During the reign of Charles III (1759-1788), Spain pushed for economic and cultural modernization, but encountered resistance from members of the public and the elite alike. They viewed the modern as a passing fad that would, in time, show its fragility, and believed Spain would withstand the collapse thanks to its firm grounding in the pillars of monarchy, religion, and traditional forms of knowledge. One source of this solid foundation was the long-established musical knowledge based on the rules of counterpoint. In contrast, modernizers argued that Spain could be true to its essence, yet simultaneously modern and cosmopolitan: they favoured cosmopolitan genres, such as Italian opera, and artistic expression over counterpoint rules. At times this led to more creative uses of music, such as reinterpreting pastoral and sentimental topics to accommodate reformist political trends.Music was considered crucial to the integrity of the Spanish nation by both sides. Whether and how Spain became modern would in many ways be defined and reinforced by the kinds of music that Spaniards composed and witnessed on stage. The remarkable story of a hidden New Deal program that tried to change America and end the Great Depression using folk music, laying the groundwork for the folk revival and having a lasting impact on American culture.In 1934, the Great Depression had destroyed the US economy, leaving residents poverty-stricken. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt urged President Roosevelt to take radical action to help those hit hardest—Appalachian miners and mill workers stranded after factories closed, city dwellers with no hope of getting work, farmers whose land had failed. They set up government homesteads in rural areas across the country, an experiment in cooperative living where people could start over. To boost morale and encourage the homesteaders to find community in their own traditions, the administration brought in artists to lead group activities—including folk music. As part of a music unit led by Charles Seeger (father of Pete), staffer Sidney Robertson traveled the country to record hundreds of folk songs. Music leaders, most notably Margaret Valiant, were sent to homesteads to use the collected songs to foster community and cooperation. Working almost entirely (and purposely) under the radar, the music unit would collect more than 800 songs and operate for nearly two years, until they were shut down under fire from a conservative coalition in Congress that deemed the entire homestead enterprise dangerously “socialistic.'Despite its early demise, the music unit proved that music can provide hope and a sense of belonging even in the darkest times. Por eso, hasta los antimodernos, siguiendo a Antoine Compagnon, son necesariamente modernos en este otro sentido (Compagnon, 2007).Somos hijos de los cambios que viene experimentando el mundo en que vivimos. La mera enumeración de los hechos sucedidos desde los noventa sobrecoge hasta facultar para hablar de un cambio de época. No es una nueva banalización de esta idea. Esos cambios y la reacción a los mismos están alterando las formas de aprender y de enseñar desde hace tiempo. Afectan a disciplinas que pueden parecer distantes, como las que aquí abordamos, pero que se ven impelidas por desafíos comunes. Nos afectan a unos y a otros los nuevos enfoques epistemológicos, las tecnologías y sus efectos sociales y el desarrollo de nuevas metodologías. This monograph presents a detailed analysis of the beginning and rapid establishment of blood group research in the first half of the twentieth century. The main theme of this book is how blood groups were used as a scientific explanation of differences in race, health, and human behaviour. The discovery of the inheritance of blood groups, and their uneven distribution among various human populations quickly developed into a new field of scientific study in various countries around the world. Almost as quickly, the discoveries were studied as genetic markers of race, disease, and behaviours such as crime, insanity, and temperament. The time scope of coverage is the first half of the twentieth century, beginning with Landsteiner's discovery of blood groups and ending with the period following the Second World War when the research was picked up again and became part of the revolution in human genetics accelerated by the discovery of the double helix. By this time, blood group genetics had undermined the very concept of race and became the foundation of population genetics. The focus on the formative period of blood group research complements the recent resurgence of interest in the subject by providing in- depth background and a base for further research.

The present work investigates professional self-concept domains of pre-service teachers of the teaching degree programs'Teaching at Elementary Schools'and'Special Education'in two different studies. This volume investigates the uptake of ‘open learning'in South African Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges and higher education institutions. In response to systemic racism and institutions'implications in histories of colonialism, nationalism, and exclusion, museum curators have embraced new ways of storytelling to face entangled memories and histories. Critical museum practices have consciously sought to unsettle established forms of representation, break with linear narratives of progress, and experiment with new modes of multivocal, multimedia, and subjective storytelling. The volume features analyses of narratives and narration in museums and heritage institutions today, as well as visions for future museum practices on a local, regional, national, transnational, and global scale. It is divided into three sections: Narrative Theory and Temporality, Ruptures and Repair, and Difficult Memories and Histories. Compassionate Leadership for School Improvement and Renewal aims to equip educational leaders with the knowledge, skills, and learning experiences necessary to approach their work from an intentional stance of compassion.
