The IFIP TC-6 9th International Conference on Personal Wireless Communi- tions, PWC 2004 is the main conference of the IFIP Working Group 6. 8, Mobile and Wireless Communications. The?eld of personal wireless communications is steadily growing in imp- tance,fromanacademic,industrialandsocietalpointofview. Thedroppingcost of WLAN and short-range technologies such as Bluetooth and Zigbee is causing the proliferation of personal devices and appliances equipped with radio int- faces. Together with the gradual deployment of powerful wireless infrastructure networks, such as 3G cellular systems and WLAN hotspots, the conditions are being created for a?ordable ubiquitous communication involving virtually any artifact. This enables new application areas such as ambient intelligence where a world of devices, sensors and actuators surrounding us use wireless technology to create systems that assist us in an unobtrusive way. It also allows the - velopment of personal and personalized environments that accompany a person whereverheorshegoes. ExamplesarePersonalAreaNetworks(PAN)physically surrounding a person, and personal networks with a potentially global reach. PWC 2004 re?ects these developments, which are happening on a global scale. Researchers from all over the world, and in particular a large number from Asia, made contributions to the conference. There were 100 submissions. After a thorough reviewing process, 25 full papers and 13 short papers were retained for presentation in the technical sessions. The papers cover the whole range of wireless and mobile technologies: cellular systems, WLAN, ad hoc and sensor networks, host and network mobility, transport protocols for wireless systems, and the physical layer.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th East European Conference on Advances in Databases and Information Systems, ADBIS 2004, held in Budapest, Hungary, in September 2004. The 27 revised full papers presented together with an invited paper were carefully reviewed and selected from 130 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on constraint databases, deductive databases, heterogenous and Web information systems, cross enterprise information systems, knowledge discovery, database modeling, XML and semistructured databases, physical database design and query evaluation, transaction management and workflow systems, query processing and data streams, spatial databases, and agents and mobile systems.

The message passing paradigm is the most frequently used approach to develop high-performancecomputing applications on paralleland distributed computing architectures. Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) and Message Passing Interface (MPI) are the two main representatives in this domain. This volume comprises 50 selected contributions presented at the 11th - ropean PVM/MPI Users'Group Meeting, which was held in Budapest, H- gary, September 19–22, 2004. The conference was organized by the Laboratory of Parallel and Distributed Systems (LPDS) at the Computer and Automation Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA SZTAKI). The conference was previously held in Venice, Italy (2003), Linz, Austria (2002), Santorini, Greece (2001), Balatonfu ¨red, Hungary (2000), Barcelona, Spain (1999), Liverpool, UK (1998), and Krakow,Poland (1997).The?rst three conferences were devoted to PVM and were held in Munich, Germany (1996), Lyon, France (1995), and Rome, Italy (1994). In its eleventh year, this conference is well established as the forum for users and developers of PVM, MPI, and other messagepassing environments.Inter- tionsbetweenthesegroupshaveprovedtobeveryusefulfordevelopingnewideas in parallel computing, and for applying some of those already existent to new practical?elds.Themaintopicsofthe meeting wereevaluationandperformance of PVM and MPI, extensions, implementations and improvements of PVM and MPI, parallel algorithms using the message passing paradigm, and parallel - plications in science and engineering. In addition, the topics of the conference were extended to include cluster and grid computing, in order to re?ect the importance of this area for the high-performance computing community.

Arti?cial Immune Systems have come of age. They are no longer an obscure computersciencetechnique,workedonbyacoupleoffarsightedresearchgroups. Today, researchers across the globe are working on new computer algorithms inspired by the workings of the immune system. This vigorous?eld of research investigates how immunobiology can assist our technology, and along the way is beginning to help biologists understand their unique problems. AIS is now old enough to understand its roots, its context in the research community, and its exciting future. It has grown too big to be con?ned to s- cial sessions in evolutionary computation conferences. AIS researchers are now forming their own community and identity. The International Conference on Arti?cial Immune Systems is proud to be the premiere conference in the area. As its organizers, we were honored to have such a variety of innovative and original scienti?c papers presented this year. ICARIS 2004 was the third international conference dedicated entirely to the?eld of Arti?cial Immune Systems (AIS). It was held in Catania, on the beautiful island of Sicily, Italy, during September 13–16, 2004. While hosting the conference, the city of Catania gave the participants the opportunity to enjoy the richness of its historical and cultural atmosphere and the beauty of its natural resources, the sea, and the Etna volcano.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Distributed Computing, DISC 2004, held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in October 2004. The 31 revised full papers presented together with an extended abstract of an invited lecture and an eulogy for Peter Ruzicka were carefully reviewed and selected from 142 submissions. The 30 revised full papers presented together with summaries on the workshops and tutorials were carefully reviewed and selected from 135 technical paper submissions. The 11 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 21 submissions. The 28 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The papers address all current issues in cooperative design, visualization, and engineering, ranging from theoretical and methodological topics to various systems and frameworks to applications in a variety of fields.

