In einer ersten umfassenden Darstellung der österreichischen Protestantismusgeschichte der Jahre 1933/34 bis 1968 fragt Leonhard Jungwirth nicht nur nach den generationenspezifischen Modi evangelisch-österreichischer Vergangenheitsbewältigung und den daraus abgeleiteten, unterschiedlichen und bis heute fortwirkenden kirchenpolitischen Handlungszielen. Auch die zugrunde liegende Vergangenheit, die Geschichte des österreichischen Protestantismus in'Ständestaat'und Nationalsozialismus, wird im Lichte bislang unbearbeiteter Quellen und aktueller Fragestellungen neu erarbeitet.

Der Kulturverein „Deutsches Kulturwerk Europäischen Geistes“ war zeitweise die zweitgrößte rechtsextreme Gruppierung der Bundesrepublik nach der NPD. Die 1950 vom ehemaligen NS-Kulturfunktionär Herbert Böhme gegründete Organisation diente mit dem Türmer-Verlag und ihren Zeitschriften als Plattform für frühere NS-Schriftsteller und völkische Autoren. In über 120 Ortsvereinen organisierte sie bis zur Auflösung 1996 Dichterlesungen, Vorträge und'Brauchtumsabende'. Die Studie untersucht die Strukturen des Vereins, die Verbindungen zu rechten Gruppen und politischen Parteien sowie dessen Einflussversuche. Außerdem analysiert sie über 500 literarische Texte hinsichtlich des ideologischen Gehalts. In this book the use of hybrid simulation in delivery room emergencies is described and shown. The use of a patient actor combined with a task trainer within the same session substantially improve the training for practical management of intrapartum emergencies in real life, reducing the risk of failure of operative vaginal delivery and of related adverse events, including perinatal or maternal complications. Les tribus hongroises venues des steppes asiatiques au cours des 9e-10e siècles ont occupé et peuplé la partie du milieu de l'Europe centrale, la zone située entre les chaînes de montagnes des Alpes et des Carpates, traversée par les cours d'eau du Danube et de la Tisza. L'adoption du christianisme, la fondation de l'État, puis la mise en place de l'administration étatique de type occidental ont commencé en Hongrie avec un retard de plusieurs centaines d'années sur les pays d'Europe occidentale. À partir du milieu du 16e siècle, le développement du pays a été brutalement arrêté à la suite des guerres perdues contre l'Empire ottoman, suivies de la soumission de la Hongrie à l'Empire des Habsbourg « libérateurs » qui ont régné sur le pays jusqu'à la fin de la Première Guerre mondiale. Il est vrai cependant que pendant la seconde moitié du 19e siècle la modification des rapports entre l'Autriche et la Hongrie a permis à cette dernière à réaliser des progrès notables dans les domaines économique et social. Les combats sanglants contre des puissances oppressives, tels que la guerre d'indépendance conduite par le prince François II Rákóczi, la révolution et la guerre d'indépendance de 1848-1849 ou la révolution de 1956 contre l'empire soviétique ont renforcé la volonté de la nation de mettre en oeuvre une politique économique fructueuse. Incluse dans la sphère d'influence de l'Union soviétique après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la Hongrie a néanmoins réussi à s'accaparer la position de « caserne la plus heureuse » et de « pays vitrine » au sein du système d'économie planifiée de type soviétique. It is well recognized that blood could be the optimal site for evaluating cancer, allowing easy and repeated access for determining prognosis, establishing molecular targets, evaluating the efficacy of therapy, detecting the earliest signs of recurrence, and even detecting cancer at its earliest and most curable stages. The analysis of cancer through blood samples is now known as the liquid biopsy and has been a rich source of research and clinical application. There has been an explosion of interest and progress in liquid biopsy technologies since the first edition of this book. The second edition will expand its focus to now include not only circulating tumor cells (CTC), but also other emerging aspects of the liquid biopsy, including circulating tumor DNA and methylated DNA (ctDNA, ct meDNA), ctRNA, ct miRNA, circulating tumor proteins (and other) biomarkers and circulating tumor derived exosomes (ctExosomes). CTC play a central role in tumor dissemination and metastasis,and have been established as an important evaluative and research tool in advanced cancer, and potentially important in early stage disease. CTC defines tumor cells circulating in blood, while Disseminated Tumor Cells (DTC) refers to tumor cells identified in bone marrow. CTC/DTC are extremely rare events, even in late stage cancer, and their detection has presented enormous technical challenges, with the emergence of multiple technologies developed to address these challenges, including enrichment, identification and sophisticated analytical techniques to evaluate CTC and other cells in circulation that may also be important in the biology of metastasis. As foundational as CTC/DTC has been, the field of liquid biopsy has expanded well beyond these analytes. The relevance of circulating nucleic acids derived from tumor cells has quickly progressed from research to the clinic. There are now well established clinical applications for using ctDNA/RNA to determine therapeutic targets, follow disease progression and detect cancer recurrence long before routine clinical methods. One of the most exciting new areas of work is the possibility