Abstract

The article informs about investigation of high pressure drop observed in air separation units (ASUs) columns. Topics include structured packings have progressively replaced trays, first beginning with the crude argon (CAR) column and low-pressure columns to packings capacity; and calculations that the average temperature of gas in the differential pressure transmitter (PDT) piping located inside the cold box as well as their physical properties were generated using a process simulation tool.

Abstract

The article discusses differences in high pressure drops in air separation units (ASU). Topics covered include analysis of data from high-pressure (HP) columns, predicting the dynamic pressure drop caused by column internals, and the more than four times higher average gas temperature in the differential pressure transmitter (PDT) piping than the gas inside the column. Also noted are differences in measured and predicted pressure drops due to different gas static heads at the two locations.