ICIAR 2004, the International Conference on Image Analysis and Recognition, was the?rst ICIAR conference, and was held in Porto, Portugal. ICIAR will be organized annually, and will alternate between Europe and North America. ICIAR 2005 will take place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The idea of o?ering these conferences came as a result of discussion between researchers in Portugal and Canada to encourage collaboration and exchange, mainly between these two countries, but also with the open participation of other countries, addressing recent advances in theory, methodology and applications. The response to the call for papers for ICIAR 2004 was very positive. From 316 full papers submitted, 210 were accepted (97 oral presentations, and 113 - sters). The review process was carried out by the Program Committee members and other reviewers; all are experts in various image analysis and recognition areas. Each paper was reviewed by at least two reviewing parties. The high q- lity of the papers in these proceedings is attributed?rst to the authors, and second to the quality of the reviews provided by the experts. Since the start of the International Workshop on Web Caching and Content Distribution (WCW) in 1996, it has served as the premiere meeting for researchers and practitioners to exchange results and visions on all aspects of content caching, distribution, and delivery. Building on the success of the previous WCW meetings, WCW 2004 extended its scope and covered interesting research and deployment areas relating to content services as they move through the Internet. This year, WCW was held in Beijing, China. Although it was the first time that WCW was held in Asia, we received more than 50 high quality papers from five continents. Fifteen papers were accepted as regular papers and 6 papers as synopses to appear in the proceedings. The topics covered included architectural issues, routing and placement, caching in both traditional content delivery networks as well as in peer-- peer systems, systems management and deployment, and performance evaluation. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who submitted papers to WCW 2004 for their valued contribution to the workshop. This event would not have been possible without the broad and personal support and the invaluable suggestions and contributions of the members of the program committee and the steering committee.

The 10th International Conference on the Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming (CP 2003) was held in Toronto, Canada, during September 27 – October 1, 2004. Information about the conference can be found on the Web at http://ai.uwaterloo.ca/~cp2004/ Constraint programming (CP) is about problem modelling, problem solving, programming, optimization, software engineering, databases, visualization, user interfaces, and anything to do with satisfying complex constraints. It reaches into mathematics, operations research, arti?cial intelligence, algorithms, c- plexity, modelling and programming languages, and many aspects of computer science. Moreover, CP is never far from applications, and its successful use in industry and government goes hand in hand with the success of the CP research community. Constraintprogrammingcontinuesto beanexciting,?ourishingandgrowing research?eld,astheannualCPconferenceproceedingsamplywitness.Thisyear, from 158 submissions, we chose 46 to be published in full in the proceedings. Instead of selecting one overall best paper, we picked out four “distinguished” papers – though we were tempted to select at least 12 such papers. In addition we included 16 short papersin the proceedings– these were presentedas posters at CP 2004. This volume includes summaries of the four invited talks of CP 2004. Two speakers from industry were invited. However these were no ordinary industrial representatives,buttwoofthe leadingresearchersinthe CPcommunity:Helmut Simonis of Parc Technologies, until its recent takeover by Cisco Systems; and Jean Francoi ¸ s Puget, Director of Optimization Technology at ILOG. The other two invited speakers are also big movers and shakers in the researchcommunity.

Object Days 2004, held in Erfurt, Germany, in September 2004. The 15 revised full papers presented together with an invited paper were carefully reviewed and selected from inclusion in the book. The papers are organised in topical sections on languages and models, agents and the semantic Web, supporting software processes, software product lines, and case studies and visions.

