12. The Tragedy of Richard II, Part One : A Newly Authenticated Play
- Author
-
Egan, Michael, Shakespeare, William, Egan, Michael, and Shakespeare, William
- Abstract
This is a new, three-volume edition of an anonymous Elizabethan history play that has intrigued Shakespeare scholars for more than a century. Using modern computer softwares to degrain and magnify the text, Michael Egan resolves many of the transcription difficulties presented by the handwritten MS to produce the most authoritative edition yet available. A set of Text and Variorum Notes meticulously records the variant readings of previous editors and provides relevant citations from contemporary sources and other analytic comments to clarify the play's meanings, concerns and thematic preoccupations. Among other features of this edition are an original conclusion in the Elizabethan manner (some lines of the MS's final scene are missing), a book-length Introduction proving that Shakespeare wrote the play, and a l00-page supplement detailing over 1,600 echoes and parallels with the Collected Works. Other sections examine 1 Richard II's textual history from 1870–present, outline its historical background and include selections from the writings of those critics who have discussed the work in detail. This work is a must for every Shakespearean collection.

- Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) applications in architectural design have achieved a critical mass and exploded into the mainstream of architectural imaginations. From practical applications in design and constructionto the implications for architectural theory to a plethora of novel tools for accelerated morphological studies, what has become clear is that the discipline is passing a threshold that fundamentally changes architecture as a whole. However, the most radical change is the interrogation and novel discussion of authorship and agency in design ecologies driven by synthetic imaginations. What does it mean for authorship when more than 50 per cent of the content is generated by a nonhuman player? This issue seems more pressing than ever. In a world that is being transformed by AI on a daily basis, what is the role of the sole genius, and designers, artists and architects? This AD dives deep into current discussions about the human position in architectural design, which is increasingly entangled in an AI-driven design context. - Abstract
Regarded by many as a dead or simply dull subject, Change and Challenge in Human Structure — Sixty Years On shatters this prejudice with a series of studies that go beyond dissection and measurement and covers novel approaches to anatomical form. Award-winning anatomist Charles Oxnard takes us on an exhilarating ride: beginning with rudimentary dissections and the fascinating observation of'missing muscles', we are led on naturally to statistical analysis of bone measurements and how they may give information about bone function. Engineering methods and pattern recognition are introduced next, as a means of studying the external shape and internal structure of bones, respectively, and their relation to mechanical function. The application of landmark analysis to anatomy, also known as geometric morphometrics, is given a full chapter treatment. Finally, Oxnard uses modelling techniques to skilfully lay out an argument for the uniqueness of human brains and new possibilities in human evolutionary theories, both past and future. This book offers nothing less than a paradigm shift in our understanding of one of the oldest fields of science, and leads us into new views of the functional, developmental, behavioural, genetic and evolutionary implications of anatomical studies.

- Abstract
Sugarcane is long duration crop and, passing through unexpected climate changes of all the seasons which eventually have made our tropical sugarcane environment pre-disposed to abiotic stresses that affect sugarcane cane yield abysmally. Farmers cultivating sugarcane are facing multiple problems. Water is one of the major constraints and it is affecting the productivity and profitability of sugarcane growers and millers. So, unless sugarcane farmers are provided with options of high yields with much less water, India will find it difficult to meet its growing demand for sugar. Similarly flooding reduces shoot and root growth, dry matter production and total crop yield and cane yield losses depend upon the duration of waterlogging, stage of crop growth and management practices before, during and after waterlogging. In tropical climates, excess of radiation and high temperatures are often the most limiting factors affecting plant growth and final crop yield. In crop improvement perspective, effective identification of stress resistance traits, characterization of their genetic complexity and identification of genes in a wide array of both wild and cultivated genotypes are the important steps in breeding process. Though both the sugarcane and cotton crops show higher tolerance to abiotic stresses than the other major agricultural crops, however, extreme environmental conditions, such as drought and high temperature have an adverse effect on growth, productivity of both the crops, juice quality of sugarcane and fiber quality of cotton respectively. When a plant is subjected to abiotic stress, variety of genes are turned on, leading to increased levels of several proteins and metabolites, a number of which can be responsible for conferring a particular degree of protection to those stresses. This chapter gives an insight to sugarcane and cotton plants'responses to various abiotic stresses, as well as the physiological and molecularinterventions for developing climate-smart commercial varieties, and agronomical interventions for sustaining the crop yield under changing climate.
