This book presents an in-depth review of El Hierro Island, the youngest and most southwesterly volcano of the Canary Islands. In October 2011, a submarine eruption started offshore El Hierro Island. The 2011–2012 El Hierro eruption has probably been the best monitored and studied submarine eruption to date and has sparked interest in the study of this young ocean island volcano. During the last decade, multidisciplinary investigations, e.g., on the geological and volcanological character of its past and latest onshore and offshore eruptions, the geophysical and geochemical signatures of its magmatic plumbing system structure and dynamics, as well as the bio-geophysical interactions and consequences of submarine eruptions in the ocean, have been conducted. This book provides an authoritative review of many of these scientific advances as well as multiple remaining unknowns for the study of El Hierro Island and its 2011–2012 submarine eruption. Such knowledge should be of great interestto specialists not only in the Canary Islands volcanism but also in similar ocean island intraplate volcanoes.

El cannabis continúa siendo la sustancia ilegal más consumida tanto en España, como en el conjunto de los países de la Unión Europea. Se estima que más de 22 millones de adultos europeos han consumido cannabis en el último año, el 1% de los adultos europeos prácticamente a diario, siendo ese porcentaje en el caso de España más del doble (2,1%) (Observatorio Europeo de las Drogas y las Toxicomanías, 2022).Según Observatorio Español de las Drogas y las Adicciones (2022), se estima que en el último año han comenzado a consumir cannabis 155.800 estudiantes de 14-18 años, siendo ligeramente mayor el número de chicas 83.200 que de chicos 72.600. La edad de inicio del consumo de esta droga comienza antes de los 15 años. En cuanto a la población entre 15-64 años, se estima que 237.000 personas empezaron a consumir cannabis en el último año, el mayor inicio de consumo tiene lugar entre los hombres menores de 25 años (OEDA, 2022). En 2020, aproximadamente 591.798 personas de 15 a 64 años tienen un consumo problemático de cannabis (puntuación ≥4 puntos en la escala CAST), lo que se corresponde con el 1,9% de toda la población de 15 a 64 años, siendo mayor el porcentaje entre los hombres (3%) que entre las mujeres (0,9%) y entre los menores de 34 años (3,4%) que entre los mayores de esta edad (1,2%). (OEDA, 2022).El alto consumo de esta droga se refleja en las admisiones a tratamiento, en 2019, 14.202 personas iniciaron tratamiento por abuso o dependencia a cannabis, de ellas 10.372 acudían por primera vez. El consumo de cannabis es el segundo motivo de tratamiento en población general por consumo de drogas ilegales, detrás de la cocaína, pero el primero entre los menores de edad (95,2% de todos los menores de 18 años admitidos a tratamiento).¿Por qué hemos llegado a este punto? Muchas de las claves las encontrarás en este libro, pero es evidente que sin los movimientos prolegalización liderados y subvencionados por la industria del cannabis no se hubiese llegado a esta situación. En la última década la industria ha utilizado como “chivo expiatorio” a los movimientos procannabis y han usado el potencial terapéutico como “caballo de Troya” para inocular en la población (y en los políticos principalmente) la idea de que es una sustancia que “cura enfermedades”, desde la esclerosis múltiple, el cáncer, el glaucoma, epilepsia, los trastornos de conducta alimentaria, etc. Este mensaje a pesar de ser falso, a base de repetirlo muchas veces ha ido calando en una parte importante de la sociedad, principalmente en los más jóvenes que han visto como, una vez descubierto lo perjudicial que es el tabaco, han encontrado en el cannabis un buen sustituto y refugio.Este compendio de 30 capítulos escritos por prestigiosos investigadores y profesionales con amplia experiencia en conductas adictivas permitirá al lector disponer de la más actualizada evidencia científica sobre el consumo de cannabis.

La nación decimonónica, con sus narrativas y relatos, no ha sufrido una crítica ontológica, y aún permea en nuestras escuelas del siglo XXI. Ante dicho escenario, los jóvenes deben emprender una formación ciudadana en un mundo cambiante y complejo, donde la Historia no parece estar siendo efectiva conforme a dichos cambios y complejidades. La utopía planteada por la Historia en el siglo XIX contradictoriamente ya no plantea futuros alternativos en las aulas escolares del presente. En este libro abordamos el tridente Historia, Educación y Formación Ciudadana, ya que entendemos que son cuestiones íntimamente relacionadas. ¿Cómo pensar una educación y una ciudadanía sin una Historia para pensar en libertad y ser críticos? Cuando el poder público interviene en el ámbito de los derechos fundamentales en ocasiones lo hace con la finalidad de promover un bien colectivo a costa del titular del derecho afectado, sin que haya mediado ninguna actuación ilícita por parte de este. Este tipo de restricción (llamada sacrificial) de los derechos fundamentales ha ganado visibilidad en el debate público al hilo de polémicas recientes, como la posible vacunación forzosa de la población (con la finalidad de combatir una epidemia) o la indemnización de la prisión provisional seguida de absolución. No obstante, el problema del sacrificio de derechos ha sido, desde la Edad Media, una preocupación permanente de la filosofía política y del pensamiento europeo de corte constitucional, donde ha encontrado respuestas muy diversas que pueden proyectarse sobre los debates actuales. En el marco jurídico vigente, la restricción de tipo sacrificial exige la realización de dos juicios, uno ponderativo y otro adjudicativo, que sirven para conciliar armónicamente las cláusulas constitucionales de Estado de Derecho y Estado social. Las categorías dogmáticas que conforman la teoría general de las restricciones de los derechos fundamentales deben ser revisadas para que estos dos juicios (característicos de las restricciones sacrificiales) encuentren el lugar apropiado, sin caer en la hipertrofia de uno (proporcionalidad) y el desconocimiento del otro (indemnización).

