The article discusses the successful breeding of a new low-coumarin sweet clover, which are well adapted to the alkaline soils and climate of Central Texas. This new sweet clover could be used by the beef producers of Texas. According to Ray Smith, Texas Agricultural Experiment Station legume breeder, these new sweet clovers will not cause bleeding disorders in livestocks and will produce high-quality grazing and hay due to fine stems. Smith began the breeding program with hand and bee-cage crosses between Denta and Emerald sweet clovers. The seedlings were grown for 60 days and tested for coumarin content.