of using these circulating tumor derived nucleic acids to detect cancer at its earliest and potentially most curable stages. Another new and burgeoning area is the detection and analysis of ctExosomes. This book is a continuance of the topic: “DAMPs in Human Diseases”, the basics of which were described in a first volume by the same author. This second volume presents our current understanding of the impact of sterile stress/injury-induced innate immune responses on the etiopathogenesis of human diseases by focusing on those diseases that are pathogenetically dominated by DAMPs, i.e., on polytrauma, various solid organ injuries (brain, lung, kidney, liver), atherosclerosis, and cerebro-cardiovascular diseases. The Exorcist of Sombor examines the life course, practice and mentality of an eighteenth-century Franciscan friar, based on his own letters and documentation, creating a frame around the tightly packed history of events that took place between 1766-1769, and analysing the series of exorcism scandals that erupted in the Hungarian town of Sombor, from the perspectives of social history and cultural history. The author employs a method which reflects historical anthropology, the history of ideas and the influence of Italian microhistory. Based on the activity of an exorcist priest in the early modern period, the documents of the ecclesiastical courts and a considerable body of autograph correspondence are thoroughly examined. Analysing these letters gives the reader a chance to come into close proximity with the way of thinking of a person from the eighteenth century. The research questions in connection to the documentation aim to identify the causes for the conflict. How was it possible to have'correct'and'wrong'methods of exorcism within the practice of one and the same church? What sort of criteria were used when certain previously accepted practices were dubbed superstitious in the second half of the eighteenth century? What were the changes that took place in the attitude of priests and friars within the ecclesiastical society of the period? How can a conflict be focussed on a practice (healing by exorcism) which has roots going back thousands of years? How many different variants of demonology existed in the clerical thinking of the age? Compared to Western-European countries, the adoption of Christianity, the founding of the state, then the establishment of the inherent western-type state administration has begun in the Hugarian Kingdom several hundred years later, from the 11th Century. From the middle of the 16th Century, this process was wrecked by the losing wars against the Ottoman Empire, followed by the subjection to the Habsburg Empire. Armed, blood-stumbled fighting against oppressive powers, the Revolution and War of Independence in 1848-1849 or the 1956 Revolution against the Soviet Empire have all increased the determination of the nation for implementing a successful economic policy. Hungary, losing in World War I and II, came into the Soviet Union's sphere of influence, but was able to hold the position of the « happiest barrack » and « showcase country » within the Soviet-type planned economy system. Financial aspects of a raw market economy following the disintegration of the socialism, as well as that of an active state operation after 2010 may both provide interesting pieces of information.

This book addresses the biological processes relevant to the immune phenotypes of cancer and their significance for immune responsiveness, based on the premise that malignant cells manipulate their surroundings through an evolutionary process that is controlled by interactions with innate immune sensors as well as the adaptive recognition of self/non-self. Non-destructive testing (NDT) analysis techniques are used in science, technology and medicine to evaluate the properties of a material, component or system, without causing damage or altering the article being inspected. Well known and widely used in industrial applications since the 60s, the NDT market is developing and growing fast. This book focuses on electromagnetic NDT methods and more specifically on the motion induced eddy current testing and evaluation (MIECTE) techniques used for conductive materials via electromagnetic methods, focusing on the Lorentz force eddy current testing (LET) method which was introduced recently. The authors present the modelling and simulation of LET systems as well as the optimal design of the measurement setups. This book investigates the maintenance of multilingualism and minority languages in 12 different minority communities across Europe, all of which are underrepresented in international minority language studies. The book presents a number of case studies covering a broad range of highly diverse minorities and languages with different historical and socio-political backgrounds. Despite current legislation and institutional and educational support, the authors surmise there is no guarantee for the maintenance of minority languages, suggesting changes in attitudes and language ideologies are the key to promoting true multilingualism. The book also introduces a new tool, the European Language Vitality Barometer, for assessing the maintenance of minority languages on the basis of survey data. The book is based on the European Language Diversity for All (ELDIA) research project which was funded by the European Commission (7th framework programme, 2010–2013).

