Nonlinear Optics on Ferroic Materials Covering the fruitful combination of nonlinear optics and ferroic materials! The use of nonlinear optics for the study of ferroics, that is, magnetically, electrically or otherwise spontaneously ordered and switchable materials has witnessed a remarkable development since its inception with the invention of the laser in the 1960s. This book on Nonlinear Optics on Ferroic Materials reviews and advances an overarching concept of ferroic order and its exploration by nonlinear-optical methods. In doing so, it brings together three fields of physics: symmetry, ferroic order, and nonlinear laser spectroscopy. It begins by introducing the fundamentals for each of these fields. The book then discusses how nonlinear optical studies help to reveal properties of ferroic materials that are often inaccessible with other methods. In this, consequent use is made of the unique degrees of freedom inherent to optical experiments. An excursion into the theoretical foundations of nonlinear optical processes in ferroics rounds off the discussion. The final part of the book explores classes of ferroic materials of primary interest. In particular, this covers multiferroics with magnetoelectric correlations and oxide-electronic heterostructures. An outlook towards materials exhibiting novel forms of ferroic states or correlated arrangements beyond ferroic order and the study these systems by nonlinear optics concludes the work. The book is aimed equally at experienced scientists and young researchers at the interface between condensed-matter physics and optics and with a taste for bold, innovative ideas.

This monograph provides researchers, engineers, postgraduates and lecturers working in the field of ferroelectric or piezoelectric and related materials with features of the structure-property relationships in modern piezo-active composites. These are piezoelectric composites which are active dielectric materials, which can be poled ferroelectric ceramics or domain-engineered single crystals poled along specific crystallographic directions. Current knowledge of the effective physical properties of these materials is lacking especially due to gaps of information in physical, chemical, microgeometric and technological factors. For composite and transducer design purposes, the expected properties of these piezo-active materials have been theorized through models by the authors and proven in experiments. In dieser interdisziplinären Arbeit werden die dielektrischen Eigenschaften von kontinuierlich steuerbaren ferroelektrischen Materialien hinsichtlich ihrer Eigenschaften im Hochleistungsbetrieb untersucht. Die dabei durchgeführten Untersuchungen reichen von der Materialebene, über die Modellierung der Komponenten bis hin zur Synthese von steuerbaren Hochfrequenzschaltungen. Ein CAD-Ansatz zur Modellierung steuerbarer Kompositkeramiken wird vorgestellt. In dem vorgeschlagenen Modell werden zusätzliche Freiheitsgrade eingeführt, wodurch eine, im Vergleich zu bereits etablierten Methoden, akkuratere Beschreibung von zweiphasigen Kompositmaterialien gezeigt wird. Erste systematische Untersuchungen von steuerbaren, auf Ferroelektrika basierten, Parallelplatenkondensatoren und uniplanaren Interdigitalkondensatoren IDCs für Hochleistungsanwendungen werden dargelegt. Design-Leitfäden werden für den Entwurf im Hochleistungsbetrieb aufgezeigt. Die untersuchten Komponenten werden als Teil eines kompakten, steuerbaren Anpassnetzwerks zusammen mit einem GaN HEM Transistor implementiert. Der somit steuerbare Verstärker wird hinsichtlich seiner Eigenschaften eingehend charakterisiert.

The investigation of nanosized ferroelectric films and ferroelectric nanocrystals has attracted much attention during the past 15 – 20 years. There is interest in the fundamental and applied aspects. The theoretical basis is connected with the development of the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) mean field and the first principles theories to the ultrathin ferroelectric films with thickness in the vicinity of critical size. Important potential applications are possible nanosize ferroelectric films in non-volatile memories, microelectronics, sensors, pyroelectric and electro-optic devices. This new area of research of ferroelectricity is still in impetuous development and far from completion. Many topics elucidated need generalization. The book contains theory and experimental data for a wide range of ferroelectric materials.

This book brings together numerous contributions to the field of magnetoelectric (ME) composites that have been reported so far. Theoretical models of ME coupling in composites relate to the wide frequency range: from low-frequency to microwave ones and are based on simultaneous solving the elastostatic/elastodynamic and electrodynamics equations. Suggested models enable one to optimize magnetoelectric parameters of a composite. This book mainly focuses on the investigation of the electric-field control of magnetism and spin-dependent transportation based on a Co40Fe40B20(CoFeB)/Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.7Ti0.3O3(PMN-PT) multiferroic heterostructure. Methods of characterization and analysis of the multiferroic properties with in situ electric fields are induced to detect the direct magnetoelectric (ME) coupling. A switchable and non-volatile electric field control of magnetization in CoFeB/PMN-PT(001) structures is observed at room temperature, and the mechanism of direct coupling between the ferroelectric domain and ferromagnetic film due to the combined action of 109° ferroelastic domain switching in PMN-PT and the absence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy in CoFeB is demonstrated. Moreover, the electric-field control of giant magnetoresistance is achieved in a CoFeB-based spin valve deposited on top of (011) oriented PMN-PT, which offers an avenue for implementing electric-writing and magnetic-reading random access memory at room temperature. Readers will learn the basic properties of multiferroic materials, many useful techniques related to characterizing multiferroics and the interesting ME effect in CoFeB/PMN-PT structures, which is significant for applications.

The electromechanical behavior of two new sodium bismuth titanate based lead-free ferroelectric materials as well as bilayer composites are investigated in experiments and numerical simulations. For the Finite-Element-Method, a fully coupled, three dimensional ferroelectric constitutive model is developed. In a parameter study, the electromechanical coupling of bilayer composite is optimized.

Synthetic polymer films are most widely used as materials for the production of stable charged films. One of the simplest and most widespread methods for charging the polymers involves the use of corona discharge in air at room temperature. The corona discharge creates high energy oxygen-containing charged particles, which are accelerated by the electric field of the corona and then interact with the surface of the polymer films. This book is a review of three aspects of synthetic polymer films changes initiated by corona charging, as well as their possible applications.

The authors present the first monograph on electronic properties, lattice dynamics and phase transitions in TlX and TlMX2 (M = Ga, In; X = Se, S, Te) compounds. These chalcogenides belong to a family of the low-dimensional А3В6 and A3B3C62 semiconductors possessing chain or layered structure. They are of significant interest because of highly anisotropic properties, semiconductor and photoconductor behavior, non-linear effects in their current-voltage characteristics (including a region of negative differential resistance), switching and memory effects, second harmonic optical generation, ferroelectricity, relaxor behavior and potential applications in optoelectronic devices. We review (i) crystal structure of the compounds, (ii) their transport properties under ambient conditions, (iii) experimental studies of the electronic structure, (iv) band structure calculations, (v) transport properties, semiconductor-metal phase transitions and band structure under high pressure, (vi) ferroelectric/structural phase transitions at ambient pressure, soft modes and incommensurate states, (vii) electronic nature of the ferroelectric phase transitions, (viii) lattice dynamics in А3В6 and A3B3C62 crystals and their solid solutions, (ix) elastic properties and (x) recently discovered relaxor behavior, nanodomains and quantum dots in doped and irradiated crystals. Physical properties of some related low-dimensional compounds are also discussed. New perspectives in studying and application of the aforementioned semiconductors are considered.
