The Federalist Papers are a collection of eighty-five articles and essays written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay in favor of ratifying the United States Constitution. Across the globe, states have long aimed to control the movement of people, identify their citizens, and restrict noncitizens'rights through official identification documents. Paper Bullets, first published in 1946, is an overview of some of the propaganda methods used by the Allied and Axis countries in World War II. This “psychological warfare,” highly effective in many cases, was used to demoralize the enemy, spread falsehoods, influence soldiers to surrender, serve as “safe-conduct” passes, provide a source of reliable news, and warn civilians of impending bombardments. Thousands of lives were likely saved by the use of leaflets, dropped from airplanes or sent over enemy lines via specially designed artillery shells. The book also examines Nazi and Japanese propaganda aimed at U.S. audiences. Included are 50 pages of propaganda examples used during the war by the Americans, Germans, and Japanese. Author Leo Margolin served in the Army's Office of War Information (OWI), Psychological Warfare Branch, established during World War II and responsible for most of the American propaganda efforts during the war.

This book is a useful reference for those interested in the late Georgian Navy and focusses on one of the leading Admirals of its day. Admiral Sir Philip Charles Henderson Calderwood Durham's illustrious thirty-eight-year career included being flag-officer he commanded the Leeward Islands and Portsmouth. He however survived the capsizing of the Royal George in 1882 and he was captain of a ship of the line at Trafalgar, where he had two enemy ships surrender to him. Durham was born in 1763 overlooking the Firth of Forth in Scotland. He entered the Navy in 1777, and soon had a reputation as a daring young master and commander. He was one of the most distinguished and colourful officers of the late Georgian Navy. and was widely considered to be one of its luckiest officers. Durham's record of prize-taking was extremely impressive, and correspondingly lucrative. He saw service in the North American Station and the West Indies. He died in 1845. An earlier biography published a year after his death omitted several important events and this book sets out to rectify this. This collection of his papers consists mainly of letters and despatches relating to his service in the Channel Fleet, the Mediterranean, and the Leeward Islands.

Paul Humphreys pioneered philosophical investigations into the methodological revolution begun by computer simulations. He has also made important contributions to the contemporary literature on emergence by developing the fusion account of diachronic emergence and its generalization, transformational emergence. He is the discoverer of what has come to be called `Humphreys'Paradox'in probability theory and has also made influential contributions to the literature on probabilistic causality and scientific explanation. This collection contains fourteen of his previously published papers on topics ranging from numerical experiments to the status of scientific metaphysics. There is also a previously unpublished paper on social dynamics. The volume is divided into four parts on, respectively, computational science, emergence, probability, and general philosophy of science. The first part contains the seminal 1990 paper on computer simulations, with three other papers arguing that these new methods cannot be accounted for by traditional methodological approaches. The second part contains the original presentation of fusion emergence and three companion papers arguing for diachronic approaches to the topic, rather than the then dominant synchronic accounts. James Russell Lowell was born on February 22nd, 1819. He attended Harvard College at age 15 from 1834, but failed to show any talent or dedication to learning which often caused disruption. After graduating, he attempted many careers including business, the ministry, medicine, and law. The latter gained him admittance to the bar in 1842. Lowell's earliest poems were published in the Southern Literary Messenger in 1840.In December 1844 Lowell married Maria White, shortly after he had published ‘Conversations on the Old Poets', a collection of previously published essays. He co-founded the literary journal The Pioneer, hoping to enjoy a regular income. The magazine ceased after three issues leaving him $1,800 in debt. ‘A Fable for Critics'one of his most popular works, was published in 1848. It sold out quickly. The same year he published ‘The Biglow Papers'. It was cited as the most influential book of 1848. His wife, Maria, who had suffered poor health for years, died on October 27th 1853 of tuberculosis.Lowell was asked to deliver a lecture series. He accepted hoping it might bring him a sense of purpose. The first lecture, on January 9th, 1855, was on John Milton. It was a sell out.He was offered the Smith Professorship of Modern Languages at Harvard. Lowell accepted if he could have a year of study abroad first. It was noted that Lowell had no natural inclination to teach. Lowell agreed, but retained his position for twenty years. In the autumn of 1857, The Atlantic Monthly was established with Lowell as its first editor. In its first November issue he gave the magazine the stamp of high literature and of bold speech on public affairs. With the outbreak of Civil War Lowell used his position to praise Abraham Lincoln. Lowell, generally a pacifist, wrote,'If the destruction of slavery is to be a consequence of the war, shall we regret it? If it be needful to the successful prosecution of the war, shall anyone oppose it?'After Lincoln's assassination, Lowell delivered a poem at Harvard in memory of graduates killed in the war. The poem, ‘Ode Recited at the Harvard Commemoration, July 21, 1865', was the result of a 48-hour writing binge.‘Under the Willows and Other Poems'was released in 1869.Lowell resigned from his Harvard professorship in 1874, though continued to teach through 1877. He spent part of the 1880s delivering speeches. His last published works were mostly collections of essays, and a collection of his poems ‘Heartsease and Rue'in 1888. In the last few months of his life, during 1891, he struggled with gout, sciatica, and chronic nausea; by the summer doctors believed that Lowell had cancer in his kidneys, liver, and lungs, he was administered opium for the pain and was rarely fully conscious.
