25. The Tribal Mind and the Psychology of Collectivism
- Author
-
Joseph P. Forgas and Joseph P. Forgas
- Subjects
- Tribes--Psychological aspects, Group identity, Authority
- Abstract
Tribalism is a key evolutionary feature of humans, and the recent growth in tribal polarisation presents a serious challenge to our highly individualistic civilisation. This fascinating book examines the psychological origins and consequences of tribalism both in our private and in our public lives. The chapters explore how social, evolutionary, biological, and cognitive factors shape our tribal habits, featuring contributions from eminent international researchers. The chapters review the nature and origins of tribalism, the psychological mechanisms promoting tribalism, how tribal narratives can distort rationality and perceptions of reality, and the role of tribalism in politics and public affairs. The contributions investigate how insecurity, the search for meaning and attachment, victimhood, grievance, and cognitive shortcomings can facilitate tribal bonding and how such groups once formed can foster conflict, hatred, and irrational behaviours. The book suggests that the survival of our extremely successful civilisation based on the enlightenment values of liberty and individualism may well depend on our ability to understand and manage the human evolutionary propensity for tribalism. The book will be of great interest to students and researchers in psychology, sociology, and other disciplines of behavioural and social sciences, as well as all readers who seek to understand one of the most intriguing issues that shape human social life.

- Subjects
- Geospatial data--Health aspects, Medical geography--Data processing, Medical informatics--Geographic information systems
- Abstract
Geographic information, spatial analysis and geospatial technologies play an important role in understanding changes in planetary health and in defining the drivers contributing to different health outcomes both locally and globally. Patterns influencing health outcomes and disease in the environment are complex and require an understanding of the ecology of the disease and how these interact in space and time. Knowing where and when diseases are prevalent, who is affected and what may be driving these outcomes is important for determining how to respond. In reality, we all would like to be healthy and live in healthy places. In this book, epidemiology and public health are integrated with spatial data science to examine health issues in dynamically changing environments. This is too broad a field to be completely covered in one book, and so, it has been necessary to be selective with the topics, methods and examples used to avoid overwhelming introductory readers while at the same time providing sufficient depth for geospatial experts interested in health and for health professionals interested in integrating geospatial elements for health analysis. A variety of geographic information (some novel, some volunteered, some authoritative, some big and messy) is used with a mix of methods consisting of spatial analysis, data science and spatial statistics to better understand health risks and disease outcomes.Key Features: Makes spatial data science accessible to health Integrates epidemiology and disease ecology with spatial data science Integrates theoretical geographic information science concepts Provides practical and applied approaches for examining and exploring health and disease risks Provides spatial data science skill development ranging from map making to spatial modelling

- Abstract
The book Cultivating Future-Oriented Learners: Polyphonic Education in a Changing World offers a new theoretical and practical educational approach, responding to our era's challenges. The polyphonic paradigm it proposes uses current educational elements to produce'a new whole'connecting technology, varied learning spaces, humanizing pedagogy, and global values of personal, social, and environmental responsibility. Combining all these elements, the presented polyphonic wisdom model enables teachers to design a technology-enhanced, pluralistic, and dynamic learning environment where individual voices are heard while all the voices harmonize. Centered around human dignity and affinity between the personal and collective good, it aspires to assist educators in cultivating productive and value-based future citizens and teachers within a democratic society. The book introduces thirteen unique teaching models to foster humanizing global values: diversity and inclusion, ecohumanistic responsibility, and a dialogue between diverse stands and perspectives. It guides learners toward attaining their objectives by acquiring independent learning skills. Together, these teaching models are a catalogue of practical implementation choices of the polyphonic wisdom model in various educational frameworks. The envisaged readership encompasses educators and related professionals, but no less so anyone concerned about the current educational crisis who wishes to rethink education, technology, and values such as present and future personal, social, and environmental responsibility.

- Abstract
Authored by over 500 internationally acclaimed expert editors and chapter authors from around the world. Completely updated and expanded with almost 40 new chapters. Significantly increased attention to the role of culture in all aspects of evaluation and care. New sections on Digital Mental Health Services and Technologies, Treatment Issues in Specific Populations and Settings, and on Prevention, Systems of Care, and Psychosocial Aspects of Treatment address key advances. This edition is the first comprehensive reference work to cover the entire field of psychiatry in an updateable format, ensuring access to state of the art information. Earlier editions were called “the best current textbook of psychiatry” by the New England Journal of Medicine, and “the gold standard” by the American Journal of Psychiatry. Tasman's Psychiatry, 5th Edition, builds on the initial vision in prior editions of approaching psychiatric evaluation and care from an integrative bio-psycho-social-cultural perspective. It is designed to be an essential and accessible reference for readers at any level of experience. This editorial approach encompasses the importance of the first encounter between patient and clinician, followed by the complex task of beginning to develop a therapeutic relationship and to develop and implement a treatment plan in collaboration with the patient. The importance of increasing attention to the role of culture and social determinants of mental health is reflected both in specific chapters and in components of many chapters throughout the book, especially in those pertaining to clinical evaluation, the therapeutic alliance, and treatment. The global scope of this edition is reflected throughout the book, including the section on psychiatric disorders where evaluation using both ICD 11 and DSM 5-TR is discussed. Most chapters are authored by experts from at least two different countries or continents, adding a critically important dimension which often is missing in major psychiatric textbooks. Tasman's Psychiatry, 5th Edition, is an essential reference for all medical professionals and students who need a trusted reference or learning tool for psychiatry, psychology, clinical research, social work, counseling, therapy, and all others.

