The Tigris and Euphrates rivers run through the heart of the Middle East and merge in the area of Mesopotamia known as the'cradle of civilization.'In their long and volatile political history, the sixteenth century ushered in a rare era of stability and integration. A series of military campaigns between the Mediterranean Sea and the Persian Gulf brought the entirety of their flow under the institutional control of the Ottoman Empire, then at the peak of its power and wealth. Rivers of the Sultan tells the history of the Tigris and Euphrates during the early modern period. Under the leadership of Sultan Süleyman I, the rivers became Ottoman from mountain to ocean, managed by a political elite that pledged allegiance to a single household, professed a common religion, spoke a lingua franca, and received orders from a central administration based in Istanbul. Faisal Husain details how Ottoman unification institutionalized cooperation among the rivers'dominant users and improved the exploitation of their waters for navigation and food production. Istanbul harnessed the energy and resources of the rivers for its security and economic needs through a complex network of forts, canals, bridges, and shipyards. Above all, the imperial approach to river management rebalanced the natural resource disparity within the Tigris-Euphrates basin. Istanbul regularly organized shipments of grain, metal, and timber from upstream areas of surplus in Anatolia to downstream areas of need in Iraq. Through this policy of natural resource redistribution, the Ottoman Empire strengthened its presence in the eastern borderland region with the Safavid Empire and fended off challenges to its authority. Placing these world historic bodies of water at its center, Rivers of the Sultan reveals intimate bonds between state and society, metropole and periphery, and nature and culture in the early modern world.

The Treaties of Carlowitz (1699) includes recent studies on the Lega Sacra War of 1683-1699 against the Ottoman Empire, the Peace treaties of Carlowitz (1699), and on the general impact of the conflict upon Modern Europe and the Balkans. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on Simulation and Synthesis in Medical Imaging, SASHIMI 2020, held in conjunction with MICCAI 2020, in Lima, Peru, in October 2020. Virtual Reality ist der Megatrend, und mittlerweile wird aus dem Hype Ernst: 2016 sind die ersten für Heimanwender erschwinglichen VR-Brillen auf den Markt gekommen, die jetzt auch diesen kommerziellen Kundenkreis in virtuelle Umgebungen abtauchen lassen. Ungewollter Nebeneffekt dieser Entwicklung ist die VR-Krankheit, die eine ernst zu nehmende Herausforderung für Produzenten wie für Konsumenten darstellt. Auf Herstellerseite könnte sie dem erhofften Durchbruch und vor allem der festen Etablierung von Virtual Reality im Wege stehen und die erwünschten Produktivitätssteigerungen somit beeinträchtigen. Beim Rezipienten kann sich die VR-Krankheit wiederum nicht nur negativ auf das Erlebnis von VR-Inhalten aus-wirken, sondern nach Meinung einiger Studien gar ein potentielles Gesundheits- und Sicherheitsproblem darstellen. Die zentrale Fragestellung besteht darin zu untersuchen, welche technischen Gegenmaßnahmen die Industrie ergreift, um die VR-Krankheit zu unterbinden und auf welche Diagnostik sie sich dabei stützt. In erster Linie gilt es also herauszustellen, was die Industrie nach jetzigem Erkenntnisstand als Ursachen vermutet und welche Entscheidungen sie auf Grundlage dieser Vermutung trifft. Eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit Richtigkeit und Vollständigkeit des diesbezüglichen immer noch im Fluss befindlichen aktuellen Meinungsstandes ist hingegen nicht das zentrale Thema der vorliegenden Arbeit. So greifen einzelne Hersteller im Umgang mit den Beschwerden in der virtuellen Realität neben technischen Anpassungen auch zu didaktischen Maßnahmen, die sowohl Konsumenten als auch Spieleprogrammierer und -designer betreffen. Beispielsweise gibt Oculus für den Konsumenten mittlerweile einen dreistufigen Komfort-Grad als Äquivalent für die Wahrscheinlichkeit des Auftretens der VR-Krankheit an und veröffentlichte für Spieleentwickler einen Leitfaden namens „Oculus Best Practices“ zur bestmöglichen designtechnischen Handhabung der VR-Krankheit. Dabei gilt es zu analysieren, inwiefern sich in den von den Herstellern herausgegebenen Empfehlungen für Spieleentwickler, FAQ und Komforteinstufungen Parallelen zu den bisher ausgemachten Einflussfaktoren, aufgestellten Ursachen-Theorien und Diagnostiken erkennen lassen.

How do people deal with diversity in deprived and mixed urban neighbourhoods? This edited collection provides a comparative international perspective on superdiversity in cities, with explicit attention given to social inequality and social exclusion on a neighbourhood level. Although public discourses on urban diversity are often negative, this book focuses on how residents actively and creatively come and live together through micro-level interactions. By deliberately taking an international perspective on the daily lives of residents, the book uncovers the ways in which national and local contexts shape living in diversity. Leur étude menée par cas, par catégorie d'acteurs et par domaine géographique (révoltes paysannes en Allemagne, insurrections aristocratiques en France...), confine parfois à l'émiettement épistémologique. A contrario, ce livre rapproche les mouvements européens entre eux et avec les domaines coloniaux pour révéler les visions du monde qu'ils véhiculent, en forme de culture de l'insoumission. Les secousses souffertes par l'Espagne, par la couronne de France ou par l'Empire ottoman　ainsi que celles perpétrées par les Tatars, par les Moghols, par les colons américains ou les franciscains du Japon semblent autant d'affaires lointaines qui présentent cependant des caractéristiques comparables. Partout, la place du judiciaire s'accroît jusqu'au point de constituer, diversement, une forme majeure de traitement politique des rébellions.
