This impressive collection celebrates the work of Peter Kershaw, a key figure in the field of Australian palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. Over almost half a century his research helped reconceptualize ecology in Australia, creating a detailed understanding of environmental change in the Late Pleistocene and Holocene. Within a biogeographic framework one of his exceptional contributions was to explore the ways that Aboriginal people may have modified the landscape through the effects of anthropogenic burning. These ideas have had significant impacts on thinking within the fields of geomorphology, biogeography, archaeology, anthropology and history. Papers presented here continue to explore the dynamism of landscape change in Australia and the contribution of humans to those transformations. The volume is structured in two sections. The first examines evidence for human engagement with landscape, focusing on Australia and Papua New Guinea but also dealing with the human/environmental histories of Europe and Asia. The second section contains papers that examine palaeoecology and present some of the latest research into environmental change in Australia and New Zealand. Individually these papers, written by many of Australia’s prominent researchers in these fields, are significant contributions to our knowledge of Quaternary landscapes and human land use. In August of 1991, a second Dartmouth International Workshop on the corpus callosum was convened to share and discuss the progress that had been made over the decade that had passed following the first workshop. A nucleus of basic and clinical scientists came together to discuss their work and the work of others in a field that has been broadened clinically by the addition of many new centers throughout the world that are now performing corpus callosotomy for intractable epilepsy. This text was stimulated by the participants'presentations and associated fertile discussions. It is compiled from the conference and subsequent studies. It reflects, both at the basic and clinical level, an important and expanding field of neural science endeavor. In keeping with the present and rapidly expanding field of outcomes assessment, callosotomy is again evaluated in light of a further decade of surgery and follow-up. Callosotomy continues to be a useful, palliative procedure and the indications for its use have been better established. The basic science section is a supplement to the first edition and elaborates progress in both new data and ideas. The section on experimental epilepsy models adds further support to the clinical rationale for callosotomy. Perhaps of greater importance is the contribution of experimental models to our understanding of the propagation of seizure activity. The section on the neuropsychology of the split brain patient demonstrates the continuing major contributions to the understanding of brain and behavior that pour forth from this cornucopia.

Scientists have speculated as to the nature of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) -'the third circulation'or'vital spirit'for centuries. Just what is this mysterious bathing solution of the central nervous system? Is it a vehicle of transport for an'animal spirit'directing all our activities, as thought by Galen (Singer, 1956) or but a'modified tap water'(Halliburton, 1917)? With the advent of lumbar puncture, cerebrospinal fluid has become a readily available and important means of studying disease affecting the nervous system. In recent years, many sophisticated tools including com­ puter guided gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and high performance liquid chromatography have made it possible to identify and quantify many constituents of this fluid. The CSF has an enormous, though largely'untapped', potential in aiding diagnosis and evaluating treatment of many neurological, psychiatric and systemic disorders. As the ependyma is only a diffusional barrier between the CSF and extracellular fluid of the brain for many compounds, changes in the concentration of these compounds in the CSF may reflect disease processes in the brain.

A differential response to immunotherapy is thus inevitable. 4. Many of the human trials described are not randomized and report survival or response against historical controls. Most tumors described are immunogenic human tumors: renal cell cancer and melanoma are most common. In order to avoid the well-described inter-patient vari­ ation and rare incidence of spontaneous response among patient samples as well as selection bias and changes in practice over time, randomized trials are required. 5. Immunological treatment is unlike conventional chemotherapy in its endpoint. Most chemotherapeutic regimes require a complete response or a good partial response for cure or good palliation. There are now many cases where immunotherapy has provided long-term palliation without massive tumor reduction. Immunity may be stimulated to a degree which holds tumorigenicity in check and most importantly, pro­ vides good palliation for the patient in a manner that differs essentially from chemotherapy.