On behalf of the Organizing and Program Committees of the 3rd European Conference on Universal Multiservice Networks (ECUMN 2004), it is our great pleasure to introduce the proceedings of ECUMN 2004, which was held during October 25–27, 2004, in Porto, Portugal. In response to the Call for Papers, a total of 131 papers were submitted from 29 countries. Each paper was reviewed by several members of the Technical Program Committee or by external peer reviewers. After careful assessment of thereviews,53paperswereacceptedforpresentationin13technicalsessions;half of them originated from countries outside Europe (mainly Asia). This illustrates the strong interest of this conference beyond its original geographical area. The conference program covered a variety of leading-edge research topics which are of current interest, such as wireless networks, mobile ad hoc networks, sensor networks, mobility management, optical networks, quality of service and tra?c, transport protocols, real-time and multimedia, Internet technologies and applications, overlay and virtual private networks, security and privacy, and network operations and management. Together with three plenary sessions from France T´ el´ ecom, Siemens, and Cisco Systems, these technical presentations - dressed the latest research results from the international industry and academia and reported on?ndings on present and future multiservice networks.

This volume contains the proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on AdvancesinInformationSystems(ADVIS)heldinIzmir,Turkey,20–22October, 2004. This was the third conference dedicated to the memory of Prof. Esen Ozkarahan. We are very proud to continue this tradition and keep the memory of this outstanding scientist. The third conference covered many of the topics of the second one: databases and data warehouses, information systems development and management, - formation retrieval, distributed and parallel data processing, and evolutionary algorithms. Besides them some of the hot topics related to information systems were included in the scope of this conference, such as data mining and kno- edge discovery, Web information systems development, information privacy and security, multimedia information systems, and network management. This year we received 203 submissions from which the Program Committee selected 61 papers for presentation at the conference. The success of the conference was dependent upon the hard work of a large number of people. We gratefully acknowledge the contribution of the members of the Program Committee who did their best to review all submitted papers. We also thank all the specialists who helped us in reviewing the papers. We appreciated the constant support and help from the Rector of Dokuz Eylul University, Prof. Dr. Emin Alici. This volume contains the proceedings of the 8th International Workshop on Software and Compilers for Embedded Systems (SCOPES 2004) held in A- terdam, The Netherlands, on September 2 and 3, 2004. Initially, the workshop was referred to as the International Workshop on Code Generation for Emb- ded Systems. The?rst took place in 1994 in Schloß Dagstuhl, Germany. From its beginnings, the intention of the organizers has been to create an interactive atmosphere in which the participants can discuss and pro?t from the assembly of international experts in the?eld. The name SCOPES has been used since the fourth edition in St. Goar, G- many,in1999whenthescopeoftheworkshopwasextendedtoalsocovergeneral issues in embedded software design. Since then SCOPES has been held again in St. Goar in 2001; Berlin, Germany in 2002; Vienna, Austria in 2003; and now in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In response to the call for papers, almost 50 very strong papers were s- mitted from all over the world. All submitted papers were reviewed by at least three experts to ensure the quality of the workshop. In the end, the program committee selected 17 papers for presentation at the workshop. These papers are divided into the following categories: application-speci?c (co)design, system and application synthesis, data?ow analysis, data partitioning, task scheduling and code generation. In addition to the selected contributions, the keynote address was delivered by Mike Uhler from MIPS Technologies. An abstract of his talk is also included in this volume.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th European Symposium on Research in Computer Security, ESORICS 2004, held in Sophia Antipolis, France in September 2004. The 27 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 159 submissions. Among the topics addressed are access control, authorization frameworks, privacy policies, security protocols, trusted computing, anonymity, information hiding, steganography, digital signature schemes, encrypted communication, information flow control, authentication, key distribution, public key cryptography, intrusion prevention, and attack discovery.

On behalf of the program committee, we were pleased to present this year's program for ACSAC: Asia-Paci?c Computer Systems Architecture Conference. Now in its ninth year, ACSAC continues to provide an excellent forum for researchers, educators and practitioners to come to the Asia-Paci?c region to exchange ideas on the latest developments in computer systems architecture. This year, the paper submission and review processes were semiautomated using the free version of CyberChair. We received 152 submissions, the largest number ever.Eachpaperwasassignedatleastthree,mostlyfour,andinafewcaseseven?ve committee members for review. All of the papers were reviewed in a t- monthperiod,duringwhichtheprogramchairsregularlymonitoredtheprogress of the review process. When reviewers claimed inadequate expertise, additional reviewers were solicited. In the end, we received a total of 594 reviews (3.9 per paper) from committee members as well as 248 coreviewers whose names are acknowledged in the proceedings. We would like to thank all of them for their time and e?ort in providing us with such timely and high-quality reviews, some of them on extremely short notice.

