- Abstract
An unfiltered and outrageously funny commentary on the threats to free speech in America from the legendary comedian, actor, and Emmy-nominated SNL writer. Rob Schneider's childhood in the San Francisco Bay area with parents of mixed-race backgrounds shaped his view of the world: that America affords the greatest opportunity for peoples from all nations and all faiths. But today, in this world gone mad, free speech is under attack. And Schneider keeps finding himself in controversy for questioning what woke ideology is doing to our great nation. Still, he refuses to be censored. In his debut book, Schneider will make you laugh out loud as he tells his unique story of a Hollywood-comedian-turned-vocal-advocate for open dialogue. He takes readers along for a ride through his life in show business (where he's starred in 27 movies with his friend Adam Sandler), shares stories from the glory days of Saturday Night Live, and makes a persuasive case for fearlessness in speech and pushing the boundaries in comedy. Comedians matter because they have a unique position in society to stand up against tyranny. In this book, Schneider shares never-before-told personal stories about Chris Farley, Norm Macdonald, Christopher Walken, Dana Carvey, and Martin Landau, and other comedy legends. You Can Do It! is part celeb memoir, part warning, and part siren call to action. It was said during the days of Covid the difference between a conspiracy theory and the truth was about six months. Influenced by his own experiences in Hollywood, Schneider illustrates his points about free expression with provocative commentary on things you aren't suppose to question, like identity politics, Covid tyranny,'global boiling,'medical freedoms and more. Schneider refuses to believe he's dangerous for saying what he thinks. In fact, the opposite is true—it's dangerous to not question the narrative. It's dangerous to not exercise your free speech. That's what Rob Schneider's doing. And as this humorous, shocking, irreverent but insightful book shows readers, you can do it too.

- Abstract

- Abstract
This “smart and fun read, and a valuable way to revitalize your life” (Walter Isaacson) deftly explains how disrupting our well-worn routines, both good and bad, can rejuvenate and reset our brains for the better.Have you ever noticed that what is exciting on Monday tends to become boring on Friday? Even passionate relationships, stimulating jobs, and breathtaking works of art lose their sparkle after a while. As easy as it is to stop noticing what is most wonderful in our lives, it's also possible to stop noticing what is terrible. People get used to dirty air. They become unconcerned by their own misconduct, blind to inequality, and are more liable to believe misinformation than ever before. Now, neuroscience professor Tali Sharot and Harvard law professor (and presidential advisor) Cass R. Sunstein investigate why we stop noticing both the great and not-so-great things around us and how to “dishabituate” at the office, in the bedroom, at the store, on social media, and in the voting booth. This groundbreaking and “sensational guide to a more psychological rich life” (Angela Duckworth, New York Times bestselling author), based on decades of research, illuminates how we can reignite the sparks of joy, innovate, and recognize where improvements urgently need to be made. The key to this disruption—to seeing, feeling, and noticing again—is change. By temporarily changing your environment, changing the rules, changing the people you interact with—or even just stepping back and imagining change—you regain sensitivity, allowing you to identify more clearly the bad and more deeply appreciate the good.

- Abstract
This “captivating illustration of the follies of trying to model and forecast the unpredictable world” (Financial Times) is both “empowering” (The New Statesman, UK) and “compelling” (New Scientist) as it challenges our most fundamental assumptions—by social scientist and Atlantic writer Brian Klaas. If you could rewind your life to the very beginning and then press play, would everything turn out the same? Or could making an accidental phone call or missing an exit off the highway change not just your life, but history itself? In Fluke, myth-shattering social scientist Brian Klaas takes a deep-dive into the phenomenon of random chance and the chaos it can sow, taking aim at most people's neat and tidy version of reality. The book's argument is that we willfully ignore a bewildering truth: but for a few small changes, our lives—and our societies—could be radically different. Offering an entirely new lens, Fluke explores how our world really works, driven by strange interactions and apparently random events. How did one couple's vacation cause 100,000 people to die? Does our decision to hit the snooze button in the morning radically alter the trajectory of our lives? And has the evolution of humans been inevitable, or are we simply the product of a series of freak accidents? Drawing on social science, chaos theory, history, evolutionary biology, and philosophy, Klaas provides a brilliantly fresh look at why things happen—all while providing mind-bending lessons on how we can live smarter, be happier, and lead more fulfilling lives.