Noha az új megközelítések révén nemcsak a szemlélet változott meg, de tudásunk is bővült, a mai napig adós maradt a kutatás azzal, hogy miként is alakultak a németség mindennapjai a kérdéses időszakban, vajon az országosan kirajzolódó képet a helyi viszonyok feltérképezése is alátámasztja-e, s egyáltalán térben és időben miként érdemes a Volksbund-jelenséget differenciálnunk. Non-territorial autonomy (NTA) is a statecraft tool that is increasingly gaining importance in societies seeking to accommodate demands by ethno-cultural groups for a voice in cultural affairs important to the protection and preservation of their identity, such as language, education, and religion. As states recognize the specific rights of identity minorities in multicultural and multi-ethnic societies, they are faced with a need to improve their diversity management regimes. NTA offers policy-makers a range of options for institutional design adaptable to specific circumstances and historical legacies. It devolves degrees of power through legal frameworks and institutions in specific areas of ethno-cultural life, while maintaining social unity at the core level of society. Throughout Europe and North America, NTA exists and is implemented at a state, regional, and local level. Much has been written about the concept of autonomy and its usage as a statecraft tool in states facing regional division, but little literature addresses its non-territorial institutional and public administration functions. This edited volume seeks to fill this gap. Managing Diversity through Non-Territorial Autonomy: Assessing Advantages, Deficiencies, and Risks, carves a space for contextual knowledge production on NTA in law, as well as social and political sciences. Contextual knowledge involves a description of institutions and their functionality as well as of the institutional and legal frames protecting these. What are the institutions, bodies, and functions that ethno-cultural groups can draw on when seeking to have a voice over their own affairs, as well as over issues in society related to their identity production? How are these entities incorporated and empowered to have a voice? What degree of voice do they have, and how are they designed to project this voice? Thus, contextual knowledge also involves critical assessment and risk analysis as well as penetrating insights as to the unintended consequences and hidden agendas that may inform NTA policies. This volume is to provide both policy-makers and ethno-cultural groups with a tool-kit that promotes social cohesion while respecting diversity. This is the first volume in a series of five which will examine the protection and representation of minorities through non-territorial means.

The demand for new and effective methods for the evaluation, maintenance and live-time testing of objects in fields as diverse as engineering, medicine and art, continues to grow. Electromagnetic non-destructive evaluation is a process by which an object can be assessed without permanent alteration by means of inducing electric currents or magnetic fields within the object and observing the electromagnetic response. This book presents selected papers from the 18th International Workshop on Electromagnetic Non-destructive Evaluation (ENDE), which was held in Bratislava, Slovak Republic, on June 25-28, 2013. The aim of the workshop was to provide an international forum for the discussion of the state-of-the-art and perspectives in the field from the view of science, technology and engineering. The book is divided into five main sections: advanced sensors; analytical and numerical modeling and biomedical applications; innovative industrial applications; new developments; and, solutions of inverse problems. The book provides a unique collection of in-depth mathematical, statistical, and modeling methods and techniques for life sciences, as well as their applications in a number of areas within life sciences. The book provides also with a range of new ideas that represent emerging frontiers in life sciences where the application of such quantitative methods and techniques is becoming increasingly important. Many areas within life sciences are becoming increasingly quantitative and the progress in those areas will be more and more dependent on the successful development of advanced mathematical, statistical and modelling methodologies and techniques. The field of'intelligent interfaces and systems'has seen a fast growth last decade. An impressive number of papers, conference tutorials, and volumes were devoted to the topic. Ten years ago, intelligent systems constituted a rather exotic topic and many were skeptic that such systems amount to more than a nice name. Nowadays, intelligent systems represent a powerful tool in many applications, in all industrial fields. Their development evolved on both the horizontal dimension, with a constantly increasing number of applications, and on the vertical dimension, by including more capabilities going from sensoric to neurofuzzy systems, intelligent agents, speech and image understanding, and decision making in complex environments. The domain constituted by the intelligent systems is now too large to be covered in a single volume. Consequently, the Editors considered a balance between several selected sub-fields, to insure the unity of the volume, yet allowing a large enough horizon and a consistent understanding of the entire field, including real-life applications. The volume represents a comprehensive coverage of the field, including fundamental aspects, software-, sensors-, and hardware-related issues. In this book, a brief description of sampling strategies, preservation and handling of environmental samples (liquids, solids and air) are commented on, with particular emphasis on the subsequent cadmium determination. The main analytical techniques for cadmium determination are briefly described, and they are compared in base on their advantages and drawbacks. In addition, the use of automatic analyzers for environmental monitoring are also described, as well as the main sample pre-treatment methods for liquid and solid environmental samples. Well-established methodologies and current trends are reviewed for cadmium determination in environmental matrices such as water, soils, sediments, biota, and atmospheric particulate matter. In addition, cadmium speciation, mainly cadmium fractionation in soil, sediment, sludge and atmospheric particulate matter (BCR method), and isolation and separation of cadmium bound to metallothioneis in biota is reviewed. Finally, a source of literature on standard and official methods for cadmium determination in environmental materials is provided in this book.