- Abstract

- Abstract
What happened to the loggers of America's past when lumbermen moved west and south in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries? How did these communities continue to create value and meaning in these marginal lands? Cutover Capitalism: The Industrialization of the Northern Forest provides a new perspective on the process of industrialization in America through the study of rural workers in a cutover landscape. Back when resources started running scarce, the environment of the forest and bodies of workers became the natural resources from which mills and landowners extracted. Bodies and cutover landscapes were mobilized in new ways to increase the scale and efficiency of production—a brutal process for workers, human and animal alike. In the Northern Forest, an industrial working class formed in relation to the unique ways that workers'bodies were used to produce value and in relation to the seasonal cycles of the forest environment. Cutover Capitalism is an innovative historical study that combines methodological approaches from labor history, environmental history, and the new history of capitalism. The book tells a character-driven yet theoretically sophisticated story about what it was like to live through this process of industrialization.

36. Sixties British Pop, Outside In : Volume 2: Itchycoo Park, 1964-1970
- Author
-
Gordon Ross Thompson and Gordon Ross Thompson
- Abstract
Itchycoo Park, 1964-1970--the second volume of Sixties British Pop, Outside In--explores how London songwriters, musicians, and production crews navigated the era's cultural upheavals by reimagining the pop-music envelope. As the generation born during the postwar years approached adulthood, they gravitated to music that resonated with their lives. Mainstream pop remained true to the basics, but some British artists conjured up sophisticated hybrid forms by recombining elements of jazz, folk, blues, Indian ragas, and western classical music while others returned to the raw essentials. Encouraging these experiments, youth culture's economic power challenged the authority of their parents'generation. Improved amplification opened larger and more lucrative concert venues while the spread of studios with enhanced technologies allowed artists and production crews the means to improve performances and recordings. British charts began to reflect London's postcolonial heritage as groups such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, and the Who all listened for ideas and sounds that would distinguish their recordings. On stage, the Yardbirds, Cream, Led Zeppelin, the Nice, and others led by instrumental virtuosi developed British versions of American blues and rhythm and blues while the Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, and King Crimson painted imaginary worlds. And, although Engelbert Humperdinck and other men lamented independent women, Dusty Springfield, Sandie Shaw, and Lulu used their cultural capital to question systemic sexism. Based on extensive research, including vintage and original interviews, Itchycoo Park, 1964-1970 presents sixties British pop, not as lists of discrete people and events, but as an interwoven story. Communities of musicians, producers, music directors, engineers, songwriters, publishers, promoters, broadcasters, and journalists interacted as they provided songs, made and played recordings, organized concerts, and celebrated the optimism of youth. They brought audiences together and gave individuals identity while establishing the musical world in which we live today.

- Abstract
This textbook blends key social work competencies (engagement, assessment, treatment planning, risk assessment, intervention, termination, and evaluation) with an anti-oppressive, antiracist, trauma-informed, clinical approach. It offers information and knowledge on anti-oppressive clinical practice and teaches skills to facilitate effective antiracist service provision. Each chapter provides basic knowledge, followed by reflective questions and exercises for critical analysis, case examples for practical application, and tools for implementing these skills. Social workers need to understand clinical theory and develop practice skills with clients, families, and communities who have experienced historical trauma, systemic oppression, and multiple intersectional identities. Learning how to increase practitioner self-awareness, engage in strategic action, and improve accountability are the beginnings of an antiracist clinical practice.

- Author

- Abstract
Traditionally equine behaviour guidance has come from an understanding of the outward behaviour of the horse and modifying that behaviour. Applied Equine Psychology goes much deeper into the inner workings of the horse, drawing parallels from human psychology and looking at what is going on in the horse's brain leading to that behaviour. This understanding is then applied to addressing outward behaviour issues, so that horse and owner can work together in a more horse-centric way to resolve issues. The book's approach is innovative and challenges traditional thinking. The book is highly illustrated and combines research and the latest concepts with practical, readable advice.

- Abstract
The world is always in flux. Stability is only a product of the moment and needs to be actively accomplished. Recognising that Routine Dynamics research has been at the forefront of this movement to understand the balance between stability and change in organizations, this volume of Research in the Sociology of Organizations delves into the realm of organizational routines within a continuously evolving society. Elaborating on themes such as temporality, improvisation, process and multiplicity, power and political dynamics, and scale, the contributors provide a comprehensive exploration of routines in a world marked by constant change. The papers provide readers with a deep understanding of how routines adapt, evolve, and persist in the face of flux. Exploring the power of routines in navigating our increasingly complex world, this volume argues that routines are as much engines of change as they are of stability, and that organizations are in a position to benefit from both.

