The sustainability of the ideal healthcare system thrives on the successful implementation of national health policy. Over 28 years, Nigeria has had three sequential national health policies in 1988, 2004, and 2016 respectively, but fall short of adequately addressing the health issues of national concerns. The scenarios prompted the necessity for this study to assess the trends of the country's health policies, as a framework that directs health services implementation in the nation. A desk review technique was used to explore both published and unpublished materials to form the study narratives. The review revealed that bureaucrats, stakeholders, development partners, civil society organizations, and pressure groups played crucial roles in the processes of converting national health plans to the three policies. Furthermore, the review, discovered that most of the policy trends covered several health challenges and how to address them, but lacks in the proper monitoring and evaluation of their implementation. As such, further national policy formation should include distinct monitoring and evaluation clauses in every implementation stage, to identify and report obstacles for immediate response. The author notes that with all of the effort and resources spent on leadership development in all sectors, there are still too many poor leaders. She believes that "we are often choosing the wrong person to put into leadership roles." In answering what has contributed to why we are ineffective in identifying potential strong leaders, she offers six points, which in her words are (1) Lack of acumen (2) Time (3) Confusion (4) Variation (5) Tools (6) Haven't seen great examples. She discusses three separate research efforts she has conducted in recent years, which in her words were: a qualitative case study of one industry; a qualitative survey‐based global study of nearly 600 leaders, and a deep dive qualitative study with Chief Executive Officers/CEOs from more than 50 companies. She describes in depth The Leadership Blueprint, which is a "simple framework constructed after a meta‐analysis of all the thought leadership over the last 50 years and a deep examination of the practical experience of determining leadership potential in organizations." It focuses on critical thresholds, which in her words are intelligence and personality; learning agility and motivation; and the "actual skills of leadership and functional acumen." Over the past decade, emotional intelligence has been a popular topic of research and debate in the business psychology literature. Emotional intelligence is concerned with an individual's capacity to recognise emotions (their own and those of others) and to understand and regulate emotions across social situations. Interventions designed to develop skills associated with emotional intelligence can be beneficial in understanding and improving areas of job performance; thereby helping individuals to develop confidence and competence to deal with emotionally charged situations. This article presents an overview of academic models of emotional intelligence, followed by discussion of its relevance to GPs. A case study shows how emotional intelligence has been used to develop feedback skills in Home Office employees, and the authors comment on how GPs could develop their emotional intelligence to benefit themselves, their patients and the wider practice team.
