- Abstract
This monograph takes the reader through recent advances in data-driven methods and machine learning for problems in science—specifically in continuum physics. It develops the foundations and details a number of scientific machine learning approaches to enrich current computational models of continuum physics, or to use the data generated by these models to infer more information on these problems. The perspective presented here is drawn from recent research by the author and collaborators. Applications drawn from the physics of materials or from biophysics illustrate each topic. Some elements of the theoretical background in continuum physics that are essential to address these applications are developed first. These chapters focus on nonlinear elasticity and mass transport, with particular attention directed at descriptions of phase separation. This is followed by a brief treatment of the finite element method, since it is the most widely used approach to solve coupled partial differential equations in continuum physics. With these foundations established, the treatment proceeds to a number of recent developments in data-driven methods and scientific machine learning in the context of the continuum physics of materials and biosystems. This part of the monograph begins by addressing numerical homogenization of microstructural response using feed-forward as well as convolutional neural networks. Next is surrogate optimization using multifidelity learning for problems of phase evolution. Graph theory bears many equivalences to partial differential equations in its properties of representation and avenues for analysis as well as reduced-order descriptions--all ideas that offer fruitful opportunities for exploration. Neural networks, by their capacity for representation of high-dimensional functions, are powerful for scale bridging in physics--an idea on which we present a particular perspective in the context of alloys. One of the most compelling ideas in scientific machine learning is the identification of governing equations from dynamical data--another topic that we explore from the viewpoint of partial differential equations encoding mechanisms. This is followed by an examination of approaches to replace traditional, discretization-based solvers of partial differential equations with deterministic and probabilistic neural networks that generalize across boundary value problems. The monograph closes with a brief outlook on current emerging ideas in scientific machine learning.

- Abstract
Sourdough fermentation was probably one of the first microbial processes employed by mankind for the production and preservation of food. This practice is still widely used worldwide due to the distinct sensorial and health properties attributed to these products. Traditional sourdough bread is achieved by spontaneous fermentations, leading to natural selections of microorganisms (mainly yeast and lactic acid bacteria) with health benefits for the consumers'microbiota. However, multiple opportunities are currently underexploited through the entire sourdough value chain. Sourdough Innovations: Novel Uses of Metabolites, Enzymes, and Microbiota from Sourdough Processing summarizes the latest scientific knowledge and current opportunities of sourdough technology at biomass, microbiota and enzymatic levels described in three distinctive sections.Section I covers the fermentation process of cereals and non-cereals to produce sourdough-containing compounds with health-enhancement benefits. Section II includes novel advances in sourdough enzymology, and last, Section III explores various applications of sourdough microbiota as antimicrobial and probiotic microorganisms and opportunities to be included in both food and non-food applications.Key Features: Includes extensive information on the use of innovative or emerging technologies aiming to promote circular exploitation systems. Promotes the full use of the cereal and non-cereal sourdough metabolites. Covers the functionality of sourdough microorganisms and functional compounds, and future exploitation of some of them in the field of nutraceuticals or functional foods. Sourdough Innovations is unique in its examination of health beneficial compounds through the downstream processing of sourdough from cereals, microbiota, and enzymes. It is a great source for academic staff and scientists within the broad area of food science who are researching, lecturing, or developing their professional careers in food microbiology, food chemistry, food processing, and food technology, including bio-process engineers interested in the development of novel technological improvements in sourdough processing.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
This substantial collection of newly commissioned essays presents an ambitious, entertaining, and accessible guide to developments in Asian art over the past 20 years of the epoch of globalization. The term ‘global Asia'signals the genesis and evolution of contemporary art within the context of global economic, social, political, and intellectual change related to the end of the Cold War, decolonization, the emergence of postcolonial societies and cultures, and the rise of a global contemporary art world. In the handbook its editors establish, in an extended introductory section and in four section introductions, the theoretical, geographical, and historical parameters within which the contemporary visual arts of ‘global Asia'may be described, analyzed, and evaluated. The collected chapters provide a diverse, multiauthored, heterogeneous, and genuinely plural account of art and its contexts. The democratic and inclusive character of globalization is reflected and produced within this anthology, which includes different styles of writing as well as varieties of analytic and thematic focus. The anthology will appeal to both scholars and students in art history, art practice, curation, contemporary art, fine art, cultural studies, and globalization studies.

