This interdisciplinary volume brings together new research that broadens our understanding of the multiplicity of voices in the histories of mental ill-health. In the chapters that follow, we hear from people who have experienced mental health difficulties and were on the receiving end of regimens and treatments. Alongside medical notes, we find records of decisions made by a range of people with financial and political agendas. Correspondence with families reminds us that people deemed to be mentally ill were not ciphers; they had their histories, their people, preferences, hopes and losses. The contributions utilise a range of archival materials, oral history, personal testimony, history of art, and literary methodologies and provide novel insights into the voices of individuals, institutions, and communities in an international context. Key overlapping themes divide the volume into four parts: Shifting Perspectives in the Industry of Madness; Reconstructing Patient Perspectives; The Visual and the Material; and Mad Studies and Activism

- Abstract
A still moment captured by a camera's shutter. The rapid fire of the mouse in a tight League of Legends match. The protracted sound of a door closing with finality. In the eighteenth edition of this creative anthology, twenty-six writers explore consonance and assonance that rattle like a chattering jaw, narratives composed of hyperlinked rabbit-holing, and stories that tick with explosive anticipation. Some will make you laugh, others will make you cry, all will feature writing which clicks. In this collection spanning fiction, nonfiction, poetry and the experimental, Australian writers from Monash University and beyond share every class of bric-a-brac, including their most extreme online poems, the stories that keep them up at night, and assembled fragments falling into place.

- Abstract
This book delivers an innovative critical approach to better understand U.S. fiction of the information age, and argues that in the last eighty years, fiction has become increasingly concerned with its representations of mathematical ideas, images, and practices. In so doing, this book provides a fuller, transnational account of the place of mathematics in understanding mathematically informed novels. Literature and science studies have acknowledged and situated historical points of cultural crossover; by emphasising mathematics within this larger intellectual context – and not as an unlikely and alien adjunct to post-war culture – this monograph clarifies how mathematically informed postmodern fictions work in a cognate fashion to other fields undergoing structuralist revolutions. This is especially evident in fiction by the key, mathematically-literate Postmodern authors upon whom this study focuses, namely, Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo, and David Foster Wallace, through which recent the technological revolutions, facilitated by mathematics, manifest in cultural discourse.

- Abstract
A fascinating exploration of George Orwell—and his body of work—by an award-winning Orwellian biographer and scholar, presenting the author anew to twenty-first-century readers. We find ourselves in an era when the moment is ripe for a reevaluation of the life and the works of one of the twentieth century's greatest authors. This is the first twenty-first-century biography on George Orwell, with special recognition to D. J. Taylor's stature as an award-winning biographer and Orwellian. Using new sources that are now available for the first time, we are tantalizingly at the end of the lifespan of Orwell's last few contemporaries, whose final reflections are caught in this book. The way we look at a writer and his canon has changed even over the course of the last two decades; there is a post-millennial prism through which we must now look for such a biography to be fresh and relevant. This is what Orwell: The New Life achieves.

- Abstract
Globally, pork and poultry production has become an extremely competitive industry. There is now more pork consumed in the world than any other meat, yet there is still intense competition for the industry to attract and retain consumers. Consumers continue to demand safe, high quality pork and poultry products at competitive prices compared to other high protein food alternatives. To ensure sustainability of both the pig and poultry industries, producers must endeavour to seek new technologies to improve production efficiency whilst lowering the cost of production and producing a quality product. This edited collection of articles is taken from a series of seminars that brought together some of the world's leading authorities in the field of pig and poultry nutrition and production. The fundamental theme is to re-examine the current trends in productivity within the pig and poultry industries, and to identify nutritional and managerial means to improve competitiveness as well as the quality of the end product. The importance of animal health together with novel strategies for disease control and ways to minimise the environmental impact of pig and poultry production are covered. ‘Gaining the edge in pork and poultry production'is aimed at nutritionists and animal producers as well as students and researchers studying animal and applied biological sciences.

- Abstract
Higher education is a central institution in U.S. democracy. In the 2010s, however, many states that spent previous decades building up their higher education systems began to tear them down. Growing hostility toward higher education reflected changing social forces that remade the politics of U.S. higher education. The political Right became increasingly reliant on angry white voters as higher education became more racially diverse. The Republican party became more closely connected to extremely wealthy donors as higher education became more costly. In Wrecked, Barrett J. Taylor shows how these social changes set a collision course for the Right and higher education. These attacks fed a policy agenda of deinstitutionalization, which encompassed stark divestment from higher education but was primarily characterized by an attack on the institution's social foundation of public trust. In response to these attacks, higher education officials have offered a series of partial defenses that helped higher education to cope in the short-term but did nothing to defend the institution itself against the long-term threat of declining public trust. The failure to address underlying issues of mistrust allowed conflict to escalate to the point at which many states are now wrecking their public higher education systems. Wrecked offers a unique and compelling perspective linking higher education policymaking to broader social and political forces acting in the twenty-first century.

