While the typology, syntax, and morphology of Iranian languages have been widely explored, the sociolinguistic aspects remain largely understudied. The present companion addresses this essential yet overlooked area of research in two ways: (i) The book explores multilingualism within Iran and its neighbouring countries. Following the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, tsunamis engulfed the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant located on Japan's Pacific Coast, leading to the worst nuclear disaster the world has seen since the Chernobyl crisis of 1986. Prior to this disaster, Japan had the third largest commercial nuclear program in the world, surpassed only by those in the United States and France—nuclear power significantly contributed to Japan's economic prosperity, and nearly 30% of Japan's electricity was generated by reactors dotted across the archipelago, from northern Hokkaido to southern Kyushu. This long period of institutional stasis was, however, punctuated by the crisis of March 11, which became a critical juncture for Japanese nuclear policymaking. As Akihiro Ogawa argues, the primary agent for this change is what he calls'antinuclear citizens'— a conscientious Japanese public who envision a sustainable life in a nuclear-free society. Drawing on over a decade of ethnographic research conducted across Japan—including antinuclear rallies, meetings with bureaucrats, and at renewable energy production sites—Ogawa presents an historical record of ordinary people's actions as they sought to survive and navigate a new reality post-Fukushima. Ultimately, Ogawa argues that effective sustainability efforts require collaborations that are grounded in civil society and challenge hegemonic ideology, efforts that reimagine societies and landscapes—especially those dominated by industrial capitalism—to help build a productive symbiosis between industry and sustainability.

It is a feature of the twenty-first century that world languages are displacing local languages at an alarming rate, transforming social relations and complicating cultural transmission in the process. This language shift—the gradual abandonment of minority languages in favor of national or international languages—is often in response to inequalities in power, signaling a pressure to conform to the political and economic structures represented by the newly dominant languages. In its most extreme form, language shift can result in language death and thus the permanent loss of traditional knowledge and lifeways. To combat this, indigenous and scholarly communities around the world have undertaken various efforts, from archiving and lexicography to the creation of educational and cultural programs. What works in one community, however, may not work in another. Indeed, while the causes of language endangerment may be familiar, the responses to it depend on “highly specific local conditions and opportunities.” In keeping with this premise, the editors of this volume insist that to understand language endangerment, “researchers and communities must come to understand what is happening to the speakers, not just what is happening to the language.” The eleven case studies assembled here strive to fill a gap in the study of endangered languages by providing much-needed sociohistorical and ethnographic context and thus connecting specific language phenomena to larger national and international issues. Snapping and Wrapping'represents an original study in Japanese visual culture, pictorial communication, and photographic studies. Vernacular visual culture is highlighted, stressing ordinary people and everyday life to explore photographic expressions of Japanese family life. The theme of “how people looked” is described from two closely related perspectives: how people appeared in their own photographs, and how people looked at specific features of their own lives with analog camera technology. The book includes unexamined material based on a qualitative study involving personal fieldwork undertaken between 1993 and 2009. The metaphor of “wrapping culture” (Hendry) is suggested for ways of interpreting relationships of personal family photographs in conjunction with acknowledged cultural influences and values of Japanese culture. Across an introduction and six chapters, the book covers a series of research topics evoked by efforts to recover, repair, and return millions of photographs to survivors following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Memory, privacy and kinds of information control are reviewed as parts of strategies of sharing pictures, “presence” and the use of photographs for interpersonal interaction and communication. Throughout the monograph, emphasis is placed on understanding details of analog personal photography for potential comparisons to the intensely popular digitalization of photographic recordings and, in turn, facilitate making informed speculations for future photographic practice. P-glycoprotein (P-gp), encoded by the multidrug-resistance (MDR)-1 gene is