Formal methods have been applied successfully to the verification of medium-sized programs in protocol and hardware design. However, their application to more complex systems, resulting from the object-oriented and the more recent component-based software engineering paradigms, requires further development of specification and verification techniques supporting the concepts of reusability and modifiability. This book presents revised tutorial lectures given by invited speakers at the Second International Symposium on Formal Methods for Components and Objects, FMCO 2003, held in Leiden, The Netherlands, in November 2003. The 17 revised lectures by leading researchers present a comprehensive account of the potential of formal methods applied to large and complex software systems such as component-based systems and object systems. The book makes a unique contribution to bridging the gap between theory and practice in software engineering.

This book presents the revised versions of nine invited lectures presented by leading researchers at the fourth edition of the International School on Formal Methods for the Design of Computer, Communication, and Software Systems, SFT 2004, held in Bertinoro, Italy, September 2004. SFM 2004 is devoted to real-time systems. The lectures presented cover formal models and languages for the specification, modeling, analysis, and verification of time-critical systems, the expressiveness of such models and languages, as well as supporting tools and related applications in different domains. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Articulated Motion and Deformable Objects, AMDO 2004, held in Palma de Mallorca, Spain in September 2004. The 25 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. Among the topics addressed are geometric and physical modeling of deformable objects, motion analysis, articulated models and animation, visualization of deformable models, 3D recovery from motion, single or multiple human motion analysis and synthesis, applications of deformable models and motion analysis, face tracking, recovering and recognition models, and virtual and augmented reality systems.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the Second European AcrossGrid Conference, AxGrids 2004, held in Nicosia, Cyprus in January 2004. The 27 revised full papers and 4 revised short papers presented were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement from 57 submissions. The papers address the entire range of current topics in grid computing from computational and data grids to the semantic grid and grid application in various fields.

MobileHCI is a forum for academics and practitioners to discuss the challenges and potential solutions for e?ective human-computer interaction with mobile systems and services. It covers the design, evaluation and application of te- niques and approaches for all mobile computing devices and services. MobileHCI 2004 was the sixth in the series of conferences that was started at Glasgow U- versity in 1998 by Chris Johnson. We previously chaired the conference in 1999 in Edinburgh (as part of INTERACT 1999) and in 2001 in Lille (as part of IHM-HCI 2001). The last two years saw the conference move to Italy,?rst - der the chairmanship of Fabio Patern` o in Pisa then under Luca Chittaro in Udine. In 2005 the conference will move to Austria to be chaired by Manfred Tscheligi. Each year the conference has its own website hosted by the conference chair, however the address www. mobilehci. org will always point to the next (or current) conference. The number of submissions has increased every year. This year we received 79 full papers (63 were received last year) from which we accepted the best 25. We had 81 short papers and posters submitted (59 last year) and accepted 20 of these as short papers and 22 as posters. We received 9 workshop, 4 tutorial and 2 panel proposals, from which 5, 2 and 2, respectively, were accepted.

This proceedings contains the papers presented at the 2004 IFIP International Conference on Network and Parallel Computing (NPC 2004), held at Wuhan, China, from October 18 to 20, 2004. The goal of the conference was to establish an international forum for engineers and scientists to present their ideas and experiences in network and parallel computing. A total of 338 submissions were received in response to the call for papers. These papers werefrom Australia, Brazil,Canada,China, Finland, France, G- many, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxemburg, Malaysia, N- way, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, UK, and USA. Each submission was sent to at least three reviewers.Each paper was judged according to its originality,inno- tion, readability, and relevance to the expected audience. Based on the reviews received, a total of 69 papers were accepted to be included in the proceedings. Among the 69 papers, 46 were accepted as full papers and were presented at the conference.Wealso accepted23papersasshortpapers;eachofthesepaperswas given an opportunity to have a brief presentation at the conference, followed by discussions in a poster session. Thus, due to the limited scope and time of the conference and the high number of submissions received, only 20% of the total submissions were included in the?nal program.

