Abstract

The article discusses the case of a 62-year-old man with small cell carcinoma who wished to die at home. A medical oncologist and a palliative care (PC) specialist were involved in the case. The PC team felt the patient had a small chance of the cancer responding to chemotherapy given his liver failure. The window of opportunity for chemotherapy closed as the patient became moribund, sleeping most of the time and often not arousable. The PC team made arrangements for home hospice care and the patient died within 12 hours of arriving home.