- Abstract
World-renowned happiness expert Bruce Hood presents seven simple, but life-changing lessons that Booklist calls'a fresh mix of accessible science, common sense, and examples from a variety of countries'to help readers reconnect with the things that truly matter. Over seven lessons, grounded in decades of studies in neuroscience and developmental psychology, The Science of Happiness tells a radical new story about the roots of well-being, with practical takeaways that show how we can all re-wire our thinking and transform our lives. The problem with achieving happiness is the way the human mind is designed by evolution to process the world from an egocentric perspective and focus on the threats that might shorten our lives. Socially dependent on others, egocentric children grow into adults who may be less self-centred but end up becoming dissatisfied because we are prone to focus on the wrong information and comparisons when it comes to evaluating our lives. We need to get out of our heads by connecting with others and the world around us through practices that have proven to make us happier.

USA Today BestsellerPublishers Weekly BestsellerPublisher Marketplace BestsellerAt the age of 16, he escaped persecution and made his way to America as a refugee. At 28, he secured a billion-dollar IPO. Today, he's redefining what it means to be an entrepreneur by building a new model of capitalism. In the summer of 1987, Payam Zamani fled Iran. As a member of the Baha'i Faith, he had already survived years of religious persecution at the hands of Islamic fundamentalists. Taking the only path available to him, he escaped to Pakistan through the Emptiness Desert: a harrowing five-day trek through one of the hottest, driest, and most hostile regions on the planet.Twelve years later, he and his brother set records when the company they founded hit a $1.2 billion valuation on Wall Street. He was rich—on paper. But in the wake of yet another Wall Street meltdown, he learned the hard way that modern capitalism can be harmful to the human soul.In 2015, Payam set the example he wanted to see by merging his business acumen with his spiritual beliefs and founding a new company—One Planet Group—this time without letting Wall Street or the venture capital world dictate the terms. Today, One Planet Group is proving that it's not only possible but necessary to build strong businesses while taking care of our employees, customers, communities, and the planet.Crossing the Desert gives readers an intimate look at how the paths we choose, the values we embrace, and the systems we decide to participate in (or not) can make or break us, not only financially, but spiritually. Payam's story is a timely reminder that enduring and embracing life's most difficult journeys can lead us to a brighter future—not only for ourselves, but for the people around us, and even the world.

- Abstract
'The Wisdom of Life'is one of Arthur Schopenhauer's works, originally published in 1851 as part of his collection'Parerga and Paralipomena.'In this work, Schopenhauer presents a series of aphorisms and brief reflections on achieving a wiser and more satisfying life. He discusses topics such as the pursuit of happiness, the nature of human suffering, the importance of self-understanding, and the art of living wisely in the face of life's adversities. Schopenhauer's aphorisms in'Aphorisms for the Wisdom of Life'reflect his philosophical outlook, deeply influenced by metaphysical pessimism. He argues that the world is fundamentally a place of pain and frustration but suggests that through understanding our own desires and limitations, we can find a path to resignation and contentment. This work is considered a practical and accessible exploration of his broader philosophical ideas, aimed not only at scholars but also at the general public interested in existential and ethical issues.

Manfred Kets de Vries wears many “hats”—psychoanalyst, executive coach, consultant, management educator, researcher, writer—but he has noticed that whichever hat he is wearing, every question he is asked boils down to one thing: “How can I live a well-lived life?”Over many years of practice in all these disciplines, Professor Kets de Vries has realized the unsurpassed value of stories in tackling human dilemmas and providing answers to this question. The book is, therefore, one of the most important books he has written for coaches, students, leaders, managers, educators—or anyone seeking a more reflective text to guide them through the multitude of questions that we face in work and in life. He draws on a long literary tradition of the unexpected encounter with a wise “other,” fantastic or magical—think The Little Prince, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, The Once and Future King, the Harry Potter novels—to animate an exploration of the deepest questions and concerns of human beings. He constructs an extended Socratic dialogue between his two “selves”; the first a naïve traveler, lost in the Siberian wilderness, and the second a reflective avatar who comes to his aid. The avatar takes the form of a “kabouter,” a familiar figure in Dutch folklore whose counterpart can be found in different cultures around the world and throughout centuries of storytelling.Through stories, riddles, and puzzles, the kabouter challenges the traveler to question and reflect upon his life and values, guiding him—and readers—toward the insights that will help them achieve a life well lived.