Middleware systems compriseprogrammingmodels, abstractions,protocols,and services to facilitate the design, the development, the integration, and the - ployment of distributed applications in heterogeneous computing environments. Conceptually, the term “middleware” refers to a layer of software above the networking substrate and the operating system and below the (distributed) application. In practice these boundaries are not clear cut, with middleware functionality moving into and out of these layers. Remote communication, p- lish/subscribe, messaging, and (distributed) transaction constitute examples of common middleware abstractions and services. Middleware researchencompasses, builds on and extends a wide spectrum of concepts, techniques and ideas from a broad range of?elds, including progr- ming languages, distributed systems, operating systems, networking, and data management. Following the success of the past conferences in this series in the Lake D- trict, UK (1998), in Palisades, NY (2000), in Heidelberg, Germany (2001), and in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2003), the 5th International Middleware Conference in Toronto, Canada aimed to be the premier conference for middleware research and technology in 2004. The broad scope of the conference included the design, the implementation, the deployment, and the evaluation of distributed systems platforms and architectures for emerging computing environments. The conf- ence gave an overview of research on middleware for peer-to-peer computing, middleware for mobility, middleware for replication and transactions, on p- lish/subscribesystems,onroutingprotocolsandoverlaynetworks,onapplication servers, resource management, and software engineering, and on Web services. This year, the technical program of Middleware drewfrom 194 submitted papers, among which 13 were explicitly submitted as work-in-progress papers.

The 47 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 148 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on digital library architectures, evaluation and usability, user interfaces and presentation, new approaches to information retrieval, interoperability, enhanced indexing and search methods, personalization and applications, music digital libraries, personal digital libraries, innovative technologies, open archive initiative, new models and tools, and user-centered design.

The 7th International Conference on Medical Imaging and Computer Assisted Intervention, MICCAI 2004, was held in Saint-Malo, Brittany, France at the “Palais du Grand Large” conference center, September 26–29, 2004. The p- posaltohostMICCAI2004wasstronglyencouragedandsupportedbyIRISA, Rennes. IRISA is a publicly funded national research laboratory with a sta? of 370,including150full-timeresearchscientistsorteachingresearchscientistsand 115 postgraduate students. INRIA, the CNRS, and the University of Rennes 1 are all partners in this mixed research unit, and all three organizations were helpful in supporting MICCAI. MICCAI has become a premier international conference with in-depth - pers on the multidisciplinary?elds of medical image computing, comput- assisted intervention and medical robotics. The conference brings together cl- icians, biological scientists, computer scientists, engineers, physicists and other researchers and o?ers them a forum to exchange ideas in these exciting and rapidly growing?elds. The impact of MICCAI increases each year and the quality and quantity of submitted papers this year was very impressive. We received a record 516 full submissions (8 pages in length) and 101 short communications (2 pages) from 36 di?erent countries and 5 continents (see?gures below). All submissions were reviewed by up to 4 external reviewers from the Scienti?c Review C- mittee and a primary reviewer from the Program Committee. All reviews were then considered by the MICCAI 2004 Program Committee, resulting in the acceptance of 235 full papers and 33 short communications.

Theimportanceofsafetyandsecurityisgrowingsteadily.Safetyisaqualityc- racteristic that traditionally has been considered to be important in embedded systems, and security is usually an essential property in business applications. There is certainly a tendency to use software-based solutions in safety-critical applications domains, which increases the importance of safety engineering te- niques. These include modelling and analysis techniques as well as appropriate processes and tools. And it is surely correct that the amount of con?dential data that require protection from unauthorized access is growing. Therefore, security is very important. On the one hand, the traditional motivations for addressing safety and security still exist, and their relevance has improved. On the other hand, safety and security requirements occur increasingly in the same system. At present, many software-based systems interact with technical equipment and they communicate, e.g., with users and other systems. Future systems will more and more interact with many other entities (technical systems, people, the en- ronment). In this situation, security problems may cause safety-related failures. It is thus necessary to address safety and security. It is furthermore required to take into account the interactions between these two properties.

This book constitutes the documentation of the scientific outcome of the priority program Integration of Software Specification Techniques for Applications in Engineering sponsored by the German Research Foundation (DFG). It includes main contributions of the projects of the priority program and of additional international experts in the field. Some of the papers included were presented at the related Third International Workshop on the topic, INT 2004, held in Barcelona, Spain in March 2004. The 25 revised full papers presented together with 6 section introductions by the volume editors were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The papers are organized in topical sections on reference case study production automation, reference case study traffic control systems, petri nets and related approaches in engineering, charts, verification, and integration modeling.

