​The burden of cutaneous drug reactions is significant, in both outpatient and inpatient settings, and can result in morbidity and even mortality. This book is unique in its approach to this problem. This text is divided into basic principles, common drug reactions, skin conditions mimicked by drug reactions, drug reactions to the skin appendages, life-threatening drug reactions, less common drug reactions, and special groupings of drug reactions. For the clinician, the skin can only morphologically react in to many limited ways. This is also true for the pathologist. Combining these two forever linked specialties is a synergistic paradigm that greatly enhances diagnosis, and ultimately therapy, for these pernicious conditions. Drug reactions in the skin remain a common complication of therapy. True incidences of drug reactions are not available. For general discussion, the rule of 3% can be applied with reasonable assuredness. Approximately 3% of all hospitalized patients develop an adverse cutaneous drug reaction. Approximately 3% of these reactions are considered severe. Outpatient data is even more obscure, but at least 3% of dermatology clinic outpatient visits are due to a drug reaction. Cutaneous drug reactions compromise approximately 3% of all drug reactions. Even more challenging is the fact that the most vulnerable populations to drug reactions are increasing and include the elderly patients on prolonged drug therapy, and patients that use multiple drugs at the same time.

Histological features based on hematoxylin and eosin staining, and gross appearance comprise the major part of the illustrations. Immunostaining using the indirect immunoperoxidase or amino acid polymer method and non-isotopic in situ hybridization technique were employed when necessary. The indirect immunoperoxidase method using 1:500 to 1:1,000 diluted patients'serum as a primary antibody was also applied to localize pathogens within the lesion fixed in 10-20% formalin and embedded in paraffin. Papanicolaou- or Giemsa-stained cytology evaluation, as well as electron microscopic analysis and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), were also performed upon request. The prompt and precise diagnosis of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, nosocomial infections and sexually transmitted infections has an important socio-public impact for the prevention of unnecessary transmission of microorganisms. The skin may function as a mirror of internal organs. The author has tried to include information and unique episodes that have occurred in Japan and are picked up as notes for the readers'curiosity and intelligence. He, as a diagnostic pathologist, sincerely hopes that this textbook helps pathologists, dermatologists and other clinicians make an appropriate diagnosis of skin infections. He strongly believes that proper diagnosis may lead patients to proper treatment and cure, and may contribute to human society by preventing infectious disorders.

This volume reflects the proceedings of the International Conference on Representations of Affine and Quantum Affine Algebras and Their Applications held at North Carolina State University (Raleigh). In recent years, the theory of affine and quantum affine Lie algebras has become an important area of mathematical research with numerous applications in other areas of mathematics and physics. Three areas of recent progress are the focus of this volume: affine and quantum affine algebras and their generalizations, vertex operator algebras and their representations, and applications in combinatorics and statistical mechanics. Talks given by leading international experts at the conference offered both overviews on the subjects and current research results. The book nicely presents the interplay of these topics recently occupying “center stage” in the theory of infinite dimensional Lie theory.

It is a pleasure to introduce this new book, Clinical and Pathological Aspects of Skin Diseases in Endocrine, Metabolic, Nutritional, and Deposition Disease, edited by two of my friends and respected colleagues, Franco Rongioletti and Bruce R. Smoller. In fact, I was very ent- siastic when I learned that they were preparing this work. Although endocrine, metabolic, w, and deposition diseases are regularly included in general textbooks of dermatology and d- matopathology, one gains the general impression that these topics receive little emphasis and are mainly included for completeness. The prospect of having all of this information in one volume, lovingly described and detailed by experts in the feld, should be of great interest not only to dermatologists, pathologists, and dermatopathologists but also to internists and en- crinologists, who may well gain a different perspective on these disorders. As a derma- pathologist, I am also pleased that this project has been organized and undertaken by two distinguished authorities in cutaneous pathology. This assures a close integration of histo- thology and other laboratory techniques with the clinical aspects of these disorders, which will make it possible – perhaps for the frst time – to view these conditions in a truly comprehensive way.
