This document is a brief summary of the Institute of Medicine report entitled When Children Die: Improving Palliative and End-of-Life Care for Children. Better care is possible now, but current methods of organizing and financing palliative, end-of-life, and bereavement care complicate the provision and coordination of services to help children and families and sometimes require families to choose between curative or life-prolonging care and palliative services, in particular, hospice care. Inadequate data and scientific knowledge impede efforts to deliver effective care, educate professionals to provide such care, and design supportive public policies. Integrating effective palliative care from the time a child's life-threatening medical problem is diagnosed will improve care for children who survive as well as children who die-and will help the families of all these children. The report recognizes that while much can be done now to support children and families, much more needs to be learned. The analysis and recommendations reflect current knowledge and judgments, but new research and insights will undoubtedly suggest modifications and shifts in emphasis in future years.

A common question posed to PhD students from friends and family is, “What will you do after?” But many students are too focused on the PhD itself and have not yet had a chance to sufficiently think about post-PhD life. Interviewees provide background into their PhD topic and discuss how they transitioned to their current position, including what additional training was necessary and how their PhD training has helped them succeed. In these interviews, two broad non-academic career paths are explored: academic-adjacent careers use research expertise through industry, policy, and publishing; and skill-transfer careers, applying transferable abilities like critical thinking. Over the span of history, not all pregnancies were met with welcome and anticipation. Now that this right has been gutted, the consequences are far-reaching and ever-unfolding. In clinician offices, the issue of abortion might seem remote based upon the population being seen. However, this issue impacts those long past reproductive age and is an important event that most therapists are woefully unprepared to deal with should it come up. With abortion in the news, previous experiences of abortion can come up as memories for clients past their reproductive years or with younger clients, an inability and fear to stop an unwanted pregnancy. As clinicians are human, we come to this issue with our own moral, religious and experiential baggage that might blind us as how to best support our clients.