Merla-Watson, Arturo “Velaz” Muñoz, Eric Murillo, Saul Ramirez, Roxanna Ivonne Sanchez-Avila, ire'ne lara silva, Lizzeth Tecuatl Cuaxiloa, and Bianca Tonantzin Zamora Monsters and Saints: LatIndigenous Landscapes and Spectral Storytelling is a collection of stories, poetry, art, and essays divining the contemporary intersection of Latinx and Indigenous cultures from the American Southwest, Mexico, and Central and South America. To give voice to this complicated identity, this volume investigates how cultures of ghost storytelling foreground a sense of belonging and home in people from LatIndigenous landscapes. Monsters and Saints reflects intersectional and intergenerational understandings of lived experiences, bodies, and traumas as narrated through embodied hauntings. Contributions to this anthology represent a commitment to thoughtful inquiry into the ways storytelling assigns meaning through labels like monster, saint, and ghost, particularly as these unfold in the context of global migration. For many marginalized and displaced peoples, a sense of belonging is always haunted through historical exclusion from an original homespace. This exclusion further manifests as limited bodily autonomy. By locating the concept of “home” as beyond physical constructs, the volume argues that spectral stories and storytelling practices of LatIndigeneity (re)configure affective states and spaces of being, becoming, migrating, displacing, and belonging.

- Abstract
Hormones and Reproduction of Vertebrates, Volume 5: Mammals is the fifth of five second-edition volumes representing a comprehensive and integrated overview of hormones and reproduction in fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. The book includes coverage of endocrinology, neuroendocrinology, physiology, behavior, and anatomy of reptilian reproduction. It provides a broad treatment of the roles of pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, and gonadal hormones in all aspects of reproduction, as well as descriptions of major life history events. New to this edition is a concluding assessment of the effect of environmental influences on mammals. Initial chapters in this book broadly examine sex determination, reproductive neuroendocrinology, stress, and hormonal regulation as it relates to male and female reproductive structure and function. Subsequent chapters introduce the evolution of viviparity and examine pregnancy in eutherian mammals, parturition, pheromones, and behavioral neuroendocrinology. Covered taxa include rodents, bats, and primates. The book concludes with an examination of the environmental influences on hormones and reproduction of mammals, including endocrine-disrupting chemicals and climate change. Hormones and Reproduction of Vertebrates, Volume 5: Mammals is designed to provide a readable, coordinated description of reproductive basics in mammals, as well as an introduction to the latest trends in reproductive research and a presentation of our understanding of reproductive events gained over the past decade. - Abstract
Examining two centuries of university education, this book charts the development of pedagogical approaches since the year 1800 and how they have transformed higher education. While institutions for promoting advanced learning in various forms have existed in Asia, Africa, and the Arab world for centuries, the beginning of the nineteenth century saw the emergence of the modern model of a university with which we are familiar today. This book argues that, in the time since, seven broad teaching approaches were developed across the world which continue to be used today: the disputation, the lecture, the tutorial, the research seminar, workplace teaching, teaching through material making, and role-play. O'Donoghue demonstrates how each has been reconfigured and developed over time in response to the changing nature of higher education, as well as society more generally. This expansive book will be of great interest to historians of education, scholars of education more generally, and teacher practitioners interested in the pedagogical models that shape modern academia.

- Abstract
Medical rehabilitation and the management of chronic health conditions requires patients to be proactive and engaged in their health care. This need for active partnership between patients and rehabilitation professionals takes place in an evolving health care environment that calls for patient-centered care with a greater focus on patient experience and improved outcomes. Rehabilitation professionals need strategies and tools to build trusting therapeutic alliances, support goal-setting, and promote behavior change to engage patients as collaborative partners. Motivational interviewing (MI) is an evidenced-based approach shown to change behaviors and increase engagement in many patient populations. The foundational concepts and skills of MI emphasize building a collaborative relationship in which the person's autonomy is respected and their personal goals are clarified and pursued, empowering individuals towards goal attainment and independence, consistent with the ethos of rehabilitation settings. The goals of the book are to 1) provide rehabilitation professionals with the knowledge of MI; 2) describe how this approach can be applied by a range of rehabilitation professionals working with persons with a wide range of impairments and chronic health problems; and 3) deliver strategies for implementing MI training and evaluation in rehabilitation settings.

- Mountain biking--Social aspects
- Abstract
This book represents the first critical examination of the social, cultural, and political significance of mountain biking in contemporary societies.Starting from the premise that cultures of mountain biking are diverse, complex, and at times contradictory, this book offers practical and theoretical insights into a range of embodied, material, and socio-technical relationships. Featuring contributions from an interdisciplinary team of researchers, artists, and (Indigenous) community members with backgrounds in sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, community development, and coaching, chapters critically unpack the complex and contested nature of mountain biking identities, bodies, environments, and inequalities within specific settings. Via a range of international case studies from England, Scotland, America, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa, authors highlight how tensions and conflicts in the world of mountain biking initiate important conversations about climate change, colonialism, discrimination, and land-use.This is essential reading for academics and practitioners in sociology, cultural studies, sport-for-development, and human geography.