- Abstract
“Accessible and practical, Rabil's book will appeal to anyone seeking not only to understand what it takes to succeed, but also to understand the courage, discipline, and grace it takes to become a champion...Wise, inspired reading.” — KirkusFrom lacrosse legend Paul Rabil, lessons on becoming a true champion— in sports, business, and lifeLong before Paul Rabil had become lacrosses's most acclaimed player, the sport's first million-dollar man, and the cofounder of the Premier Lacrosse League, he always strove for greatness. The problem was he lacked a manual for how to achieve it— so, he set out to create one himself. He talked to Bill Belichick about how to prepare, Steph Curry about how to practice, Sue Bird about how to develop resilience, and Mark Cuban about how to build a career with longevity. From the wisdom of these and other legends, and through his own—often painful—trial and error, he forged himself into a true champion. And in doing so, he wrote the manual he always wanted. The Way of The Champion is the synthesis of everything Rabil learned on his path to becoming one of the greatest lacrosse players of all time. But this is not merely a sports book. It is a guide to embodying a champion's mindset—in sports, in business, and in relationships.According to Paul Rabil, “No one is born to be a champion. It can only be earned— through equal parts philosophy, execution, and sheer determination. I've won and lost championships, business deals, and relationships. I've learned that our best moments come after we've faced our most devestating defeats— when we choose to rise with unwavering resolve. That's the way of the champion.'

23. The Ritual Effect : From Habit to Ritual, Harness the Surprising Power of Everyday Actions
- Author
-
Michael Norton and Michael Norton
- Subjects
- Mindfulness (Psychology), Conduct of life, Habit
- Abstract
In the bestselling tradition of Charles Duhigg's The Power of Habit and Angela Duckworth's Grit, a renowned social psychologist demonstrates how a subtle turning of habits into rituals can “clear a little space for everyday magic” (The Guardian) in our lives. Our lives are filled with repetitive tasks meant to keep us on track—what we come to know as habits. Over time, these routines (like brushing your teeth or putting on your right sock first) tend to be performed automatically. But when we're more mindful about these actions—when we focus on the precise way they are performed—they can instead become rituals. Shifting from a “habitual” mindset to a “ritual” mindset can convert ordinary acts from black and white to technicolor. Think about the way you savor a certain beverage, the care you take with a particular outfit that gets worn only on special occasions, the unique way that your family gathers around the table during holidays, or the secret language you enjoy with your significant other. To some, these behaviors may seem quirky, but because rituals matter so deeply to us on a personal level, they give our lives purpose and meaning. Drawing on a decade of original research, Norton shows that rituals play a role in healing communities experiencing a great loss, marking life's major transitions, driving a stadium of sports fans to ecstasy, and helping us rise to challenges and realize opportunities. Compelling, insightful, and practical, The Ritual Effect reminds us of the intention-filled acts that drive human behavior and create surprising satisfaction and enjoyment.

- Author
-
Ronald de Sousa and Ronald de Sousa
- Subjects
- Self (Philosophy), Self-righteousness, Conduct of life, Ethics
- Abstract
Why It's OK to Be Amoral argues that self-righteous moralism has replaced religion as a source of embattled and gratuitous certainties. High-minded moral convictions invoke the authority of sacred moral truths, but there are no such truths. In reality, moral passions are rooted in atavistic emotional dispositions and arbitrary social conventions. While public and private discourse is saturated with guilt, shame and righteous indignation, professional philosophers, under cover of clever argumentation, promote the utopian idea that all practical questions have uniquely right answers—providing that you adopt the right moral principles. But their justifications for those principles appeal to contested ‘foundations', among which no rational adjudication is possible. Moreover, because there are two discrepant ways of understanding motivation, our access to agents'true reasons is never sufficiently reliable to warrant moral praise or blame. Finally, every agent has a wide diversity of reasons for action, yet moralists claim that some reasons trump all others, because they are ‘moral'reasons. Since these too must be grounded in facts, that amounts to double counting some reasons.Having exposed these aspects of the institution of morality, this book suggests that if we cannot abstain altogether from moralising, we can at least try to use it against itself.Key Features Describes and criticises seven approaches to the question, Why should I do or not do X? Develops an original objection to the idea of identifying a domain of moral reasons: namely, that it amounts to the unwarranted double counting of a subset of our reasons. Describes two ways of thinking about reasons and choices, and explains how the discrepancy between them makes it impossible to assess an agent's motivation reliably enough to warrant moral praise or blame. Outlines the subtle changes in attitude involved in espousing amoralism, without giving up on rational choices and honest political commitments.