The Alboran Sea represents a regional Mediterranean space where North and South worlds merges, creating a geopolitical region where marine resources and maritime activities should be managed from a national and international perspectives. It is widely known, that currently the planet is suffering a global change, and it is also affecting the Alboran Sea, its ecosystems and populations. An important first step to update a paramount vision on this region is to understand the climatic, geologic and oceanographic, including biochemical cycles, process which shapes the rich geodiversity, biodiversity, the productivity, and the sustainable use of the marine resources from Alboran Sea. The fisheries management system should take into account marine environmental variability to achieve biological sustainability of marine resources. Well-funded policy-makers'decisions require a sound science based knowledge of the interaction between the marine environment and commercial stocks. This is because the role of marine environment in the evolution of fish stocks is sometimes even more important than the one played by fishers in the commercial exploitation of them. Finally, we should analyze the different aspects of political context that could affect the management of the resources from Alboran Sea in the context of climate change. This book reviews different aspects of the Alboran Sea to help understand the current situation from the original Tethis Ocean. No es tracta d'igualar dues repressions, pero sí que cal pensar que per tot arreu hi va haver viudos, viudes, orfes, robatoris, saquejos, confiscacions, assassinats, extorsions, terror calent, terror fred, actuacions incontrolades... i quan s'empren aquests termes cal tenir present que, en un moment determinat, es poden aplicar a qualsevol dels dos costats de la línia divisoria. Una altra cosa és el tracte que va donar el franquisme a unes víctimes i a altres. Ací sí que hi ha una barrera que és necessari eliminar si volem facilitar un clima de concòrdia.

From the physician's perspective, care of geriatric hip fracture patients requires a multidisciplinary team, which is led by the surgeon and which includes internists and other subspecialists within internal medicine, anesthesiologists, nurses, operating room technicians, social workers, physical therapists, and rehabilitation center coordinators and staff. Nowhere in the orthopedic literature is there a text that guides care for these complex patients from injury through recovery. This text is the first to do so by organizing and synthesizing a large body of literature. Noninvasive mechanical ventilation has managed to establish itself as the treatment option for a wide variety of causes of acute and chronic respiratory failure in different settings in hospital and home noninvasive mechanical ventilation. In the last decades, we have discovered its positive effects on gas exchange and symptoms such as dyspnea control, widely contrasted against endotracheal intubation. The proposed book aims to understand the mechanism of survival of microorganisms in response to chemical stress in various ecological niches that suffer direct human intervention, more so the agricultural, domestic and hospital settings. Microbicides (e.g. disinfectants, antiseptics, fungicides, algaecides, insecticides and pesticides) are used rampantly to control undesirable microbes. Insecticides and pesticides are routinely used in agriculture which directly affect the microbial population in farms, orchards and fields. Health care environments are always stressed with disinfectants and antibiotics. It is always probable that microbicide-stressed microorganisms are in a dynamic state, displaced from one niche to the other. Some soil and water borne bacteria or their resistance determinants are also getting prominence in hospital settings after suffering selective pressure from agricides. In order to reveal the survival strategies of microbicidal-resistant microbes, it isof prime importance to know the mode of action of these complete range of microbicides (agricides to antibiotics). The present book intends to address these issues. There will be several chapters dealing with tolerance and cross resistance in microbes and bacteria in particular, dwelling in various niches. Till date, there is no consensus among scientists in theorizing molecular mechanisms to explain bacterial tolerance and their cross resistance to agricides and antibiotics.

During Mexico's silent (1896-1930) and early sound (1931-52) periods, cinema saw the development of five significant genres: the prostitute melodrama (including the cabaretera subgenre), the indigenista film (on indigenous themes or topics), the cine de añoranza porfiriana (films of Porfirian nostalgia), the Revolution film, and the comedia ranchera (ranch comedy). In this book, author Jacqueline Avila looks at examples from all genres, exploring the ways that the popular, regional, and orchestral music in these films contributed to the creation of tropes and archetypes now central to Mexican cultural nationalism. Integrating primary source material--including newspaper articles, advertisements, films--with film music studies, sound studies, and Mexican film and cultural history, Avila examines how these tropes and archetypes mirrored changing perceptions of mexicanidad manufactured by the State and popular and transnational culture. As she shows, several social and political agencies were heavily invested in creating a unified national identity in an attempt to merge the previously fragmented populace as a result of the Revolution. The commercial medium of film became an important tool to acquaint a diverse urban audience with the nuances of Mexican national identity, and music played an essential and persuasive role in the process. In this heterogeneous environment, cinema and its music continuously reshaped the contested, fluctuating space of Mexican identity, functioning both as a sign and symptom of social and political change.
