In this article, the authors argue that the U.S. military establishment must take a neutral stand on the issue of integrating gays and lesbians in the service. They cite that the question of maintaining gays and lesbians in the military remains to be a divisive issue, and is mostly deliberated on the grounds of morality. They assert that leaders must take great care not to provoke tension and only judge based on performance and not on sexual orientation. The armed forces are called to maintain a pluralistic democracy.
