- Abstract
This monograph provides a comprehensive study of the Riemann problem for systems of conservation laws arising in continuum physics. It presents the state-of-the-art on the dynamics of compressible fluids and mixtures that undergo phase changes, while remaining accessible to applied mathematicians and engineers interested in shock waves, phase boundary propagation, and nozzle flows. A large selection of nonlinear hyperbolic systems is treated here, including the Saint-Venant, van der Waals, and Baer-Nunziato models. A central theme is the role of the kinetic relation for the selection of under-compressible interfaces in complex fluid flows. This book is recommended to graduate students and researchers who seek new mathematical perspectives on shock waves and phase dynamics.

- Abstract
Dire reports of surging deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon appear often in international headlines, with commentators decrying the destruction of tree-covered habitats as an act of environmental vandalism. Although forest losses are alarming, broader trends are bending in the direction of forest recovery. In this book, Brent Sohngen and Douglas Southgate address the long-term recovery of forests in Latin America. The authors synthesize trends in demography, agricultural development, and technological change, and argue that slower population growth and increasing crop and tree yields—in conjunction with protecting local ownership of natural resources—have encouraged forest transition. This book explores how market forces, ownership arrangements, and the enforcement of property rights have influenced this shift from net deforestation to net afforestation. Forest transitions have happened before, such as the recovery of tree-covered habitats in Europe and the United States. Signs of a similar transformation in land use are now present in Latin America. Ending deforestation requires a strengthening of forest dwellers'property rights while ensuring that biodiversity conservation is no longer treated as a value-less externality. The resulting forest landscape, actively managed for ecosystem services, will be more resilient, as is needed to overcome climate change.

- Abstract
This book is a compilation of carefully chosen chapters that cover the subjects of nanoscale matter, sensing, and labelling applications. It is aimed primarily at scientists and researchers who are already involved in theme-based research or who are just starting their careers. Despite the diverse nature of the topics covered, which include a range of materials in various forms and uses, the emphasis is primarily on sensing and labelling phenomena. The book begins with materials quantification in nanoscale systems by using an innovative technique like “molecular secondary ion mass spectrometry without calibration standards”. Subsequently, the book features an array of materials such as inorganic semiconductor nanoscale particles, carbon dots, rare-earth oxides, polymer nanocomposites, and a few biomaterials, all of which illustrate their functionality and potential for deployment in a wide variety of sensing applications. Although the book delves into the technical aspects of fabrication workouts to some extent, the focus is predominantly on the physical principles, mechanisms, and relevance involved in sensing and labelling applications. The book covers a wide range of topics that leverage the unique properties of nanoscale materials. By carefully selecting appropriate active materials, the authors explore the detection of LPG, hazardous and explosive gases, as well as humidity sensing and hydrogen evolution. It also delves into photo-sensing and persistent photoconductivity by using nanoscale semiconductors, which are used for heavy metal sensing and UV sensing, respectively. The use of metal nanoparticles in various forms is reviewed to address issues related to water contamination, biofilm protection, and food-borne pathogens. The book also discusses surface plasmon resonance, starting with its basic principles and expanding to its relevance in a broader perspective, with a greater focus on applied biosensing. Nanoscale ferrites and magnetic systems are explored with an emphasis on magnetic sensing and actuation. Lastly, the book explores the use of rare-earth-based nanosystems, highlighting persistent luminescence and up/down-converted transitions, which have unprecedented applications in bioimaging and biolabeling. Every effort has been made to strike a balance between the observed phenomena in the emerging areas of sensing applications and suitable theoretical treatments there in.

- Abstract
Therapeutic breathwork has become an important component of many healthcare and psychotherapeutic interventions, as well as being an essential aspect of yoga practices based in ancient wisdom traditions. Despite growing popularity of integrating breathing practices into healthcare and yoga therapeutics, many healthcare providers and yoga professionals lack depth of knowledge about the biomechanics, biochemistry, and psychophysiology of breathing. This dearth of wisdom can result in breathing practices based on prevailing myths and misconceptions about breath and breathing, and often leads to one-size-fits-all approaches to breathwork that can be detrimental for particular clients or contexts. Therapeutic Breathwork: Clinical Science and Practice in Healthcare and Yoga offers a different approach: it translates respiratory science and ancient wisdom into practical guidance for therapeutic breathwork that is individually tailored and person-centered. This book encourages a four-part process of understanding the challenges of the person being served, carefully assessing context and root causes of presented challenges, co-creating clear goals and optimistic motivation, and offering breath, breathing, and breathwork practices that are optimally designed based on this understanding of each breather's context and personhood. The text familiarizes healthcare providers and yoga professionals who use therapeutic breathwork in their clinical practice with the science, psychology, and yoga-based pedagogy of breath and breathing. It discusses modern respiratory science in great depth, inviting learners to apply these principles practically and flexibly to create accessible, tailored, and person-centered therapeutic breathwork practices. Practical considerations are outlined for a variety of breathing practices and discussed to optimize accessibility and tailoring across the diverse patient and student populations represented in healthcare, yoga settings, and other therapeutic contexts. It offers providers clear instructions, person-centered guidelines, suggestions for cuing, sample intervention scripts, and guidance for adapting and tailoring breathwork to the bioindividuality and diversity of clients, patients, and yoga students. Therapeutic Breathwork: Clinical Science and Practice in Healthcare and Yoga advocates for an interactive, reciprocal, and compassionate relationship between provider and client in the therapy or medical office and yoga classroom. It serves as a guide to breathwork and breathing practices for healthcare providers, yoga professionals, and advanced yoga practitioners who want to use breathwork to enhance personal and collective health and resilience, in the contexts of healthcare, self-care, and therapeutic yoga.

44. Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics : An Introduction with Applications

- Abstract
Nonequilibrium statistical mechanics (NESM), practically synonymous with time-dependent statistical mechanics (TDSM), is a beautiful and profound subject, vast in scope, diverse in applications, and indispensable in understanding the changing natural phenomena we encounter in the physical, chemical and biological world. Although time dependent phenomena have been studied from antiquity, the modern subject, the nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, has its genesis in Boltzmann's 1872 classic paper that aimed at extending Maxwell's kinetic theory of gases by including intermolecular interactions. Subsequent development of the subject drew upon the seminal work of Einstein and Langevin on Brownian motion, Rayleigh and Stokes on hydrodynamics, and on the works of Onsager, Prigogine, Kramers, Kubo, Mori, and Zwanzig. One major goal of this book is to develop and present NESM in an organized fashion so that students can appreciate and understand the flow of the subject from postulates to practical uses. This book takes the students on a journey from fundamentals to applications, mostly using simple mathematics, and fundamental concepts. With the advent of computers and computational packages and techniques, a deep intuitive understanding can allow the students to tackle fairly complex problems, like proteins in lipid membranes or solvation of ions in electrolytes used in batteries. The subject is still evolving rapidly, with forays into complex biological events, and materials science.Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics: An Introduction with Applications is, thus, an introductory text that aims to provide students with a background and skill essential to study and understand time-dependent (relaxation) phenomena. It will allow students to calculate transport properties like diffusion and conductivity. The book also teaches the methods to calculate reaction rate on a multi-dimensional energy surface, in another such application. For a beginner in the field, especially for one with an aim to study chemistry and biology, and also physics, one major difficulty faced is a lack of organization of the available study material. Since NESM is a vast subject with many different theoretical tools, the above poses a problem. This book lays the foundations towards understanding time- dependent phenomena in a simple and systematic fashion. It is accessible to students and researchers who have basic training in physics and mathematics. The book can be used to teach advanced undergraduates. Some involved topics, like the projection operator technique and mode coupling theory, are more suitable for Ph.D. level.

- Abstract
This book addresses microwave researchers, engineers, and Master's and Ph.D. students. It follows the idea of the first Edition to educate the readers on fundamental electromagnetics and show how this brilliant theory is used in developing modern multi-physics microwave and terahertz hardware. The first three chapters discuss the main ideas and methods of electromagnetism, explained in a manner that is clear for readers who have had some initial knowledge of electromagnetism. Chapters 4 and 5 are on transmission lines. The first text is on the integrated ones for digital applications, which have been working since DC up to several tens or hundreds of gigahertz. The next chapter is on the waveguides for terahertz frequencies. In this book, the space-modulated signals application, compared to the 1st Edition, is considered using the example of a novel predicate variable logic processor designed and verified in an FPGA environment (Chapter 6). This idea, born initially in microwaves, allowed an eight-logic-style re-configurable on-the-fly processor. Chapters 7–9 discuss microwaves in heating liquids and the initiation of rapid chemical reactions in novel miniature quasi-TEM wave reactors. Chapter 10 involves results on trapping and transporting ultra-cold matter using combined techniques. The new results described here are on numerical simulation of trapping of ultra-cold atoms in random 3D optical potentials using the Anderson effect. In conclusion, the author hopes this book will strengthen the young generation's interest in microwave field theory. He believes that advanced electromagnetism, combined with other physics branches, will play a crucial role in developing new, improved components and systems, and this book is a stepping-stone example in that journey.

- Abstract
This book reviews the recent scientific developments on mining and metallurgical wastes-based alkali-activated materials (MMWAAMs). Enormous quantities of solid wastes are generated during the exploitation of ore deposits and the subsequent processing for materials, causing serious environmental problems. Alkali activation is one of the robust technologies that converts mining and metallurgical wastes into value-added materials and offers technological solutions for efficient stabilization of toxic components in mining and metallurgical wastes. Herein, this book presents the development of the design, processing routes, and performances of mining and metallurgical waste-based alkali-activated materials. It highlights in detail the relationships between the physicochemical characteristics of the source materials and the properties of synthesized binders. From the durability perspective, both the applicability of testing protocols and degradation mechanisms are also reviewed with significant experimental and modeling work presented. Furthermore, the transformation paths of initially toxic components during alkali activation, partitioning characteristics, as well as the assemblages of solubility-controlling mineral phases are discussed for detailed environmental compatibility evaluation. In addition, applications and perspectives for future directions of mining and metallurgical wastes-based alkali-activated materials are illustrated. By bringing state-of-the-art knowledge, this book appeals to a broad readership, particularly researchers engaged in material and environmental science, mining and metallurgical engineering, and other related fields.

- Abstract
This book compiles selected publications authored or co-authored by the editor to present a comprehensive understanding of following topics: (1) density functional theory and CALPHAD modeling; (2) computational tools; and (3) applications of computational thermodynamics. It is noted that while entropy at one scale is well represented by standard statistical mechanics in terms of probability of individual configurations at that scale, the theory capable of counting total entropy of a system from different scales is lacking. The zentropy theory provides a nested form for configurational entropy enabling multiscale modeling to account for disorder and fluctuations from the electronic scale based on quantum mechanics to the experimental scale based on statistical mechanics using free energies of individual configurations rather than their total energies in standard statistical mechanics. The predictions from the zentropy theory demonstrate remarkable agreements with experimental observations for magnetic transitions and associated emergent behaviors of strongly correlated metals and oxides, including singularity and instability at critical points and positive and negative thermal expansions, without the need of additional truncated models and fitting model parameters beyond density function theory. This paves the way to provide the predicted phase equilibrium data for high throughput predictive CALPHAD modeling of complex material systems, and those individual configurations may thus be considered as the genomic building blocks of individual phases in the spirit of Materials Genome®.
