102. Political Legitimacy and Traditional Values in Putin's Russia
- Author

Helge Blakkisrud, Pål Kolstø, Helge Blakkisrud, and Pål Kolstø
- Abstract
Since Vladimir Putin's return to the Russian presidency in 2012, protection and promotion of so-called ‘traditional values'has played a prominent role in the Kremlin's propaganda campaigns. From the large-scale demonstrations in 2011–2012 to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, conservative social values have been mobilised to justify the Kremlin's policy choices. In the case of the invasion, for example, Putin argued that the allegedly ‘decadent'western world was using Ukraine as a springboard to export its ‘pseudo-values'into Russia. Drawing on a series of case studies spanning elite-level political rhetoric, the work of various ideological ‘values entrepreneurs'such as the Russian Orthodox Church, and, not least, of grassroots sentiments, Political Legitimacy and Traditional Values in Putin's Russia explores authoritarian regime legitimation in today's Russia.

104. Self-Fulfilling Prophecies : Social, Psychological, and Physiological Effects of Expectancies
- Author
-
Russell A. Jones and Russell A. Jones
- Abstract
Originally published in 1977, Self-Fulfilling Prophecies: Social, Psychological, and Physiological Effects of Expectancies integrates a wide variety of research and theory dealing with inter- and intrapersonal expectancies, from which the author develops a new theoretical model. The model explores the relationships between a person's expectation of success and both the objective probability of success and the effort expended in pursuit of the goal. The author also explores in detail the interdependence of one's interpersonal expectancies (as in implicit personality theories, stereotypes, and the labeling approach to deviant behavior), and an individual's personal goals. With the development of the theoretical model, the author critically reviews the literature on performance and goal-seeking behavior at the time. Finally, the influences of expectancies on susceptibility to illness, placebo effects, and psychosomatic disease are discussed. This will be a volume of interest to all concerned with human motivation and goal-seeking behavior and today can be read in its historical context.

105. Psychology and Common Sense
- Author
-
R. B. Joynson and R. B. Joynson
- Abstract
Originally published in 1974, a vigorous debate was in progress among psychologists about the fundamentals of psychology and its future. In particular, the value and reliability of the method of objective experiment in the field of behaviourism was being challenged. The distinguished psychologist R. B. Joynson was at the centre of this controversy, and in this book he argues persuasively that ordinary good sense provides an extensive and often highly reliable understanding of human nature. He maintains that academic psychology gives far too little weight to this factor, and that it raises far-reaching and difficult questions which may require a radical re-appraisal of the aims and methods of psychology. The author notes two objections made by common sense to the conclusions of psychologists: that they frequently lack novelty, and that, alternatively, they seem to bear little relation to human nature as common sense understands it. The method of objective experiment, favoured by behaviourism, is examined, and its severe limitations are surveyed. Finally, the gradual, if frequently covert, return of psychology to the concepts of mental life is traced – a development which inevitably raises once more the perennial, unsolved problems of mind and body, and brings our everyday understanding of human nature back into the centre of the picture.Today it can be read in its historical context.

108. Romantic Relationships and Media : Research at Their Intersections
- Author
-
Valerie Ellen Kretz and Valerie Ellen Kretz
- Subjects
- Man-woman relationships, Interpersonal relations, Mass media--Social aspects, Social media and society
- Abstract
In this book, Valerie Kretz utilizes examples from pop culture and everyday life to provide an examination of current research on romantic relationships and media, with an emphasis on entertainment and digitally-mediated communication. By dividing the book into two major sections – relationship trajectories and different aspects of relationships – Kretz establishes a framework through which to explore relevant theoretical and empirical findings, drawing on established literature, examples in the media, and the lived experiences of interview participants. Kretz covers a wide range of topics through these frameworks, including online dating, representations of love in film and television, social media and romantic jealousy, parasocial romance, and digital breakups, among others. Ultimately, Kretz argues that all available evidence demonstrates the complexity of this intersection, due to the separate roles that several distinct factors like medium, content, social context, frequency of use, and individual differences all play in how these intersections are constructed in the real world. Finally, the book identifies potential directions for future research as scholars continue to unpack this complex relationship.

- Abstract
This Open Access book shows how expert consensus pervades all areas of science. It explores, in particular, the role of consensus in establishing scientific truth, in guiding professional practice and policy and agreeing on what are acceptable scientific methodologies. For some scientific issues, a consensus forms spontaneously among scientists working on a topic, while for others, where the issues are complex, a formal deliberative consensus process is commonly needed. Deliberative consensus processes are becoming more important as scientists increasingly deal with complex multi-disciplinary issues of policy importance such as climate change due to human activity. While deliberative consensus processes are commonly used, they often lead to criticism from consensus skeptics. The book argues that deliberative consensus processes in science can be improved and proposes a number of realistic ways forward, ending with a discussion of whether communicating the scientific consensus on a topic is a good way to persuade the public.

