Although mild symptoms usually respond well to oral antihistamines, there are several other options, including specialist immunotherapy in selected cases. Hay fever is a common condition and ranges in severity from a short-term minor irritation to a debilitating illness lasting several months each year. Pollen exposure can be reduced by wearing wrap-around sunglasses while outside. Mild hay fever symptoms can usually be controlled with oral antihistamines. Topical steroid nasal sprays are a valid first choice if nasal symptoms predominate.