- Abstract
Can running make me a more moral person? Can striving to be a better person make me a better runner? In The Examined Run, philosopher and ultramarathon runner Sabrina B. Little asks whether running can be a laboratory for developing our character. She looks at the key ideas in virtue ethics--virtue, vice, exemplarism, moral emotions, and competition--and brings them into conversation with her experience in training and racing. Little pushes against the frequent conversations about ethics and sport that focus on the negative--doping and other forms of cheating or on simplistic expressions like “no pain, no gain.” She argues that these ideas don't address the rich picture of how athletics inform a good life, and sport's relationship to acts of justice or courage. A good athlete is not just one who avoids cheating--rather, they perform feats of perseverance and courage, and succeed by working to develop their natural capacities. Little employs her own experiences in training, coaching, and racing in world class ultramarathons to reveal how athletics and virtue are deeply interconnected.

Quarterback John Unitas was all that America wanted in a man in the late 1950s into the 1960s. He was hardworking, humble, respectful, and true to his word. As a football player, Unitas became known for his trademark crew cut and black high-top cleats... which he would later wear when cutting grass because “they were comfortable and still fit.” Blessed with athleticism and a goldenarm, he had a heart that pumped ice water through his veins, allowing him to remain unemotional in the tensest moments of football games. In fact, he is credited with inventing—and perfecting—the two-minute drill; but statistics and accolades weren't important to him—only winning.Joe Unitas was fortunate enough to have had twenty-eight great years with his dad and he knows the essence of the man. His father's ambition, determination, and courage never wavered. The examples he set and the lessons he taught are a father's legacy to his son as Joe's biggest supporter and most incredible source of inspiration. His passion and motivation to be the best served as the foundations upon which many of Joe's successes have been built.Unitas to Unitas offers a deeply personal reflection on John Unitas's legacy and its profound effect within every aspect of his son's life. His life lessons allowed the author to make his own dreams come true. This collection of twenty lessons informed the author's life, and in this book he shares them as inspirational wisdom from one of football's greatest leaders.

“To know thyself is the beginning of wisdom.”—Socrates What's the secret to lasting happiness? How do you gain the resilience needed to weather life's inevitable storms? What can you do when you're feeling anxious, depressed, stressed, or burned out by life? For ancient philosophers like Socrates, Marcus Aurelius, Zeno, and Epictetus, these questions were more than mere musings—they were key elements of a school of thought called Stoicism. In The Stoicism Workbook, you'll learn how thinking like Socrates—and using the Socratic method of questioning or self-inquiry—can help you identify what truly matters in your life, and build the resilience needed to go out and get it! Combining ancient philosophical wisdom with modern psychology, this practical self-help workbook will help you think flexibly, maintain inner peace, adapt to difficult situations, and improve your overall mental health and well-being. You'll also discover how the core Stoic virtues—wisdom, justice, courage, and temperance—can be your compass as you navigate an increasingly uncertain world. - Abstract
Drawing on the author's own experiences as a psychiatrist-psychotherapist, this fascinating new book gathers and analyzes folktales from around the world about adults struggling with conflicts and trying to determine truth. These narratives illustrate how storytelling is crucial to the process of reconciliation. The stories included within this book feature both familiar and forgotten ones: e.g.,'The Fisherman and the Djinn'from Arabia;'Why the Platypus Is Special'from Australia; the Native American,'How Nanapush Brought the Peace Pipe to the People,'and the ancient Greek tale of'Baucis and Philemon'. The anthology retells the tales and discusses them in terms of psychological and spiritual development - the role of individuation and wisdom in reconciling disputes. The tales reveal astonishing cross-cultural similarities about how to do so, and directly apply to many modern dilemmas. Particularly important is a new paradigm of truth and transformation illustrated by long overlooked tales of the Greek Muses. The Muses of Truth and Transformation draws on Chinen's research in adult cognitive, emotional, and spiritual development. The new perspective will appeal to Jungian analysts, psychotherapists, as well as students of psychology, mythology, and epistemology.

