Abstract

This book presents the latest results related to one- and two-way models for time series data. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is a classical statistical method for IID data proposed by R.A. Fisher to investigate factors and interactions of phenomena. In contrast, the methods developed in this book apply to time series data. Testing theory of the homogeneity of groups is presented under a wide variety of situations including uncorrelated and correlated groups, fixed and random effects, multi- and high-dimension, parametric and nonparametric spectral densities. These methods have applications in several scientific fields. A test for the existence of interactions is also proposed. The book deals with asymptotics when the number of groups is fixed and sample size diverges. This framework distinguishes the approach of the book from panel data and longitudinal analyses, which mostly deal with cases in which the number of groups is large. The usefulness of the theory in this book is illustratedby numerical simulation and real data analysis. This book is suitable for theoretical statisticians and economists as well as psychologists and data analysts.

This book addresses a range of aging intensity functions, which make it possible to measure and compare aging trends for lifetime random variables. Moreover, they can be used for the characterization of lifetime distributions, also with bounded support. Stochastic orders based on the aging intensities, and their connections with some other orders, are also discussed. To demonstrate the applicability of aging intensity in reliability practice, the book analyzes both real and generated data. The estimated, properly chosen, aging intensity function is mainly recommended to identify data's lifetime distribution, and secondly, to estimate some of the parameters of the identified distribution. Abstract

This second edition of Design of Observational Studies is both an introduction to statistical inference in observational studies and a detailed discussion of the principles that guide the design of observational studies. An observational study is an empiric investigation of effects caused by treatments when randomized experimentation is unethical or infeasible. Observational studies are common in most fields that study the effects of treatments on people, including medicine, economics, epidemiology, education, psychology, political science and sociology. The quality and strength of evidence provided by an observational study is determined largely by its design. Design of Observational Studies is organized into five parts. Chapters 2, 3, and 5 of Part I cover concisely many of the ideas discussed in Rosenbaum's Observational Studies (also published by Springer) but in a less technical fashion. Part II discusses the practical aspects of using propensity scores and other tools to create a matched comparison that balances many covariates, and includes an updated chapter on matching in R. In Part III, the concept of design sensitivity is used to appraise the relative ability of competing designs to distinguish treatment effects from biases due to unmeasured covariates. Part IV is new to this edition; it discusses evidence factors and the computerized construction of more than one comparison group.