The evolution of the Internet has led us to the new era of the information infrastructure. As the information systems operating on the Internet are getting larger and more complicated, it is clear that the traditional approaches based on centralized mechanisms are no longer meaningful. One typical example can be found in the recent growing interest in a P2P (peer-to-peer) computing paradigm. It is quite different from the Web-based client-server systems, which adopt essentially centralized management mechanisms. The P2P computing environment has the potential to overcome bottlenecks in Web computing paradigm, but it introduces another difficulty, a scalability problem in terms of information found, if we use a brute-force flooding mechanism. As such, conventional information systems have been designed in a centralized fashion. As the Internet is deployed on a world scale, however, the information systems have been growing, and it becomes more and more difficult to ensure fau- free operation. This has long been a fundamental research topic in the field. A complex information system is becoming more than we can manage. For these reasons, there has recently been a significant increase in interest in biologically inspired approaches to designing future information systems that can be managed efficiently and correctly.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Workshop on Parameterized and Exact Computation, IWPEC 2004, held in Bergen, Norway, in September 2004. As software systems become ubiquitous, the issues of dependability become more and more critical. Given that solutions to these issues must be taken into account from the very beginning of the design process, it is appropriate that dependability is addressed at the architectural level. This book results from an effort to bring together the research communities of software architectures and dependability. Inspired by the ICSE 2003 Workshop on Software Architectures for Dependable Systems, the book focuses on topics relevant to improving the state of the art in architecting dependable systems. The 15 thoroughly reviewed papers originate partly from the workshop; others were solicited in order to achieve complete coverage of all relevant aspects. The papers are organized into topical sections on architectures for dependability, fault-tolerance in software architectures, dependability analysis in software architectures, and industrial experience.

ECOOP is the premier forum in Europe for bringing together practitioners, - searchers, and students to share their ideas and experiences in a broad range of disciplines woven with the common thread of object technology. It is a collage of events, including outstanding invited speakers, carefully refereed technical - pers, practitioner reports re?ecting real-world experience, panels, topic-focused workshops, demonstrations, and an interactive posters session. The 18th ECOOP 2004 conference held during June 14–18, 2004 in Oslo, Norway represented another year of continued success in object-oriented p- gramming, both as a topic of academic study and as a vehicle for industrial software development. Object-oriented technology has come of age; it is now the commonly established method for most software projects. However, an - panding?eld of applications and new technological challenges provide a strong demand for research in foundations, design and programming methods, as well as implementation techniques. There is also an increasing interest in the in- gration of object-orientation with other software development techniques. We anticipate therefore that object-oriented programming will be a fruitful subject of research for many years to come. The Next Generation Information Technologies and Systems (NGITS) wo- shop series is a biannual event held in Israel since 1993. Like its predecessors, NGITS'99 brings together active members of the international research com- nity interested in information technology and knowledge based systems. Many of the base technologies in the traditional areas of database management systems, information retrieval, and resource optimization, are being deployed nowadays in novel systems and applications that?ourish with the astonishing increase in computational power, storage capacity, communication, and - of course - the advent of the world-wide web. These new fronts, in turn, present an ever gr- ing set of challenges to the technologies, such as data availability, information integrity, and knowledge extraction, fuelling an exciting set of activities. Our workshop clearly re?ects this trend, o?ering a rich sample of the state of the art at the close of the millennium and a glimpse of what is to come in the next one. In response to the call for papers, we received 34 high quality submissions, 22 of which were carefully selected by the Program Committee for presentation at the workshop and inclusion in these proceedings. These include 17 full length papers as well as 5 short papers (that will be accompanied by demonstrations during the workshop). In addition, it is our pleasure to feature two invited talks, given by Professor J. Ullman of Stanford University and IBM Fellow C. Mohan.

The Second International Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery (DaWaK 2000) was held in Greenwich, UK 4–6 September. DaWaK 2000 was a forum where researchers from data warehousing and knowledge discovery disciplines could exchange ideas on improving next generation decision support and data mining systems. The conference focused on the logical and physical design of data warehousing and knowledge discovery systems. The scope of the papers covered the most recent and relevant topics in the areas of data warehousing, multidimensional databases, OLAP, knowledge discovery and mining complex databases. These proceedings contain the technical papers selected for presentation at the conference. We received more than 90 papers from over 20 countries and the program committee finally selected 31 long papers and 11 short papers. The conference program included three invited talks, namely, “A Foolish Consistency: Technical Challenges in Consistency Management” by Professor Anthony Finkelstein, University College London, UK; “European Plan for Research in Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery” by Dr. Harald Sonnberger (Head of Unit A4, Eurostat, European Commission); and “Security in Data Warehousing” by Professor Bharat Bhargava, Purdue University, USA.
