This book is intended to provide a hitherto missing English-language overview of a multi-year research project in which a comprehensive methodology was developed to assess a rule-based classification of the habitat services, the primary net biomass productivity and carbon sequestration capacity. The comprehensive methodology presented operationalises the specifications of the MAES working group quantitatively. The MAES classification framework for integrative ecosystem assessments comprises the mapping of ecosystems, the classification of ecosystem conditions (ecosystem condition information for individual indicators, ecosystem functions and ecosystem types), the classification of ecosystem services and their integration. The presented rule-based classification of the three ecosystem services examined in depth using quantitative indicators is unique in the EU to date.

This book is the second volume in a series on montology dedicated to the transdisciplinary reflection of mountain research, considering the diversity of views on mountains and their problemata in the context of rapid technological development and unprecedented accumulation and dissemination of information around the world. The necessity for a new orderly and structured lexicon arose from the need to critically reassess the colonial past in the development of mountain territories, the development of a new and alternative understanding of mountain topics in the light of decolonized epistemology. The creation of coordinated and ordered terms for the main parts of mountain research creates the basis for an unorthodox understanding of the ontology of mountains and helps to better understand the complex cultural and natural essence of mountain socio-ecological systems. At the same time, a local episteme of mountains, considering local values, small scales, and vernacular visions are of particular importance, which must be taken into account in the current terminology. The purpose of the book is to provide methodological support for montology as a convergent and transdisciplinary science of mountains, based on the harmonization of its terminological base. The book pays special attention to onomastics, toponymy, standardization and other nuances of terms used in mountain research. According to this goal, three dozen articles in a relatively small format (about 3 pages) vividly, attractively and innovatively reflect the modern view of one or more related terms. Articles include definition(s) of the term, description of etymology, onomastics or toponymy used, examples of local characteristics compared to traditional sources, possible vernacular terms. Almond and peach species have global importance as food crops as well as use in landscaping including restoration and reforestation. Because currently available breeding germplasm has a very narrow genetic base, genetic improvement programs are turning to wild germplasm as sources of improved quality, productivity and resistance traits. This germplasm is also enabling the dramatic modification of traditional cropping systems as with the transfer of self-fruitfulness from related wild almond and peach species to normally self-sterile cultivated almond. While presence of an extensive wild almond and related germplasm has been documented in the literature over the past century, most information remains dispersed and often not generally accessible owing to its publication in treatises and journals of limited distribution. This monograph brings together a comprehensive characterization of almond and its related species including the cultivated and wild peaches. Because it represents the only comprehensive source of information on almond, peach and their wild relatives, it represents a basic reference text of interest to researchers in both the basic and applied plant and ecological sciences.

Compared with average climate changes, climate extremes which are considered as low-probability events have greater impacts on natural and social systems due to their suddenness, unpredictability and strong destructiveness. Located in the typical arid–semiarid climate transition zone, the Mongolian Plateau, dominated by herbage animal husbandry, is greatly affected by climate extremes, and its ecosystem is extremely fragile. In the context of global warming, the spatial-temporal variation research about climate extremes and their impacts on vegetation is not only beneficial to the protection of the grassland ecological environment in the Mongolian Plateau, but also of great significance to formulate an effective meteorological disaster risk management.Based on daily highest temperature, daily minimum temperature and daily precipitation dataset of 111 meteorological stations over Mongolian Plateau from 1961 to 2014. Firstly, sixteen extreme temperature indices and eleven extreme precipitation indices were calculated. Then, multi-spatial-temporal characteristics of climate extremes in the scope of intensity, duration and frequency were analyzed. At the same time, the vegetation variations were analyzed based on GIMMS NDVI3g data. Thirdly, correlation analysis and multiple stepwise regression analysis were used to analyze the relationships between extreme climate indices and NDVI in different spatial scales from the perspective of single factor and multiple factors, respectively. Finally, the future change of climate extremes in duration were explored based on the climate model data. At the same time, the vulnerable areas of grassland and forest were also identified, and adaptive options of different scales were proposed.Researchers engaged in extreme climate change and managers of government departments are the readership/primary audience for the work.

Many things happen in nature reserves that are contradictory at first glance. For example, flower meadows are mown down during maintenance work, even though all the plants growing there are protected. Elsewhere, protected reed beds are burnt down in a fen or the top layer of soil is removed with bulldozers in a dune conservation area.