All the information researchers, students, and practitioners need to conducted innovative, state-of-the-art research on small mammals.Rodents and insectivores constitute the vast majority of mammals on our planet, yet we often overlook the importance of this group. As seed dispersers, prey species, and disease regulators, these animals are critical to the functioning of our ecological systems. While considerable material exists that describes these species, there has been no dedicated guide explaining how to effectively research them—until now. Methods for Ecological Research on Terrestrial Small Mammals is a one-stop resource compiling all the information readers need to conduct state-of-the-art research on small terrestrial mammals across the globe. The authors cover the full spectrum of issues, from capture, handling, identification, reproduction, demography, and taxonomy to behavior, diet, evolution, diseases, movements, morphometrics, and more. They also:• highlight the latest techniques while carefully explaining the tried-and-tested methods needed to conduct rigorous scientific inquiries; • provide step-by-step examples and case studies, demonstrating how the methods discussed can be used in actual research projects; • compare and contrast methodologies, analytical techniques, and software packages, helping researchers determine which pathways and tools will yield the best results for their studies. - Abstract
In 1697, a 34-year-old woman mounted her horse and set off on a 3,000-mile journey which over two summers would take her to every county in England. Her name was Celia Fiennes. It was a time when women didn't do such things. It could be gruelling, unhealthy and dangerous. As she discovered, most roads were unsigned, marshy tracks, lodgings could be filthy and vermin-ridden, and highwaymen lay in wait for the unwary. Luckily for us, Celia Fiennes kept a detailed diary about the places she saw and the people she met. She reports on the brutal justice system and political shenanigans of the time, and is fascinated by industry and commerce – workshops, shipping and especially coal-pits and tin mines. What she tells us is significant as the Industrial Revolution would soon change England forever. Yet this remarkable woman and her story have, until now, been largely neglected. In England From a Side-Saddle, historian and journalist Derek J. Taylor seeks to put that right. As we follow the route Celia Fiennes took, we see through her eyes an England of 320 years ago, and learn of the courage, determination and curiosity of one woman who was centuries ahead of her time.

- Abstract
The Booker Prize–nominated author of Derby Day delivers a sumptuous cultural history as seen through the lives of four enigmatic women.Who were the Lost Girls? Chic, glamorous, and bohemian, as likely to be found living in a rat-haunted maisonette as dining at the Ritz, Lys Lubbock, Sonia Brownell, Barbara Skelton, and Janetta Parlade cut a swath through English literary and artistic life at the height of World War II. Three of them had affairs with Lucian Freud. One of them married George Orwell. Another became the mistress of the King of Egypt. They had very different—and sometimes explosive—personalities, but taken together they form a distinctive part of the wartime demographic: bright, beautiful, independent-minded women with tough upbringings who were determined to make the most of their lives in a chaotic time. Ranging from Bloomsbury and Soho to Cairo and the couture studios of Schiaparelli and Hartnell, the Lost Girls would inspire the work of George Orwell, Evelyn Waugh, Anthony Powell, and Nancy Mitford. They are the missing link between the Lost Generation and Bright Young People and the Dionysiac cultural revolution of the 1960s. Sweeping, passionate, and unexpectedly poignant, this is their untold story.

- Abstract
By the middle of the second century BCE, after nearly one hundred years of warfare, Rome had exerted its control over the entire Mediterranean world, forcing the other great powers of the region—Carthage, Macedonia, Egypt, and the Seleucid empire—to submit militarily and financially. But how, despite its relative poverty and its frequent numerical disadvantage in decisive battles, did Rome prevail? Michael J. Taylor explains this surprising outcome by examining the role that manpower and finances played, providing a comparative study that quantifies the military mobilizations and tax revenues for all five powers. Though Rome was the poorest state, it enjoyed the largest military mobilization, drawing from a pool of citizens, colonists, and allies, while its wealthiest adversaries failed to translate revenues into large or successful armies. Taylor concludes that state-level extraction strategies were decisive in the warfare of the period, as states with high conscription and low taxation raised larger, more successful armies than those that primarily sought to maximize taxation. Comprehensive and detailed, Soldiers and Silver offers a new and sophisticated perspective on the political dynamics and economies of these ancient Mediterranean empires.