- Abstract
In Living Chinese Philosophy, Roger T. Ames uses comparative cultural hermeneutics as a method for contrasting classical Greek ontology ('the science of being in itself') with classical Chinese'zoetology'('the art of living'), which is made explicit in the Yijing 易經 or Book of Changes. Parmenides, Plato, and Aristotle give us a substance ontology grounded in'being qua being'or'being per se'(to on he on) that guarantees a permanent and unchanging subject as the substratum for the human experience. This substratum or essence includes its purpose for being (telos) and defines the'what-it-means-to-be-a-thing-of-this-kind'(eidos) of any particular thing, thus setting a closed, exclusive boundary and the strict identity necessary for a particular thing to be'this'and not'that.'In the Book of Changes, we find a vocabulary that makes explicit cosmological assumptions that are a stark alternative to this substance ontology. It also provides the interpretive context for the canonical texts by locating them within a holistic, organic, and ecological worldview. To provide a meaningful contrast with this fundamental assumption of on or'being,'we might borrow the Greek notion of zoe or'life'and create the neologism'zoe-tology'as'the art of living'(shengshenglun 生生論). This cosmology begins from'living'(sheng 生) itself as the motive force behind change and gives us a world of boundless'becomings': not'things'that are but'events'that are happening, a contrast between an ontological conception of human'beings'and a process conception of what the author calls human'becomings.'

I am a Black man in America... and I am privileged. While growing up, author Brian Thomas might not have considered himself privileged. The biracial son of a Black father and a white mother, he watched his parents struggle against racism and bigotry, and witnessed the strain this sometimes placed on their relationship. Yet he also saw them fight their way into the middle-class, which allowed them to buy a nice home in a school district that provided Brian and his sister with a solid education. He now realizes that their sacrifices and determination to provide a better life for their children were what put him in a position of privilege. In spite of the benefits his upbringing afforded him, Brian had to overcome immense hurdles, including two kidney transplants. And his experiences have shown him that regardless of circumstances, success is within everyone's reach. The Privilege Race explores what it means to be privileged in America and provides a roadmap for you to build a bridge between the life you're currently living and the one you want to live: Learn about your mental conditioning, to better understand the source of your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Determine what you genuinely want from life—not what you've been told you should want. 46. Everything Is Useful : Turning Obstacles Into Opportunities on the Road to Enlightenment
- Author
-
Garth J. Hallett and Garth J. Hallett
- Subjects
- Spirituality, Conduct of life, Philosophy
- Abstract
A spiritual quest typically begins with a critical shock or loss, one that casts us back upon ourselves to question the meaning of life. Should our suffering affect us deeply enough, it will plummet us into our hearts, where the hidden treasures of life are to be found. Should we happen to fully let go, we will let go into what IS; and thus, adversity and pain fulfill their natural roles. From that point onward, our emphasis and priorities change. But discovering our truth and living by it are entirely different things. Obstacles frequently beset our path, some without, the greater part within. Everything is Useful identifies such obstacles. It offers strategies for overcoming them by seeing them as what they are, cosmic strength-building exercises that empower us to learn, to grow, and, ultimately, to transcend; for like the pain that sparked our quest, the obstacles in our way, double as a means to enlightenment.

48. The Life Worth Living in Ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy
- Author
-
David Machek and David Machek
- Subjects
- Ethics, Ancient, Philosophy, Ancient, Wisdom, Conduct of life
- Abstract
The account of the best life for humans – i.e. a happy or flourishing life – and what it might consist of was the central theme of ancient ethics. But what does it take to have a life that, if not happy, is at least worth living, compared with being dead or never having come into life? This question was also much discussed in antiquity, and David Machek's book reconstructs, for the first time, philosophical engagements with the question from Socrates to Plotinus. Machek's comprehensive book explores ancient views on a life worth living against a background of the pessimistic outlook on the human condition which was adopted by the Greek poets, and also shows the continuities and contrasts between the ancient perspective and modern philosophical debates about biomedical ethics and the ethics of procreation. His rich study of this relatively neglected theme offers a fresh and compelling narrative of ancient ethics.

- Subjects
- Conduct of life, Socialization
- Abstract
A wry, cinematic tour through multiple forms: the poem, the vignette, the play—all set in our laughably lamentable contemporary world. In three poems, one play, and three short stories, Stéphane Bouquet's Common Life offers a lively, searching vision of contemporary life, politics, and sociality. At a moment at which the fabric of everyday social life is increasingly threatened across the globe, this book is a necessary exercise of the literary imagination: what, it asks, does it mean to inhabit the world together today? With humor and sincerity, Common Life imagines the utopias of collectivity, friendship and love that might enable hope for the present and the future.

Where are you looking for joy, contentment, and purpose? Stevie and Sazan know what it's like to search for the good life and, having achieved'success'at a young age, they know firsthand that the success we think we want isn't what truly satisfies.Even as their careers and social media popularity grew, Stevie and Sazan were still searching for the good life, just like everyone else.