one of the best studied efflux transporters that is linked to multidrug resistance in cancer chemotherapies. P-gp belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter family of proteins that utilizes energy derived from hydrolysis of ATP to efflux endogenous and exogenous xenobiotics, metabolites and toxins from the intracellular space to the outside, thereby providing a general protective role. P-gp is expressed on the apical plasma membrane of all major drug eliminating organs such as the intestine (enterocytes), liver (bile canaliculi), kidney (proximal tubules), brain (endothelia of blood-brain barrier) and in certain tumor types. In the intestine and BBB, P-gp limits entry of drugs by actively pumping drugs back into the lumen or blood, respectively. In the liver and kidney, P-gp actively effluxes drugs, endogenous substances and metabolites into bile or urine, thereby removing them from the body. Upregulation of P-gp in tumor cells is noted in several cancers and is a hallmark for drug resistance. Additionally, P-gp is also shown to play a role in neurogenesis and maintaining homeostasis in the brain. Alteration of P-gp expression is observed in neurodegenerative diseases, highlighting its importance in maintaining normal brain health. Due to its central role in defining oral pharmacokinetics, systemic clearance, tissue exposure, organ health and chemoresistance, much of the research has been focused on modulating P-gp. Chemical inhibitors, formulation-based and epigenetic approaches are applied to modulate P-gp activity with a goal to improve oral pharmacokinetics, increase tumor and brain penetration, minimize organ toxicity and potentially treat neurodegenerative diseases. Although enormous research on P-gp has been published, a book chapter exclusively and comprehensively covering diverse aspects of P-gp, including the recent developments in the field, is required. With much enthusiasm from the publisher, we have collaborated to bring together wide-ranging topics on P-gp. This book contains 12 chapters covering the structure, function, regulation, distribution and expression of P-gp, its pharmacological importance in health and disease and role in pharmacokinetics and drug-drug interactions. Also included are computational approaches to identify selective inhibitors and tactics to modulate P-gp function using chemical inhibitors (synthesized or isolated from marine sources), formulation strategies or epigenetic approaches. The last chapter describes various methods to quantify P-gp expression levels and function in in vitro, in situ and in vivo settings. Mit dieser Reform vereinfachte der Gesetzgeber die Voraussetzungen für die Erhebung von Aktionärsklagen - in den USA als derivative suit und in Japan als kabunushi daihyô soshô bezeichnet - deutlich. In der Folge stiegen diese Klagen sprunghaft an und Leitungsorgane sehen sich nun mit zahlreichen Schadensersatzklagen konfrontiert, wobei es in einigen Fällen bereits zu Verurteilungen kam. Olaf Kliesow stellt im ersten Teil seiner Arbeit die besondere Struktur der japanischen Aktiengesellschaft dar. Daran schließt sich eine Übersicht der Aktionärsrechte an, die verdeutlicht, daß geschriebenes Recht und soziale Wirklichkeit hier erheblich voneinander abweichen. Des weiteren widmet sich Olaf Kliesow der Aktienrechtsreform von 1993 und ihren Folgen. So werden zum einen die Voraussetzungen der Klageerhebung aufgezeigt, zum anderen werden die Klagen nach materiellen Rechtskriterien in verschiedene Kategorien unterteilt und auf ihre Erfolgschancen hin untersucht. Die Analyse von 102 Gerichtsverfahren dient als Grundlage für Olaf Kliesows Untersuchung. In this compilation, the authors review studies that have been carried out using c-Fos as an activity marker for spatial navigation, discussing how this tool has helped researchers to unveil the brain's functioning. Brain regional ensembles in object novelty recognition are discussed as part of recognition memory. A broad review of neuroanatomical and functional pathways underlying these processes is provided, with special emphasis on the role played by the perirhinal cortex, mediodorsal thalamic nucleus, amygdala, and prefrontal cortex, among others. The “Pro-Truth Pledge” is proposed as an intervention for the deterioration of truth in democracies around the globe, combining behavioral science research with crowdsourcing to help address this problem. The recent proteomics discoveries of degenerative protein modifications and their role in aging and age-associated processes are examined, particularly focusing on how these interventions could extend lifespan and be applied as targeted therapies for neurodegenerative diseases. The authors go on to investigate the effects of various chemicals in the developing brain to raise awareness of the possible effects and outcomes of chemical exposure. A case of auditory agnosia, a type of central deafness commonly seen in cases of bilateral temporal cerebral lesions, is discussed, and a literature review regarding this condition is provided.