Taylor brings an ethnographer's eye, ear, and many years of experience to this fictional portrait of life along the US/Mexico desert border. In these linked short stories, readers are taken on a wild ride from San Diego to Nogales, into Mexican and Chicano neighborhoods, failed spas and defunct mining towns, rambling Native American reservations and besieged Wildlife Refuges. Along the way they will share the conflicts, calamities, and occasional triumph of an engaging cast of characters. While these tales treat such familiar border themes as drug- and people-smuggling or hybrid and conflicting cultures and identities, they do so with a literary flair that revels in the rich diversity of border life as well as in its ambiguity, ambivalence, irony and often unexpected humor.

This open access edited collection contributes a new dimension to the study of mental health and psychiatry in the twentieth century. It takes the present literature beyond the ‘asylum and after'paradigm to explore the multitude of spaces that have been permeated by concerns about mental well-being and illness. The chapters in this volume consciously attempt to break down institutional walls and consider mental health through the lenses of institutions, policy, nomenclature, art, lived experience, and popular culture. The book adopts an international scope covering the historical experiences of Britain, Ireland, and North America. In accordance with this broad approach, contributions to the volume span academic fields such as history, arts, literary studies, sociology, and psychology, mirroring the diversity of the subject matter. American higher education is often understood as a vehicle for social advancement. However, the institutions at which students enroll differ widely from one another. Some enjoy tremendous endowment savings and/or collect resources via research, which then offsets the funds that students contribute. Other institutions rely heavily on student tuition payments. These schools may struggle to remain solvent, and their students often bear the lion's share of educational costs. Unequal Higher Education identifies and explains the sources of stratification that differentiate colleges and universities in the United States. Barrett J. Taylor and Brendan Cantwell use quantitative analysis to map the contours of this system. They then explain the mechanisms that sustain it and illustrate the ways in which rising institutional inequality has limited individual opportunity, especially for students of color and low-income individuals.

- Abstract
From a local ballot initiative in Massachusetts, the nuclear weapons freeze movement has grown during the last three years into an important national issue. By 1983, Congress had been asked to consider more than two dozen freeze resolutions, and more than 25% of the voters in the U.S. had the opportunity to vote on state-wide and regional freeze initiatives. This book explores the issues behind the current debate over nuclear weapons and the freeze movement from a wide range of perspectives. The contributors assess the goals and implications of the freeze movement, examine its origins in religious and secular pacifism, explain the amendments to the original freeze proposal introduced in Congress, and discuss the reaction and policies of the Reagan administration. The nuclear freeze movement is placed in an international context with discussions of recent arms negotiations, European views of U.S. policies, and the possible effects of a freeze on NATO allies and on U.S. national security. The book includes a comprehensive annotated bibliography.

- Abstract
A compilation from the Bahá'í Writings on the unity and the equality of all people. The vision offered by the Bahá'í Faith is not merely one of spiritual principles and high ideals but one that provides a practical roadmap for community building and the elimination of prejudice of all kinds. While global and universal in scope, the Faith's writings place a spotlight on the United States in particular. These writings emphasize the vital need to address the issues of race within the country and paint a picture of a hopeful and glorious destiny to which the American people can rise. With texts stretching from the latter half of the nineteenth century right up to the present day, The Power of Unity contains timeless spiritual wisdom accompanied by insight designed to put that wisdom into practice in the modern age. With a foreword by Dr. Robert C. Henderson.

- Abstract
The Journals of Clarence R. Smyth (Physical Medium) is the sequel to The Diaries of a Gifted Edwardian Boy and continues the story of the extraordinary Clarence R. Smyth as told in his own words and in his own interesting and amusing way. Clarence was born on the 1st of January 1900 in London, England, and showed unique psychic abilities from an early age, which caused him to be on a ‘watch list'because of the accurate predictions. Kidnapped whilst in Berlin with his British diplomat father just at the outbreak of the First World War, Clarence is initially forced to use his abilities for a branch of German intelligence but is then incarcerated. After the war, thinking his family have disowned him, Clarence, who now only has German papers, decides to study art in Vienna to be with his German sweetheart, Maria, whom he eventually marries. Clarence qualifies and then works successfully as a stage designer but he is more renown as a medium, eventually travelling, doing shows of physical medium-ship. In Germany, this enables him to gather information for the allies. After a close brush with death, Clarence decides to relocate his family to Switzerland just before the outbreak of the Second World War, where he establishes ‘light centres'to counteract all the evil happening around. After the war, Clarence helps to expose some perpetrators of evil working for the US Army, with his abilities. Clarence spends the 1950s in New York but becomes disillusioned with the politics of the era, so he relocates back to Zurich with his extended family but ill health eventually forces him to return to the US in his senior years, with his gifted granddaughter Sophia in tow, as she is now at risk, as he was, by this evil cabal that has always monitored and tried to control his life.