- Abstract
Managing innovative workspace concepts as an organizational change initiative has gained attention among practitioners and researchers. Despite the tremendous potential workspace concepts might bring to organizations, managing workspace changes is a complex undertaking that requires the consideration of various factors. Many workspace change projects fail and encounter resistance from those affected, often because such projects are not sufficiently based on organizational development and change management knowledge and principles. This book addresses this issue by exploring the process of managing workspace changes along four explorative studies. Building upon a systematic literature review and a longitudinal, in-depth case study inside the insurance industry, the conceptual basis, key principles, change activities and sensemaking patterns are identified. These findings are summarized and integrated into a holistic and scientifically developed process model that shows how workspace changes can be dynamically managed to facilitate organizational change. In doing so, theoretical contributions are derived and valuable recommendations for practitioners in facility management, human resources and change management provided.

- Abstract
The Sixth Edition of Charney and Nestler's Neurobiology of Mental Illness builds on previous editions of the book and reflects the continuing progress in reintegrating psychiatry into the mainstream of modern biomedical science. This reintegration remains a work in progress, based on the unique complexity of the brain and its diseases. Yet, the research tools that are transforming other branches of medicine-epidemiology, genetics, epigenetics, molecular and cell biology, imaging, and medicinal chemistry, along with fundamental advances in the neurosciences that make it possible to decipher cell types and their larger circuits to an unprecedented degree, are now at long last transforming psychiatry. Collectively, the 75 chapters in this newly renovated textbook describe the developments in genetics and in molecular, cellular, and systems neuroscience that are breaking new ground in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disabling psychiatric disorders. In this updated edition, Section 1 focuses on the major methodological approaches to studying the biological basis of mental illness. Sections 2 through 8 each focus on a major class of mental illness, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety and trauma disorders, substance use disorders, neurodegenerative disorders, and childhood psychiatry disorders. The final section is a collection of essays that address what can be expected over the next decade in terms of improving psychiatric diagnosis, achieving a true precision approach to treating mental illness, along with new avenues of medication and non-medication therapies in the offing.

Are Vegard Haug and Are Vegard Haug
- Abstract
This topical book presents a bottom-up perspective on the crisis management, policies, organisation and functioning of democracy across five Nordic countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on a four-year comparative study of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, it considers the divergent local and regional management strategies employed as the crisis unfolded.Chapters consider how the pandemic jeopardised the Nordic countries'high levels of decentralisation and citizen trust in government institutions, and the devolution of functions to local government. They explore the severe and restrictive measures employed to control the spread of the virus, and whether these evolving regimes respected civil rights and the principles of subsidiarity and proportionality. Brought together under the overarching perspective of institutional polycentrism, the book draws on a variety of theoretical strands, including theories of multi-level governance, crisis management, and organisational dependency. With empirical data, population and leader surveys and country case-studies, it presents the experiences of Nordic citizens and examines whether their trust in government was sustained or eroded.International in scope, this book is invaluable for students and scholars of regulation and governance, public administration, public health policy, and comparative politics. Its examinations of regulatory and legal frameworks will also prove useful for policy advisors working in public health and crisis management.

- Abstract
This book challenges many suppositions surrounding sex tourism, suggesting that elderly males who seek romance and are caught up in their fantasies of finding love with ‘exotic'black women are taken advantage of, even while the women are often deluding themselves when searching for the mzungu who will enable them to fulfil their dreams of travel, house ownership and comfort. It is a complex story based on research into the lives of the sex workers obtained from a study conducted over 12 months in the bars and nightclubs of the Kenyan coast. Fortunes are made and lost, but the tragedy is that the success of the few in achieving their dreams becomes a false promise for the majority who seek to emulate the success of the few. The book will be of immense value to those interested in gender studies, and indeed those who hold an interest in the complexities of sex work.

- Abstract
This book provides a comprehensive overview and critical evaluation of the emerging and exciting topic of interoception – the perception of the body's internal state. Interest in the topic has been driven by the observation that interoception appears to affect fundamental psychological processes and numerous physical and mental health conditions. In this book, the major authorities in the field present a discussion of the history of interoception, the neural basis of interoception, and the measurement and models of interoception conceptualization. This is followed by a consideration of the many domains that interoception appears to impact (including social and cognitive abilities and mental and physical health conditions) and differences across demographic groups. Interoception: A Comprehensive Guide also explores real world applications, including training for interoception, the modulation of interoception and the impact of such interventions, and future research directions.