- Abstract

- Abstract
In Advances in Chemistry Research. Volume 61, the classical and modern scientific references discussing the applications of charged particles are analyzed. Mathematical models of electrostatic coagulation, sorption, sedimentation of particles in the electric field, increases in wettability of a surface of particles are proposed. The authors discuss the chemistry, synthesis, structural modifications and photophysical properties of the fluorescein moiety, with special emphasis on the detection of metal ions such as Cu(II), Zn(II), Hg(II) and Fe(III) using spectrophotometric methods. Next, the geometric analysis and simulation reproduction of empirically extracted peptide coverage ratio, Θ, over a nano-gold colloid surface was conducted by assuming a prolate shape of all tested amyloidogenic peptides. The following study highlights the role of analytical instrumentation and analytical methods in assessing the quality of pharmaceutical drugs. Attaining a high quality of finished products in the pharmaceutical industry is an incessant challenge that necessitates the development of fast and accurate analytical methods. In closing, the adsorption characteristics of methylene blue on purified bagasse bottom ash are investigated. The purified bagasse bottom ash adsorbent was prepared through purification of a crude BBA obtained from a sugarcane industry using a mixed solution of HCl 0.1 mol/L and HF 0.3 mol/L and followed by HNO3 5 mol/L.

- Abstract
As a nontoxic, chemically stable, and frequently occurring material with various valuable electronic and optoelectronic properties titanium dioxide (TiO2) has great potential for innumerable applications. The broad range of properties and applications can even be extended by using nanostructured TiO2. In addition, nanostructured TiO2 systems offer a high surface area, single crystal structures, and shape related scattering facilities. In spite of intensive research on this material in the past, many properties which are essential for various applications are not yet understood or even controllable. In this book, fundamental questions of the growth mechanism, the position-controlled fabrication, and the optical and electronic properties of rutile TiO2 nanorods are discussed. At the beginning, the properties of TiO2 are listed in detail. Subsequently, the preparation of suitable seed layers for the hydrothermal growth of rutile TiO2 nanorods on various substrates is described in detail. A chapter dealing with the hydrothermal growth process itself explains the origin and importance of the fine structure in these rods. Furthermore, new low-cost and efficient lithography techniques such as a scanning probe and a laser-induced melting technique are introduced for the structured growth of these nanorods. The resulting superstructures are compared with those of conventional electron-beam lithography. In addition to a variety of possible applications of such structures, some aspects of their light scattering properties are discussed in this book. Finally, the electronic properties of these nanorods are presented and the influence of crystal defects on the bias and time-dependent transition current is described.

- Abstract
From the rise of chemical technology in antiquity to the present day, Igniting the Chemical Ring of Fire tracks the development of professional chemistry communities in the countries of the Pacific Rim. Critical in this process was the development of local education and training in chemistry. The doctorate in chemistry is generally regarded as coming into existence in early 19th century Germany, with the model spreading globally as time passed. In early years it was common for international chemistry scholars to train at the ranking German or English universities before returning to their home countries to seed a local version of the doctorate. However, little has been formally written about this process outside of Europe.Representing a first in the field for countries of the Pacific Rim, this book documents the detailed history of chemical communities in ten countries from a team of internationally renowned historians. Providing insights into how and when these countries initiated local chemistry PhD programs and became independent chemical entities, Igniting the Chemical Ring of Fire shows that there is no single path to development.

- Abstract
Modular heap analysis techniques analyze a program by computing summaries for every procedure in the program that describes its effects on an input heap, using pre-computed summaries for the called procedures. In A Framework For Efficient Modular Heap Analysis, the focus is on a family of modular heap analyses that summarize a procedure's heap effects using a context-independent, shape-graph-like summary that is agnostic to the aliasing in the input heap. These analyses are very efficient but their complexity and the absence of a theoretical formalization and correctness proofs makes it hard to produce correct extensions and modifications of these algorithms - whether to improve precision or scalability or to compute more information. A Framework For Efficient Modular Heap Analysis presents a modular heap analysis framework that generalizes these four analyses. It formalizes this framework as an abstract interpretation and establishes the correctness and termination guarantees. It formalizes the four analyses as instances of the framework. The formalization explains the basic principle behind such modular analyses and simplifies the task of producing extensions and variations of such analyses. A Framework For Efficient Modular Heap Analysis is written with exceptional clarity and is a delightful read for program analysis experts and novices alike.

1 The International Workshop on Recon?gurable Computing (ARC) started in 2005 in Algarve, Portugal. The major motivation was to create an event where on-going research e?orts as well as more elaborated, interesting and hi- quality work on applied recon?gurable computing could be presented and d- cussed. Over the last couple of years recon?gurable computing has become a we- known and established research area producing interesting as well as important results in both general and embedded computing systems. It is also getting more and more interest from industry which is attracted by the (design and development)?exibility as well as the performance improvements that can be expected from this technology. As recon?gurablecomputing has blurred the gap between software and hardware, some even speak of a radical new programming paradigm opening a new realm of unseen applications and opportunities. The logo of the ARC workshop is the Nonius, a measurement instrument used in the Portuguese period of discoveries that was invented by Pedro Nunes, a Portuguesemathematician. As the logo suggests, the main motto of ARC is to help to navigate the world of recon?gurable computing. Driven by this motto, we hope ARC contributes to solid advances on recon?gurable computing.
