Uncovering the principles governing the origin and fate of biodiversity is the central goal of modern biology. The first edition (2014) of this novel textbook drew on more than two decades of research in microbial experimental evolution to provide a sketch of a general, empirically grounded theory of biodiversity and the first synthetic treatment of experimental evolution. It has since become an indispensable resource to research laboratories around the world as an essential introduction to the field. However, the science has moved on considerably over the last decade and an updated and expanded treatment of the subject is now timely. Three developments bearing directly on the issue of the nature of biodiversity now deserve particular attention and inclusion: (1) The introduction of high-throughput tools to capture the detailed dynamics of genetic variation are revealing that adaptation is a far more complex process than previously anticipated; (2) A rapidly expanding literature on adaptation and diversification in the kinds of physically complex, multispecies assemblages thought to characterize natural communities; and (3) A growing literature on the evolution of novelty and innovation that takes advantage of the unique features of microbial evolution experiments to study both the ecology and genetics of this process. In this second edition the author updates existing analyses with more recent work, expands on existing chapters to include the most important new ideas, and incorporates three new chapters (parallel and convergent evolution; the evolution of novelty and innovation; coevolution), detailing their respective contributions to our improved understanding of adaptation and diversification. Experimental Evolution and the Nature of Biodiversity is an accessible, upper level textbook aimed principally at graduate students and practising researchers interested in the evolution of biodiversity, particularly through the lens of experimental evolution.

This volume presents a series of case studies, at different levels of inclusivity, of how organisms exhibit functional convergence as a key evolutionary mechanism resulting in responses to similar environmental constraints in mechanically similar ways. The contributors to this volume have selected and documented cases of convergent evolution of form and function that are perceived to be driven by environmental abiotic and/or biotic challenges that fall within their areas of expertise. Collectively these chapters explore this phenomenon across a broad phylogenetic spectrum. The sequence of chapters follows the organizational principle of increasing phylogenetic inclusivity, rather than the clustering of chapters by perceived similarity of the phenotypic features or biomechanical challenges being considered. This is done to maintain focus on the evolutionary phenomenon that is the primary subject matter of the book, thereby providing a basis for discussion among the readership about whatis necessary and sufficient to justify the recognition of functional convergence. All chapters stress the need for integrative approaches for the elucidation of both pattern and process as they relate to convergence at various taxonomic levels.

Symbolic Approaches to Modeling and Analysis of Biological Systems presents contributions of formal methods from computer science for modeling the dynamics of biological systems. Die Epoche vom Beginn der Neuzeit bis zum Ende des Dreißigjährigen Krieges stand europaweit ganz im Zeichen des Gegensatzes zwischen Frankreich und dem Habsburgerreich. Fünf Kriege hatten Kaiser Karl V. und sein Rivale Franz I. miteinander geführt, der auch für sich die Kaiserkrone reklamierte. Erst der Westfälische Frieden hatte zu einem gewissen Ausgleich dieses Spannungsverhältnisses geführt. Aber neben der großen Politik bestanden auch andere Beziehungen. So gab es intensive Kontakte durch Kaufleute, Handwerker und Studenten. Deutsche studierten an der Pariser Universität, deutsche Handwerker arbeiteten in Frankreich, deutsche Kaufleute siedelten in Lyon, wie französische in Frankfurt. So kam es zu einem breiten Kulturtransfer zwischen den Territorien des Reichs und Frankreich, die aber auch zu einem Bild des Anderen, des Fremden wie zu einem Selbstbild beitrugen und damit letztlich zu Frühformen eines nationalen Bewusstseins.

In response to various environmental cues and cellular stress, cells need to modify their protein expression pattern for proper cell functioning. The cell experiences diverse cellular stress as oxidative, genotoxic, and etc. The damage of the genome by certain chemicals or agents affects the cell integrity and leads to genotoxic stress. As such, this compilation discusses how different cellular stresses affect the polyadenylation process and modulate the polyadenylation machinery. Cytoplasmic polyadenylation plays an important role in oocyte maturation, mitotic cell cycle progression, cellular senescence and synaptic plasticity. Poly(A) tails can be elongated post-transcriptionally by noncanonical poly(A) polymerases, which can impact cells with limited transcriptional activity. A recent study is discussed wherein it is shown that that alternative cleavage and polyadenylation isoform expression influences about 10% of targeting by miRNAs between any two cell types analysed and, more importantly, that the accuracy of target prediction can be improved if the cellular alternative cleavage and polyadenylation profile is considered. The authors go on to focus on how altering the polyadenylation process and components of RNA polyadenylation machinery leads to abnormal physiological conditions. The targeting of elements of RNA polyadenylation machinery as therapeutics in clinical research is also discussed. The majority of eukaryotic mRNAs are polyadenylated at their 3´end. This poly(A) tail is not encoded by DNA and is added co-transcriptionally. Cleavage and polyadenylation specific factor (CPSF1) is part of multiple subunit factors required for a site-specific cleavage, which is involved in determining specificity and efficency of the 3´ end processing of pre-mRNAs in the nucleus by recognizing the polyadenylation signal. Following this, mutations in the poly(A) signal (AAUAAA hexamer) present in the globin pre-mRNA were identified in hematological disorders caused by defects in the synthesis of one or more of the globin chains (thalassemia). The point mutation AATAAA to AACAAA of a human β-globin gene detected in 1985 in DNA from a patient with β-thalassemia led to the formation of an elongated β-globin mRNA isoform. This compilation addresses how RNA processing at the pre-mRNA level occurs in the cell nucleus and regulates gene expression. Newly synthesized mRNA contains a poly(A) tail, which is added through canonical polyadenylation coupled to transcription. Canonical mRNA 3´ processing involves endonucleolytic cleavage within the pre-mRNA sequences and the addition of a poly(A) tail to the upstream cleavage fragment. The closing chapter discusses how the poly(A) tail at the 3´end of the majority of eukaryotic messenger RNAs (mRNAs), with the exception of histone transcripts, is not simply a static entity but more likely a dynamic matter. Its length added to an mRNA is regulated by the concerted action of poly(A) polymerases and deadenylases.
