Generation of electricity from renewable sources has become a necessity, particularly due to environmental concerns. In order for renewable sources to provide reliable power, their sporadic availability under certain conditions and the lack of control over the resource must be addressed. Different renewable energy sources and storage technologies bring various properties to the table, and power systems must be adapted and constructed to accommodate these. Power electronics and micro-grids play key roles in enabling the use of renewable energy in the evolving smarter grids.

This volume discusses advances in applied nonlinear optimal control, comprising both theoretical analysis of the developed control methods and case studies about their use in robotics, mechatronics, electric power generation, power electronics, micro-electronics, biological systems, biomedical systems, financial systems and industrial production processes. The advantages of the nonlinear optimal control approaches which are developed here are that, by applying approximate linearization of the controlled systems'state-space description, one can avoid the elaborated state variables transformations (diffeomorphisms) which are required by global linearization-based control methods. The book also applies the control input directly to the power unit of the controlled systems and not on an equivalent linearized description, thus avoiding the inverse transformations met in global linearization-based control methods and the potential appearance of singularity problems. The method adopted here also retains the known advantages of optimal control, that is, the best trade-off between accurate tracking of reference setpoints and moderate variations of the control inputs. The book's findings on nonlinear optimal control are a substantial contribution to the areas of nonlinear control and complex dynamical systems, and will find use in several research and engineering disciplines and in practical applications.

Classical synchronous motors are the most effective device to drive industrial production systems and robots with precision and rapidity. However, numerous applications require efficient controls in non-conventional situations. Synchronous motors are indubitably the most effective device to drive industrial production systems and robots with precision and rapidity. Their control law is thus critical for combining at the same time high productivity to reduced energy consummation. As far as possible, the control algorithms must exploit the properties of these actuators. Therefore, this work draws on well adapted models resulting from the Park's transformation, for both the most traditional machines with sinusoidal field distribution and for machines with non-sinusoidal field distribution which are more and more used in industry. Both, conventional control strategies like vector control (either in the synchronous reference frame or in the rotor frame) and advanced control theories like direct control and predictive control are thoroughly presented. In this context, a significant place is reserved to sensorless control which is an important and critical issue in tomorrow's motors.

Les chaînes de conversion électromécanique voient leur champ d'application s'étendre à tous les domaines de l'industrie, des transports et de la production d'énergie. Les exigences des cahiers des charges, de plus en plus fortes, constituent autant de problématiques de recherche pour chacun des éléments de la chaîne, parmi eux les machines électriques. La définition même de machine non conventionnelle n'est sûrement pas unique selon que l'on considère les fonctions qu'elles doivent remplir, l'indice de sécurité qu'elles doivent atteindre, la dynamique de leur réponse ou la performance (puissance, couple) volumique et massique. Pour répondre à ces contraintes il faut envisager des machines avec des topologies originales, avec des matériaux'nouveaux', comme les supraconducteurs, ou à caractéristiques améliorées, comme les aimants permanents ou les matériaux ferromagnétiques. Les études de ces machines reposent sur des dimensionnements souvent complexes qui font appel à plusieurs disciplines et profitent largement de l'évolution des méthodes et outils de calcul. Written by specialists of modeling in electromagnetism, this book provides a comprehensive review of the finite element method for low frequency applications. Fundamentals of the method as well as new advances in the field are described in detail. Chapters 1 to 4 present general 2D and 3D static and dynamic formulations by the use of scalar and vector unknowns and adapted interpolations for the fields (nodal, edge, face or volume). Chapter 5 is dedicated to the presentation of different macroscopic behavior laws of materials and their implementation in a finite element context: anisotropy and hysteretic properties for magnetic sheets, iron losses, non-linear permanent magnets and superconductors. More specific formulations are then proposed: the modeling of thin regions when finite elements become misfit (Chapter 6), infinite domains by using geometrical transformations (Chapter 7), the coupling of 2D and 3D formulations with circuit equations (Chapter 8), taking into account the movement, particularly in the presence of Eddy currents (Chapter 9) and an original approach for the treatment of geometrical symmetries when the sources are not symmetric (Chapter 10). Chapters 11 to 13 are devoted to coupled problems: magneto-thermal coupling for induction heating, magneto-mechanical coupling by introducing the notion of strong and weak coupling and magneto-hydrodynamical coupling focusing on electromagnetic instabilities in fluid conductors. Chapter 14 presents different meshing methods in the context of electromagnetism (presence of air) and introduces self-adaptive mesh refinement procedures. Optimization techniques are then covered in Chapter 15, with the adaptation of deterministic and probabilistic methods to the numerical finite element environment. Dans le cadre du traité EGEM, une série de trois ouvrages est consacrée à la modélisation des phénomènes électromagnétiques par la méthode des éléments finis. Sans être exhaustive, elle propose une large revue sur la modélisation par éléments finis des phénomènes électromagnétiques en basse fréquence. A travers les contributions d'un grand nombre de spécialistes du domaine, les livres abordent de façon détaillée et très actuelle un ensemble de sujets traitant aussi bien les fondements de la méthode des éléments finis que les dernières avancées de modélisation des phénomènes physiques. Le présent ouvrage présente d'une part des modèles et formulations destinés à la prise en compte de problèmes couplés, des régions minces et du mouvement et, d'autre part, à l'élaboration de techniques de CAO. En premier lieu on y traite du couplage des équations de champs électromagnétiques avec les équations de circuits électriques extérieurs au domaine d'étude. Puis on s'intéresse à la prise en compte du mouvement dans la modélisation des phénomènes magnétiques. Seront abordés par la suite les problèmes couplés magnétothermiques, magnétomécaniques et magnétohydrauliques. Une analyse des problèmes de maillage dans le cadre de l'application de la méthode des éléments finis au calcul des champs électromagnétiques est également proposée, ayant comme objectif de faire ressortir les techniques modernes de maillage en tenant compte des spécificités liées à l'électromagnétisme. Switched reluctance motors have steadily increased in commercial importance since their introduction in the early 1980's, while their technology - especially of their electronic control - has made great progress.
