 20th century and has remained so until the present day. But, as the authors argue, humans have the technology to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy for the vast majority of their energy needs, despite corporate fossil fuel interests. Using advanced statistics on the use and growth of all major energy sources, this book is an excellent source of information on the predicted growth of various forms of energy as well as the inevitable-yet not necessarily peaceful-transition toward renewable and carbon-free energy sources.
