The San Mateo County Navigation Center (SMCNC) is a factory-assembled modular system that provides supportive interim housing for formerly unhoused individuals in California's Silicon Valley. The center was built quickly in response to the increasing number of homeless people and the limited availability of shelter beds during the Covid-19 pandemic. The modular construction system consists of prefabricated 10-by-40-foot modules that contain different types of housing units, as well as support spaces and food-service facilities. The design of the center creates a well-established campus-like environment, with interstitial green spaces and a central area for residents to gather. The materials used in the construction were chosen for their durability, ease of maintenance, and hominess. The cost of the center was significantly lower than conventional construction, making it an efficient and cost-effective solution. The success of the SMCNC has led to plans for similar modular prototypes in other communities in need. [Extracted from the article]