- Abstract
This book presents a comprehensive analysis of a remarkable and unexpected outcome of the 2014 referendum on Scottish independence.Despite defeat in the Scottish referendum, the two leading parties in the Yes campaign – the Scottish National Party and Scottish Green Party – experienced an extraordinary surge in membership. The book explains these events, examining the relationship between political parties and social movements, and it assesses the long-term consequences of the surge. Based on surveys of members and interviews with party and movement actors since the referendum, the book analyses the members'involvement in the 2014 referendum, their motives for joining a party, their backgrounds and political attitudes, and their behaviour as party members. A key component of the book is how the surge changed the parties – socio-demographically, ideologically and organisationally. This book will appeal to scholars, students and observers of electoral politics, political participation, social and political movements, and political parties and their members, and more broadly to those interested in the debate on Scottish independence, British politics and comparative politics. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) 4.0 license.

- Abstract
This edited volume explores a variety of aspects of associative governance, providing detailed case studies of associations and associational governance in Scandinavia. Theoretically developing a concept and approach of associative governance, the book sheds light on a dynamic way of perceiving associative aspects of community and commercial life that has been hitherto underexplored and undertheorized. It shows how governance by associations may be conducted not only bottom‑up by self‑organized and voluntary participation, but also top‑down by authoritative incorporation through government, and – not least – in multifarious interstices in between.By exploring a vibrant panoply of dimensions of associative governance, empirically grounded in historical analyses of a wide range of organizational repertoires, the book may provide novel insights into the significant role of associative governance in Scandinavia over the past two centuries. Finally, it provides research‑based knowledge about how to maintain “good political and economic institutions” in the future and a more holistic and dynamic approach to the literature on The Nordic model. The book will be of key interest to scholars and students of Nordic and Scandinavian studies, history, sociology, political science, marketing, social policy, organization theory, and public management. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution‑Non Commercial‑No Derivatives (CC‑BY‑NC‑ND) 4.0 license.

- Abstract
Authored by over 500 internationally acclaimed expert editors and chapter authors from around the world. Completely updated and expanded with almost 40 new chapters. Significantly increased attention to the role of culture in all aspects of evaluation and care. New sections on Digital Mental Health Services and Technologies, Treatment Issues in Specific Populations and Settings, and on Prevention, Systems of Care, and Psychosocial Aspects of Treatment address key advances. This edition is the first comprehensive reference work to cover the entire field of psychiatry in an updateable format, ensuring access to state of the art information. Earlier editions were called “the best current textbook of psychiatry” by the New England Journal of Medicine, and “the gold standard” by the American Journal of Psychiatry. Tasman's Psychiatry, 5th Edition, builds on the initial vision in prior editions of approaching psychiatric evaluation and care from an integrative bio-psycho-social-cultural perspective. It is designed to be an essential and accessible reference for readers at any level of experience. This editorial approach encompasses the importance of the first encounter between patient and clinician, followed by the complex task of beginning to develop a therapeutic relationship and to develop and implement a treatment plan in collaboration with the patient. The importance of increasing attention to the role of culture and social determinants of mental health is reflected both in specific chapters and in components of many chapters throughout the book, especially in those pertaining to clinical evaluation, the therapeutic alliance, and treatment. The global scope of this edition is reflected throughout the book, including the section on psychiatric disorders where evaluation using both ICD 11 and DSM 5-TR is discussed. Most chapters are authored by experts from at least two different countries or continents, adding a critically important dimension which often is missing in major psychiatric textbooks. Tasman's Psychiatry, 5th Edition, is an essential reference for all medical professionals and students who need a trusted reference or learning tool for psychiatry, psychology, clinical research, social work, counseling, therapy, and all others.

Research in Communication Sciences and Disorders: Methods for Systematic Inquiry, Fifth Edition is a comprehensive yet accessible text meant for instructors and students of research methods in the field of communication sciences and disorders. This innovative book reflects the current emphasis on evidence-based practice in speech-language pathology and audiology. The concepts associated with evidence-based practice are integrated throughout the chapters. Rather than treating empirical research and the search for clinical evidence as separate topics, this text presents both as different applications of a process of scientific inquiry. The format of the chapters reflects the steps a researcher or clinician might complete when conducting an investigation. Included are features that guide students and assist with active learning. Each chapter has a set of updated review questions or case scenarios that can be used as homework, probe questions in class, or as a basis for group activities. In addition, the authors provide lists of supplemental readings from the research literature in the field.