- Abstract
'Fake news.''Dishonest press.''Racist.''Mentally unstable.'The insults President Donald Trump and the American news media hurl at each other are nothing new. In Tudor England, printed papers branded the monarch a'horrible monster'and were in turn accused of publishing'false fables'. Ever since the invention of the printing press, those in power have seen mass communication as a dangerous threat that usurps their ability to tell people what to think and is capable of stirring up discontent – or even rebellion. In Fayke Newes, historian and international journalist Derek Taylor tracks this long and bloody fight between the press and those in power, through the lives of the men and women who got caught up in the battle. On a journey through the centuries, we criss-cross the Atlantic between Britain and America and discover that neither governments nor journalists have always told the truth.

- Abstract
The new and updated seventh edition of Political Geography once again shows itself fit to tackle a frequently and rapidly changing geopolitical landscape. It retains the intellectual clarity, rigour and vision of previous editions based upon its world-systems approach, and is complemented by the perspective of feminist geography. The book successfully integrates the complexity of individuals with the complexity of the world-economy by merging the compatible, but different, research agendas of the co-authors. This edition explores the importance of states in corporate globalization, challenges to this globalization, and the increasingly influential role of China. It also discusses the dynamics of the capitalist world-economy and the constant tension between the global scale of economic processes and the territorialization of politics in the current context of geopolitical change. The chapters have been updated with new examples – new sections on art and war, intimate geopolitics and geopolitical constructs reflect the vibrancy and diversity of the academic study of the subject. Sections have been updated and added to the material of the previous edition to reflect the role of the so-called Islamic State in global geopolitics. The book offers a framework to help students make their own judgements of how we got where we are today, and what may or should be done about it.Political Geography remains a core text for students of political geography, geopolitics, international relations and political science, as well as more broadly across human geography and the social sciences.

- Abstract
'Derek Taylor has written a comprehensive and highly readable biography which will restore Adler to his true place in history.'--Elkan D Levy •••Nathan Marcus Adler remains the longest serving Chief Rabbi in the history of Anglo-Jewry. Yet today he is a shadowy figure. During his ministry the forerunners of Jewish Care were created, the synagogue service was regularized, Jews'College opened its doors, and the United Synagogue came into existence. At the same time, where countries like America and Germany were moving over to Progressive Judaism, the British community remained resolutely Orthodox. All this was down to Adler. These were not easy achievements for him. For 45 years, most of the time in partnership with Sir Moses Montefiore as the lay leader, Adler successfully resisted every attempt to undermine his authority. He was the ultimate diplomat, negotiator and leader of his flock. Furthermore, a great deal of what he accomplished remains at the core of the community today. This book uncovers much new material. It examines for the first time the first half of his life in a prejudiced Germany, the attempt to assassinate him, the truth about the Singer Prayer Book, the politics in his election and why, as a newcomer to Britain, he always had such powerful support. Author Taylor also delves into the methods he chose to coax and cajole the lay leaders into his way of thinking, and how he achieved his goals. Nathan Marcus Adler is and has always been underestimated, a deliberate ploy on his part. It is now time he is recognized as a highly successful Chief Rabbi in a turbulent period of the community's history. [Subject: Biography, Jewish Studies, Religious Studies, Orthodox Judaism]

- Abstract
The English are often confused about who they are. They say ‘British'when they mean ‘English', and ‘English'when they should say ‘British.'But when England, more than the rest of the UK, voted to leave the EU, polls showed national identity was a big concern. So it's time the English sorted out in their minds what it means to be English. A nation's character is moulded by its history. And in ‘Who Do the English Think They Are?'historian and journalist, Derek J. Taylor travels the length and breadth of the country to find answers. He discovers that the first English came from Germany, and then in the later Middle Ages almost became French. He tracks down the origins of English respect for the rule of law, tolerance and a love of political stability. And, when he reaches Victorian times, he investigates the arrogance and snobbishness that have sometimes blighted English behaviour. Finally, Taylor looks ahead. He asks – faced with uncharted waters post-Brexit, what is it is in their national character that will help guide the English people now?

- Abstract
Originally published in 1984. Australia is a resource-rich country deriving a significant proportion of its export earnings from trade in these resources. At the same time, the country is young, sparsely populated beyond the coastal fringe, particularly in the resource-rich areas, and environmentally fragile. The consequences of resource exploitation in these areas have far-reaching policy implications. A range of these concerns is canvassed in this volume, encompassing the views of policy-makers, planners and academics. Five chapters address social and economic impacts ranging over manufacturing and tertiary industry, immigration and labour markets, employment and population and the provision of educational facilities. Many of these are seen in microcosm in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. Two contributions offer an international perspective, one in another federal system – Canada – and one where Australian interests are participating in resource extraction – Papua New Guinea. The issues raised are fundamental to Australia's development in the 1980's and of importance to everyone connected with the development and planning of Australia's future.
