The author reports that, according to a major study of academic misconduct in Canada, cheating, deceit and plagiarism are common on Canadian campuses. The study, performed by Christensen Hughes of the University of Guelph in Ontario and Donald L. McCabe, of Rutgers Business School in New Jersey, is similar to one that found widespread cheating among graduate students in the United States and Canada, particularly among M.B.A. students. A report based on the Canadian study will be published in the November issue of "The Canadian Journal of Higher Education." The surveys also showed that 46% of faculty members and 38% of teaching assistants had ignored suspected cases of academic misconduct citing a lack of proof.
